Another new thread! By the time this one runs out we might have some babies!!! Although, we do chat a lot so maybe not...

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
debinaustria · 22/04/2008 21:26

Mistermoo, we live here

Alipalli - hope the NCT class is good.

Been talking to my friend here who had a baby in the hospital where I'll be going. Apparently all I will need is my own toiletries and bras. There's a room with changing mats in and drawers of clothes for baby, nappies and wipes (- not cotton wool and water), you're not expected to have your own, for mums they provide towels, sanitary pads, nighties, etc...
My hospital bag is going to be so much smaller this time isn't it?

I have to admit that despite this I am nervous about giving birth out of the UK, what if my German or their English is a problem? panic, panic tonight!!

debinaustria · 22/04/2008 21:28

Oh Josey, and here's me panicking. I don't imagine that this will be it? Can't remember your due date? I was having pains down below earlier on in the week and he seems to have calmed down now. Glad you've got your MW check in the morning, let us know how you get on.

jivegirl · 22/04/2008 21:33

Hellooo could I join this thread plz?

Feel like a bit of an imposter but only just got into mumsnet.

I'm Claire, I have DD who is 20 months and I'm due in the middle of June.. baby is currently breech and I'm secretly hoping he/she stays that way as I had an awful character building birth the first time and am dreading apprehensive about going through it again.

Get scanned in 2wks due to placenta previa @20wk scan so will find out soon!

Rolf · 22/04/2008 21:34

alipalli - nice to know there's another DH out there with the same approach to baby naming! DH is happy to reject namee but never comes up with any suggestions of his own.

Deb - your hospital sounds very luxurious and well-equipped. I bet Ernest's is too, and Para's. It's just the UK hospitals where you need to bring in antibacterial wipes and shower shoes

ernest · 22/04/2008 21:39

good evening all. I am absolutely cream crackered - viewing was due at 5.30 and worked non-stop from 11.30 to 5.26. She was amazed at how great the house looks tho No one jumped up to buy it tho

need to get a runner/mat/rug for our entrance, as there's loads of muddy footprints there after this pm visit. Seen 1 on ikea web site that I really like - but strongly suspect it's identical to my next doors neighbours'. Is it too cheesy & outrageous to buy the same one as her? Bearing in mind in 2 days I won't live here any more?

going to rush out tomorrow to get one - any favourites? (Tiles are pale beige marble-like stone)

needahand, my miswife with ds1 insisted he was head engaged, but he was breech, so clealr she'sd been feeling his bum, and the big lump rearing up under my ribs was clearly his head. I think I knew or suspected as much, but as a 1st timer didn't have the confidence to doubt her. How do you feel? Saying that, despite being on number 4 still find it difficult to work out what on earth's goin on in there.

No stress incontinence thatnk goodness - not much fun. big sympathies all you who have this. other pg had terrible heartburn, but only had a few spells of it this time. One weird ( I assume) pg symptom this time - does anyone else have this? Is body hair, or rather lack of. I maybe need to shave my legs or armpits about 1 x per month. It's really weird, body hair just seems to have slowed down completely. Never exprienced this other pg.

In earlier post btw, it's my gynaecologist who said that a very lively baby in utero is likely to be a wild mad baby. My neighbour said her 4th one was also very active in the belly and is a loony wild child now. Great.
Whose baby is getting lots of hiccups? ANd how much/strong BH are people having?

poppy34 · 22/04/2008 21:51

hi all -ernest don't say that re lively babies - I have been harbouring a suspicion that little miss kick will be no quieter when she arrives..

alipalli - my nct starts friday so keen to hear how you go. Am quite excited but also have a little girl going to school will I make friends feel about it too.

Feeling loads better today and actually quite enjoyed being back in work and busy. Slightly annoyed as had lunch with one of the people on next grade up (I don't know where he comes in myers briggs as think he may have elements of shaper as good on ideas/think on action crossed with being as mad as a badger - not one of the official categories). Was all fine but he kept going on about child care difficulties -teh subtext of this was a smug gloat about how wonderful the nanny he had for his kids but also a thinly veiled dig about are sure you should be coming back . Sadly for him our annual feedback session where he was mentioned was this afternoon so you can imagine what followed....

hi jivegirl - fingers crossed for your scan -when is your due date? Can see why you are nervous after last time but lets hope all ok this time.

katyjo · 22/04/2008 21:57

Welcome jivegirl sorry to hear about your bad experience last time.

