Talking of good books - first time round I bought the rough guide to pregnancy which was really good, and blooming birth which was brilliant for making sure you were clued up on how to get what you wanted from antenatal care. Right, off to look at that 3 shoes one on amazon now... 2 days to my holiday and counting now - only slightly excited!!

Shanster · 03/06/2008 01:21

Hey MIssHairspray, have no idea how you cope on the tube, When I lived in London I used to always feel sick on the tube in summer, and I was NOT preggers back then!! Good luck with that!

fymandbean · 03/06/2008 08:21

Morning all - how are you all today?

I have my Doc's appointment on Thurs and am going to see if I can get an early scan - I decided not to lie even if it was just a white lie! if not I'll pay as I think it's important to have the three scans.

I need the reassurance of the first one....

Morning all! Ooh, Iwouldgo, I'm due the day before you... still feels quite unreal.

Poor you primrose... sounds minging. I'm on bread sticks, crackers, cornflakes, snacking pretty contstantly - anything dry and bland that will keep my stomach lined. Sounds like you've got it worse than me though... good luck. that's a green sick face by the way, not an envy one!

moosemama · 03/06/2008 11:27

Hi all

Went for scan first thing and everythings ok!

Saw little beany with good strong heartbeat measuring about 2 days behind for dates - which would be about right considering my longer cycles/later ovulation.

Got 3 pictures and a DVD!

Thanks to all of you for all your support over the past few days, it really was so much appreciated.

buckles · 03/06/2008 11:33

moosemama really pleased for you. have been wondering how you have been getting on all morning. Are you going to be showing off your DVD to all your friends?!

MissHairspray · 03/06/2008 11:55

Moosemama that's fab news. Wish mine was soon (although def not under the same circumstances) as sometines despite the sickness, tiredness, huge norks etc it is still really hard to believe there could actually be a little person in there. Don't want to go private though unless have any scares so have two weeks-ish to wait.

tinkhasabunintheoven · 03/06/2008 11:58

tryingnottoobsess · 03/06/2008 13:00

congrats moosemama that's fantastic news!

and tink how exciting - think you're the first on the thread for the 12w (or so they think) scan, iirc...

LenniEd · 03/06/2008 13:31

Am really pleased to hear your news moosemama. Now have a relaxing afternoon watching your DVD with your feet up!

Packing for my hols here - my usually rational brain is all mushy and I am struggling to put anything useful in the suitcase. Thankfully did DDs packing last night before brain melted.

iwouldgoouttonight · 03/06/2008 14:15

Does anyone know how you go about booking your 12 week scan? With DS I had two early scans (about 7 and 10 weeks I think) because of bleeding so then I didn't have a 12 week one. This time I'm having a dating scan at the doctor's surgery because I don't know my dates (it'll be around 8 weeks - seeing the MW on the same day) - do you think I'll still get a 12 week one at the hospital? Will I get sent an appt once I've seen the midwife or do I have to book it myself?

LenniEd · 03/06/2008 14:44

Iwouldgoouttonight whether you will also get a 12wk scan will depend on how things work in your health authority.
In mine you get:
one dating scan (12wks)
one anomaly scan (20wks)
In some areas the dating scan is a nuchal scan instead, but they still date the pregnancy.

So if you are having a dating scan at 8 weeks in my area you wouldn't also get one at 12 weeks. If you need earlier scans here because of bleeding they are called viability scans and if the pregnancy is dated at one of those scans then you wouldn't be offered a dating scan at 12wks unless you had already got it booked, in which case they don't usually take it off you. As I say though, this is all just what happens here - different areas are different.

As for booking scans, in my area the midwife calls ultrasound and books them for you, or in rare circumstances will ask you to ring and book them yourself, but only if the midwife can't get one booked because you work awkward hours or are going away or something. In other areas you get a referral when you book in and will get an appointment letter through the post.

I'm not sure whether you will get another one at 12wks or not - it will depend on whether you get nuchal scans or not I think. But your midwife will be able to tell you for sure. Am also impressed that your doctor's surgery can do dating scans - very advanced!

iwouldgoouttonight · 03/06/2008 14:59

Thank you - thats made things a bit clearer. I'm also impressed they can do scans at our surgery - it must be new because they didn't with DS two years ago. Although I do doubt how accurate the dating will be as the doctor doing it is a GP rather than a sonographer, and I would expect you'd need to be quite experienced to do it accurately so early on?

LenniEd · 03/06/2008 15:14

Yes - I would have thought so too. I did some work experience in ultrasound when I finished my degree and despite having a Physics degree and knowing exactly how the equipment all worked, there was still loads to learn. I never had anything to do with antenatal scans either, just injured joints and kidney stones. Perhaps the GP was a sonographer in another life!

I have just written to my MP about the changes to nuchal scans in my area. It shouldn't be free in some areas and cost £180 here. For some people that is a ridiculous amount of money to pay .

iwouldgoouttonight · 03/06/2008 15:56

We don't get offered a nuchal scan either.

scared1976 · 03/06/2008 16:08

really stupid question

what is a "nuchal scan"?

witchandchips · 03/06/2008 16:16

they measure the fluid at the back of the baby's neck (called the nuchal fold). A measurement of 2.5m or above indicates a higher risk of chromozonal abnormalities such as Downs.

mel2005 · 03/06/2008 17:15

i looked into nuchal scans with my other two children and they were 100 miles away but now there is a place 80miles away and its £160. they are now saying its 85-90% accurate, it used to be the same as the tripple bloods ( 75% ????)so i didnt bother before.
i am now 33years old so i am not sure if i should do it. i havent had any problems before and i do know someone who had the nuchal scan the same age as me and was classed as low risk but had a downs baby.
i am not sure if its worth it (and all the extra stress) but i am thinking about the effect somethng like that would have on my other childrens lives as i know someone who has had to care for her downs sister after her mother died and its not an easy job.
does anybody know if they have a quick look at the nhs 12 or 20 week scan for the nasal bone and nucal fold fluid anyway. i wish they did one closer to us as i would certainly consider it, but its alot of money.

Upwind · 03/06/2008 18:25

"does anybody know if they have a quick look at the nhs 12 or 20 week scan for the nasal bone and nucal fold fluid anyway"

I am in Scotland and was told that unofficially they do at the 12 week scans. The only scan we are offered. I am 30 and trying to decide if it is worth scraping the money together for an anomaly scan.

fymandbean · 03/06/2008 18:34

Hi a quick WWYD for you

I have two (casual) meetings with friends set up, one on Friday and one next week. Do I

a) Cancel. Both sets of friends WILL NOTICE I am PG and probably mention it (one has 1 kid, 1 has 2 kids and 1 has 4 and all know me well enough to see i have a BIG tummy)

b)go and risk it. and make the feel bad by telling them I'm fat if they mention it.

I don't want to tell people before I'm 12 weeks and am only 6 currently which will mean avoiding them for another 6 weeks.
