kiskidee...can you let us know where to get the wraps from and how much they are?

Had a baby bjorn last time but it didnt get used as ds was too small to use it for months and then screamed his head off when I tried to put him in it!

Anyone else getting..erm...pain right at the top of their lady bits? I feel like the baby is dancing on my cervix!!!! (sorry if TMI!)

kiskidee · 13/07/2008 21:52

thorstein the wrapping daddy

he has a few videos on youtube. he is a sweet daddy.

there are other positions to carry a newborn in and it is possible to bf in one of these wraps. it just takes a bit of getting used to and trial and error.

mamamufin · 13/07/2008 21:55

Yes a great chance for a clear out splishy. I ve had a big clear out this afternoon and feel so much better for it. I also located the final baby things, steriliser, nappy wrapper and tomy mobile. I cant find the baby swim ring, swim nappy or some bibs. However after nearly 4 years and 2 major house moves I reckon this is acceptable .
I have only two more needed purchases then im done I think. One is the sling so kis if you had to buy just one sling and wanted to breast feed in it. What would be your choice? Ive been so confused with this.
I also want the baby bjorn 1-2-3 bouncer [LOOKING ON EBAY] I have chosen this one as it goes up to age 2. My ds could tip his bouncer at 5 months and I ended up having a buggy in the house for him to nap in, chill in, watch tv in etc for 18 months. I am hoping this bouncer will aviod this.
eANDZ your mil sounds fab. Is she good with babies?

Thanks Kis. It took me so long to post my message you had already answered my question!

I got most of my carriers from the yahoo group: UKbabywearingSWAP. Google it. Definitely worth joining. Wraps, MT's etc. keep much of their value so they sell on for a good price if you buy something and don't get on with it, or just bored and want to get money to buy a different one.

cough. this is what my sling stash looks like, more or less.

MummyToOneForNow · 13/07/2008 22:16

Thanks kiskidee - I like the sound of the moby and hug-a-bub and they look straightforward to tie - a couple of questions though: Are they effectively just a long piece of cotton jersey fabric (and so could just buy some fabric or is there more to it than that? Also - I was just looking on one of the uk sellers websites and saw a comment that "larger breasted women hay have difficulty feeding in the hug-a-bub" - do you think that is fair - would a G cup present problems ?

kiskidee · 13/07/2008 22:16

oh, one disclaimer: some people find breastfeeding in a ring sling the bees knees. in fact, i agree that once you get over the learning curve, it is dead simple to bf in a ring sling. quicker and easier than a wrap maybe. I just don't care for the extra fabric with r/s but in the house I would happily put up with it. look for a slingmeet in your area. there is bound to be at least one mum who makes it look so easy.

get an unpadded r/s though. the pad on padded ones are pointless. a ring sling, properly worn will easily carry a 20 lb baby without aches and pains.

mamamufin · 13/07/2008 22:18

Thats a very impresive collection kis . I can see me getting into this wrap thing. A silly question but Would my pashminas be of any use? they look similar.

Gosh Im so slow.

kiskidee · 13/07/2008 22:23

they are a long piece of jersey. However, if you are to buy 5m of medium weight cotton jersey, then cut it in two, you do have 2 wraps but have spent the equivalent for just one. But the advantage of having 2 wraps is that when one gets covered in sick or poo you still have another one to wear while that one is in the wash.

A mum here on MN, Tinkerbellesmum, but she has been messing with her name lately, said that if you are in Notts and go to the Lace Market, the Asian fabric shops have excellent cotton jersey for a good price. You just have to ask for it as they tend to keep certain fabrics on unreachable shelves. She also knows which market in Birm'ham has it too but I can't remember where.

as for large breasts, then go with a ring sling at first. it takes a bit of fuss to learn to put them on right but they are sooo worth it. If you get one, let me know and I will find a video on youtube to help. As long as you buy one new howver, they come with DVD's these days. again, slingmeets are indispensable for working out the little nuances of wearing one.

kiskidee · 13/07/2008 22:23

No, pashmina fabrics are too slippery. you want fabric with a bit of 'grip'.

crabby · 13/07/2008 22:24

I would love to have some rib tickle action! My LO has now been breach for 31 weeks!! Anyone else in the breech and now starting to get anxious club?

kiskidee · 13/07/2008 22:38

If you want to buy new, bigmamaslings has a wide range. good price and excellent customer service. she will answer tons of newbie questions to help you make a sensible choice.

bogie · 13/07/2008 22:40

becaroo are you from nottingham then????? I am having this one at nottingham city hospital same place I had ds it was great and they have a hotel for dp to stay in.

