Lets hope it's not too long before everyone is hatched and milking season is in full swing!

Congratulations, Laura, lovely name and, like libralady says great birth date too!

josey · 08/07/2008 21:57

Congrats Laura

Looney what a very weird friend I think I would be avoiding her like the plague!!

LL re oil I use grapeseed oil for massage and it was given to me by the HV it was also what I was told to use for DD1

Olivia was at the community lead developement team today, her consultant was quite pleased with her, she was also quite suprised at the amount she is able to do, from when she was in Hospital/Her discharge report. Im quite please at how possitive she was as I have been told by others she can be annoyingly negative. We are able to spread her feeds now so we can drop the 4am, DH will beaway back to work next week so life will be a bit better for me. She is starting to make a few crying sounds which are sweet, what I wouldnt give for a full blown hour of screaming

I cant believe she is 5 weeks old tomorrow.

Love to everyone else xx

alipalli · 08/07/2008 22:09

Well done Laura looking forward to hearing more when you feel up to it. Lovely name too.

Congratulations Mr Essie, does this mean less time in London and more time together in Wales? You had me wondering what you were celebrating though, didn't think that anyone on this thread could be pregnant again already!

A good day. We had a physio appointment to check out one of his feet which was a bit turned in at birth. They seem happy with it though and don't need to see him again. We just need to keep tickling his foot to strengthen up the weak side. The nice physio also tried to check his hips as the GP hadn't been able to as Peter had stropped a bit about it last time. Needless to say Peter stropped again and wee-ed and poo-ed too, the shame! Peter seems to have embraced sleep today which is a bit weird, as so far he has only slept at night for any amount of time. Have a horrible feeling I might pay the price tonight...but can't bring myself to wake a sleeping baby.

DH has had 2 days holiday and has made a video of Peter that we have posted here DH was up till 2am editing it last night (spot the member of the family not involved in BF!)

congrats Laura, Charlotte is a lovely name.

And happy celebrations Essie. And alipalli - I can't imagine celebrating being pregnant right now! Fortunately there's no chance for me....

debinaustria · 09/07/2008 09:09

Congratulations Laura on the safe arrival of Charlotte, I bet you can't believe she's here at last?

makecakesnotwar · 09/07/2008 09:26

Congratulations Mr Essie- will keep schtum. DH a barrister so I got him to tell me what a Recorder was (I kept thinking musical instrument...). I'm v. impressed.

Congrats to LauraT also- lovely lovely name.

I'm having a mare- woke up yesterday bleeding. Cecily threw up all over me and then I found we had no hot water. Rang round the houses to speak with a Health Visitor (mine is on holiday) then was kept waiting at Dr, who was running half an hour late. Seems one of my stitches is still embedded and now I have an infection. Didn't have time to pick up prescription as the plumber was waiting at my house. He found problem after problem but got the water going at least so I was able to soak in the bath last night. He's back today to 'drain the system' then I have to dash out to get my antibiotics. Oh, and Health Visitor worried about Cecily because she is only putting on 1/2lb every two weeks (but she is feeding until milk drools out of her mouth, going from 11-4.30 during the night and not screaming for food all day. What am I not doing???)....this is the one who said she didnt have colic, just a bda temper.

Sorry for the rant- I'm having a crap couple of days.

Upsidedowncake · 09/07/2008 09:47

Morning everyone

Congratulations Laura. Charlotte is a lovely name. Glad the experience was positive.

And congratulations Mr Essie. Brilliant that you guys will be together in Wales!

Makecakes, mad health visitors. They can really make you feel so miserable, and quite often, it's just their opinion. This time round, I'm finding health professionals much less judgemental and interfering than they used to be - but I'm sorry that you are not.

Josey, it sounds like you are doing amazingly well with Olivia. Yahboohsucks to all the people who said she couldn't do this, that and the other.

poppy34 · 09/07/2008 10:12

looney your friend sounds like a looney..I'd have slapped her.

re health visitors, am spectacularly un impressed with mine - apart from fact her muffin top was roughly same size as mine which made me feel better .. didn't think she was much use and in some case her advice contradicted midwife (who given she is 62 prob knows what she is talking about). Plus the hv centre here is a turn up system so she warned me to turn up early wiht changing stuff etc as could be hours to wait ... WTF!! I don't mind a little wait but I'm buggered if I'm hanging around for up to 3 hours to see a health visitor...

ok tip time.. edie being very good but getting quite clingy (esp at night..having real trouble settling her after 6pm feed before night feed).. basically only mum will do which is lovely. Any tips on how to deal with this ? I know its natural to be clingy (she is 2 weeks tomorrow) but its quite hard to do anything... Was thinking about a sling (she is too small for baby bjorn).. but any other advice on trying to balance cuddling her and not getting her into habit of only being settled by me much appreciated!

big congrats to laura and like name. Plus para in awe of the amazing growing fleur

goingfor3 · 09/07/2008 11:12

Congrats Laura. Looney agree with everyone else your 'friend' is a looney!

