Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
cyteen · 31/03/2008 13:57

Buckets - what on earth do you do for a living? That sounds like a sweet deal to me. I work part time as am a part time MA student, and my work are pretty flexible about working from home etc. so at present I'm entertaining dreamy fantasies of going back to work after mat leave is over but doing all my hours from home...I'm sure the baby won't disrupt this at all, in any way, right?

pertelote - hooray that your scan went well and everything is fine I'm LOLing at Archimedes though...maybe you need to retaliate with a Thor or a Wolfcastle?

I'm in agreement about the pink/blue conundrum as well - it depresses the hell out of me that everything is so segregated. DP and I are getting round this to an extent, in that we plan to find out the sex but not tell anyone what we're having. That way everyone else gets to enjoy the surprise and we don't get inundated with Daddy's Little Princess/Mummy's Little Soldier grotwear until after the birth.

I'm planning to stock up on black babygros anyway, just for provocation's sake

longwayfromhome · 31/03/2008 13:57

Hello everyone, I can't remember who posted a couple of days ago about seeing movements. Thank you for the suggestion (I went and sat the sofa and stared at my stomach) - it's a bit weird but kind of cool too.

Shazza2002 · 31/03/2008 14:13

Cyteen - That is a fab idea. Although I'm the one that wants the surprise. Maybe I'll have a scan and get them to tell my sister or something and just send her shopping

It really has changed though, I remember with DD we didn't find out either. I had so much white/lemon that admittedly I did take most of it back and change it for pink But I really need to feel like this baby has some clothes

PetitFilou1 · 31/03/2008 14:13

Shazza No of course your friend can't nick a name before she's pregnant. She might never get pregnant, never have a girl or her dp might not like it. You will of course, piss her off royally if you use Evie however!
Libby Lying on your side, back to back - would be impressive to achieve that. Maybe doggie style is the way forward for you! Am sure you've worked that one out
Perterlote Archimedes? Is your dh for real? Mind you my great grandpa was called Archibald Vivian....

cyteen · 31/03/2008 14:16

www.nippazwithattitude.com/clothing.html

I'm definitely getting my kid a Fight The Power t-shirt

dizzydixies · 31/03/2008 14:20

sazzles still lovely and sunny here is you want to bring your washing round lol

Shazza no, you're not allowed to claim a name before you're even pregnant!!! Would be poor form if she was expecting and had announced it but not this far in advance lol

Freya and Evie are both nice too

pertelote my dh was watching CSI Miami when pg when dd2 and came away with Horatio as an option, between that an brandon his ideas were duely ignored after that

anyone like Phoebe and Abigail - that was what he wanted for dd2 - nice pretty names

pertelote · 31/03/2008 14:22

Shazza - I know what you mean about finding clothes. Most places seem to do a small range of 'unisex' - which seems to be mostly beige! Is that supposed not to show the dirt or something?! I have spotted a few white bits though, and some green and yellow which I think are fine for either. (But then I think pink and blue are fine for either really, it's more the frills and other embellishments that even this old radical can't quite swallow!)

Luckily I can knit - so the baby will also have a little pile of rainbow-coloured jumpers! I must start on a black one as well, Cyteen .

Petitfilou, I know. Strange chap I married! I think he had his mathematician hat on if that's any excuse...

Shazza2002 · 31/03/2008 14:28

I like Abigal, but my friend has Lily and Abbie. It is really tough. I think the baby book with a pen is the only way forward.

As for beige clothes I don't know the reason. Lot's of winter white too which I personally don't like, to me looks like you've out the whites in with the darks. Although my DD has seen the advert for them colour run sheets you can buy. She told me I should get some as it would save me time havign to seperate the washing

PetitFilou1 · 31/03/2008 14:31

Pertelote My dh is the opposite. He's very traditional and it is a struggle to get him to agree to much! At least you have scope there!

sazzles no need, will have to jet nip down and pick it all up and drop it off at the house so I can hang it - am the Queen of Scotland you know

pmsl about the knitting, my mother knits beautifully but seems to be unable to pick a nice wool - the last offering was so many different pastel colours it looked like someone had puked it up

cyteen · 31/03/2008 14:45

I'm so jealous of all the knitters, my natural laziness and inability to stick at anything means I've never learned much beyond casting on. My nan is busily knitting for this baby though, she's brilliant with the needles and apparently is sticking with creams and whites

libbyssister · 31/03/2008 14:46

Shazza, no way, you're friend can't steal Evie already. I know of a little girl called Evelyn who is an Evie. Lovely name.

