congrats spacecadet, glad the scan went well! How's the sickness going, has it/ will it calm down?

Azure · 14/02/2005 09:40

Spacecadet glad the scan went well.

I've only told my parents, sister and 3 close friends about the pregnancy so far. I wanted to wait until the scan before I spread the news. Unfortunately I'm going to have to tell my boss in a minute as I have to take time out for my scan tomorrow. I had all Friday afternoon off for my midwife appointment (officially a "hospital visit", without specifying the reason) and I don't want to throw a sickie. It is a very busy week this week at work and there is no way I would normally not be in, unless on death's door. Still, my boss knows about my previous m/cs and has been very sympathetic in the past.

Eulalia · 14/02/2005 10:16

Hi ? am falling behind. Having a busy half term with the kids. Haven?t had a moment to myself. Wondering what to do today as its cold and snowy but not really lying. Ds is desparate for it to snow properly so we can make a snowman.

Welcome Shely.

Oops ? I went through a real panic thing last week as I wasn?t feeling well and it made me realise how everything balances on my shoulders. Can?t rem if I?ve said before that ds has special needs and is a LOT of work. Dd is being the typical 2 year old and is extremely active and I am exhausted with the 2 of them and what am I doing having another ? arggh! However feeling much better now.

Azure ? good luck with your scan.

I weighed myself last week but with clotehs on so not sure but it can?t have put on more than a pound or two ? 16 weeks now and seem to have a big bump so I guess it must just be coming off somewhere else.

Kate ? hope your ds settles soon.

Previous 2 births had a bit of gas and air but it doesn?t agree with me and one short of morphine each time. Hardly had time for it to take effect with dd cos she came so quickly. Both normal deliveries. Ds was 6lb 2oz and dd MUCH bigger ? 8lbs, 7oz ? she was 15 days late though. Hope to maybe use the birthing pool this time for relief and maybe even the birth.

Spacecadet ? great news on your scan. Hope your sickness finaly ends soon.

Must go as the living room floor is gradually disappearing under a mess...

Good Morning - haven't been on since Wednesday and there has been so much chat - hello to new people and congratulations. Azure - sorry to hear your dh can't come to the scan - has your sister managed to arrange childcare so she can come with you? I've got mine this afternoon at 4.20 and I am petrified - just want it over with. I had my booking appointment which took for ever to fill in all my pre-eclampsia and HELLP and two miscarriages ( I think the mw's quite enjoyed having a nice interesting case history to pre over!!!). At least I have NOTES now, so that makes it feel all real. I reckon if all goes well today, I will tell work next week and then I'll have to work my sox off for six months to try to set up the team for the following six months!!!! I'll probably be off until end Feb or March next year - I took about six months after the birth for my other two, but I tend to leave quite early as I haven't made my due date yet!!!!!

Good luck for all the remaining scans and growing bumps....

jellybrain · 14/02/2005 12:27

Hi All,
Just 2 days work this week and then spending the rest of 1/2 term with my parents (no cookingor house work to do yipee).

Eulia- I hope your 1/2 term doesn't get too stressful I understand a little of what you mean. DS 1 has Aspergers Syndrome and its a job sometimes to keep things running smoothly. Everything is sooo literal with him and sometimes I feel I've had to learn a whole new language. He too would be desperate to make a snowman even inthe smallest amount of snow ie snow = snowman doesn't matter how much. Living in the South pathetic snow falls are of course the norm - have had mini snow people living in the freezer more than once

Azure · 14/02/2005 12:46

Good luck with the scan Beachyhead. Jellybrain, we just spent the weekend with my parents and it was bliss - mum even got me breakfast in bed Saturday.

I told my boss I'm pregnant (managed to get a little weepy, I really wish I could stop that - so embarrassing) and he was fine about it. He even said how he must make sure I don't get too stressed in the busy time ahead. Phewwwww.

Dazie · 14/02/2005 15:24

Hi all
well half term is upon us and the week is looking very long and tiring. Tomorrow I have my mid-wife appointment both the children will be with me, hopefully we will get to hear the heart beat. We told ds on saturday he wasnt that impressed its quite a long way off yet but he needed to know why we were going to the hospital so much and why we were visiting the midwife which he remebers from dd last year.

Good luck with the scan beachyhead and for you tomorrow Azure!!

Twiga · 14/02/2005 16:45

Spacecadet, glad your scan went well! Sorry tohear you're still feeling sick though {{{hugs}}}.

All the best for your scan tomorrow Azure, hope your sister managed to arrange to go with you, lol x

Beachyhead, thinking of you and looking fwd to hearing about your scan later.

Spacecadet · 14/02/2005 22:41

just wanted to pop in a say good luck to those still about to have scans

Erinleigh · 14/02/2005 23:53

Hi all - it's a quick one too this time; just to say "hope all goes well" for upcoming scans, Azure and Beachyhead - sorry if I've missed anyone... and thanks, Josey, for jeans info. All okay here, except for the fact it's nearly midnight and I am dying for a fresh, all-organic crunchy green salad, with plenty of the spicy paprika olive oil/vinegar dressing I made today for a salad tomorrow... only prob no salad in fridge RIGHT NOW!!! Anyway, will have to just have another glass of water instead and go to bed starving...

