Franch - How exciting - I am so glad it went so well - was worried when you hadnt posted

What did they say re nuchal fold? Do they give you a stat or reassurance?

pooka · 19/02/2005 17:14

Re; nuchal fold scans, Boompi, they start off by giving you odds based on age and medical history, then do the scan, measure the fluid on the back of the neck (?), check nosebone there, then give you adjusted odds based on their measurements. So first time round I started with odds of about 1 in 800 and after the scan these odds had lengthened to about 1 in 1200. That was good enough for me to decide not to have more invasive testing. My theory has generally been that if less than 1 in 100 I would definitely have a CVS, since odds of miscarrying are no greater than the odds that baby has chromosomal disorder. Between say 1 in 100 and 1 in 200 I'd have to think about it.
At least that's the theory. Since having dd, her being my baby and knowing that I'd love her whatever, the decision seems a lot less clear cut to me than it was before I had her. But I think that I would at least like to know if the baby I was carrying was definitely going to have d/s etc, and then make a choice based on that certainty.
Who knows? I'm really looking forward to Monday, but am nervous at the same time. And then, if all is well, the booking in appointment is a week later, and I'm looking forward to meeting my midwife again because all of the community midwives were lovely last time.

franch · 19/02/2005 17:20

pooka, BEST of luck for the scan on Mon. Will be thinking of you. Boompi, I wasn't actually given odds yesterday - just told that the 1mm nuchal fold was a good sign (it needs to be about 3mm before they really worry I think) and that my age (33) is a good factor too - they'll give me odds after the other screening tests are complete.

Thanks Franch! So glad the scan went well - more than well!
Oooh, it seems like they do things differently at different hospitals, then - were you at uCH for the scan, then? I'll go to Kings, and did last time.

franch · 19/02/2005 17:36

yep, UCH for scan

LadyLazarus · 20/02/2005 09:21

oh... I just got a leaflet through the post about my hospital care, and I don't get any scans until 20 weeks ... noooo! It's only a 'discussion' and blood test visit at 14 weeks. I just want to know that everything's ok!!

And I feel bad today cos I fell asleep last night with the electric blanket on, and woke up an hour later REALLY HOT !!

mummyhill · 20/02/2005 15:51

Hi everyone. Haven't been able to post for awhile as had pc problems. Congratulations to all that have joined the thread hope everyone is ok. Sorry to hear Sarahbees news I went through that last year myself and was devestated.

Well i stuck to my guns and nagged till i got an early scan and they found i was a little further than they thought!!!! will amend my due date on the stats in a bit, i just think that they give you a slightly different date cause they don't like the edd from dates and edd from scan to match!!!

To all who have managed to give up alcohol well done. I must admit that i still have the ocassional tipple.

Have finally started to tell people in the real world and have had mixed reactions. My Gran has decided that it is too soon after the miscarriage and is put out with me!! But most people are pleased for us and are being really supportive. DD has decided that the baby can't grow in mummy's tummy it has to grow in hers. How do i explain that this isn't the way it works to a three year old? Any body suggest any good books to read to her?

Opps have waffled a bit!!!!

Sallie · 21/02/2005 09:35

Had a cheeky scan on Saturday and all looked well. Little bean was wriggling around and had a good heartbeat. DS was fascinated - DD was more interested in trying to pull all the surgical gloves out of their box! Dates spot on according to the measurements.

andif · 21/02/2005 10:27

Good luck to Pooka with scan today!

Sallie · 21/02/2005 10:29

Good luck Pooka for today and anyone else having their scans this week. My official nuchal scan is a week today....

Beatie · 21/02/2005 12:19

Good luck everyone having scans this week.

LadyLazarus. Your midwife should pick up the baby's heartbeat at your 14 week appointment and that will give you some reassurance. It is a really special feeling to hear the baby's heart beating away. I think I cried the first time I heard it with my DD - at around 13 weeks.

PiccadillyCircus · 21/02/2005 12:26

This thread is getting long again - maybe time for a new one?

I am increasingly tired of being sick . HAve been sick twice today - really thought it was wearing off but obviously not. Am going to get some lunch soon - will probably see it again later on but I am empty.