Ernest when did you find out ds1 was breech?

ds was a really active baby in the belly, but he was a really easy baby, this one is much quieter, although does get hiccups!

No BH as far as I can tell.

I'm off to bed as I am knackered, need to stop trying to do so much I think.

debinaustria · 22/04/2008 21:57

You deserve a medal Ernest, fancy having time to post on here!!

I don't think you need a mat, you just need the boys in the play room in Ikea whilst you sit down for 5 minutes on your own

I wouldn't worry about getting the same one as your neighbour, what does it matter? I like the Hessum , sounds like it would go with the colour of the tiles, but would it show the marks more than something like the Hedda?

Hey scan twin, I also have a very lively baby in there this time - GREAT!! but with the hair growth, mine was greatly reduced in the 1st 6 months or so , now it seems back to normal. I hoped at 1st that it meant it was a girl, but the scan and now the hair growing has put pay to that!!

Good luck tomorrow

Welcome Jivegirl, you're not an imposter, as long as you can type fast and chat lots then you're in!!

josey · 22/04/2008 22:05

argh why does dh insist on putting things up in the floored area of our garage so im screwed if i need a bag carrier here we come or might pinch ds school bag in real emergancy most essentials are in a carrier at the mo waiting to be sorted

Debs sure we are just having a hormonal OMG are we ready...I dont envy you having to think in another language during labour though swearing and cursing at someone and them not understanding does have its appeal.

Ernest I quite like the venny and sigrid, do like the koge but bit expensive for leaving behind. The lack of hair growth is an old wives tale for a girl since having dd my leg hairs hardly grow at all. Hope you get a phonecall tommorrow with someone wanting your house after all your hard work today.

waves welcome to jivegirl

PregnantPenguin · 22/04/2008 22:10

Thanks for your honesty everyone - makes me feel better - and reminds me to do pelvic floor exercises! Not had any wee escaping yet, but if anyone wants to discuss piles, you know where to come!

Josey - Please make sure you post tomorrow so we don't all panic! Thinking of you.

Welcome Jivegirl.

ernest · 22/04/2008 22:26

katyjo, I found out ds was breech when I was 7 cm dilated and promptly whipped down for an emergency section.

Thanks for the rug comments. Just hate to be a copy cat, but my favourite is the Köge, and I think this is the same as the nighbour's, I'd just leave it there till it sells (if) and then I'd bring it to our new house. I looked at the Hessum, and not ruled it out, but owrried it'll show up the marks, and at the end of the day, it's the only reason I'm getting it for.

ds3 was the easiest aby in the world, so am anticipating trouble this time!

welcome jivegirl.

I intend to be thoroughly lazy in a couple of weeks time, then I'll be able to spend more attention to everybody.

Deb, don't worry about the birth.
I moved to swtizerland with practically no German when I was 6 months pg with ds2 and it was fine. Most staff spoke English and that coupled with sign language and you'll be fine, honest

Hope German hospuital ok, suspect it will struggle to live up to Swiss standards.

In 2 weeks I will have appt with new, German doctor, and jhopefully be able to organise a hospital, and maybe consider packing a hosptal bag. ( )

bitofadramaqueen · 22/04/2008 22:27

hello jivegirl.

Just had a quick scan of this evening's posts - just back from NCT classes and absolutely shattered. But if I dont scan them tonight I'll never catch up tomorrow.

I love myers briggs! I think it's great and anyone who gets the chance should do it. I found it v useful in helping me understand how I react to certain situations/interact with people etc. I'm an INTJ (which only 2% of people are apparently). There is one other INTJ in my organisation and we had a very entertaining train journey once about all the things that we're intolerant of. INTJ's like vision, big picture stuff and dont really like unnecessary detail. My boss always worries that she's boring me stupid in team meetings and has to make a real effort not to over-explain things to me.

Crikey, I'm boring everyone with myers briggs, sorry.

At tonight's NCT class I discovered that 'gas and air' is the same gas they used to use in the dentist. I have some very traumatic memories of gas at the dentist as a child so the idea of gas and air now terrifies me. Aaarrggghhh! However, we did talk about accupressure which sounded quite interesting. Any experiences/links anyone?