Yeah petit we worked that one out already

Black babygros ha ha ha. I like these zebra stripes. I was reading an article about the Tyranny of Pink in the paper at the weekend. Made me want to have a boy... Although then you get stuck in a blue/transport/dinosaur/spaceman/digger rut...

cyteen · 31/03/2008 14:46

In the meantime, I've been passing my lunch hour looking at these fabulous alternative babygros

cyteen · 31/03/2008 14:48

libby, those zebra stripes are ACE! I read that article in the Guardian as well and it made me want to cry...I will be overjoyed if we're having a girl, but the all-pink world they're expected to inhabit does my head in (can you tell I'm the product of a lesbian feminist 70s/80s household?)

poppysocks · 31/03/2008 14:51

Good luck for all those with scans this week. Look forward to hearing all about them!

Names... It would have been so simple if we were having a boy.... Gives me a reason to torment DH with 'options' for the next 4.5 months. Pretty certain that we'll go with my sister's name (thanks for all previous views on going with this), subject to my parents' approval - Emily. However, I really feel that we should have a name or two in reserve in case it just doesn't feel right at the time. So far, Georgia, Sophie and Lucy.

Trouble is that SiL is Lucy and DD's middle name is Sophia, so they're almost certainly out. That leaves Georgia, which I love in theory but some how in practice I'm not so sure . I love things like Phoebe and Clementine, but DH is too traditional, sadly. Any ideas of alternatives anyone? Dizzy? Middle name will be Elizabeth after a relative who's recently died. I feel it rules out a lot of the more traditional names I like as it would all be too boring together so out goes the others I like like Anna, Martha, Sarah and Alice.

Sophia (pronounced So-fire) is my Mum's name and I love it, but pronunciation has been the bane of her life, just to let anyone know who's considering it. She gets as much so-feea, or sophie-a as she does so-fire and it drives her nuts. She just resorts to Sophie a lot of the time (which makes our potential choice of Sophie even worse!). A great middle name though!

Love Olivia, Evie and Freya. Just know several of each these already!

mummypud · 31/03/2008 14:57

congrats on the scan pertelote! xxx glad everyone is well today , let me know if you find unisex clothes, where i live there are zip! we think we are having a nouther girl [but just a hunch] and i was thinking that well i wont have to buy lots of clothes, then i was reminded that this baby will be a summer baby and dd was a winter one so the clothes will be wrong sizes at wtrong times of year. i would like to get a few new bits for the little pud but as i say its all very boy stuff of very girly stuff, xxxxxxx

cyteen · 31/03/2008 14:58

Hmmm...Suki Elizabeth? Jessica Elizabeth? Amy Elizabeth? Ariane Elizabeth?

dizzydixies · 31/03/2008 15:02

cyteen I already have 2 girls and neither of them are interested in all things pink or princessy - dd1 LOVES red and all things red and Dora Explorer and dd2 seems to be going the same way - she screams everytime we put her in a dress, this wedding is going to be a joy . Their room is cream with one wall having very subtle butterfly wallpaper - nothing pink about it - there are ways round it

poppysocks I LOVE Emily, its such a wonderful name. I have a very good friend from uni with this name though so its out for us.

what about Amelie or Amelia?
Georgia, Martha and Anna all nice
not as keen on Sarah or Alice
whats dd1's name or does it not matter if it 'goes' or not?!

libbyssister · 31/03/2008 15:02

Queenie Elizabeth?

poppysocks · 31/03/2008 15:15

Thanks for the suggestions. I'd thought of Amelie or Amelia, so we could get away from the EE thing, but suspect they'd be more likely to be shortened to Milly and DD1 is Maddy (from Madeleine) and that combo sounds just a little twee!

Forgot to say on the placenta issue that they said mine is quite low too but that shouldn't be a worry as apparently the uterus grows from the bottom - so what is currently at the bottom will be the middle by the end iyswim.

Poor you going back to work next week Dizzy - or are you looking forward to escaping all of us for the real world..?

When's everyone planning to stop working? I have to decide by the end of the week but it still seems ages away...

libbyssister · 31/03/2008 15:22

I'm taking seriously early mat leave. Baby's due on 24 Aug, mat leave starts on 9 June and I will probably tag on 3 weeks holiday to that... so we're looking at 19 May. woo hoo!!

cyteen · 31/03/2008 15:24

x infinity. My baby's due the same day as yours libby, and I'm looking at end of July although haven't formally worked anything out yet. I'm certainly going to be using my annual leave to extend it somewhat.

dizzydixies · 31/03/2008 15:25

good lord libby i thought I was early - am thinking beginning of july as we have a lot on with TITP Etc

poppy - will have a think for you - Madeline is lovely

libbyssister · 31/03/2008 15:28

I had a bit of a wobble this morning, thinking that maybe it was a bit too early to go... but then the summer's coming and I want to spend it with DS before he gets into all the pre-school shenanigans. And after we've paid his nursery fees I don't bring home much more than the SMP I'm going to get anyway! Maybe 100 quid? So stuff it.
