Afternoon all.
Well we are about to undertake a loft converstion. I say we but I mean DH, he thinks he can do it cheaper then getting anyone in and also wants to build an extension downstairs, I am getting concerned about the mess already and if it will be completed in time .

Do any of you live in the midlands? Just wondered as some of you seem to know one another and I just wondered if anyone lived near me? Just be interesting to know where people are.

I need new bras now! I am in my feeding bras that had with DD as boobs have got bigger quicker and will pop out of theses soon! DH thinks its great

Hope you all enjoyed the sun yesterday. We had a bbq for DH's b'day and to celebrate our relief from the amnio results. We also went to wonderland fri which was lovely. Am shattered now though!

AM looking forward to scan thurs, am getting tempted to find out sex as some of you have already done so. I never intended to though, you are all making me want to though

Have a good rest of the day

jenwa · 01/06/2008 17:46

bigmouthstrikesagain DD may get it worse as they say if they have been in contact with it lots then they usually do. Hopefully she will not suffer to bad and keep up with the piriton. I also heard oat baths are meant to help. DD wanted me to put calamine on her spots with ear buds and she had hundreds so it took forever! That was DH's fault as he started it!

star6 · 01/06/2008 17:52

accessorize - yes I'm in the UK am I'm a teacher - I just don't teach for a british school (I teach for an international school - completely different set of rules/salaries/packages...etc.) Sorry for the confusion

AandMsmum · 01/06/2008 18:42

Welcome girlwiththemousyhair

Good to hear that all is well with you myjob looked back at my previous post and think maybe I was a little dramatic and should learn to chill out a bit too!

Emmsy1 · 01/06/2008 18:43

jenwa I live on the Wirral, its just across the Mersey from Liverpool, not that far from you!
accesso I have always used pampers disposables with my previous babies! I would like to opt for cloth nappies but don't really know much about what options are available and the cost etc... I remember when I was 15, my mum had a baby, she used terry's nappies, they were quite large and she would fold them into a 'kite like' shape and then place a nappy liner in and use a large nappy pin and a pair of rubber pants! She always had nappies in soak using miltons sterilizer. I don't even know if they still produce those type of nappies anymore??
star I bought the june issue of Pregnancy and Birth (even though I already have children) and they gave away a CD with the issue, anyway I sat down to watch it the other night, I was really excited as I can't wait to have my baby. After the CD was finished I felt sick and scared, really wish I hadn't bothered, it just reminded me of how much pain I may have to go through again!
not all of my labours were 'that' bad, but 1 inparticular was, I have always asked for epidurals but have never been given one! they always say that the aniethetist is in theatre, even at 2.00am in the morning! I admire people who can go through labour without any type of pain relief, but I am not one of them, definately going to try and get one this time!

Emmsy1 · 01/06/2008 18:56

jenwa hope DH does a good job with loft conversion, mine can't even light our gas fire! It's me that ends up doing all the DIY, gets me down sometimes, I'm crap at it but at least I will have a go!

star6 · 01/06/2008 19:00

Wait.... WHAT???? You asked for an epidural and they didn't give you one?????? I thought you could pretty much have one if you wanted! This is what I am counting on right now... I know, I know, I know... everyone says - oh, just go with the pain, you'll be surprised at how much you can handle... well, I can BARELY handle the "stretching" pains and have a few other (very valid) reasons that I KNOW I will have a lot of difficulty coping with the birth...
How can one ensure that she will get an epidural?

AandMsmum · 01/06/2008 19:06

rosebury and 07mumstheword I'm near Bristol and booked in to Southmead as well! Nice to hear of people a little more local to me, I don't go into Broadmead all that much as that much I can't stand the noise and fume smells so the Mall is always the better option for me!

Good luck with the DIY all who are venturing or at least attempting, my husband as willing as he is just never seems to find the time to finish anything!! I wish he just wouldn't bother starting..

