Elsy, the first time round I had very persistent MS, mexican meals were one of the few meals I actually looked at, wanted to eat, and really enjoyed! But always had to have piles of sour cream!
I've posted a list I came up with before of all the things that were suggested to me, some more helpful than others, and funnily enough often the least attractive sounding ones (like crackers first thing) were the most effective.
- Eat little and often, and if you're worried about weight gain, try plain crackers. If struck first thing in the morning, keep a little container next to the bed and before you even get up, eat a cracker. I really wish I'd listened to this advice earlier on. And a plain cracker isn't as unattractive as it sounds. Rich tee are good too.
- If you wake up in the night for a pee (who doesn't?) take the opportunity to eat another cracker! It will give your sugar levels a little boost and stop you feeling too bad first thing in the morning.
- Try not to rush around too much first thing in the morning - and have a sustaining breakfast like porridge or shreddies.
- Graze during the day, and try to avoid high sugar foods - high protein is the best for maintaining sugar levels without getting sudden surges and dips. Its the surges and dips that can really make MS worse.
- If you look at food and think you can't eat it, try giving it a go anyway, shut your eyes if you have to!
- High juice foods are good too - things that are moist when you eat them, like pineapple, tomato - you get the gist.
- Seabands, they worked for me, I wore them to work.
- Preggie pops, order them on line and sit and suck on them. The sour fruit flavoured ones are the best IMO. Other sour sweets, like starburst or the Haribo sours are quite good too apparently!
- Any ginger product is good - such as ginger biscuits and ginger beer are although they didn't work for me.
- Being tired will make it worse, so try to rest whenever possible
- Carry emergency snacks in your handbag for when you're out and about. Towards the end I swapped my 'healthy' fruit and nut bars for Mars bars. Was in a meeting and lunch was being served late so excused myself for a 'natural break' and scoffed the mars bar in the loo . Fortunately I remembered to check there was no chocolate on teeth before returning to the meeting.
Hi Starshine, hope you found something for tea! Sorry you've got it bad too, next time you could try protein and carbs, like roast chicken and jacket potato with salad as the low grease content is less of a trigger, I've been a bit jacket potato and tomato crazy just recently!
My MW said the protein content also gave a long steady release of sugars rather than a quick hit, and its the quick hits you body can't cope with making you feel nauseous, although there are other 'reasons' given out there.
Also, I often found that when I looked at a plate of food the thought of eating it was much worse than the actual act, and once I'd got the first mouthful in, I could enjoy the rest...there were also occasions when that didn't happen - I will probably never eat another roasted vegetable quiche in my life - euuuggghhhhh - vomitous green face not envy!!
And on that note...morning everyone !
