morning ladies

insomnia got me again - i've been up for hours but i am about to go back to bed to rub my belly and chat to the girl (i know, what a sap!).

still furiously list-making and planning but also doing lots of indulgent things too. yesterday had pedicure and eyebrow at the beauty school here (totally cheap and very good job they did too!), then acupuncture, then lunch on my own in a cafe, then pregnancy yoga class. i figure i might as well make the most of the last me time probably ever!
in between i am finishing up all my freelance writing (ads, websites, press releases) which is just soooooo dull right now . . .i want to be just bored and pottering around.

sweet kitty and other birth veterans - you're soldiers! its good to hear all the stories for first timers . . . i am keeping an open mind as to everything but i must admit that although i think doctors over-medicate in general, i seem to have a lot of trust in the hospital system here (right now). maybe i don't have enough faith in my own body or something but i am nervous of the whole natural childbirth at home thing.

has anyone seen the Ricki Lake documentary yet? would be very interested to see it and be more informed of the debate.

love all the birth plans/wish lists. must do mine

re. the nesting, i am also lacking the instinct, jules and I always thought that pregnant women shouldn't paint (fumes etc) - how naive (and convenient) of me
i got someone to do the nursery (also in cream pigley) so its ready now but the rest of the flat is white and in pretty good nick. my massive spring clean list is almost all crossed off, thanks to a blitz with me and the cleaner working in tandem, washing skirting boards, cleaning out cupboards and bleaching the hell out of everything. i have never seen my place so clean! (its one of those cobwebby, shabby, high-ceiling places with a scary school-type toilet and the most basic kitchen in the world)

next thing to do is recover the dining chairs. got the fabric and a (manual) staple gun but have never done it before and am not a very crafty person. wish me luck!

disneystar · 28/05/2008 08:12

minnie 1
i cant shave my legs no more totally impossible
my DH does it for me with my electric one then gives my legs a massage with body cream and my feet he does to
i think thats quite aweet really it certainly helps me and very relaxing to

this is prob a very silly question here but im booked in for a section and im in the process of packing my bag today
im going to have 1 as my emergency bag incase it happens before my date a ive had 2 at 35 weeks
but my other one the question is the blood loss
i can imagine you guys laughing at this
do you still bleed after a section ?
what happens to it?
i cant beleive i dont know

CilC · 28/05/2008 08:42

Hi disneystar, we only have 6 and 3/4 weeks left! The 14th is Bastille Day - I mentioned a french name but DH laughed!
I had wrongly assumed that because I was having c-section (last time) I would not bleed as much. I was wrong! I have packed 3 bags of maternity pads! Once the catheter comes out you can use these. It took a few hours to start and was more prevalent a few days later.
My actual c section was covered and bandaged initially so I did not need anything for that.
My DH used to be a pharmacist and he insisted on over seeing the first clean/wash of c section. He carefully monitored that they washed their hands, used gloves and insisted that they use extra betadine, which we supplied. To be honest he was quite forceful about cleanliness...which is fair enough I say!

Mummywannabe · 28/05/2008 08:54

Morning all

Minkus - that could be my birth plan more or less.

Rumpel - was me studying, am still going have 3 more essays and an exam before Oct, gonna get on and do the essays next week so all i have to do once little one arrives is revise (all i have to do ). Guess we will see but so close to finishing this part don't wanna give in!

Pigley - amazed at your painting, i tried to help DH do the bathroom last week but couldn't manouvere (Sp?) myself in the tight space so had a girly hissy fit and sulked!

I've put on nearly 2 stone but weirdly not any in last 2-3 weeks although belly had grown?? Going to ask midwife about it today. Also gotta get a defintive answer on this low platelet thingy - think it was isaidno that had the same, have you had any more advice. Had mine rechecked and they are a little lower but not much.

gillythekid · 28/05/2008 09:01

Mummy apparently weight gain slows right down or stops in the last few weeks, some women even lose weight (please let that be me!) The baba begins to take from your fat reserves, which is sooo kind, don't you think?
I'm off to Ikea again today, to get all the stuff they didn't have last time. I lazed around yesterday and did bugger all and was so bored, I nearly melted into the sofa. I need to find a balance.

Mummywannabe · 28/05/2008 09:09

Gilly - i wondered if that might be it, think i rememeber reading something about it somewhere now you said that. Little one can have my fat reserves i'm not worried, there is plenty!!

pigleychez · 28/05/2008 09:13

morning all!

Well the painting day yesterday ended in tears!
DH moved the huge 4 door wardrobe last night so i can do the last wall today but moving it was HARD work and it broke! oopps!
Few choice words from DH and lots of tears from me!
Typical of me... think im doing something nice and helpful that ends up causing more hassle! Should just do nothing!

Now we need new bedroom furniture ASAP as all our clothes are thrown (literally.. from the hassle last night) into the Nursery.
Off to Ikea tomorrow night now to try and get a replacement.

disneystar · 28/05/2008 09:40

about the weight loss i have lost half a stone in the last 2 weeks im just not hungry really and when i sit down to eat he moves so much it makes me feel sick now
going to be interesting how much he weighs at next scan i think
im another one with enough fat reserves he can have them willingly

Mummywannabe · 28/05/2008 09:52

oh pigley - never mind new furniture will make you feel better! Hormones eh? You should have seen me when i couldn't get the black out blind to fit!