OP posts:
nappyaddict · 23/04/2008 00:31

ERNEST please could you come over here i have a question to ask you about glasses and young children.

Rolf · 23/04/2008 03:47

Can't sleep. I have to go to a funeral tomorrow (today) and I'm all fretty about it .

Welcome Jivegirl. I've just had a scan for placenta previa and my placenta is now spread out across the top - hope yours is too. Sorry you had an overly thrilling birth experience last time round.

Ernest - I like Sigrid. Quite a lot of BH contractions, sometimes strong enough to wake me up.

My baby was breach at last week's scan but I have no idea whether it still is. Do they always recommend sections for breach babies or is a natural delivery considered safe?

ernest · 23/04/2008 05:19

Rolf, sorry you're anxious about the funeral DId I miss whose it is, or have you not yet said? Being pg really makes it all so much worse an emotional too Hugs and strength for today.

Re breech - I don't think it's an automatic given ( a section), BUT depends on position, and for safety's sake they often recommend it, so fewer and fewer midwives/obs are experienced with breech deliveries, making it even less safe - vicious circle. Plus depends on type of breech. SOme positions are a total non-starter. Did your midwife give any indication as to what your hospital would allow?

NA, answered your glasses q. hope it helps.

Oh, and morning everybody

debinaustria · 23/04/2008 06:27

Hey you've beaten me to it this morning, did you go to bed Ernest?

Rolf - hope the funeral is OK, sometimes the thought is worse than the actual event. Hope baby turns for you before the big day, you've still enough time - do you have a birthing ball to bounce on?

Dramaqueen, I was put out with gas and air at the dentists as a child and didn't like it but it didn't seem the same when I was in labour. I loved/hated it then, used it, declared I didn't like it, they took it away, then I loved it and wanted it back.It did make me feel a bit sick though but then things do that in labour.

PP - I've been there with the piles too, but they seem to have receded at the moment, I imagine they'll be back though!! I got some cream from the Dr, powder to drink to soften the stools and I also made sure I drank enough in the day.

Josey - how are you feeling this morning, did you get your carrier bag packed?

Hope you all have a good day today, my night was slightly better , just feel like I've pulled loads of muscles with coughing. So far this morning, no earache , and only had it once in the night.

ernest · 23/04/2008 06:38

lol deb, yes, I did go to bed, albeit briefly. Unfortunately Anakin Skywalker Ghost (aka ds3), had the hump about me not buying hima bottle of ice tea last night and clearly at 5.30 this was troubling him greatly , 'luckily' I'd wokem up for a wee at 4.30 and couldn't get back to sleep, so I didn't actually have to murder him.. I suppose already being a ghost, in theory I couldn't murder him anyway?

dylansmumplusone · 23/04/2008 08:49

morning all!! upsidedowncake i am also an ESFJ according to that little quiz. it is shockingly accurate! i read bits to dh and he was suitably impressed. of course he still wouldn't do it himself, he probably doesn't want to know (or doesn't want me to know!).

i've completely forgotten to do pelvic floor! i can't remember my own name sometimes though so it's not that surprising. i'll have to do myself a sticker reward chart.

ernest lol at your ds. i'm so glad mine can't open his door yet - he just knocks then we have time to react!

aberdeenhiker · 23/04/2008 08:56

I'm definitely an INTJ and the descriptions always seem pretty accurate to me! There's lots of us in science so I've always felt kinda normal at work. I get so frustrated though when other staff are so slow to get the picture - I'm not the most patient of people!

josey - I hope you're okay today and feeling back to normal...

mellymell · 23/04/2008 09:12

morning all - another boring day stretches ahead of me at work, but another day is crossed off before I go on 'holiday' (according to DH!).

Dylansmum - I think I am also ESFJ and used to work in a team where we were all like this, so you can imagine it got a bit heated becuase we were all opinionated and thought we were right!

Hiya Jivegirl - I also had an 'exciting' time with DS1 - hugely looking forward to maternity leave, but does mean that the childbirth bit gets nearer which makes me a little nervous.

Don't know about you lot, but feel absolutely enormous - can't believe my stomach can get any larger and have now completely run out of clothes - even my maternity clothes are getting a bit tight.

