splodgesmum · 21/04/2008 12:55

first grandchild for MIL (and possibly only one if we never managae another successful IVF), hence the pressure

you mean woman, buying a house with stairs!

love the image of DS wiping for you aberdeenhiker!!

will let MIL stay when dh goes back to work, but not convinced she'll do much to help - we'll see

i'm lucky, my mum is completely amazing and is going to be my birth partner with dh - i know she will be just the right balance of supportive and unobtrusive (when dh and me want

splodgesmum · 21/04/2008 12:57

oops posted, before i finished typing!

(when dh and me want some 'us' time)

she's a midwife (or was) so has quite alot of experience, not to mention the 4 kids she's had herself

LauraT · 21/04/2008 12:58

I'n not a GP, I'm a hospital doctor (less money, harder work, more exams, much more specialised and hard working )! however, earache moving is probably to do with eustachian tubes and sinuses being involved, with difficulty in equalizing pressure causing your eardrum to be sucked inwards.it's all interlinked!

can't remember who asked, but Neds are Glaswegian chavs I guess, tend to be dressed in tracksuits with white sports socks over the top at the ankles, lots of nasty jewellery and possibly some burberry to top it off.

bitofadramaqueen · 21/04/2008 12:58

Hi again - what a busy Monday. Glad I popped on for a sneaky post mid-morning or it would take my entire lunch hour to catch up!

The chat of 'neds' make me LOL. Be warned, its not the most PC of terms PP but I normally describe neds as a species indigenous to the west coast of scotland (although EU migration means many can be found on the east coast too). I find its quite a hard thing to explain but stereotypical neds are normally quite chavvy (although they're not the same as chavs), fond of wearing shell suits (with the trousers tucked in socks - yes really), have the most atrocious vocabulary (making the 'trainspotting' book read like received pronunciation) and wear the most appalling cheap and nasty gold-plated jewellery (e.g. big gold plated hoop earrings with their name dangling from them, or loads of chains). You'd normally expect them to smoke, drink buckfast and scam the benefits system.

Please dont anyone think I'm a horrible middle-class anti-benefits snob - I'm a working class girl from the Weege (aka Glasgow). . Any of my fellow central belt Scots got an alternative description of neds?

aberdeenhiker · 21/04/2008 12:59

We've got a few imitation Neds up here in my local area too (imitation as they're still young teenagers and are very sweet to my son).

bitofadramaqueen · 21/04/2008 13:00

Cross posted with Laura - sorry, I knew you were a doctor but couldn't remember if GP or not.

I was clearly nearly there with my 'linking of ear canals and sinuses and stuff' then !

OP posts:
bitofadramaqueen · 21/04/2008 13:01

Neds in Aberdeen? Obviously a hidden problem with EU migration.

OP posts:
bitofadramaqueen · 21/04/2008 13:02

Oh that didn't make sense. I meant something along the lines of unintended consequence of EU migration.

We are all very chatty today, there is no way we are going to still be on this thread when the babies start coming!

Greenfairy, the pool was £50.00 which I thought was pretty good as it is the bigger size and includes thermometer, heat cover electric pump for the pool itself and a submersible water pump for emptying the water out of the pool afterwards. We do need to buy a new liner though. Oh, and a sieve - although dh refuses to discuss what the sieve is used for and is trying to pretend we won't need one! Do you have a sieve? Would a normal sieve be suitable do you think?

Debs, your pram sounds like a kypton factor challenge (possibly showing my age there...) I am useless at things like that - also flat packed furniture aka IKEA. In fact the worst argument dh and I ever had was due to flat packed furniture and now he just point blank refuses to even attempt to put it up with me. Apparently my dad is much more suitable for such things.

Upsidedowncake · 21/04/2008 13:56

... cue silence ...

Though once the babies settle down, we'll be on here at nap times, I bet.

Debs, how's the pram doing>

Enjoying the Scottish ned talk. That was totally new to me.

Aberdeen, DS was very interested in helping us with our lavatorial duties, and it seems to have helped with the potty-training. Wees are OK now but poos still a hit and mostly miss affair.

Paro, grrr admin staff

LauraT · 21/04/2008 14:12

For those of you wishing more information on the lesser spotted Ned, may I recommend this educational and entirely factual website

mellymell · 21/04/2008 14:55

With ref the 'Ned' - was rather amused to discover the second meaning when I was holidaying up in Aberdeen last week with DH and DS - the latter is called Ned. We were just told it is another word for a hooligan, which is about right and he lay on his back in a puddle having a tantrum

thegreenfairy · 21/04/2008 14:56

sybil sounds like you got a better deal than me! I've not unpacked the pool yet (will do after we move on Friday) but it's the bigger one, and it has one liner and got it for £40 from pal.

So still need a pump and a heat cover, which, with postage, will be another £37. But I can live with that... Apparently you need a new hose as well, although just an ordinary garden one is fine rather than anything specialist.

Haven't got a sieve yet - slightly in denial about it, but I guess a biggish plastic one?

Am not buying the pool 'accessories' until I've seen my midwife at my 34 week appointment (next Monday), just in case I get an 'early surprise'.

I have read this book which I highly recommend, and also got DH to read (hence no need to actually discuss sieves etc). You can get it second hand on amazon for b*gger all.

needahand · 21/04/2008 15:11

GF I am like you, I am waiting until I am 36 weeks to buy my pool/accessories for HB just in case.

