Hello, Haven't posted for a while as haven't had much to say. Baby continues to kick day and night. Luckily haven't been suffering from sickness. In fact, all is going smoothly and can even forget I'm pregnant from time to time (get a bit of a shock when I see my belly though!).

I thought I'd post though for those who are concerned about pre-eclampsia. I've just seen this article on the bbc website news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/4408325.stm . I thought it might be of interest.

Hub2dee, as to your query on why I didn't want to know my main reason is that I don't get many suprises in life, so I quite like the idea of this being one. I love suprises. Also, I'm scared that if they tell me its going to be one, it might end up being the other. This happened to a friends cousin.

I'm also starting to get concerned about how dd will react to the new baby. She's 2 and a half at the moment. Whenever we talk about it with her she insists that its going to be a brotehr baby. If it can't be a brother baby, she would prefer a rabbit to a sister baby. We keep reading books to her about the new baby. Can't get much excitement from her though. I think the new baby giving her a present tip might be used by us.

Hello all,

Well just caught up with all the goss, glad to see you all doing well. Decorated the box room with Winnie the Pooh paper at the weekend, it just looks sooooo sweet!

How organised are you guys? at what week are you supposed to have the hospital bag ready? I am soooo excited just want to get everything sorted and I am only 25 weeks, think my bro being born at 26 weeks might have something to do with it he he he.

Well let me know if anyone is ultra organised, and anything essential to put in the bag! I am soooo new to all this

hub2dee · 04/04/2005 14:37

at Lolasmum's cousin. !!!

Hope we're OK with our 99.9% girl advice - as I've given up on boys names and my ma just bought us some girly outfits !!!

It would still be great fun if bean came out a boy.

I would have thought giving birth to something the size of a football would have been enough of a surprise in itself, Lolasmum

So glad it's not my job !

BTW, will dw's pre-eclampsia get better if I take the viagra ?

Bagpuss30 · 04/04/2005 16:54

OMG please don't talk about preparing everything for the new arrivals - our promise to sort out our spare room seriously failed this weekend and I am now beginning to panic!

BabyDot, I will have a think about the hospital bag and see if I can remember what we did last time - the first time we took in all sorts of things that ended up being useless. Usually your hospital provide a list which is always a good starting point.

Glad everyone is doing OK.

Pamina! Thanks sooooo much, a lady of experience just what I needed to hear!

Thanks you have really put my mind at rest, bless your heart for taking the time to write all that.

Well just printed to list he he he, thanks!

Eulalia · 05/04/2005 15:15

For those having their 2nd child and if the first one is still in nappies pack a couple of nappies for the older child. I packed a huge bag for for ds who was 2.9 when dd was born and of course dh forgets to take it out with him. He also puts ds's nappy on incorrectly so it slips off and leaks then he visits us in hospital with a very soggy child and nothing to change him into. Alternatively just pack loads of bags for your other child and leave it where that child will be ie at grandparents/friends house and leave one in your car too.

I had this naive image of my parents and dh collaborating nicely together and handing over said bag between them which of course just didn't happen.

Eulalia · 05/04/2005 15:17

Pack another bag inside your labour bag for taking home all the stuff you accumulate while in hospital - presents, free packs etc.

Can't believe I am thinking about this already!

Blimey, everyone's beaten me to it again!

Right, just looked up what my hospital suggests. Some of this might be obvious and/or repeated so apologies.

Own supply of sanitory towels, nappies, cotton wool.

T-Shirt or nightie for labour
sippers
dressing gown
nightie/pjs for after
breastfeeding bras
breast pads
bath and hand towels (old ones are best)
toiletries (I bought a second set to have ready in my bag rather than rely on myself remembering to go to the bathroom and pack stuff whilst in labour!)
disposable pants
plastic bags for taking laundry home (? didn't bother with this I think)
change for telephone/list of telephone numbers
pen/birth announcement cards

From what I remember I packed a bag for labour and a bag for the stay afterwards. My labour bag had things like glucose tablets and bottled water in and a nice labour kit that someone had given me from Little Green Earthlets. I also put in a newborn babygrow/vest and a 0-3 month one so that baby had something that fitted dependant on size!

For going home I got a maternity outfit ready and put it on a hanger on the front of our wardrobe - nice and obvious for dh . I packed hat/babygrow/cardi and shawl (though not sure why you need this in the summer) in my main bag beforehand so dh didn't have to dither over that one. Put the car seat somewhere easy to spot (middle of the nursery so dh/p trips over it is good) so that they don't forget that too otherwise the hospital won't let you take the baby home.