Libra1975 · 28/05/2008 09:54

Shall we all have a meet up in Ikea as my DH is on a misson there tomorrow for a new wardrobe as well (I didn't break ours we just don't have one yet, I did manage to break one of our banister railings whilst hauling my large bulk upstairs yesterday however)

GIlly/Mummywannabe - I am desperately hoping you are right but I thought you were suppose to be put on a pound a week in the last few weeks? I also had my first stretchmark sighting yesterday

Loving all the birthplans and fantasy births and it is very helpful to hear tips from those who have been there, done that.
Along with my hospital bag mine still isn't done. It is suppose to involve hypnobirthing and birthpool, but right now I am so tired and just meh (very late night due to train problems from London) I just want an epidural from the word go.

Kaz1967 - wow that is a change of career! Must be nice however to try something new. pre uni course psychology must be fascinating - what can you tell about us all from what we write ;)

Minkus - hope your hg isn't coming back, that must have been horrible hugs

Pigleychez - very jealous of your painting I would love to have the get up and go to paint our house. If you run out of things to paint you could borrow some of our walls! I will babysit!

Pennyrose - my SPD is getting worse, almost constant now but still able to get around, however all those who are suffering please please take it as easily as possible as as much as it should go post birth a friend of mine is still having problems with it 3 years later which may not have occurred if she had just slowed down (sorry I know it is easier to say slow down than do, especially if you already have children to look after)

CilC - when you off? Have a fantastic time!

ohh I know Peanut and her DH are probably busy keeping their LO company in hospital but I would LOVE to see a photo when they have a spare 5 minutes (about when there LO is 18 years old then!!)

Had fantastic day yesterday, met MIL in John Lewis is town and she bought us some lovely bed linen for the LO and a gorgeous Winnie the poo cot bumper. Then went for supper and the theatre.

Just answered the door to postman hoping it was my lovey new pushchair only to find it was ANOTHER pair of shoes for "Imelda" aka DH. I swear he has more shoes than any girl I know.

Today I am making quick apricot, apple and pecan loaf for my hypnobirthing class tonight and trying to book a clarins pregnancy thingy for tomorrow (whilst DH is struggling around IKEA ) and trying to keep up on here so I don't have so much to catch up with!

Heffa · 28/05/2008 10:00

Pigley - good luck with the new furniture!

Our bugaboo arrived last night so DH assembled it and we've had a play. I need more practise though!

Nursery wardrobe is being delivered today so I can't go out, which is annoying because I really want to go swimming to try and relax a bit.

Kaz1967 · 28/05/2008 10:10

Libra1975 was shattered and did not put in punctuation I intend to do zoology at uni. I am at college at present doing a pre uni course over 2 years this hear I did psychology and the cope subjects maths and English. In the second year which will be delayed I am doing either combined science because they do not do chemistry where I am going) and applied maths ( boring). If I can do a chemistry or combined science A-level next year (to keep my brain active I must be mad) I want to do biology and environmental science because they are going to be far going to be far more interesting than applies maths

Libra1975 · 28/05/2008 10:30

lol, I wish I could blame shatteredness but no it's just laziness and a shockingingly bad knowledge of grammar and punctuation.

Minkus · 28/05/2008 10:44

Hello everyone

Minnie will look out for the dozol then, sounds useful. I would love to have a bath too but agree that the getting out bit is tricky.

Kitty thats such a good point about the head not engaging second time round, hadn't thought of that. With ds my waters broke before anything else happened at all so I was sort of presuming it would again but I do like to consider all eventualities! at your dh being ok with the gore but not the cord- my dh was fascinated too but the description he gave me afterwards I could have done without. He said my fanjo turned itself inside out around ds as he was born bleeeeurgh!)

TJuice am v of your lovely pampering day yesterday, Copenhagen sounds a great place to be.

Gilly I also did virtually nothing yesterday but I was not bored! It was great! Get your feet up again today my lovely we're not going to get the chance soon enough

Libra1975 and Pigley we need new wardrobes too- must be something about pregnancy that makes us want to organise our clothes even though we can't bloody well fit into most of them anymore.

Hurrah Heffa for having your new toy to play with! It's so exciting when you get them set up isn't it.

Booked in for eyebrow shape and eyelash tint for a couple of weeks time- did this last time and it meant that I didn't have to put mascara on when in hospital which is a godsend as there were lots of tears (happy hormonal ones!) and in the inevitable photographs, whilst I didn't look amazing at least it wasn't dreadful.

I don't think my hg is coming back, well I haven't been sick at all today so maybe yesterday was just a one off. I am feeling increasingly sick however, and def think that it's related to hormone surges as things have also been hotting up in my womb. Loads of BH's, getting quite painful and various other niggles and aches stop me in my tracks. Am 34+2 now, seeing midwife later today and might ask her what the likelihood of being early again this time is. Ds was only 8 days early but the thought of going 2 weeks over is horrific I can't cope with this for another 7 1/2 weeks I blimmin hate being pregnant this time, so ungrateful of me but it's been horrid

CilC · 28/05/2008 10:44

Heffa what do you think of the bugaboo? Is it easy to open/shut/lift? DH bought one when in US - he was supposed to get a Maclaren! I found Maclaren so easy to use, but am looking forward to having LO face me when we go for walks.

