All my waist bands on work clothes are getting uncomfortable so went into Mothercare today to try on some preggy stuff. AWFUL. Very depressing In the end went into Gap and bought some size 16 stuff(ususally UK14). Much better but wont last long at this rate!

Andif - I also got a new bra - very sexy [blush} Enjoy your party if you can.

Does anyone know if you can eat Brie if its pasteurised? or is it the skin thats a prob?

Andif and Boompi, tell me about it. I can only fit comfortably into one pair of jeans. I really don't want to get as big as I did in my last pregnancy (put on about 4st 7lbs) but even though my nose is so blocked I can't hardly taste anything, I just can't stop eating, and I've just bust the button on my fave cords. Last time I just ate minstrels and greasy chips all day long, but so far this time, it's bread all the way.

According to the lovely Emma's diary, pregnant women should steer clear of soft, unpasteurised or blue veined cheese, so that means brie's out.

hello.. sorry to butt in - am from the october thread, so moonlighting...
I ate pasturised brie in my first pregnancy, but i will be depressed if the general advice is against.am a cheese fanatic so find 9 months without quite a trial....
personally ican´t wait to be in maternity clothes again- an excuse to eat what i like (within reason) and sit comfortably in trousers that aren´t too tight!!!

andif · 05/02/2005 17:37

I tend to think any cheese is ok if it is pasteurised, or cooked for that matter. A friend of mine ate those camembert in breadcrumbs things on the basis they were cooked but I think that's stretching a point. In my 1st pg, the health visitor even advised me against eating pizza!!!

The risk is the damage to the baby from us catching listeria, but as I've never caught this in years of eating smelly cheese, I'm fairly laid back - 'a little of what you fancy does you good' as my grandmother used to say!!

Having said all that, I seem to have gone off cheese completely!!

Decaf- I put on about the same amount as you with dd. Promised myself that this time I'd be more abstemious, but it's as if my body craves the most fattening things. Like Boompa I've already moved up into 16 gap jeans (was a size 10 in 2002, pre first pregnancy ) Am finding tops very difficult too.

Report
DecafArabica · 05/02/2005 18:29

Yes, I have a real problem geting long enough tops anyway as have long back and short legs! If you find anywhere that sells long (not baggy) T-shirts and vests please let me know...
I got Trinny & Susannah's book for Xmas and love the way Trinny dressed for pregnancy with dresses over loose-fitting trousers. But at the moment too ill to go shopping for outfits!

Hi ladies - spke too soon about lack of symptoms - feel VERY sick !!!!!
Booked appointment with GP for next Friday.
Decaf - I see you are consulting Emma's diart - has it been updated ?
Would like to get a good pg book aimed at old duffers - can anyone recommend one ?

Boompi · 05/02/2005 20:27

Just ordered a pizza and put on my PJs.M/s def getting less.
I was given three books by a friend and I think best is 'The Best Friends guide to Pregnancy - all the things your doctor wont tell you' by Vicki Iovine. Its North american but no way near as serious as the 'What to Expect..' series and I even found the supposedly light hearted 'Up the Duff' too prescriptive and written for saints. Hair dye and nail varnish are frowned upon never mind the occasional glass of wine or pizza. I really recommended it, its honest, funny and is written by a mother of four. You should be able to get it on Amazon

I've also just ordered pizza (on the internet, couldn't even be bothered to ring) and am in PJs . Tend to get into pjs at any given opportunity because they're so baggy and comfy.
Me too with the long body/short leg combo decaf.
And never been one for tummy hanging out, so need tunicky (?) style cover-ups.
Felt pretty rough again earlier today. Think it's something to do with the M&S food hall/non-cooperative dd combo.

Marinda, the only book I really looked at when last pregnant was the Miriam Stoppard one, but found that it had almost too much information about what can go wrong.
Enjoyed the Vicky Iodine Best Friends.... too, but mostly for the American perspective to pregnancy, birth and beyond, which confirmed my belief that couldn't stand the whole (general) American way of birth (lots of medical intervention, midwives with a lesser role, very little aftercare, having different doctors for different parts of your body (!), and for your baby, 6 weeks maternity leave etc.). I know that services are strained here, but it's still free and there does seem to be a fair emphasis on the mother, particularly after labour, with home visits, referrals to HV's etc.
Anyway - am rambling on. Time to make a nest on the sofa and read my book until pizza time.
Take care.

I think we definitely get looked after more than the American ladies get looked after. I had a midwife visit me everyday for two weeks following my dd's birth because my blood pressure shot up AFTER I gave birth. I hope that doesn't happen again because the BP medication I took made me drowsy and like you need that on top of being up all night with a newborn.