Pampers care mats are also handy to both change baby on in hospital and also to have at home for when you are in bed.

Pamina, are the arnica tablets any good? I have never used them but my Earthlets labour kit had some lovely bath salts in them which were excellent at helping to heal last time and I'll do anything to speed that process up again!

Hub2dee - sorry just seen your message from friday, not me who just had a break, so you either have wrong name or there is another name with an extra M in it (pinkmamMa). Just didnt want you to think I was rude and ignoring you!

hub2dee · 05/04/2005 21:24

Hi pink, Yes, I think I am very confused with the pastel ladies and double Ms... sorry... hope you're well.

Lolasmum · 06/04/2005 08:44

I took arnica tablets and I think they really helped me as I was up and about really quickly all things considered....

Can't think of anything else to pack apart from mobile phone. I was alowed to use mine in the hospital I had dd in so I was able to text friends with the news.

Take lots of magazines too, just in case you're kept in longer than expected afterwards (or want to be kept in longer due to "I've got a baby what do I do with it" panic)

I don't think I packed until 37 weeks.

hoxtonchick · 06/04/2005 08:46

my mum gave me my labour bag for christmas last time (ds was born at the end of january so i was about 34 weeks) - it was so sweet of her. and all came in a v nice leather holdall that we still have. however, it means i have no idea what was in it....

pinkmama · 06/04/2005 08:58

Hello HC, think that was a lovely thought of your mum.

With my 2nd pg hadnt finished packing my bag at 38 weeks as dd was born at 42 weeks and had just assumed I would go over. Needless to say it was a bit of a rush when ds decided to make an early appearance! Mind you he was in such a rush to get out i didnt use most of the stuff I had packed!

Eulalia · 06/04/2005 09:41

Don't this has been mentioned - a portable CD player for relaxing music while you labour

hoxtonchick · 06/04/2005 09:47

there was a radio in our delivery room. dp & i are both r4 addicts so had it on all the time. think the midwife was a bit nonplussed!

Bagpuss30 · 06/04/2005 09:48

Oh, yes, good point Eulalia. I'm currently trying to persuade dh that an iPod Shuffle would be perfect for this purpose . Anything's got to be better than the midwife sticking the tv in the corner on and just leaving me like last time - her choice was perfect too (not) - mission impossible - that music still makes me shudder nearly three years later......

new member!
I have only just come across mumsnet so hello everyone and hope you're all feeling good.
I am a first time mum-to-be from London, married, working in marketing for a wine company (yes, surrounded by wine all day long... no fun!) and finding it really hard work when all I want to do is sleep after lunch!
I am the first one of my group of friends to get pregnant, so am always on the lookout for good advice!
Harriett. (25 weeks)

hub2dee · 06/04/2005 15:36

Hi Harriett, welcome to our humble thread. dw is due end July / beg. August, 1st time our end too, also London. Royal Free Hospital or another part of town ?

Bagpuss30 · 06/04/2005 15:47

Welcome Harriett . I'm in Cheshire so no where near you I'm afraid. I'm due with baby number 3 at the beginning of July (must be mad - lol).

Hub, just been reading your buggy thread - I saw two people with MBs in John Lewis yesterday and both were terrain. One had the zip seat and looked odd with small baby in it if that helps you in your decision . Also, you have no idea how your bag thread has affected me this week - still pondering skip hop but wondering if that will be a waste of money as its so expensive .

hub2dee · 06/04/2005 16:17

Hi Bagpuss - are you au fait with the two (yawn) types of seating on the Terrain ? We (I) am trying to decide between 'zip hammock' and 'recline' with or without carrycot... Hope to use some kind of sling, so trying to figure out if carrycot = great or carrycot = unnecessary given 162 degree incline of Terrain seats...

(sorry to buggyise this thread everybody).

Harriett · 06/04/2005 16:28

Hi and thanks for the warm welcome! in response to hub2dee I am booked into the lovely Homerton Hospital- I actually ended up in the delivery suite last weekend after falling through a floorboard (I am not that fat...yet... it was already broken!!!) and bruised my ribs on landing- so was rushed in fearing the worst- I can't believe how precious I have become! anyway, everything is fine and we were very impressed by the midwives and doctors, so my 'trial run' wasn't a total waste of time!
onto your buggy thread- I am choosing mine tonight- it's so difficult! I will probably end up with something totally unsuitable as I will probably just be swayed by fancy accessories...
