whinegums I am shocked at this policy of no eating and drinking. They did this to me with DD and it is not nice (allegedly it is in case you need a C section, but of course if you have no energy the chances of you having one increase, it is like a vicious circle). I think I would sneak in some lucosade and glucose tablets to be honest. Glad you class was slightly better than last week though!

Lol at talks of little ones in loo with their mums (my DD does that too. Sometimes when she is with my DH and I hear her heavy footstep I quickly lock the door otherwise she gets in and leaves the door open for DH to have an eyeful ). Ah the days where I could have a pee in private..

Upsidedowncake · 21/04/2008 17:14

Oh dear mad neighbour, Poppy. My Maclaren XT came fully assembled, but we spent about two weeks learning how to collapse it and put it up again before DS arrived. Now I almost do it one-handed!

Rolf are you not showing yet? What clothes are you wearing?

Clever Josey for not falling down the loo! How old is your DD?

debinaustria · 21/04/2008 17:14

I am that there are labour rooms that aren't en-suite, I thought that they all were.

needahand · 21/04/2008 17:16

The nice hospital I visited at the weekend doesn't have ensuites labour rooms either. It seems that where I leave (west midlands) none of them do. I did find that shocking too.

How are you getting on with the pram Debs?

debinaustria · 21/04/2008 17:20

Needahand - scroll down - I've finished and photos are on my profile

poppy34 · 21/04/2008 17:21

upsidedowncakesglad xt comes fully assembled -most of reason I liked it was it was the only one I could operate.

this really bodes well for all the other baby junk that is going to come my way.

rolf was also intrigued re materntiy comment - are you just lucky re size or are you living in limbo? have to say did laugh re your discussions on name but glad you're having a lovely day at home.

katyjo · 21/04/2008 17:31

Debs wish you could see rooms at qm, very small old and shabby. I was in one when I had ds as I was induced had to be monitored lots of drips etc. I was at the end of the bed on birthing ball and room was that small mw had to climb over the bed to get around me. splodge they make sure you go to the toilet every four hours during labour, I had to sit on a potty thing - very dignified! It was about 12.30am and ds was born 2 hrs later, so strangest pee I've ever had!

Really struggling with names, thinking at the mo might have to go for Harry, but I was hoping for something a bit more unusual and ds is called Hamish so I think 2 h's is a no no! I'm so confused!

needahand · 21/04/2008 17:32

Debs - Well done! I would never ever have managed that on my own. Come on fess up, did your DH help you at all ?

Neenzandhertwinbeans · 21/04/2008 18:10

I can't believe it is less than 24 hours since I last posted and we've filled more than THREE pages - don't know if we'll get any births into this thread!

Just been chatting to my friend who has id twins. Hers were born 35+6 weeks and were 5lb 1 and 5lb 7 but still needed special care for 12 days!! I have been getting so complacent thinking if mine arrived now everything will be fine (and praying they arrive now!) but I have realised that it would not necessarily be OK. I am going to refocus on 37 weeks - two weeks on Thursday. and not hope for any time sooner! They really should be OK by then.

Debs, you are so right about the worry and the sleep not going away after they are born! I know I am going to be terrible for checking on them every two mins to check they are still breathing.

Parofleurmapu · 21/04/2008 18:14

hehe Debs well done ! It looks similar to my quinney

Hiya neenz meant to say glad to see you back! I know i am going to be like that too!! but hey suppose cant be helpd!

debinaustria · 21/04/2008 18:41

No my dh did not help me at all, in fact he hasn't even been to see it in it's completed stage - not that I'm feeling bitter or anything.

To make matters worse earache is still here and it turns out the episode of Desperate housewives that I watched last week was the last in the series - boo hoo, that's my Monday nights viewing, that and Grays anatomy, both on German TV but you can listen to them in English. So now I've got to try and stay awake for G.A at 10.00 pm.

splodgesmum · 21/04/2008 19:16

Neenz, my brothers are twins and were born at term but still needed SCBU (albeit briefly - and are now strapping 33 year olds so didn't do them any harm!), but I have friends who had theirs at 37 weeks and no need of SCBU at all. Fingers crossed yours will fall into the latter category.

I'm glad others thought all labour rooms were en-suite and it wasn't just me! I have tried to use a commode on a ward before and failed miserably so think I will have to resign myself to trekking to the loo - oh well.

Horrified at the thought of being starved during labour - that sounds awful!

whinegums · 21/04/2008 19:17

Yes, I was shocked about the eating and drinking thing too, another of their 'policies' - which they are apparently rewriting, but not in time for June. How will they stop me? Wrestle a chocolate bar out of my hand or pour my ribena down the sink??! Hmmmm. If I'm in labour for hours, there's no way I can do it on water alone. DP will have his orders in advance for all these things - and a big stick to keep 'them' away from me!

Also found out there is only one labour room ensuite. As for single rooms after the birth, it's first come first served!

Katyjo, I love Harry. We have had a few thoughts, but won't decide until the monster is born - I can't pick a name for someone I haven't even met. In the meantime, I'm telling anyone who really bugs me about names that we're going to call him Xerxes or Figaro.

goingfor3 · 21/04/2008 19:19

If you are in early labour I'm sure you can eat. When you are in establised labour it's high unlikely you'll want to eat, well that's what I found!

bitofadramaqueen · 21/04/2008 19:38

whinegums I'm telling people Jemima or Zebedee .