Libra we're off to Cornwall this Saturday. Your day yesterday sounded lovely... I wish I had my mum or MIL over here to do those sort of things with. Can't complain though as I have been receiving little parcels from them.

Oh poor you pigley - but just think, a very good excuse to buy a new wardrobe...which of course will require new clothes at some stage!

Wish my weight loss would begin...have been so stationary and overindulged with gifts of cakes/buns etc that it really is time to stop!

isaidno · 28/05/2008 10:46

mummywannabe - it is me with low platelets. they were 132 last time (normal minimum is 150)
I had another blood test yesterday to count them again.
IME they will just keep sending you for tests to keep an eye on it. My mw says they only worry if they are dangerously low - 60 or less. There is no treatment - only blood transfusion. I think it is just something they eed to be aware of in case you start to bleed alot at the birth.

Now I am going to do some ironing. Would rather go to Ikea but DH hates the place and I haven't broken any furniture yet.

gillythekid · 28/05/2008 10:55

I'm off to Ikea now and will be suspiciously eying any pregnant women to see if they are MNetters! isaidno can't you just break something as an excuse, just a little towel rail maybe?

CilC · 28/05/2008 11:40

LOL isaidno! Definitely try and break something...but not on your own body! I wish I could go to ikea....

Kaz1967 · 28/05/2008 11:59

Don't normally recommend birth and pregnancy books but last year I bought my sister in law a book because she was fretting about pregnancy things and it looked sensible an down to earth. I got it back last week and I am really impressed it maybe because H and I are similar in the fact we want info so we are in control it also appears to recognise we are all different and all have different wants and needs and that these may change.

It's called blooming birth by Lucy Atkins and Julia Guderian published by hapercollins
www.amazon.co.uk/Blooming-Birth-How-Pregnancy-Want/dp/0007184018

Heffa · 28/05/2008 13:07

CilC - I really like it so far! It was very easy to build. I still need practise folding it and so on, but it does seem quite straightforward. It's lovely to push, and it feels really light which is good. I can pick it up quite easily. Definitely quite keen on it!

minipinkscottish · 28/05/2008 14:18

OMG - rain -rain-rain!!!! OHHHHHHHHHHH and THUNDER

I've cleaned and hung new curtains and ironed and cooked - now what? Eat - eat -eat .....strangely though I want a Magnum but that would mean going out so maybe it'll be tea and chocolate cake mmmmmmmm xx

sweetkitty · 28/05/2008 14:30

TJuice - my advice for anyone going through it for the first time is keep an open mind, there are so many variables and every birth is different. I have one friend who wanted a natural waterbirth but despite being in labour for 3 days never got past 6cms she now has been told that she has a narrow pelvis and it was unlikely she could have a VB. I am so of your spring clean I keep seeing things I need to do but cannot get them done right now, I have started a list though for things that need to be done before the baby comes.

Mummywannabee - I am just over a stone and a half on the weight gain, still got told this morning I was neat! Don't feel very neat right now though.

Libra - I still haven't packed my hospital bag, my mission today was to order some feeding bras well two cheaper ones before I get my hotmilk one.

Minkus - hope the HG stays away for you too,you have certainly had enough of it this pregnancy. My DP is like that too loves telling everyone in great detail what the births have been like, his favourite bit is when DD2's head was out but the rest of her was still inside, he says it's the freakiest thing he has ever see (you had a head hanging out your fanjo and her eyes were open and she was looking at me!) still can't have put him off too much. DP always gets all emotional and very loving after I have had a baby aww.

Kaz - I studied Zoology in second year at uni and very nearly did my degree in it but there was too much worms and not enough mammals IYSWIM. Says the woman who studied bacteria!

Have started another thread about prams I still can't decided I am utterly hopeless, I have gone off the double and single idea and am back thinking about a P&T, have even measured DD2 to see if she will fit in it. Would love a bugaboo I persuaded my friend who has just had her baby to get one too. They should do one with a toddler seat.

sweetkitty · 28/05/2008 14:32

minipink - no thunder but tonnes of rain quite nice actually as we put loads of lawn feed and plant food in the garden so now it will get all washed in. Hope it doesn't last too long.

pigleychez · 28/05/2008 15:04

Miserable day here today. Rained all day

DH is meant to be playing cricket tonight after work but i thing the pitch might be abit water logged.
Was thinking if it cancelled we could go to Ikea tonight instead of tomorow but just remembered the footies on, so dont think that will hapen.

Finished painting the walls now and all the skirtings are done... Whole of upstairs looks like a bombs hit it! Stuff everywhere. Makes me realise just how many clothes and shoes i really do have!

Have a really sore side today (left side of bump) and can feel something boney sticking out right at that spot, feels very tender. Have the midwife tomorow afternoon so maybe she can point out what body part it is for me.
