Franch - Can I be nosey and ask what happened that made your first birth experience so bad ?

pooka · 31/01/2005 20:35

Andif - good luck for Thursday. Take it eaaasy in the meantime, if at all possible with 2 boys!

franch · 31/01/2005 20:46

marinda - long story, and one I find quite difficult to tell. A classic spiral of completely unnecessary medical intervention, combined with bullying from start to finish, a nightmare midwife who delivered DD, and a catalogue of very serious errors by the hospital. I was stuck horizontal for several days after the birth and at one point it looked like it was going to be permanent.

We wrote a long letter to the hospital and they accepted responsibility and everything that had happened was completely unacceptable - they promised to make changes, including sending the midwife for communication skills training.

Hope that's not too scary for the first-timers here - another reason I don't want to give too much detail!

hi franch
i am booked into chelsea and westminster hospital in london to have my baby but desperatly want to change as gp didn't really give me much choice and i really want to avoid a hospital birth as i didn't enjoy my last experience . i have thought of a homebirth but i live in a flat and from my past labours i know i am very very noisy lol so i was hoping to go to a birthing centre but they need a referal from my gp and my gp won't give me one, other people have told me to get in touch with my local community midwifes but i don't know how to find them so all in all everythings very confusing at the mo.
Ages of other children on my EDD are 8 and 6 and EDD is 17 september
has anyone else suffered fom swollen ankles ?? its not a bad sign is it?

Sallie · 01/02/2005 09:08

VF - sorry to hear that you had a horrid time at C&W. I had both my children there and have to say I thought the care, particularly in labour ward was great. The post-natal ward wasn't good and was really quite filthy but I didn't stay long either time (a matter of hours just to get the paed check done) so it didn't really affect me. Which birthing unit are you looking at out of interest? If you end up in C&W we could be there at the same time - my edd is 16 Sept!

Beatie · 01/02/2005 09:10

Virtual Fairy - if you know of a birth centre - just ring them up and speak to the midwives. I am sure they will advocate for you to have the choice you want unless there's a valid medical reason for you to give birth in a hospital.

These birth centres are often under threat of closure because not enough people have their babies there - they are just used for post-natal care, so I am sure the midwives would be very willing to help you achieve your goal to use the birthing centre. Good luck.

hi, i didn't have a bad experience at chelsea and westminster, sorry i know my post sounded like i did, it was at leicester royal infirmary where i used to live - i just want to stay away from a hospital enviroment as i don't like hospitals that much and i think that there is a big chance of more intervention than Necessary in the birth if i go to a hospital.
my husband just rang the birthing centre at queen charlottes and he got furthur than me when i rang the other day, seems they still need a gp referal to get me in so i am back to the doctors to moan louder at her, hopefully she will just refer me as there is no reason other than the surgery does not refer to that hospital, a bit crazy since its the closest to me anyway lol
anyway i will let ya all know where my adventure for the perfect birth will take me next
sallie - we both concieved on xmas day then

nably · 01/02/2005 10:16

Ive worked it out that Xmas day was a special day for us too!!

I had flu and throat infection all the week before Xmas and was on anti-biotics, Xmas day I got my libido back!

The first thing my step son (12) said when we told him was...so you had sex then!! bless him

Sallie · 01/02/2005 10:25

Yes, Christmas Eve or Christmas Day. I was also ill over Christmas - had flu so gobsmacked that we actually managed to conceive! If you do end up at C&W am sure you will be fine. Both midwives who delivered my babies were wonderful. Interesting to hear that the LRI wasn't good - my sister is due to have hers there in the summer...

VirtualFairy · 01/02/2005 10:41

lol thats mad we both have same due date both in same area and both have sisters in leicester- although my sister is not pregnant.

Sallie · 01/02/2005 10:42

presumably you also live in South/West London? Hope all goes well and that you manage to sort out the antenatal care that you want. I just wanted to reassure you that C&W is a good place to have a baby (well in my opinion anyway).

andif · 01/02/2005 11:02

Virtual fairy - a bit spooky, our other children will be the same age at EDD (8 and 6) and we have similar EDD (mine is 15/9). Have you told your kids yet? I'm sure my eldest will guess soon that something is going on as I am permanently 'ill', may tell them if my early scan ok on Thurs.

DecafArabica · 01/02/2005 11:39

Good luck andif!
With the due date thing, I can't remember exactly when my last period started, I think it was 8 Dec but it could have been any time between then and 13 Dec. Conception was either 18 or 20 Dec. Anyone know what that means in terms of due dates? Told GP LMP was 8 Dec in order to get earliest possible scan date. But he didn't work out my due date for me. The lovely Emma's diary suggests 14 Sept...

Tallbird · 01/02/2005 12:30

andif - hope you are OK - fingers crossed for you.

I have tried this giving up caffine thing and I just can't (unless I am allowed to crawl under my desk and have an afternoon nap, which might raise a few eyebrows). Does anyone know if it's really that bad for you, or is it just another case of being given over-cautious advice (after all, our parents weren't told to give up anything when they were pregnant, and we all seem to have turned out OK)

DecafArabica · 01/02/2005 12:43

Hiya Tallbird, I have already put a link to some information about caffeine on this thread. Just off out so no time to find for you but it is there maybe about 10 days ago?

Sallie · 01/02/2005 13:00

Tallbird - know how you feel Really really feel sleepy at work today and longing for the end of the day. Am considering asking whether I can get access to our sick room so that I can have a lie down but don't want to arouse suspicion!

PicadillyCircus · 01/02/2005 13:07

Our baby was definitely conceived on 23rd December (my LMP started 16th December so I'm not really sure where that puts me in terms of due dates).

I know it was 23rd December as that was the time when we decided to throw caution to the wind, not realising this baby was going to want to be an early Christmas present .

Are we going to start a new thread soon? This one is getting very long

franch · 01/02/2005 13:11

Done, PC

Here endeth this thread

PicadillyCircus · 01/02/2005 13:14