I have read the waterbirth book as well and agree it is quite good. The only thing that worries me is keeping the pool at the right temperature.

nettiehay · 21/04/2008 15:39

Afternoon all,

I understood Neds to be 'non Educational Deliquents' - although I've not been to Glasgow, so haven't actually seen any!

MY MIL is big on the superstition thing too - I'm going to use the 'getting used to how it works' excuse so that I can get th stuff delivered soon. Also, we need to move furniture around to fit the cot in, which we can't really do until the cot is here!

Had third antenatal class this morning - all about breastfeeding, so the Dad's felt a bit suprlus to requirements... oh well, maybe they'll be a bit more included next week.

LauraT · 21/04/2008 15:42

I've never bought the non-educated delinquents line, think someone made it up to fit the name... not sure that it's grammatically correct! I think it's just a name, as they call the female variety Sengas (a lovely glasgow name based on agnes backwards??)

mellymell · 21/04/2008 16:07

Can't believe it - just found the definition of Neds on Wikipedia - wonder whether I should have checked this out before we chose the name!

Have sent info onto DH - he is now suggesting that DS2 is called Sid - think he wants the boys to sound 'ard. Not sure how keen I am.

josey · 21/04/2008 16:09

Afternoon ladies

Debs have you got any further with the buggy yet?

Neeze glad your still holding on though sure you cant wait to have your babies out.

Splodge how mean of your MIL ....they are a law unto themselves mine keeps asking how her grandson is lol she in for a shock!! and my other children she calls her berns.

Loving the talk of Neds Infact I would probably class my MIL as an olden day Ned to an extent

Aberdeen your DS at the toilet made me chuckle my DD insists of holding my knees when I go incase I fall down the toilet then tlling me Im a clever girl, what a big weewee...particularly as she has done this to me in public toilets.

After having a lovely day yesterday I ended up in bed at 9pm being really sick...DD was in with me as had fallen and hurt her knee a few hours later she had raging feaver....thankfully she seems to be alot better now after a few hours kip on the sofa.

Got my Community Midwife run anti-natal tonight....Its my lovely MW that is taking the class so should be ok and hopefully no cheggers...though she did say she will use me though as not a 1st timer

makecakesnotwar · 21/04/2008 16:21

Never heard of a Ned, though very far south of the border here- do have chavs though...

Debs- how's the pushchair battle going?

poppy34 · 21/04/2008 16:38

c'mon debs -have you won the krypton factor yet?

Our pushchair has I think been delivered next door but am too scared to go next door (She is a bit hormonal - last time I saw her she was shouting at us for using our hall lights) so make dh go instead. We've only opted for a maclaren xt so I'm hoping that is not too hard to fix up. although why I'm saying that when I never do anything of that sort if I can help it I don't know.

Loving the Neds talk - am disappointed as think NCT may be Ned free (mind you I may yet relive the highs of bloke who thought babies were born blind and kept trying to dry hump his partner in the hypno classes)

Rolf · 21/04/2008 16:43

No sign of Deb - maybe the pushchair ate her

DH has taken the week off - last time he did this the clerks booked things in for most of the days he was "off" so I was expecting the worst today. But he's been pootling around the house all day. The boys were in school and DD was with the childminder - I can't remember the last time DH and I had the day to ourselves. It was lovely .

He's told me to stop going on about names (fair enough - I'm getting a bit demented about it) as we need to agree the procedure before moving onto substantive issues . He thinks we should decide on middle names first then move onto the first name. This is why NOTHING gets done around here - the two of us are too busy fannying around sniggering to make any progress. We have also agreed in principle to get my maternity clothes out of storage sometime this week!

whinegums · 21/04/2008 16:49

Arrrrfternoon all. Parentcraft surprisingly better this week - mw must have been having a terrible day last week, as she was quite human today. Didn't feel I got any new information, but nice to see the other mums, and get some specific hospital info. Their 'policies' are quite scary - like no eating and drinking, except water, during labour, and the time 'allowed' for each stage. I softened immeasurably to the mw when she said they tried to keep the docs out to allow more time! And reminded us we could refuse at any point. So feel a lot better than last week.

Still no Cheggers though!

Loving the ned chat, and glad no one has taken offence! Neds are mostly harmless, and an endless source of amusement - I found them fascinating when I first moved here, my friends back home love ned stories too. Couldn't believe the Agnes/Senga thing when I first heard it!

Mellymel, don't worry about using the name Ned - it is a very Scottish thing, and outside of the central belt, won't raise an eyebrow!

On another note, does anyone know how to remove bugaboo adapters from a maxi cosi car seat? Friend has given us one with adapters attached, and I cannot work out how to get the sodding things off (we're not getting a bugaboo - have posted on the pg board as well for help!).

whinegums · 21/04/2008 16:56

Have already had replies re the adapters, and am embarassed at how easy it was to get them off - doh!

debinaustria · 21/04/2008 17:12

FINISHED, well I can get the car seat on and the carry cot, haven't attempted the pushchair bit yet, but I won't need that bit until baby is about 5/6 months old so no desperate rush. I will attempt it this week when I feel more human though.

Photos on my profile (not very good ones, the boys took them)
