Lets hope it's not too long before everyone is hatched and milking season is in full swing!

UDCake - I have got a breastpump, I did just brave the last feed and did it in tears. Might try the pump next time.
Next guests are on Saturday, have 4 bathrooms and 1 kitchen to clean by then, plus some ironing, tidy garage, etc...etc... Dh is just making beds then his next job is hoovering.

aberdeenhiker · 10/07/2008 10:43

Essie - I knew it wasn't your field but thought you might have university access. My lab only subscribes to marine journals but when I was university-based I had access to everything.

I've a grunty-farty baby too. Fraser's not been able to settle since 3:30 this morning. He sleeps for 30 minutes, then wakes and cries until he farts, then sleeps again. I'm so hoping this is just a temporary stage...

Congrats to all the new babies!

whinegums · 10/07/2008 11:14

Have been dying to catch up with you all! Laura, love the name Charlotte too, and hope the four of us can meet up soon? BDQ, if you fancy a trip west maybe we can make a sixsome at some point?

Anyway, here's the story. Had a bit of show on Saturday and a few cramps, woke up early hours Sunday and waters went spectacularly - it really was the Carmina Burana Old Spice ad. Went to hospital Sunday morning to get checked; had been having contractions every 10 mins or so, but they totally stopped at hospital.

Hospital policy is to induce if labour not started within 24 hours - at this point, I was still trying to avoid induction. Went home to see if things would kick off - watched the tennis, on birthing ball, wandering around, etc. Pains off and on - treated with bath, whisky and ginger (had promised myself a small drink when I went into labour!) and paracetamol. Didn't get any sleep - really painful contractions every 10 - 15 mins during night, but didn't speed up.

So. Monday morning, had had enough, and went to the hospital. Had lovely lovely midwife - but didn't like doctor. Grrr. Anyway - was monitored for 30 mins, and all fine then checked - 2 cm and in early labour. Thought I would have been given prostin, but Dr Evil insisted on drip straight away. So (after scoffing 2 bags of crisps) was hooked up to drip, antibiotics, monitor, etc. Contractions not too bad til about 1pm, had some co-drydamol. Lovely mw replaced by bitch mw for an hour over lunch. Decided to ignore her. Had gas and air when lovely mw came back - wish I'd insisted on it straight away, marvellous stuff. I was off my tits, crying with laughter. As everyone says, didn't take the pain away, but I didn't care - felt like being very nicely stoned.

Synto drip kept being increased, and I was coping ok, so mw turned it down, contractions still nice and strong. but all fine. Got second mw, who I'd seen a couple of times at antenatal, also lovely. Dr Evil came back and turned synto right up, insisted on clip on babe's head refused for a while til I was out of my head with pain.

Examined at 4pm, only 4cm, so had some morphine. Sort of lost it then - started shaking violently, feeling sick, v painful. Thought it was reaction to morphine. Expected hours more of the same so begged for epidural. Anaesthetist showed up, spent 20 mins explaining everything with me weeping through it, even though I kept saying I'd already read the info card, I didn't mind, just give me it. Eventually they started to set up, and I suddenly wanted to push. Fully dilated in less than 2 hours, so no epidural.

Pushed for all I was worth for maybe 30 mins - not quite sure - and Barnaby born spot on 6.30pm. I had three grazes, despite his 36cm head, and will be eternally grateful to midwife, even though I was screaming at her at the time. Roared my head off in fact, voice several octaves deeper afterwards!

Baby looked like a Ribenaberry when he came out, needed aspiration, Apgar 7, but Apgar 9 at 10 mins. Had skin to skin, and he started rooting almost straight away - likes his nosh!

Got home yesterday, and he's been brilliant - we all got some sleep last night - postnatal wards not conducive to rest! - and he's sparked out again next to me. I'm milk bar today, pneumatic tits, thank God I got gel packs - and for perineum too, straight from the freezer, bliss, they are doing the trick.

Sorry for mammoth mammoth post, really wanted to share with you all and get it all out! Feeling great and very very very lucky all round.

Lots of love all from Whinegums and Baby Whinegums xxxxx

Rolf · 10/07/2008 11:24

Well done Whinegums . Sounds like you liked the gas and air! Did you actually call him Dr Evil (hoping you did!)?

