Jaxpax - you're not obliged to tell your employer that you're pregnant until you need to give them notice of when you want your maternity leave to start i.e. 15 weeks before the expected week of childbirth. Should probably own up that I'm an employment lawyer so I do this stuff every day.

I'm just starting to feel sick in the mornings. I'm generally OK once I get to work but the tube journey in is pretty awful. I'm just hoping it's not going to get worse.

nably · 27/01/2005 11:37

Thank you for all your words of assurance and congrats to you too.

I keep forgetting that the baby is a size of a pea or something and hopefully I can get back to exercise pretty soon after the bloatedness and slight nausea go away..other than that, I havent really had any physical symptoms.

I work in a very open plan office so I am having to snatch moments on the site when no-one is looking. At least this site isnt pink and fluffy with lots of pictures of mums rubbing bumps like some of them! mmm quite difficult to explain away that one. Funnily enough though, one of my colleagues I speak to about twice a year said he dreamed that I was pregnant the day after I confirmed I was! spooky. I didnt let on but it will be funny when I tell hime. Id be interested to know if anyone else experienced some strange coincidences. Also, tips on explaining why you are not drinking / smoking once the January detox excuse doesnt wash would be good. I cant be on antibiotics for the next 5 weeks!!

I am going to have to tell my work on Monday - currently on annual leave for a couple of weeks. I'm a nurse, and looking at my rota for the next month makes me want to cry! My first week back I am supposed to be doing SIX 12 hour shifts, including 4 nights... at the minute I am fallng asleep around 9pm at home, and not doing a great deal during the day either! Am just a bit worried about telling my boss, as with another pregnant member of staff she was "less than sympathetic" - let her stop nights, but was a bit funny about her changing from 12 hr shifts to shorter ones, and in the end made her go to occupational health to get a doctor's letter to say WHY she needed to do shorter shifts (incidentally, some people on our ward DO the shorter shifts anyway!)... aargh! I'm not looking forward to that telephone conversation on Monday!

andif · 27/01/2005 11:58

Morning all! (just about!)

Just been into town to get the Biocare supplement and am now totally exhausted! Also ds1's 8th bday today (where have the years gone!!) so that doesn't help.

TOP TIP: followed Drs advice to snack on almonds to ward off MS and it REALLY SEEMS TO WORK - at least it did yesterday and this am when I felt it coming on. Must be careful not to overdo it and end up witha baby with almond intolerance!

Beatie, you were asking about nuchal scan. When I had my ds1, I went privately for it as my Dad is a GP and was very impressed with it. Luckily Kingston now offer it. I guess it's only worth having it if you would do anything about the results, as with any test - I was made to feel very guilty the 1st time around by a work colleague who said she would never terminate the pg anyway whatever the result- I now have more courage of my convictions!!

Nably - as for tempting fate, I still feel that a bit the 3rd time around. I'm still paranoid about what I do, esp at this stage. I had a hot bath last night and got abdom pains afterwards then couldn't get to sleep worrying about it. Also have puppy so have to pick up dog poo - does anyone know if that's a toxowhatsit risk - they only seem to mention cats!

Sallie · 27/01/2005 12:01

Picalili - dangerous to let on that you are an employment lawyer - very useful indeed!!! I am also a lawyer and have been feeling very sick on the tube to and from work......

Sallie · 27/01/2005 12:03

Have the date for my nuchal scan already - 28 Feb. Pretty efficient although I know my GP did the referral paperwork during my appointment. Can't wait although very very nervous too. Just hope dh can do a sneaky scan on me before then....

nably · 27/01/2005 12:04

Its sounds as if you need to stop stressing so much about what people's reactions are going to be ladylazurus and how you are going to be treated. I know its easier said than done but I think you are doing them a favour by telling them so early...some people (including a former colleague of mine) couldnt care less and would just call in sick and leave others in the lurch without any explanation..and now they are acting as if they are the only pregnant woman in the history of the world.

Im not a lawyer but im sure by law, they are obliged to accommodate any changes in your situation and you are obviously not the kind of person to take advantage unnecessarily. If they want letters, you give them letters because baby and you are more important and your colleagues (maybe not including your boss) will be so happy for you.

This will be my first like you and telling work is a big thing for me because my husband works in the same office. His boss is a difficult person and he is worried that he wont be able to take his 2 weeks paternity leave without critisism.

Good luck for Monday and dont take any s*....go girl!!

PicadillyCircus · 27/01/2005 12:08

This thread is getting so long (can you guess who doesn't have broadband )?

DS still asleep. That son of mine loves his cot . I am hoping that number 2 will be of a similar frame of mind (although DS didn't really sleep at all at night, unless attached to me, for the first 8 weeks).

It is grey and cold here. I am not inspired to do anything this afternoon although DS and I will probably go somewhere.

Should also go and get the washing out of the machine.

Beatie · 27/01/2005 13:19

No don't go and get the washing out of the machine and make me feel bad for not doing any chores for the past week.

I have to admit I am feeling a little less nauseas today. My m/s seems to have reverted to the evening sickness only.

Andif - thanks for your views on the nuchal translucency scan. I am one of those people who doesn't know what I would do if I found out my baby had Downs Syndrome until I was actually walking in those shoes. So, there's always the possibility that I would act on the information that I learnt. I cannot say either way with 100% certainty.

One of my friends had the nt scan privately so I think I will speak to her. If I have that, would I then forgo the 16 week triple test (blood test)? There would be no point causing my self more worry.