Thankfully, my hospital now allows eating but I dont think it was so long ago that any eating was banned in labour. We talked about it at NCT classes and it was to do with the very very small risk of something or other if you needed a general anaesthetic but actually they've realised that you are more likely to need a c-section if you're too starved to cope with the exhaustion of labour. Get that stick to beat them off into your hospital bag pronto!

aberdeenhiker · 21/04/2008 19:42

Hmm, my hospital let us go for a walk to the hospital canteen while I was in labour last time. I only felt up to eating a yoghurt and a juice box but it probably helped a lot. Especially for a long labour, how could you not eat?

mistermoo · 21/04/2008 19:45

hello ladies

mind if I join? am due no. 3 early June... now off work and missing chat... and from my brief perusal of board believe you are champions of chat?

Already have a dd (5) AND ds (3.5) - this next one is another boy (gawd help me) and am planning home VBAC.

Katyjo - my DS is also called Hamish... know what you mean about the 2 Hs in the family... I was thinking of Harriet if this one had been girl, but thought would lead to too many teenage arguments opening each others letters etc.

um, anyway, hello...

poppy34 · 21/04/2008 20:20

hi mistermoo and welcome - did you have either dd or ds at home? sorry - first timer and have been home all day so have just been trying to get my head round all the reading on the topic (am due to go to hospital for hopefully natural birth).

Neenz - dh is a twin and I think only special care he had was when his mum had a cigarette adn a cup of tea after his brother was born but before he arrived. I won't tell you how much he and his brother weighed.. Fairplay to my mil as I don't know how she did it.

Friend at work wife had twins at about 36 days adn I think they were kept in for a few days but for observation with her rather than weeks.

Rolf · 21/04/2008 20:24

Welcome Mistermoo . I have a Harriet - great name!
Tell us more about yourself...

I didn't realise some hospitals didn't let you eat in labour - how uncivilised. If you're induced it's so boring waiting for something to happen that all you can do is visit the shop to buy biscuits!

The labour room I was in last time was en-suite but I've never had a proper tour of the hospital so don't know if all of them are. The post-natal room was a single, en-suite room too - it was lovely. I'm pretty sure the ones I had for the boys (diff hositals) were not.

Well, 2 of my favourite names have been mocked on this thread today (Agnes and Jemima) .

dylansmumplusone · 21/04/2008 20:30

wow there's a lot of messages! welcome mistermoo, hope you can keep up!!

not only are there no ensuites in our hospital, but the one loo for the whole ward i was on was spattered with blood everywhere (toilet, bathtub, floor). i had an epi so ended up with a catheter (sp?) but was actually relieved to get one. cue home birth this time!!!

debs if it makes you feel any better dh has never put together ANY of DS' stuff in the 2 years he's been around (ds that is, not dh!). i've done the amby bed, cotbed, pushchairs, chest of drawers, changing table... i'm sure there's more. he's what i like to call the anti-diy guy. tbh it's easier to do it without him because he gets so stressed about it.

i'm actually looking forward to ds taking more interest in my trips to the loo as at the moment he has no interest whatsoever and i know he's not going to be ready to train for a while yet!!

dylansmumplusone · 21/04/2008 20:32

pp i've also started adding a couple weeks when strangers ask. it's so much nicer to hear, oh you're not that big really than, omg you're huge!!

Rolf · 21/04/2008 20:54

v nice pushchair, Deb, and I'm impressed at your assembling skills.

Maternity clothes - I wore non-maternity trousers below my bump (with a belly band on top) until they were painful. Then had another attempt at persuading DH to get my clothes from storage. Then ordered 2 pairs of yoga trousers from Blooming Marvellous.

I bought 3 tunic tops at the beginning of the pregnancy and am still wearing them. So my maternity wardrobe is very limited and getting rather shabby. There's not much in storage - nothing very exciting - but it would be v nice to have some more variety. I've had spells of getting v pissed off with DH about it but in his defence he's been so overworked that he has had no time for anything.

poppy34 · 21/04/2008 21:09

can see why you would be hacked off rolf -think you've been very patient so far.

debinaustria · 21/04/2008 22:08

Welcome Mistermoo, I am also having my 3rd - and he's my 3rd boy, in early June. My boys are aged 8 and 6. Hope you have the time to keep up with us as we are pretty chatty.

Rolf - I like Jemima

off to bed here, fingers crossed that the earache will have gone by tomorrow and that dh is also better. Miserable when you're both poorly.

mistermoo · 21/04/2008 22:09

oops sorry, dh came home and wanted a conversation... how thoughtless.

dylansmum - like the adding weeks tactic. i'm 5'2" and have looked as if full-term from about 24weeks.. would try that, except for pp have already been asking me 'haven't you had that baby yet?' for a couple of weeks now.

poppy - didn't have either at home, but planned no. 2 to be at home after crap hossie experience (funnily enough also involving one loo to 3 million labouring women and having to clean someone else's blood off loo seat whilst having ctx...)

DD was normalish birth, but DS overdue by 17 days, then got spooked by consultant and went for elcs - was awful.

sooo - gone totally vegetarian this time, and opted for Independent MW, and another attempt at HB. Maybe this time my earth mother will out... (actually preferably baby, but hopefully both at same time IYSWIM)