Will be so glad when I have had my scan (4th March) and I can know things are all right with very small one (DS is small one so this one will have to be very small one).

Looks like our house move may be happening soon - hooray . Contracts should be being exchanged later on this week (we only sold our house in mid-November.....)

zubb · 21/02/2005 12:37

good luck all those with scans this week. Mine is next week - at 13 weeks.
Can't believe that I'm 12 weeks now. Feeling fine, but luckily didn't have much nausea anyway. Got a definate tummy now - was at a family party at the weekend and after everyone found out they all said 'we thought you were looking bigger round your middle!' - charming

Sallie · 21/02/2005 12:50

I am another moving house. We put our house on the market a week ago and within that week, we had an offer close to asking price from first time buyers - perfect! Now we have to find somewhere to live ourselves!!!

Piccalilli · 21/02/2005 13:51

I'm very jealous of everyone with scans this week - mine's not til the 9th and I'm getting very anxious. I don't have that many symptoms so I don't 'feel' pregnant and even though I had an early scan and saw the heartbeat it's difficult not to worry that something has gone wrong.

All you people moving house are very brave! I can't imagine doing that and having a baby at the same time.

diane77 · 21/02/2005 14:40

hi all

good luck to all those having scans this week.
my scan is tommorow and im so excited and nervous at the same time. My dh has taken the day off as the scan is at 9 am so we can do something nice afterwards.
I havent had a great deal of symptoms either the nausea seems to have settled im just left with feeling exhausted and huge sore boobs, i also seem to be feeling extremley itchy over my tummy so must buy some nice cream.

PiccadillyCircus · 21/02/2005 15:02

Moving was planned rather beofre baby (as baby was a Christmas surprise ).

As we hope to move in a few weeks time I will not be too large, but will obviously be unable to do too much to help .

PiccadillyCircus · 21/02/2005 15:02

Oh and just been sick for the third time today .

mummyhill · 21/02/2005 15:42

I went to see my gran, she told me to go on a diet as i have put on weight. Told her that am pregnant and all she could say was "what have you gone and done that for don't you think its a bit soon after the trouble you had last time" Cheers nan thanks for the support!!!! Has anyone else been subjected to insensitive comments from elderly relatives?

maretta · 21/02/2005 15:48

I'm with you Picalili. My scans not until the 10th and it feels like an age away.

I'm sure my stomach's already swelling so at work I always clutch a file in front of myself. I was proud of my baby bump until I read this on a website - 'Your abdomen may begin to pooch out, but it will be more from bowel distension than the uterus.' Doesn't that just make you feel sexy.

Best of luck to all with scans this week. Looking forward to hearing how they go.

YOKEFLEET · 21/02/2005 16:01

We have also just out our house up for sale!!! Must be mad.

Well I will be 9w pg tomorrow and had my booking appointment last week and was told that we would get a 12w scan yippee (from the info the dr had given us it looked like we wouldn't get one until 20w...I was ready for a fight!!) but no date for it yet..
I'm still feeling crap 24/7 but with only 2 bouts of sickness so far, and luckily enough they were both on a weekend so I haven't had to try and cover it up at work! Please tell me I'll bloom soon
Good luck for all you with scans this week and hope that you are all feeling ok today.

PiccadillyCircus · 21/02/2005 16:19

Just going to go and puke once more before going home (I work 8-4:15).

PiccadillyCircus · 21/02/2005 16:24

Puke done . So home I go .

pooka · 21/02/2005 17:18

All lovely at the scan. Have excellent pics, nuchal fold meaurements fine (risk went down from 1 in 600 ish to 1 in 2700 (the risk of a 15 year old - at least part of me is young!).
So relieved to see the heartbeat and to see that this babe is just as uncooperative as dd was - had to do lots of jumping up and down and stomach pinging to get it into position.
So feeling really happy, and relieved and dh has just gone out to buy a celebratory chinese meal. How much I'll eat, I'm not sure, but I really fancy a spring roll!
Thanks for the best wishes, and good luck to all scanees.

pooka · 21/02/2005 17:19

Oh, and agree that we should start a new thread as I notice the June club is rather cocky about how chatty they are and how many threads they've had. I'm up for a fight!