MummyToOneForNow · 13/07/2008 22:57

crabby - mine was breech at 28 weeks but am getting a fair amount of movement so fingers crossed will turn soon - have a m/w appt in 10 days (31 wks) so will see then! I think dd turned about 31 weeks or so into the head down position - no need to worry yet anyway - they can turn until quite late on. Apparently the thing to do is spend lots of time on your hands and knees...

Sassafrass · 13/07/2008 23:29

Love the sling collection Kiskidee. Did I spot a storchenwiege there? Looked just like the one I used for ages with dd1.

I've ordered this one for this baby as I never had a stretchy wrap with dd1. gypsymama stretchy wrap

kiskidee · 13/07/2008 23:33

There is an Ulli and an Inka there. Storchs rock. I actually have 2 Ullis. There is a short one and a long one. I use the short one to make a what is called a no-sew ring sling and rucksack carry.

kiskidee · 13/07/2008 23:35

I remember you mentioning the GypsyMamma. It is gorgeous. I won't be getting any stretchy wraps as I have enough wovens. They rate really well among mums so I know you will love it. I also have seen good things about tricot slen (again stretchy) but will have to take the words of others on it.

kiskidee · 13/07/2008 23:47

here is someone's blog showing you how to make a no-sew ring sling. you can use plain cotton bought in any fabric store. If you like, an old bedsheet will do for an experiment. the rings however are specially made but can also be bought from BigMamaSlings.

youtube has lots of videos on how to wear them and nurse in them. I am always happy to talk bore you to death about slings so don't be shy about asking questions.

Sassafrass · 14/07/2008 09:20

The Ulli is beautiful, I was having a hard time deciding between that one and a storchenwiege when dd1 was little, I could only afford the one =/

LittleConnie · 14/07/2008 09:24

kiskidee your collection is amazing! I'm v short with big boobs and was thinking of buying a wilkinet as it looks comfy and dh would be comfortable using it too. Anyone with experience of one of these? I'm guessing that I won't be able to bf in one though... so maybe a ring sling would be better - v confusing

mumiyumi · 14/07/2008 09:48

Really need to get organised and sort baby bits out from the loft...finish work on Thurs...."YIPPEE"...... going away for a week on fri so will look at doing it all when we get home, dh has mentioned maybe i should look at getting the bags sorted, don't realise how little time is left!

Can't believe a thread for BFP's march 09 has appeared it doesn't feel that long ago that was us!! does anyone else agree how quick it's gone?

Ponymum · 14/07/2008 09:54

Becaroo to answer your question, yes, I have been getting pain in the same place! Mine feels sort of like a violent reverse smear test. (Sorry, TMI, but don't know how else to explain it). But it seems to have stopped in the last week or so.

Just when I thought I was nearly organised with all the stuff to buy, all this talk of slings... more decisions to confuse me, but it sounds like I have to get one!

All of our baby things are now stacked up in the spare bedroom, and DH and I are both starting to get quite excited. But.. we are still planning to move house before the big day and don't yet have a date. I think the hormones are making me gloss over this as a slightly inconvenient detail, rather than the insanely crazy challenge that I suppose it is. La, la, la....

kiskidee · 14/07/2008 10:01

I have never tried a wilkinet but i can't see how they would be easier to bf in than in a wrap esp. early days. I would try a ringsling if i was heavy in the boob department.

I could set up a thread in Arts and Craft and give ringsling instructions, making and wearing there. Would anyone like that?

I could also do a woven/stretch wrap resource somewhere else but i am at work so should not even be talking slings at the mo.

hopefully · 14/07/2008 10:57

Ooh, I am officially into my last 3 weeks at work! I can't wait!

For anyone who's interested in doing the london meet up, I'm going to scan through the thread in a few mins and suggest a couple of dates - if you haven't put what dates you're available, feel free to go an add yourself"