I have "What to Expect when you're Expecting" and hate it. I especially hate the holier than thou diet recommendations. It sayd once in a while you can indulge in a honey/bran muffin WTF? A honey/bran muffin is probably the healthiest thing I could eat ~ certainly not an indulgence.

Report
DecafArabica · 06/02/2005 11:28

Honey and bran muffins! If there are people out there uptight enough to believe those an indulgence rather than a penance, it amazes me that they ever got pg! I think all the books I've looked at are pretty rubbish and don't seem to be about real women. There was a Sheila Kitzinger book I browsed in the library which was aimed at older mothers and that seemed pretty well-written, but a bit out of date re tests. As an older up the duffer that's the only extra info I feel I need, as any other symptoms etc could be experienced by a pg woman of any age.
I like the babycentre's information--very detailed and lots of info available.

Have you tried doing a search on Amazon. I can't believe that someone of more mature years has not written a pregnancy book specifically aimed at that age group

I was incredibly wobbly after dd was born - hormones went crazy, thought I was cracking up etc. and so the midwife visited ME every day, with the normal baby checks as an aside, almost. And then had an excellent health visitor visit several times after care had been transferred. Midwife also rang my dh at about day 24 (i.e. after care had transferred, to ask how I was doing). My gp rang my mother the day I got home to congratulate her! So all in all I felt pretty nurtured, but then I'm pretty lucky with my GP surgery and midwives etc. (apart from when it comes to paperwork, and then they're not out of this world).

franch · 06/02/2005 17:59

marinda, I just had a quick peek at Amazon - there are quite a few books - try this as a starting point?

Beatie - glad you got some Complan - I can't tolerate it every day but try to get some down as often as possible - lots of bonus calcium too if you make it up with all milk.

lol at 'Ronald', Decaf ....

No happy news on the sickness front, I'm afraid - spent ALL day yesterday in bed, utterly miserable - even managed to vomit practically in my sleep at about 6am, before I was even fully conscious! Nice start to the day - bit of a rude awakening for DH too

Today managed to get halfway through the day without vomiting (though not without the ever-present nausea), so got all cocky and decided to go for a walk - not having left the flat for about 3 weeks. Got as far as the end of the street then had to race back at top speed to throw up.

Have eaten cornflakes and sorbet so far today (kept the cornflakes down) - pancakes seem to be the most successful thing at the moment (with lemon juice and LOTS of sugar) so will get DH to make me some later.

Would never have believed I could survive on so little.

Poor you, Franch. Me, I'm eating fine but still not able to breathe properly (on mega dose of antibiotics/asthma drugs) and my nose is so completely blocked I can't smell or taste hardly anything but desperately craving samosas today in the vain hope that chilli power can blast a path through my failed sinus tubes.

Morning All, Hope you are feeling better this morning Franch.

Last night when I went to bed I had 2 sharp stabbing pains in my right hand side (around the rib area) this morning it is not a stabbing pain just uncomfortable, is this pg related?
I'm still feeling v. lucky not to have (so far) had the ms like many of you, mind you I am only 6w+6d at the moment so I guess there is still time!
Have a good day

Hello everyone hope you all had a good weekend. Have been a bit quiet recently as not a good week last week. My sister went for her 12 week dating scan and they found that the baby had died at 8 weeks. She doesn't know I am pregnant. That was all very distressing. And I have been suffering from m/s and exhaustion and headaches. Not actually puking much but retching and feeling motion sickness the whole time which ain't great when much of my day is spent sat in front of a VDU or reading books/drafting documents!

Sallie ~ I am sorry to hear about your sister's sad news. Is it her first pregnancy?

Franch ~ Sorry you are still vomitting so much. I am starting to feel a bit more human. Still I have made arrangements to ship my dd out to a friend this afternoon and to my SILs tomorrow.

I am a sceptic when it comes to homeopathic medicine but I may well have to attribute my feeling better to it. In desperation I rang a Homeopath on Friday and she asked me lots of questions over the phone. She rang me back and asked me some more questions and then told me what pills to go out and buy from the health food shop. What an angel! She didn't charge me or anything.

I sent Dh out for the pills and this little box of pills for £3 may well have been my life-saver. On Saturday the (daytime)nausea started to disappear, although I was still weak and shakey.

I managed to eat a lot more on Saturday and Sunday than the usual handful of dry crackers and I am so pleased to report that the daytime nausea has subsided - allowing me to eat better and get some of my strength back. The other great result is that my permanent headache has gone. I'm still bad at night and have to reture to bed around 5pm but at least I get a feeling of normality during the day.

Franch - perhaps you could try this too??