Congratulations Hellbell

HOw are you feeling now Deb? I think my mastitis started like that when I had DD1. I remeber how painful it was, so you really do have my sympathy. I think I tried home remedies for about 12 hours before giving up and having antibiotics. Do you have some savoy cabbage? It's very soothing. x

sophiewd · 10/07/2008 11:48

Congratulations Hellbell.

A post natal thread has been started and a few have signed up to it.

Will be a bit erratic over the next fortnight as we are moving out today and someone moving in, God its hard work getting the house sorted and moving stuff for 2 adults a toddler a baby and a dog.

Nettiehay and Hoggle haven't posted for a while.

Eek- how many babies!! Congrats to all, and great birth story whinegums.

Don't know if any good Debs but when I was struggling with bf pain I expressed for two days and went back to BF when calm and bobs rested. It didn't hurt then. Just a thought.

Josie57 · 10/07/2008 14:44

hellbell - I found the afterpains so bad at times during feeding that I thought I was going to be sick! After going through labour it's really not fair to be lumbered with afterpains too - what a design fault that is!

poppy34 · 10/07/2008 15:28

congrats whinegums and welcome baby whinegums.

debs really hoping clinic sorted you out as you're having a tough time of it... have got mastitis on one breast and have done since milk came in.. and bloody tedious it is too.

hellbell congrats adn sorry re after pains - mine were really bad for about 3/4 days then eased off.

debinaustria · 10/07/2008 15:34

Back from the hospital and sitting here with cabbage leaves on my breast!! She said that it was a warning sign to take things easier otherwise I will get mastitis. She refreshed my memory about different feeding positions, told me to apply hot flannel before feeding then cold compress, cabbage leaves, frozen peas after ( not all at once) She advised me to feed lying down at night as it's better for the hormones apparently and more conducive to sleep. The last few nights I'd been attempting to get up and feed in the vain hope that he'd take more and sleep longer, will go back to co-sleeping for the next few weeks I think. She even gave me a cabbage to take away with me, some cold compresses and a muslin cloth!!

So I'm glad I've been and I can try to make things better. Will take it easy today and hope for a better nights sleep.

Hellbell - afterpains - I had tablets for these in hospital.

Upsidedowncake · 10/07/2008 15:56

Poor Debs. I feed lying down, and it does help rest. LOL, you getting your five-a-day by external application! I hope things go better tonight.

Hope you don't mind me posting my good news. All the syringe feeding and breastfeeding counsellors have paid off as D has gained a wopping 12 ounces in the last week! I thought she was feeding quite well and I guess she was. I was induced for pre-eclampsia so I think she has just been making up the weight that she should have gained inside.

And also, my iron levels have risen from 7.8 to 10.4 in a week! They were expecting it to be about 9.0. So the iron tablets and beef have made a difference - I do feel loads better as well.

ktpie · 10/07/2008 16:29

Hi everyone,
Have taken to keeping up by checking on my phone, not yet figured out how to post from there though. DH is downstairs with the baby so taking the chance to come on here properly. Congratulations to DQ, Whinegums, Hellbell and anyone else I've missed.

We are starting to get into the swing of life with a baby. He seems to be fairly good most of the time, tends to feed a lot at night until 2 or 3 ish then usually sleeps until morning.

Whinegums I was very jealous to see you didn't need any stitches. I've found them the worst thing. Discovered the other day that the stitches at the end of the cut had come away leaving what looked like a hole, called the midwife out in a panic and she had a look and said it was held together by more stitches underneath so not to worry. Sitting on it really hurts though! Could do with some gas and air every time I go to the loo or sit down!

libralady · 10/07/2008 16:48

Bloody Hell, a windows update didn't agree with my router so my PC has been down since Tuesday night so I'm just off to catch up with all the news.

BTW, Luke has his procedure tomorrow afternoon at Odstock. The NHS can be quick sometimes!!!!! They wanted me up there yesterday after they called me at 9:45, but with childcare for DS1 it was not practical.

Right off to catch up with 2 days worth of posts NOW!!!!!!

needahand · 10/07/2008 17:53

Hi all quick one for me as I never seem to have time to post these days.

Congrats to Laura whinegums and BDQ so glad it all went well and that you have your little ones at last

debs sorry you have such a tough time with feeding. Thanks for the tip re feeding lying down. I had stopped too as SJ seemed have the milk coming out of his nose at the same time as he was feeding when I did that and I thought that getting up to feed him was better. But the problem is that it takes me ages to go back to sleep afterwards. Will try feeding lying down again.

