Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
Jaxpax · 02/02/2005 12:01

I am not drinking alcohol at the moment as feel the pressure not to. I still quite fancy a drop of red, so it is a bit of a challange. I went off acholol completely with ds1 and was hoping the same would happen. Is one glass of red with dinner once a week ok, or is it really a bad thing. I have read that it is a comlete no no in the first 12 weeks.

I am a ex smoker (stopped about 3 years ago) and have grown to dislike being in a smoking environent. Now that I am pg I actually feel like puking if I smell smoke. Anyone else??

PicadillyCircus · 02/02/2005 12:09

I can't stand the smell of smoke at all at the moment. And my sense of smell is so much more acute which means I can smell them a mile off (well not quite that far but feels like it some times )

I read somewhere that people who have no sense of smell don't get "morning" sickness because it's something to do with smelling things that makes pregnant people feel/be sick. Maybe those of us suffering should wear clothes pegs on their noses .

andif · 02/02/2005 12:14

Thanks for all the messages for tomorrow. Am feeling more positive today. Dh can't see what all the fuss is about, as it was only pale pink spotting for a couple of hours, and wonders if we should cancel scan!!! Obviously this caused big strop from me - he's such an optimist and I'm sucha pessimist, guess the truth is somewhere in between! Did pg test and still v positive, so fingers crossed.
As for what I'm drinking, elderflower cordial with plain or fizzy water, peppermint tea and occasional half and half coffee. Friend told me that the chemical process decaf coffee goes through to remove caffeine is actually worse than drinking caffeine!! So I'm just cutting down. Need a bit of caffeine to cope with exhaustion!

DecafArabica · 02/02/2005 12:46

Jaxpax, I think it's outrageous that you can't get one for free in Harlow when in Hackney you can have one if you are over 37. How much do they cost?

Beatie · 02/02/2005 13:08

andif - I hope everything goes well at the scan. It sounds hopeful since the spotting did not last long and was never bright red.

Jaxpax - Hmmm, I can't remember your question... er, what was I going to say? Sorry... I'll come back to you.

Zubb - I am totally off alcohol. I went off it over Christmas which aroused my suspicions that I could be pregnant. Once I am over the nauseas stage (2nd trimester) I hope to be able to partake in the odd glass of wine or beer.

Oh yes - Jaxpax - I have never read anything which suggests one or two glasses of wine a week will be harmful.

YOKEFLEET · 02/02/2005 14:03

Andif- I have my fingers crossed for you.

Re Alchohol - I'm not much help on this as I don't really drink! well weddings and xmas but thats about it!lol
Still no real signs of being pg, no ms or cravings or anything really.....should be 6w+1 if nothing soon I'll be doing another test just to convince myself that I really am pg!!

LadyLazarus · 02/02/2005 14:05

I don't think I get the "nuchal" test, altho GP did mutter something about triple test... no idea when scan will be or anything yet, I have to take my letter to the hospital next week, and maybe I'll know a bit more then... had first ante-natal clinic appointment at GP today, everything ok so far, BP good, nothing untoward in urine etc, so feeling pretty positive! Have just had to remove my naval stud tho, which was a bit sad, as I'll never be getting that done again!

DecafArabica · 02/02/2005 14:40

Just ate a whole loaf of walnut and raisin bread. A small one, but still, a bit OTT!!

Piccalilli · 02/02/2005 15:07

Hi Jaxpax - to answer your question, I had the early scan because the EPU at my local hospital are fab. They have a walk-in service, which means you may have to wait a while but if they're not busy they'll give you a scan if you have reason to be worried (e.g. bleeding, odd pains), or if you've had a previous miscarriage. I went there with my miscarriage in November so they were happy to do the scan for reassurance.

PicadillyCircus · 02/02/2005 15:39

Had a nice lunch with DH (unusual to meet him but he had a law exam nearby to where I work so we had lunch).

Except I now feel sick .

Have the feeling I am going to be sick. Hope not. I hate not feeling in control of my body.

franch · 02/02/2005 16:05

I know what you mean, PC. Hugs to you and everyone else who's queasy today. After my first 'human' day yesterday, I'm a wreck again today - Mum's here so I've been able to spend most of the day in bed so far, puking at regular intervals. Uterrly miserable. Poor DD hasn't left the flat for days!

Maretta, well done with the stats thread, good thinking

OP posts:
ragtaggle · 02/02/2005 17:40

I think I just make this thread as I am due on 30th September. This is my second baby and it's due 12 days before my dd's second birthday - scary thought.

I just wanted to ask if I'm the only person who hasn't given up alcohol. I have one very small glass of wine most nights on the basis that I did with my first and had no problems. My midwife seemed to think that this was fine first time round - she didn't think it could do any harm with a meal at the end of the day.

Is wine in moderation really bad for the baby, do you think? Or do none of you feel like it? I have to say that despite feeling a bit nauseous generally I most definitely haven't gone off alcohol....

franch · 02/02/2005 17:53

Hi ragtaggle, congratulations and welcome! Do add yourself to the stats thread if you haven't already.