Really glad to hear veryone is so happy with Olivias progress Josey. makecakesnotwar DD2 put on between 3 - 5 ozs per week so about the same as your baby and the HV wasn't impressed. She told to to top up with formula and see the GP. I didn't top up with formula but did see the gp who told me to trust my instincts and if I felt she was developing well then she probably was. She carried on with the smae weight gain and is now a very healthy four year old.

DS finally pooed yesterday, it certainly looked like 8 days worth! I'm sure he's 1/2 lb lighter now!!!

thegreenfairy · 09/07/2008 12:00

JUST POSTED THIS ON THE BF FORUM - CAN YOU GUYS HELP?

I am BF my 5 week old baby and she is putting on a good amount of weight.

However, she has an increasing tendency to posset quite a lot when I am changing her nappy, even with a pillow under her head and then gets hiccups really badly, which upsets her after a few minutes - left alone they can go on for half an hour, by which time she is losing the plot.

The only thing which seems to end the hiccups is letting her suckle - she won't take a dummy when she's got them.

So she takes in more milk, eventually needs a change, and then we're back to square one.
And by the time she's 'topped up' it's almost time for her next feed, so she doesn't sleep, then gets overtired, and crotchety by the end of the day.

Anyone got any hiccup cure suggestions? I sometimes wait half an hour after a feed before changing her and it still happens - I'm at my wits end!

aberdeenhiker · 09/07/2008 12:14

greenfairy - F gets very upset by his hiccups too and has them about 30 minutes after his feeds no matter what we do. He doesn't want to suckle though - he's not a comfort-feeder - so we've just been putting up with it. Let me know if you get any good tips!

And I meant to say - does anyone have a copy of the article about breastmilk and booze? Essie, do you have an online subscription? It's The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism. I'd like to know if it's a transient effect (ie I could have a drink after I put Fraser down as he just snacks at night anyways, or if there's a cumulative reduction in milk.... If anyone can get a hold of the pdf it'd be really interesting...

thegreenfairy · 09/07/2008 12:19

sponge your MIL sounds like a nightmare - when my DM took Storm from DH without asking first in a v similar way it made me so cross! But I made it pretty clear it wasn't acceptable - easier when it's your own mum I guess - can your DH have a word?

laura congrats! And impressed by the 6/7/8 stuff - how cool!

Storm now asleep after latest hiccuping extravaganza. Knackered!

debinaustria · 09/07/2008 12:54

TGF - not sure what to suggest re the hiccups, sorry.

Makecakes - I would ignore the HV if you feel that Cecily is OK. Hope your antibiotics sort you out soon.

Josey - well done for all your hard work with Olivia, she's such a fighter.

Poppy - Ethan doesn't settle that well in the evening either, I haven't managed to get him in the cot before we go to bed yet. Sorry - no advice on any subject forthcoming today.

Last night we went to bed at 11.30( I know - too late), E went in his cot, then woke at 12.30 for a feed - that was a killer after 1 hours sleep, then 3.30, 4.30, 5.30 AARGH, by 5.30 I had to have him in the bed where he grunted and groaned until it was time to get up. He must have had tummy ache as he was very windy.Spots are even worse today, I've warned the Bride of her spotty nephew!!

Lorettah · 09/07/2008 13:20

Hello!

Seems like ages ago I posted on here. Harry has been keeping extremely busy and my broadband went down the other week!

With hiccups I tend to hold Harry on my shoulder and rub his back - that seems to help him or at least sooth him.

I think Harry has night time & day time mixed up at the moment, he's good as gold during the day but at night he's suddenly awake & fussing!!!

Re wind I give Harry Infacol and it's a life-saver he's much more windy - although mainly from the bottom - typical man I think. It has really helped him, most feeds I get 3 - 4 burps and occasionaly I don't get burps but farts!

hedgehog1979 · 09/07/2008 13:26

deb must be something in the air as Isaac was the same last night. DH kept prodding me. I dare not put him in bed with us though as DH is a very sound sleeper and also fidgets a lot.

I had the shock of my life this morning - picked up what I thought were my post preg jeans (bought a size bigger) but actually are a pair of jeans I bought the weekend I concieved and they are slightly too big, so in two weeks I have lost my baby weight, although my belly wobbles spectacularly, Isaac has put on an ounce a day and I have a lovely health visitor who is going to keep visiting me at home due to maternal mental health issues

TGF Isaac also hiccups spectacularly and appears to fart at the same time. Guess he takes after his father there. It doesn't seem to bother him and he will feed when he is hiccuping. If he is not hungry the look of shock on his face is incredible.

Josey so pleased for you and Olivia

Poppy remember 2 weeks is very young, I know Isaac is my first but he only settles on me, when I pass him to DH he will only settle with his grubby finger in his mouth.

I am off to see the practice nurse this afternoon as the earliest I can get a GP appointment is next Tuesday!!! and the iron tablets are playing havoc with my bowels. Have walked to the bank this morning and came back with spectacularly wet feet, jeans and, although wearing very expensive waterproof coat, arms. Made me very jealous of Isaac wrapped up and in the pram.