Even though I look like a humungous blob (moominpapa anyone), some commuter late for his train managed to crash really hard into me on the way home the other day. Spent the rest of the evening in bed having really horrible BH - just kept thinking 'stay where you are' thoughts to the babe and realising that I had done no hospital bag packing at all! Seems ok now, but the babe is moving around like a mad thing - real squirms and flip flops which is really freaky.

long post - sorry.

Rolf · 23/04/2008 09:17

It's my aunt's funeral. I feel sad for my cousins as their father died a few years ago so now they have no parents left. Their mother was very ill for a year and they nursed her at her home (they all have young children) so they are exhausted. I hate seeing that generation dying and us being the new batch of grown ups - makes me realise they probably felt as clueless as we do.

I haven't really discussed the whole breach/c-section thing, given that there is still plenty of time for the baby to turn. After all this planning and booking the doula and hypnosis lessons, it will be so irritating if I have to have a section. I have a birth ball but nor sure where it is . It might be of more use to me if I actually find it mightn't it?.

I love the Star Wars phase. My boys have been through Star Wars, Spiderman and now TinTin, although every so often they revert to an old favourite.

ktpie · 23/04/2008 09:17

Morning all and hello to Jivegirl.

Am intrigued and going to have to go and do that quiz and find out what it classes me as.

I too have to be careful when I sneeze, which I do a lot!

Did anyone else see that embarassing illnesses programme last night? There was a girl on it with stretch marks, they were nowhere near as bad as mine!

Baby has been doing some painful movements recently, the ones that really make me jump, I've got the feeling it is going to be really active once it comes out!

How are you getting on Josey?

ktpie · 23/04/2008 09:33

Turns out I am an ENFJ which is apparently a teacher type, so in the wrong job for a start!

Rolf, sorry to hear about your aunt, hope today goes as OK as it can.

needahand · 23/04/2008 09:48

mistermoo unfortunatley I can't ask other mums. I only moved here last august and because I usually work in London, I don't know anyone.

Jivegirl welcome. Tell us a bit more about yourself (where do you leave, what do you do, what is your latest rant...we all seem to rant a lot these days

alipalli Lol at perceiver. I have never done the test but I must be something like an impatient do-er! will do the quizz when I have a minute.

Debs I am sure your hospital will be fab. Don't worry about the language 1)I am sure you'll be fab 2) I am sure most people understand english especially Austrians they are good with language no?

Ernest would go for the floor mat, who cares if it is the same as you neighbour. It is only for a couple of days anyway. I think the Alvine one would do the trick. The Hessum or Lydum would probably match your colours betters but I am not too sure about the Hessum. I am not sure if the baby is breech or not, but I am switching my care to a team of two independent midwives, so I will get at least another two opinions. And I have a scan on Friday which should help. To be honest I never know which bit is poking out.

josey how exciting, you could be our first baby. How many weeks are you again?

dramaqueen acupressure definitely sounds interesting. I remember my tens leaflet recommended a little device to stimulate accupressure point but at the time (I was very much head in the sand with DD) I thought bull...t. Now however I would be interested to find out more too!

Ladies I think we need to remind one another to do our pelvic floor exercises. I was so good at the beginning of my pregnancy but am useless now!

Sorry for long post but it took me ages to catch up again

Upsidedowncake · 23/04/2008 10:17

Morning everyone

Sorry that I didn't do the link for Myers Briggs very well but glad that some of you found it! Dylansmum / Mellymel, ESFJs rock, though as you say, we do tend to think we are right all the time!

Hi there, Jivegirl. Hope your scan is OK.

How are you doing, Josey?

Sorry about your aunt, Rolf. Re Star Wars phase, did your boys have a Thomas phase? DS is mad about him, also Percy, Harvey etc and keeps on spotting Thomas magazines in the newsagent.

Debs, your hospital sounds very luxurious. How does the health system work in Austria? Is it state-funded / insurance / private?

Wow, Ernest, I really hope you can relax once you get to Munchen. Will the boys all be in school straight away?

Cold loads better, it has retreated to my nose. Spent yesterday on the sofa reading magazines - no work came in and given how lousy I was feeling, I wasn't about to chase it.

My doula just rang as I was posting with lots of ideas about diet and protein in urine. She's really practical and helpful.