Re tummy front, feels like I have lost all sensations in my "pouch" must be because of all the distanded skin. Odd

Right have to go back to my activities. Not content with having a four week old I thought I would spice things up a bit by having loads of visits and a job interview to prepare for next week! Am I mad or am I utterly mad. Answer on a postcard.

Big hugs to all (I am still lurking even if I don't have much time to post)

Ohh and looney your friend has serious issues, the words "basket case" spring to mind!!

PS took SJ for cranial osteopath this week and it really made him better

pleasechange · 10/07/2008 17:59

Hi there, only now finally managing to log in! Sorry for reporting in so late, and congratulations to those others who were in the overdue club with me last week!

Well Alexander was born on 2 July, 8 days late, weighing 8lb 9oz. Short birth story:

No signs whatsoever on Monday 1st. Woke up as normal on Tues 2nd and DH went to work. Got up at 7.45 and got into shower. Contractions started in shower - finished and went to blow dry hair, thinking these were either BH or I was in early labour. Within 10 mins, contractions were unbearable and 4 mins apart. Called DH to come home, and we went into hospital. On first examiniation at 9am I was 5cm dilated already!

Gas & air was pointless so I requested an epidural at around 11am. This slowed things down and it took until 9pm to be fully dilated. Pushed for 1.5 hours and they said I'd need to go into theatre to have either instrumental delivery or CS. Ended up delivering with ventouse. Poor lo was whisked away from me immediately as he wasn't crying. Turned out he had pneumothorax and was in intensive care for 3 days. Also he suffered fractured clavicle on delivery.

We were in hospital for 6 days but are now home and Alexander is doing well - except that he seems to hate his moses basket and has gone from angel baby in hospital to one who needs held constantly. I'm hoping he's just adjusting and that this will settle!! I will be avidly reading the posts for advice.

On the positive front, we have just tried his hug-a-bub sling and he loves it!

pleasechange · 10/07/2008 18:04

ktpie sympathies on the stitches, sounds painful! I had an episiotomy with stitches (my worst nightmare). It's still v uncomfortable and I'm still waddling a bit. I literally feel like everything down there is held together by a thin thread!

spongebrainbigpants · 10/07/2008 18:11

allnew, congrats on the birth of Alexander (fab name btw!) - sorry to hear that he ended up in ITU but glad he's home and well.

Sympathy on the stitches too - I gave birth to my Alex nearly 4 weeks ago and I'm still having problems with them .

Hi all - will be seeing you on the postnatal thread now?

Awful day. Took Iestyn to the cranial osteopath, and he started to scream on arrival and screamed throughout. And then carried on screaming - DH came home from work at 4pm because I was also wailing and considering how to end my life... I just can't cope with the screaming, and I feel quite alone. Just had a 2 hour sleep though and now I'm no longer suicidal. I really don't cope with sleep deprivation, it seems . I'm also rubbish with babies.
needahand - so osteopathy worked for you? (Or SJ rather!) And I'm as bad as you are - presentation next week, job interview the week after. But I'm now seriously worried about how I'll manage if I have a day like today.

Who knows - maybe the afternoon screaming was a result of the osteopathy, and he'll sleep well after 8??

hedgehog1979 · 10/07/2008 19:41

evening all, congrats to everyone else who has popped since my last post.

just sitting here feeding my monster and wondering whether I should be calling a bf counsellor as I have pain in my left nipple when feeding and when not feeding. don@t think it is latch issues as i have been taking him off if i know he is not on correctly. does anyone have any ideas?

ohh crap he has just thrown up the feed down me - oh well part of life with a baby i suppose!!!

josey · 10/07/2008 21:24

Allnew congrats, just wanted to quickly post to you and suggest that it could be the noise and the lights, babies get used to the conditions in ITU very quickly, DD sleeps like a log during the day when there is noise and lights. When its quite and dark she is unsettled.

debinaustria · 10/07/2008 21:37

Essie - so sorry to hear you had such a crap day, if it makes you feel any better I was crying last night too and not just with the pain in my breast. When a baby screams and screams it is soul destroying especially when you're sleep deprived. Have you spoken to anyone irl about how you're feeling?

I remember a time when Tristan was only a few weeks old and Stefan was 2 , Tristan was constantly screaming and Stefan was being a 2 year old, so I put each in their own room and sat and cried on the landing for 10 minutes or so - made me feel so much better.