Right must go locate car keys, see if changing bag has dried and find dry shoes and socks!!!

Essie3 · 09/07/2008 13:49

TGF Iestyn hiccups too, and they often turn to sick ups as well. Given that most things (moving, lying still, sleeping, winding, feeding) turn to minor sick ups (possets really) then I ignore them. It happened in hospital and I was worried, but the (disinterested) nurse said 'oh, he's growing. Put him on the breast if you want him to stop hiccuping.' Fab...

Debs - I'm having the same trouble with Iestyn and settling. It's never before 11.30 these days, but we're off to see a cranial osteopath tomorrow.

V. fast typing - signs of distress and a loud poo just happened! I was all because of the rain but he's been good as gold. Can sense my distress, clearly! Back in a mo...

Rolf · 09/07/2008 14:04

Well done Laura. Lovely names and I'm glad you had a good experience.

TGF - don't have any advice about hiccups, sorry.

Poppy I think whilst they are so young to be unsettled and clingy in the evening is just par for the course. At more settled times of the day I think it's a good idea to encourage her to sleep on her own, rather than on you - and if she's feeling comfortable it's likely to work. In the evening all that can go out of the window if she's distressed and uncomfotable. I've never found slings very useful for that time of day as there's too much leaning forwards (over the sink/cooker etc) but it might work for you. I tend to find myself doing things 1-handed or not at all.

Makecakes Agree that if you are happy wiht your baby's weight gain/feeding/progress then ignore the charts and hvs. Sorry you're feeling so crap. Hope your infection clears up soon.

Josey v pleased Olivia continues to make such good progress .

THanks Libralady. I'm still nortified and although I can find plenty of excuses the reality is that my language leaves a lot to be desired and is one of the (many) things that I am trying to work on. It's a real wake-up call to hear how ugly it sounds coming from my lovely daughter. Once you've got into the habit of using bad language it's very difficult to change it - like being rude to people. (now I sound like an out of control nutter with Tourettes don't I!).

Essie - I don't know your DH's name (unless it's the same as yours - don't know why but I assumed it wasn't) so he has nothing to worry about! But I'll keep quiet anyway . It's lovely news.

Essie3 · 09/07/2008 16:46

Yeah, rolf, entirely correct - he has a different name to me. Quite distinctive as well. But it's been confirmed officially now so it's no longer a secret!
And Makecakes - I thought a recorder was like a secretary in court and a bit of a step down...

Aberdeen no, no subscription! I'm a legal historian! But would be interested in reading the article too. I'm quite suspicious about booze and breastmilk now.

Just a quick moan. It's very minor really. I went down to meet a friend at a baby cafe event this morning, which was just great. But it's raining really heavily, and I got soaked, and didn't eat until 1.45 and got really depressed about coping. It's so silly, because it was only because I was wet and hungry, and luckily Iestyn managed to keep sleeping until I'd eaten (and then kicked off...) but I seem to go to pieces at the tiniest thing. I'm just so tired...

Essie3 · 09/07/2008 16:49

makescakes all my sympathy on your bad day. Iestyn was coming up to 2 weeks old when our boiler packed in, and he projectile vomited (at midnight) over me, soaking my pjs, nursing bra and knickers, and getting the duvet and also the fitted sheet. (Unbelievable actually for a creature only half a metre in length...). Couldn't really wash with cold water so used baby wipes. And how did I cope? I curled up in a foetal position on the landing and wailed like a madwoman. DH came close to smacking me, I can tell you!

poppy34 · 09/07/2008 16:57

hi guys - thanks for tips... suspected it was just a phase as she is so young but wanted to know if I was right in my hunch. rolf thanks for tips.. she is pretty good at sleeping in cot etc if she is feeling chilled.. but not if she isn't !!

deb sorry to hear about your disturbed night.. hope ethan better tonight.

not stupid at all to feel like that essie - its been raining so hard that I've not ventured out at all and feel like a prisoner.. really thought got over the not coping thing but being stuck here does make you feel a bit stir crazy.

still on the plus side I did actually manage half an hour nap today .. and finally got to express after trying about 4 times since 9am about half an hour ago...now taking advantage to hunt for breast feeding tops online.... I am feeling quite brazen re feeding in public but sight of my pot belly is prob a bit much
at hedgehogfor losing weight so quickly.
have I misssed something or has bdq popped?

Upsidedowncake · 09/07/2008 17:35

Very briefly, to those on iron and constipated, may I recommend FYBOGEL. It comes in little sachets which you mix with water, and makes the most amazing difference. You take it twice a day morning and evening.

Rolf · 09/07/2008 17:35

I wear a belly band under my trousers to prevent anyone catching sight of my belly . Very jealous of Hedgehog's weight loss, too. I haven't weighed myself but am still in such a happy haze that I am convinced I am scrumptious!

I have weepy days/moments too - demented hormones I guess. I got really weepy the other day about how I'll probably never have another baby . The best advice anyone gave me was to stop thinking about it as I'm in no condition to be making decisions one way or the other.

I was wondering about UDC too. Just a few more left now!
