i have pains in my ribs too!!! and everytime i cough i feel like i might break a rib... what is this madness?

jenpet · 13/07/2008 13:52

Oh, can I join in with this too, except my rib-pain is worst when I lie down. It feels like someone has actually knifed me in the ribs! Always the same spot too - am assuming it's some kind of heartburn/baby squashing vital organs type thing??

eandz · 13/07/2008 13:55

in my 'what to expect when your expecting' it's called rib tickling...but believe me it's very painful.

it hurts me when i'm laying down too jenpet. argh i wonder what pain awaits me next.

jenpet · 13/07/2008 14:08

Well, it'll be replaced by something equally as bad that's for sure!

hopefully · 13/07/2008 14:14

Mustsleep your day sounds very silly - glad you got everthing sorted in the end though.

I have had a v fun day today so far. Went to pick-your-own place this morning and got loads of peas and beetroot and other veggies and going to prep them and freeze them. Was nice getting out in the fresh air, and feel v healthy having a freezer full of fresh picked veg!

mamamufin · 13/07/2008 17:01

That sound lovely hopefully I would love to do that.
No rib tickling here, but then I have big boobs so maybe they are cushioning it .
Ive been to shops and it was lovely we stopped for tea and cake too. Got my mirror so just need to persuade dh to put it up.
I have a confession . I actually have no idea how to add things onto the list. I am really bad with computers. I have always asked my dh to alter my details when needed. But as I want my mirror up I dont want to push my luck. I plan to give birth in York District hospital as natrally as possible.

oops sorry for the double click, my broadband's playing up.

Welcome to newbies

I've literally had rib-tickling, where the baby kicks and wriggles right under my ribs and it feels really ticklish and makes me jump. But I do also get the occasional pain from over-eating, where my belly is a bit too full of food and squashing my lungs.

mustsleep we went to Ikea on Friday night too! But spent ages looking at the cots thinking they didn't look too sturdy. Perhaps my local Ikea (it was the branch that started an actual riot when they opened at midnight with a sale and there was also a stabbing in the car park) isn't as well 'cared' for and the shop assistants don't bother to fix any of the furniture they have on display.

We did however buy some cute little pictures to put up in the baby's room, plus a gorgeous little lamp shade for the main light.

Then yesterday we went to visit the in-laws and 'Hooray hooray!' they gave us some Mothercare vouchers. Which we promptly blew today in one massive spending spree.

I feel soooooo much better for having bought some baby stuff.

As of today we now have a moses basket and breathable mattress, a pack of sleepsuits/vests/mittens/booties/hat, a car seat base and head hugger set, blankets and sheets, muslin cloths, nappies! (biodegradable), nappy bin, baby grooming set, sudocrem, breast pads, maternity pads, cotton wool, anti-bacterial wipes, calpol...phew!

All that's left is big cot, changing table, changing mat, bouncer, ear thermometer, moses stand, swaddling blanket and bathing stuff.

But, I'm very nearly ready to pack my hospital bag How amazing is that!!

I've even stuck all the new stuff in the wash already. I feel so bloody organised!

To all those suffering 'mild' SPD, I've recently found that sleeping with my feet raised on a stack of pillows has alleviated a lot of the pain. I was doing it to try and reduce the swelling in my feet and ankles, but now I'm wondering if my SPD and oedema are related (or it might just be a coincidence).

All this talk of hospital tours has reminded me I must squeeze another hospital tour in before end of Aug. We went to see it very early on, I remember the ante-natal and post-natal wards being a bit shabby but the labour ward looking well equipped. Not looking forward to getting into the car as the contractions get closer.

starlight brilliant advice as ever, I love it!

becaroo · 13/07/2008 18:44

My hospital - the QMC in Nottingham - dont do tours...its a virtual tour via the website ....I also missed out on a tour with ds because I had him on 13th June and my tour was booked for the 14th June

Lovely to see everyone who came for lunch today....got another one next week (only for 6 this time) and then thats me done entertaining for a few months!

Lots to do in the next week and a half til my ds breaks up for > aarggh!

Major cleaning needs doing, new carpet and wooden floor to be laid, all baby stuff down from loft, cot and moses basket ready etc etc.......phew need a lie down just thinking about it all

biglips · 13/07/2008 18:49

About the sore rib thing....i had it a few times now as its more of a nerve thing for me so if i put my finger on it whilst im walking..its ok!!

im struggling getting out of bed lately again as loose pelvis joint is on and off plus ive got a throbbing nerve from my right side fanjo/leg joint all the way to my right side rib and its hurts!! Again i put my hand on it to press it and its ok. Am i falling apart like a lego???

notcitrus · 13/07/2008 18:55

starlight - excellent advice - for once Mr NC won't be able to complian about my taste in music! On the other hand, don't want him running away...

Mr NC is collecting a pile of newborn stuff from SIL2 today, plus yet more stuff from her mum who is a terror regarding Freecycle and similar - I think SIL2 has 5 pram/pushchair devices already, and I've seen at least four potties...

I think all we need to start with is more hats, sheets for Moses basket and cot, muslins and wipes, couple more blankets, and maternity pads - we've decided which chest of drawers will be a changing table and who and what will sleep in which room if the loft isn't done before Squirmy comes out. Mr NC also wants to pack the hospital bag so I'd better look up that bit of this thread for him!