LadyLazarus - lease don't worry about telling your employer. You're entitled to be pregnant and entitled for reasonable concessions to be made at work for the sake of your health. Once you get into the 2nd trimester you might be able to pick up some overnight or 12 hour shifts if you're feeling energetic and glowing like some people do in the second trimester.

Do I gather that the person in charge has never had children herself?

Beatie · 27/01/2005 13:20

Sorry about the double post.

andif · 27/01/2005 13:52

Just had fit of energy/guilt that have done no chores for ages and parents arriving in 1hr, so hoovered house from top to bottom. Now wish hadn't bothered as knackered and kids will wreck anyway after school!!

Had 1st negative experience when told 'friend' - had to as out to dinner with them and found out what on menu (lots of cheese - not good!!) She just said 'that's a shock' then changed the subject and got verbal diarrhoea on every topic but pg!! Wondered if she heard. Decided she is going thro post40 crisis and is jealous, but not sure how will ever speak to her again!! Hopefully she'll get over it! I suppose it is a shock, now I have 2 kids at school full time, but I can't wait - I'll have the time that you do with your 1st and the experience of 3rd!

Beatie · 27/01/2005 14:23

Oh - aren't friends delightful. Why should it matter to her. I knew quite a lot of families growing up who had 2 children close together and then a larger gap between their 3rd. It workder really well.

PicadillyCircus · 27/01/2005 14:31

DH told his boss today and her reaction was shock at the age gap (DS will be 22 months when number 2 comes along). Think she felt a bit bad afterwards.

DH needed to tell her so his contract which should be ending in September can hopefully be extended a bit (whilst at the same time applying for new jobs ).

I did take the washing out and have even put another load on. The end of the washing basket is in sight .

Think DS is not well as he slept so much this morning, managed to have some lunch and is back asleep again. Seems to have a small temperature. Feel very glad that I work part time and he can have a lazy day today.

My feelings of sickness come and go, but my breasts are feeling larger again. Larger definitely being a relative term - even when engorged just after DS was born they were not what you would call large really.

zubb · 27/01/2005 14:35

suprised at the reaction to a 22 month age gap PC, - thats the gap I have between ds1 and 2, and will have between ds2 and baby.
I think it's a great gap

andif · 27/01/2005 14:37

On the subject of boobs , can anyone remember when they stop growing?!!! I desperately need new bras, but am not going to buy now if will have outgrown in 2 weeks time!!

nably · 27/01/2005 15:27

I, too would like to know when they stop growing and the likeliness of them staying larger after the birth...I heard that they sag to smaller than before

Ever since my mum took me to M&S at the age of 13 to buy a 30AAAAbra I have been striving for a larger cleavage. Although they grew a bit since those early years, ive been a martyr for that perfect balcony chicken fillet underwired contraption and an endless search for uplift and enlargement. Until 4 weeks ago that was.....

Now im rooting around for my old arch enemies that made me look flatter and less endowed than a boy so as not to arouse suspicion that ive had a boob job or am preggers! I want to make the most of this advantage of being 'with child' so would like to face that smirking lady in Contessa once more!!

PicadillyCircus · 27/01/2005 15:32

nably, in my experience they stay larger for a while and then shrink to smaller than they were before when you stop breastfeeding .

And in my mum's case (small boobs run in our family) after two children they as well as being even smaller are also saggy.

Not actually sure mine are any bigger today - think it's just the bra they're in.

YOKEFLEET · 27/01/2005 15:34

I'm sure my boss thinks I'm skiving! The ladies loo is right next to my MD's (male) office, I must have been about 15 times today and each time I go I can see him looking upto the clock!!!
How long does this go on for? or don't I want to know!!! lol

nably · 27/01/2005 15:45

Thanks for that picaddillycircus...something to look forward to eh?!!!

.....I wonder what happens if you dont Bfeed???!! mmmmm....I suppose there are more important things I should be worrying about than saggy boobs!

nably · 27/01/2005 15:53

Yokefleet - If he's a bloke he probably hasnt even noticed! I was told that being paranoid is part of pregnancy!!

YOKEFLEET · 27/01/2005 16:06

Nably - thanks for that. I work for a small company with only 5 of us in the office that includes the MD & Gen Manager and one of the ladies had a baby on Tuesday am and as I got married last year I know he won't be suprised!!!

(I hope my boobs don't get to huge as they are to big to start with!!!lol)

LadyLazarus · 27/01/2005 16:09

Thanks Nably and Beatie! I will remember all of that! (urgh I feel sick now!)

DecafArabica · 27/01/2005 16:11

My boobs went from 34D to 36J (yes, J) when I was pregnant last time, and eventually sagged back to 34DD; have now bought softer bra in 36D which is a bit too big but I know they'll grow. Mine got big partly because I put on so much weight all over when pg with DS. Which is not going to happen this time.
My nausea has paled into insignificance compared with the delights of bronchitis. Hope poor little bean inside isn't suffering too. When I cough I keep thinking of it feeling bumped about!

nably · 27/01/2005 16:23

You poor thing! I hope you get better soon.

I know what you mean about the bean bouncing about worry. I havent been running for ages wondering if it might harm the embryo which is apprently floating around in my uterus (which is what the doctor told me last week). At least its freezing cold which is my excuse too! I dont want to put on much weight as a result of my laziness so I might go tomorrow.

I hope you are taking care of yourself and get better soon.