With Stefan I didn't know anyone in the area with babies so I went to a parent/toddler group from early on and it helped, but I know they can be a bit daunting.

You may not see the effect of the osteopath straight away , but I have faith in them. I wish I had taken Tristan to one as he cried and cried and cried, and now I don;'t know if you remember 6 years on and his speech therapist/osteopath said his speech, digestion and sleeping would have benefitted from seeing a cranial osteopath in those early weeks.

Will also put this on antenatal so you see it.

thegreenfairy · 10/07/2008 22:27

allnew great to hear your news. Re moses basket and not sleeping, it may just be he's 'waking up' - Storm slept easily for about a week and then started to hate her basket.

Our solution was to put her in a drop side cot next to our bed, so she's on the same level on us and can see us - so she thinks she's in our bed when she's not - seems to do the trick most of the time, and she sleeps better when we're not there as well. Worth a try?

Right, time for her early night feed. Well done to all the new arrivals - laura and whinegums well done!

alipalli · 10/07/2008 22:30

Finally after 3 1/2 weeks I feel like posting my birth story. This must be some kind of catharsis.

This could be long, but will try to keep it brief!

Thurs: sweep, 1 cm dilated, nothing happens
Sun am (40+14): to hospital for induction in the morning. Delivery suite busy, so we wait until 3.30pm for prostaglandin pessary.
Mon midnight: period type pains turn into contrations
1.30am MW gives me paracetemol and codeine for the pain. Completely ineffective.
3am violently sick then hooked up to EFM, gas and air and TENS
5am. 4cm dilated, moved to delivery suite
5.30am DH called in from home. More EFM, G&A, TENS.
9am. been awake for over 24 hours, so given pethidine, get some fitfull weird sleep between contractions. Start on syntocin, dosage gets double every half hour (ouch)
2.30pm contractions making me vomit so go for epidural, a good idea as suddenly feel like me again, and discover that the grim hospital sandwich that the fierce midwife has been bullying me to eat for over an hour is now delicious.
2.30pm - 9pm continue with contractions, dilating very slowly. MW starts to get concerned about baby's position. Registrar called, some rather unreassuring debate between them about what position the head is in.
9pm - 10cm dilated - hurrah! Make me wait for an hour to get the head as far down as possible. General MW concern about baby's position, heart beat etc. DH getting anxious, but strangely I am quite chilled out about the whole thing.
10pm - midnight. 2 hours of pushing, with no sensation because of repeated epidural top ups. No progress, despite words of encouragement from all around me.
Tues midnight - taken to theatre for an attempted ventouse delivery. Also sign the consent forms for a c-section. In theatre upon examination they find meconium, so they switch to emergency c-section. I was very relieved at this point as I was convinced after 2 hours of sensationless pushing that a bit of suction wasn't going to make any difference. Bizarre experiece of having lady garden shaved surrounded by 10 people, and really not giving a hoot about the whole thing or that I never made it to my waxing appointment.
12.33am Peter Bryce arrived weighing in at 9lb 13oz. Upon being handed to DH, DH started to complain about how big and heavy he was and that he was making his arms ache!

On paper that all sounds pretty dreadful, but I really rated the care I got, and I never felt frightened by what was happening. My only wish is that I could have gone straight for the c-section 24 hours earlier although the MWs seemed to think that it was some kind of achievement to have got to 10cm dilated

LauraT · 11/07/2008 09:29

congrats allnew sounds like a stressful few days though, you sound very calm with all your events though, glad that Alexander is doing well now!

Whinegums would be great to meet up soon - perhaps our promised cinema trip? although my DH may send a letter of warning to your wee boy to get no ideas about Charlotte - he's worried about teenage years already!

Alipalli good story, at your DH's complaints - hope he had his tongue in his cheek at the time!

UDC was odd to be a service user but they were very good at both respecting a bit of professional courtesy (there were no evil midwives trying to influence analgesia decisions etc., and gave us choices all the way through) while still treating us as any patient should be treated, also as a perk, they moved me to a single room from a 5 bed one when I arrived for induction when they realised we were doctors (hoorah)

Oh, and the other lady from my AN group who was in for induction had a 59cm long 10lb 14oz baby girl the following day, which made my little 8lb sound an awful lot smaller! ouch!