Jenwa just realised I hadn't yet congratulated you on you amnio results, I really please everything is okay.

milfAKAmonkeymonkeymoomoo · 01/06/2008 19:07

Hello everyone, CSWS reminded me that I have joined this thread and haven't posted for a while . Now 21 weeks ish 9depending on who's dates you believe!) and had my scan last week, so far all is well with bubba and we are expecting a boy. When the sonographer went over the relevant area even I managed to see that it was a boy , she did comment that there is no way that girls have those bits . Have told DD (2.3) and she keeps talking about 'baby bruvva' we told her the name, but haven't told anyone else however we had the ILs down and she let the name slip - 'Mummy got baby Olli-er in her tummy'!!

milfAKAmonkeymonkeymoomoo · 01/06/2008 19:08

Emmsy I used resuables with DD, let me know anything you want to know!

AandMsmum · 01/06/2008 19:13

Oh forgot to tell you all about v. cute thing dd2 has started to do! She is 18 months and dd1 has taught her to kiss my tummy very loudly with a big MMWAAAAHHH, and if you ask her "what do you say to the baby" she cups her hands round her mouth and shouts "HELLO BABY!!" into my belly button! how cute is that?!!

Emmsy1 · 01/06/2008 19:28

star Your best to ask for one as soon as you set foot in the hospital! On two occasions the aniethetist turned up when I had already had my boys, which seems to me a little coincidental, and my worse labour that lasted the longest he didn't show up at all, my mum was furious that they left me in so much pain for so long. The midwives seem to always try and put obstacles in the way of my requests. I did complain to the senior midwife about how I was treated, just don't think they have enough staff including aniethetists to be bothered to push for what you want. This time round when I went for my booking in appt, the MW didn't even ask me would I like to stay in hosp after the birth, she said may as well put you down for an early discharge as thats the way things are going! I was quite emotional on the day after having 2 previous M/C's that I didn't say any thing. When I got home I wrote in my notes that the MW didn't give me much choice, and that I would prefer to stay in for 2 days. so looking forward to going to hosp on 9th June
MilfAKA reusables? are they similar to the old fashioned terrys? would I need pins/liners/rubber knickers and do you wash and soak them in milton S?

Emmsy1 · 01/06/2008 19:33

Star really don't want to worry you, your hospital may be super! It's just with this conversation being brought up, it's brought back some horrible memories, and I also want to ensure that I get my 'rights' this timexx

milfAKAmonkeymonkeymoomoo · 01/06/2008 19:34

No I have got shaped resuables see here www.kittykins.co.uk/cloth-nappies/type/23/ You don't need pins or napsan/milton to soak them, they can be flung straight into a bin and then straight into the machine and washed at 40 or 60. You will need some waterproof wraps to go over the nappy but you don't need to change them at each nappy change (one lasts 24hrs as long as it doesn't get soiled). I use disposable paper liners so that when they poo you just flush them down the loo!

Easy peasy

star6 · 01/06/2008 19:38

Emmsy - I'm having my baby at kingston hospital (kingston-upon-thames)... hopefully! I'm goign to start asking for an epidural at my birth at EVERY appointment, including my scan on friday! ha ha! If I push and annoy them enough, maybe it will help!
Also Emmsy - DH and I are planning to use reusable nappies. I went to a seminar about them with the Surrey Real Nappy Network... the real nappy networks are all around the UK. They definitely took the fear of it out of it and even let you take away a trial package (including a bucket with airtight lid for soaking nappies and a mesh sack that can be thrown in wash with the nappies at end of the day and diff brands of reusable nappies). Some are bigger than others, I just found some really slim fitting ones that are super absorbent and velcro on just like a disposable and come with extra liners on ebay - and then you just put a "wrap" - plastic outer nappy on teh outside - which is also velcro.
BUT, they did say it's easier to use disposable when you're going out. Which we will do for sure. Not sure how long it will last, how great it will be, but the nappy seminar made it certainly sound do-able! We're going to give it a try!! If you have any other questions, please ask!! I have been learning a lot about it lately.

star6 · 01/06/2008 19:41

milfaka... the liners work for solid poos - but what about for the newborn and first few months poos (they say they are runny and liners don't work then). Does it wash off of hte liners and nappies ok in the washing machine?