MIL called today, and did as predicted suggest that it would be nice if we could produce a quartet of granddaughters in the next couple years to go with this year's crop of 4 grandsons. I told her I'd get back to her - she was mostly joking. SIL3 is due next week apparently, so that will be interesting...

kiskidee · 13/07/2008 19:13

Last weekend I got the baby stuff from the loft and washed them. This week I sorted and stored them away all neatly. Newborn and 0-3 mo in the wardrobe. 3-6 mo stuff (neatly away ) still stored but no longer in the loft. I am pleased that that job is out of the way.

The only thing I haven't yet bought is a new baby car seat. DD1's was part of a travel system which I hated and except for the car seat used about 5 times.

I have all my wraps (10), mei tais (4) ringslings (2) pouches (1) in the wardrobe with the baby's stuff. I felt a bit guilty about having so many carriers but not guilty enough to get rid of any.

Sassafrass · 13/07/2008 19:41

Kiskidee, I wish I had that many carriers =) It's kinda addictive to keep getting different ones though isnt't it. I ordered my elastic wrap the other day and am now eagerly awaiting it's arrival.

MummyToOneForNow · 13/07/2008 19:48

Kiskidee - as you have so many which carrier would you recommend for a newborn? I have a babsling which I ised with dd (hip carry position) when she outgrew the babybjorn sling (which got used a huge amount but I ahve heard they are not so good for the baby in the way they are held).

I'm hoping that I will get on okay with feeding in the babasling but the weight will be carried unevenly so I was wondering about investing in another sling of some sort where the weight is evenly on both shoulders - any recommendations?

digitalgirl · 13/07/2008 19:52

Have posted this in health, but can anyone recommend a thermometer for the baby? The only one in mothercare today was a Braun ear one for £40.

MummyToOneForNow · 13/07/2008 19:59

digital - I use a digital thermometer from boots (about £7) that you put under the arm (or in the mouth for an older child/adult. Need to be aware that an underarm reading is slightly lower but we have found it fine. Don't go for the forehead strips - apparently very inaccurate - fine for telling if you have a temperature or not but not how high.

digitalgirl · 13/07/2008 20:04

thanks mummy2one - I've already got a regular digital thermometer that I was using when charting my temps...maybe that will do.

jenpet · 13/07/2008 20:49

Becaroo I had DS1 at QMC, it was 6 years ago now, so I'm sure a lot has changed. I had him in the birthing pool there (hadn't planned to, I just didn't want to get out!) and that bit was wonderful. Can't say I was too impressed with the ward after - dirty showers/toilets etc and the food OMG! but overall I've no real complaints about the care or the facilities...see how it compares this time around (a few French mums have told me they bring you a glass of champagne after the delivery, not sure whether I'm being wound up or not!

becaroo · 13/07/2008 21:24

Jenpet...all being well I am hoping for a homebirth, but you never know.

My last hospital experience was awful - Derby City General - the food was so bad it was almost funny and the showers and toilets were indescribably filthy. No wonder hospital bourne infections are on the rise!

Also, no one told me that breakfast was self serve so I missed out on my first morning - although as they put it out right next to the filthy toilets it kind of dampened my appetite anyway!

If all goes ok, you can go home in 8 hours after delivery so that might be an option if I dont get my homebirth for whatever reason.

Have been on the QMC website and cant find a link for a virtual tour anywhere Must ask at my next ante-natal appointment where the delivery suite is!!

splishsplosh · 13/07/2008 21:27

Jenpet and eandz
the registrar said my rib pain could be intercostal chondritis - which i think is just inflammation or irritation of bits between ribs. The m/w said it could be that baby was bracing its legs against my ribs and causing pain, and she said I should ask for physio as that might help.

Mine moves about from the front of my ribs up under my boob, down the side, or round the back, but always on the right hand side. It's my only real complaint - other than just feeling very tired, but then getting up at 6am every single day for dd and not going to bed early because of the ancient dog who'll wee on the floor if she doesn't go out late at night and early morning, selfish p who never takes his keys and expects me to open the door for him any time of night or just watching tv / being on mumsnet is no doubt to blame for that!

I'm feeling envious or everyone's organisation. Next week we have to try and pack everything up to put into storage so the house can be re-wired - at least I suppose it'll prompt me to throw things away, and locate the baby things. I wish i knew if it was a girl or boy though so I knew whether to get the pink things out or not

kiskidee · 13/07/2008 21:42

Re Slings: For a first timer I would go with a Hug-a-bub or Moby. They are stretchy wraps which makes it easier for first timers for lots of reasons.

Because they are stretchy, they are forgiving for newbies. Then it means that you can pop the baby in and out without untying.

It looks complicated but in just one day, you will master using it. The fabric is one size fits all, so overgenerous if you are petite. Just take it another once or twice around your waist to keep the ends from dragging. But it means that you and dh can happily use the same wrap as long as you don't go for pink or lilac.

hang on, will link my favourite video with a wrapping daddy.

eandz · 13/07/2008 21:43

splishsplosh, mine too is only on the right side. my doctor told me my ribs are expanding.