Erinleigh · 15/02/2005 00:35

Can't believe I'm still up... just thinking about food. Just remembered: forgot to reply to you, Colinsmummy, about where I'm from in US... my family lives in Indiana but my mum is from CA and we grew up in upstate NY - the whole story is a proper little house on the prairie-style state-hopping saga! What about you? BTW, my bro is in LA, and I have uncles in Phoenix, Portland, and New Mexico. NB: We are all a bunch of travelling hippies...

Erinleigh · 15/02/2005 00:43

Won't be so chatty and chirpy tomorrow at 7 am with (always) starving 2-year-olds whacking me in the face with their little "comfort" blankets, shouting at me to "Get up, mummy - go downstairs!" I'm sure you all are being sensible pg people and expect you went to bed at 8 pm...

Spacecadet · 15/02/2005 08:53

actually I am never in bed before 12 Erinleigh, and I pay for it the next day!!

beachyhead · 15/02/2005 08:58

Well had the scan and the baby is there and heartbeat OK. Still my results and odds were pretty rubbish, so feeling a bit down. Before the scan, for my age, my odds were 1 in 68 (i'm 39) and after the scan they improved to 1 in 126 of Downs. Well, I am in a real quandry now as I really don't like those odds. I have nothing to relate them too and I really don't know what to think. They implied a CVS would probably not be a good move as that has a m/c potential of 1 in 50, but amnio might be worth it which is only 1 in 100, (but you can't do that for another 4 weeks) plus you are getting quite late in the day by that point...... So we are going to pay and have the combined test (which is another scan plus blood tests) which can apparently give a more accurate result. That is scheduled for next Monday and I am just hoping it bumps us wildly up or down so I will know whether to go amnio or not....

If anyone else has had odds around this level, I'd love to hear them (or is anyone is as old as me!)

Am feeling v. pissed off I can't tell anyone yet - in fact just generally pissed off......

Good luck Azure and hope you don't read this before you go - should have posted later but have full on presentation this morning.....

Azure · 15/02/2005 09:23

Beachyhead I'm happy the baby was there and the heartbeat ok. I'm sorry to hear about the new uncertainties as a result of the odds you were given - are 1 in 68 really the standard odds for a 39-year old? It's good news that your odds improved as a result of the scan, but I know you would hope it to be a lot better. I wonder what's the best it could possibly be for this age. I'm 38 and have been thinking about this the last day or two. The leaflet I got from the hospital said that if odds were worse than 1 in 300 I would be referred to a genetic counseller - have you been offered the same? Are the blood tests you are going to have the triple ones (if that's what they're called)? I have those booked for next month - the midwife automatically did it. I think it's a good idea to go private for the additional tests at this stage. With regard to further tests, it depends what you would do with the information. If you would not terminate a pregnancy as a result of a Down's disgnosis, is it worth the risk of an amniocentesis? On the other hand, the uncertainty may be unbearable. I know there have been a number of threads where people have been deciding what tests to do - I've made a mental note to read them if I am in a similar situation. Hopefully your tests on Monday will give you some reassurance. My scan is at 11.30am and my sister and/or my mum and maybe even my sister's youngest is coming (my dad is looking after at least the eldest), so it may be a crowded room. I'll report back later.

beachyhead · 15/02/2005 09:30

The tests are purely for Downs and it is the Combined Test (scan and bloods) at the Fetal Medicine Centre in Harley Street. I think mentally before we had prepared for about 1:150 to be OK. So it is quite close to where we wanted (but not close enough).

At my age, the best I could have got after the scan would have been about 1:250 apparently, according to the m/w. If I have the combined test, it may take it above that, I guess, or a lot below.

We have discussed the termination possibility and I'm afraid that is a route we would follow. It's a personal choice and one that both me and dh have always held. However, I hadn't realised that amnio can only be done at 16 weeks and that does put a slightly different light on it all - it is so far down the path.....

So I am full of hope that Monday will give us the figures to be able to carry on and have no more testing....

Just keep wondering what on earth I am doing this all for.

I had my scan at 7 weeks at the Fetal Medicine Centre. I respect whatever decision you might make going forward - hopefully it won't get to that stage. You may not want to know and it may not be the right time, but apparently at a 12-week scan the Fetal Medicine Centre can normally tell the sex of the baby, which is amazing. My fingers and toys are crossed for you.

I asked about the nasal bone test and Tommy's were really 'oh, that's just research at the moment and no-one knows if it is relevant'. It really annoys me that they don't give you the average (after the scan) for women of my age. So the scan improved my odds, but did it improve them enough? as much as everyone else?

I hate the fact that I may be worrying about nothing, but that they have given me this figure that means nothing to me, because I have no universe to compare it with...... (I did stats at University and this is just like giving you one plot on a graph and saying well do you think that's good) I DON'T KNOW.......