I think the jury's out on the alcohol thing - I hardly drink anyway so it's not really an issue for me, but DH is a medic and advises against it -as this article says, "The problem with recommending ANY safe level of alcohol intake during pregnancy is that the safe levels of episodic drinking have not been clearly defined." Having said that, the Department of Health only goes as far as to recommend limiting yourself to "no more than two units of alcohol a week" - so it's up to you to weigh up the (rather fuzzy and unhelpful) facts, I guess. Does that help at all?!

OP posts:
Tallbird · 02/02/2005 18:36

ragtaggle, I am with you on the alcohol thing, although I do seem to have gone off it a bit at the moment (most unusual for me !). They say that stress is really bad for the developing baby, so I figure that a medicinal glass of wine with a meal can't do any harm. I think that the trouble with all these recommendations is that they vary so much - for example in the USA, I think that alcohol while pregnant is virtually punishable by death, whereas in France, you appear to be allowed to eat unpasturised brie washed down with wine.
I figure that ultimately, a little of what you fancy can't do any harm... its just down to everyone to make up their own minds.

franch · 02/02/2005 19:07

I think you're right Tallbird. One midwife practically prescribed me liberal amounts of wine when my blood pressure went up due to stress in the 3rd trimester of my last pregnancy!

OP posts:
pooka · 02/02/2005 20:50

Andif - go for the scan. After all, if all is well you get to see the baby nice and early rather than waiting weeks and weeks.
I haven't had much alcohol, apart from a vodka and a glass of wine the day I found out, but it WAS New YEar's Eve, so it'd be rude not to, A couple of glasses of wine in total since then. TBH my alcohol consumption was practically nil before conceiving, just because dh not much of a wine drinker (though I love it) and it always seems bad to be opening a bottle of wine for myself
Re: smoke. Have to say that having only just given up when found was pregnant, I really don't mind smoke (did a little when was feeling really rough). Everyone says how easy it is to give up when you're pregnant, but in the absence of debilitating m/s, it isn't - still have cravings. Ridiculous really and really really stupid of me to start again (if only at a much reduced consumption) when dd down to 1 evening feed a day.
Actually managed to eat supper with dd tonight rather than sitting in another room breathing through my mouth. Starting to feel more human. Hope that this is a good sign rather than a bad sign. Fingers crossed.

diane77 · 03/02/2005 09:02

hi all

getting inceasingly worried as to the size of my rapidly growing tummy, one the surgeons at work asked why id put so much weight on the cheeky bugger a question like that from him doesnt surprise me as he is away with the fairies!! I now cannot fit into my normal clothes and am having to find my old stuff i wore when pregnant with dd is anyone else in the same situation?
still havent told very many people dont think i can do this much longer.

LadyLazarus · 03/02/2005 09:20

Diane - are there twins in your family??! I only say that because you can't even tell at all that I am pregnant yet!... Do you think you're a lot bigger than you were at this stage with your first child?

diane77 · 03/02/2005 09:56

i am deinately bigger than last time noone noticed last time i was pregnant until nearly the end!! my husbands a twin and my dads mum was a twin but i thought it wouldnt make much difference as it was on the male side?

YOKEFLEET · 03/02/2005 10:22

I read somewhere that in a 2nd pg you usually get bigger quicker as you are already stretched.

diane77 · 03/02/2005 10:31

i,ve heard this 2 im putting my tummy down to the lack of stomach toning exercises after dd!!!

Beatie · 03/02/2005 10:59

I've been so ill that I have lost 8lbs and Does anyone think it is dangerous to lose so much weight when pregnant?

There's no point in going to the docotr about how rough I feel is there? They won't/can't do anything.

It seems so unfair to be feeling this rough second time round. How am I suppsed to be a good mother at the same time as feeling like I need to be in bed all day. I have actually considered shipping my dd off to my Inlaws for a week but I haven't got quite that desperate. It's a shame my mum still works 5 days per week because she is really local to me and would gladly look after dd if she could and dd would stay with her gladly. I don't think I can say the same of my ILs.

zubb · 03/02/2005 11:07

Diane77 you will probably show a lot quicker with the second as yokefleet says.
Beatie - each pregnancy seems worse at the beginning to me - more tired, more nausea, but I'm sure thats just because with the first you can just rest when you want, but any subsequent ones you have children to look after.
With a 3 and a 1 year old I'm knackered this time, but have to keep going. Just looking forward to the magic 12 weeks when I'll miraculously get all my energy back!

nably · 03/02/2005 11:17

Hi, Beattie - A friend of mine was so ill with her first and puking all the time that her doctor wanted to test that she wasnt dehydrated.

It may be worth calling in to see the doctor just in case. I think if its just nausea then you're considered lucky!!

DecafArabica · 03/02/2005 11:21

I'm getting bigger too. Button just popped off my cords! Had a c/s last time and stomach muscles never really recovered. Re alcohol, last time I went completely off all alcohol until about 20 weeks when I found the occasional glass of wine a real treat. As for fags, I had been up to about 5-10 a day before finding out I was pg; now feel utterly revolted by the smell and can't understand why ever smoked!