milfAKAmonkeymonkeymoomoo · 01/06/2008 19:46

I never bothered with liners for the newborn stage, as you rightly say the poo is so runny at that stage it soaks into the nappy. But it washes out easily in the machine. I will be re-using the nappies we used for DD for the new baby, 90% of them have got no marks on them so they have washed well. We used TotsBots Fluffles (don't make them anymore but they were great) and Bumbles for DD. Also TotsBots rainbow nappies when she was newborn.

milfAKAmonkeymonkeymoomoo · 01/06/2008 19:48

Oh and we never used disposables for going out and I never had a problem, just chuck 'em in a plastic bag and shove them in the bucket/wash we you get home. They only time we used disposables was on holidays.

star6 · 01/06/2008 20:36

What did you use to soak them in? The special oil or something else? and did you just wash them all every day?

CantSleepWontSleep · 01/06/2008 20:55

You don't have to soak them in anything - just chuck them in the empty nappy bin until you're ready to wash. Generally advise buying enough for a couple of days in the early stages, and wash every other day, assuming you have a tumble drier so can get them all washed and dried in a couple of hours.

accessorizequeen · 01/06/2008 20:55

Oh, good I've sparked off cloth nappy debate! It was my last antenatal group that got me going with cloth for ds2 although I didn't get on him until 8 weeks so not really knowledgeable on qu's about newborn poo!

You can get 'terries' still and they're a very cost effective way of using cloth with nicer wraps on top than previously. I personally didn't think i could handle that so I have a mixture of shaped nappies+wraps and pocket nappies, which can come with velcro so they're really like a disposable (dp loves them - bumgenius are the ones I use mainly and can be adjusted for newborns right up to toddlers).

The real nappy network is great, if there's not an active lot near you (certainly not where I live!) then Flamesparrow, csws's mate runs a nappy business and is a mumsnetter so I have definitely bought from her! She (and all of the other nappy businesses like Babykind, Kittykins, the Nappy Lady etc) can offer free advice and usually trial kits as well. If you can get somewhere to see them in RL much more helpful as talk of nappies, wraps etc can get soooo confusing!

Star - ah, now I've got you, international school in the UK. Well done for wanting to use cloth first time, no way would I have done it with ds1!!! I just throw the liner in the toilet, or rinse the nappy in the toilet if necessary (really it sounds much more awful than it is in reality, you're wiping it off their bums anyway!), chuck it all in the bucket. I don't soak anything, most people don't these days, and then every 2 days or so (I have quite a lot of nappies) I do a wash at 60. Happy to answer any other qu's, and to encourage cloth nappy use as I'm very happy with doing it, I love a well padded cloth bottom!

bethoo · 01/06/2008 21:05

i am too lazy to use re=usables! will be sticking to my environmentally unfriendly disposables! just like potties i cant stand the thought of tipping poo down the loo!
has anyone here potty trained straight to the loo and missed the potty stage?

milfAKAmonkeymonkeymoomoo · 01/06/2008 21:07

No we don't use anything, if a particularly bad nappy a couple of drops of tea tree oil in a cup of water poured over the nappy in the bucket is enough to keep them fresh. I washed them every other day and we don't have a tumble drier - was never an issue really just part of our lives

WE trained/are training straight to the toilet with DD, she never liked the potty.

accessorizequeen · 01/06/2008 21:09

Funnily enough, I find dealing with ds1's far too numerous to mention poo accidents (he's 4.5! and 2 years on from potty training) much much worse than ds1's nappies! Have you tried any of the more environmentally friendly sposies, bethoo? I'm using nature babies occasionally and just bought a pack for my mum, but I'm still needing to find out how much more eco-friendly they are. Considering composting them at present as we're looking at a wormery anyway, must look up that too!

How old is your lo, bethoo? I haven't gone straight to toilet, but just found it easier to take potty from room to room etc than 'rushing to toilet' - even took it or porta-potty in the car wherever we went for a while. I'm sure it's perfectly possible!

bethoo · 01/06/2008 21:12

my ds is only 15 months so still early to potty train since he has only started walking! have no idea when to start!
