RenWoman - i have at least 3 fibroids 2 of which in last pg were bigger than grapefruits and baba was fine so i am sure you will be okay. mind you mine were next to sac but didnt push into it. your consultant knows what he is talking about i am sure.

fibroids were cause of prem labour though noone really warned me re that so i will be much more alert this time round! depends on size of fibroids though and mine got huge and basically i think there was no room left for baba to grow. in my case too i had to have c/s as fibroid blocked baba from going down but again it depends on where they are in each case.

i too was private and went for NHS scan at 14 weeks and noone mentioned the 2 big grapefruits and the golfball i had whereas consultant saw them in first min of private scan - makes you wonder??!!

For those worried about their dates - i was scanned every 4 weeks during my pg and measurements were a few days out either way each time so dont get hung up about it. Baba almost certainly wont arrive on your due date anyway!

tegan · 08/04/2008 19:40

My first day of period was 20th feb so i am 7 weeks tomorrow, which cmw gave me date of 20/21 nov but am having a scan on 7th may so my date could change.

dozymare · 08/04/2008 19:49

Evening All - good news on the scan fronts today!!!! That brilliant news girls!!!

As for dates, it seems that everyone has been put back!! AS someone has said, if you haven't had confirmation by your 12 weeks scan then go with that. Apparantly all foetuses are exactly the same size until they reach 12 weeks irrespective of parental genes....that is how the sonographer can be so accurate and say "you are 7 +2" after 12 weeks the babies then grow at their own (genetic!) weight.......

As well as updating the STATS thread, don't forget to update the PREDICTION one!!

Have a lovely evening....

DM x

mad4mybaby · 08/04/2008 19:50

tegan, that is only 39 weeks though, how did she work that out?

tegan · 08/04/2008 19:53

I think she worked it out on the fact that i only have 23 to 25 day cycles.

mad4mybaby · 08/04/2008 19:54

oh, didnt think that made a difference. Dont remember being asked how long my cycles were with ds and gp didnt ask me when i went at 4 weeks, how strange

tegan · 08/04/2008 20:03

it might of been because dh and i have been ttc for 18 months and i have been having blood tests every month to check my ovulation.

mad4mybaby · 08/04/2008 20:09

ah. I had a bowl of cereal for the first time in weeks this evening!! Quite an achievement on the food front! Laid on sofa at 4.30 whilst ds playing on floor thinking ill just have a rest before i do tea and the next minute i know its 5pm! Wierd, i didnt even feel that tired!

pinkyminky · 08/04/2008 20:32

Hi All. Fab news for all those who have had scans!
Oblomov sorry about your discomfort, hope it gets better v.soon.

Scans- All my scans done on NHS and very thorough. Nicest has been for number two as went to new local community hospital, and sonographer was lovely. Sent me out to the deli to eat chocolate so as to get baby moving so she could get a better photo for me. Explained everything she was measuring and was very thorough.
Have not had any double tests for any of my babies, I am now 37. Nuchal fold not definitive you would still need blood tests and possible risky amnio which I would not be prepared to do. 20 week scan shows up any soft markers so would give time to prepare for any possible problems when baby is born. That's my decision, anyway.
When I had 12 week tests for first baby one of the mw tried to put the fear into me, giving the impression that at my age, it was almost inevitable that I would have a baby with Down Syndrome and thrust a leaflet in my face showing a picture of someone's beautiful daughter, talking all manner of nonsense to the effect that having a baby with down syndrome would be a fate worse than death. It made me even more adamant that I would not have the tests.
Now don't get me wrong, it is everyone's right to choose and I firmly believe women should have choices- but I don't like people trying to scare me into things. But then there were a LOT of things I did not like about ST Mary's hospital and I did not go back for DD's delivery.

Re-Home Birth. Part of me wishes I had tried it. I laboured for 1 1/2 days at home before going in to hospital. I would have been at home for longer, but sadly my outcome would have been the same.
A friend of mine had her babies at a birthing centre and loved it. Her DS was born in his bubble!
Has anyone found out more about the domino scheme?

LolaBella · 08/04/2008 21:31

Renaissancewoman thanks for your advice on scans. I think if i can convince dp then we will go for the private nuchal fold scan and ask if dates match as you suggested. I'm gonna hang on until the weekend when i will be nearly eleven weeks and if i have not heard anything from the hospital then i will go ahead and book a priavte one for reassurance. Wish the NHS service around here (York) were more on the ball!!

juanitad · 08/04/2008 21:34

Hi all,

Had first mw appointment today, at last!! Now I'm starting to feel like maybe this whole thing is real after all! She told me all about the different tests for Down's, and I have looked at today's posts about the different tests, and I have to admit I'm not sure what to do. I don't know which tests to get/whether to get any at all. I also don't know what I would do if I found out there was a risk the baby had Down's, I don't know how I would feel about it and whether I would want to end the pregnancy or not. There's so much to think about!!! I guess I just need to get my head around the whole thing and talk to DH, and together I suppose we'll figure it out. Anyway, the midwife seemed very nice and friendly and put me completely at my ease, so I'm feeling good about that.

Congrats to all those who have had scans...can't wait till I get mine, whenever that may be!!

juanitad · 08/04/2008 21:35

Lolabella, meant to say to you, I am not far from you - in Leeds. I won't say which school (yet!), as they don't know I'm pg and you just never know who could be lurking on these threads!!

lackaDAISYcal · 08/04/2008 21:39

hi all. re dates and length of cycle. I always ovulate early in my cycle (around day 7 and cycle length is 25 days) and have always had my EDD moved up by at least seven days after the dating scan. They use the date of your LMP as this is the only known point in the whole shebang, but the 40weeks from there assumes that everyone ovulates and conceives on day 14 of a 28 day cycle. This obviously isn't the case for most women so they will
always take the dating scan date over your LMP.

.....and then of course the EDD is pretty arbitrary anyway as less then 10% of babies actually arrive on that date.

I just tell people sometime around the xth of Y rather than a definate EDD. saves on the annoying phone calls later! this time will be different though as my cycle had been every seven weeks since DD was 9 weeks old so I have no real idea of my date. I might even be due in October!

We've opted for no screening tests at all. It wouldn't change the outcome of the pregnancy for me, but I know I would worry if told I had a 1 in whatever chance. I had them done when I had DS six years ago (when my maternal age had me at a pretty low risk anyway), but two miscarriages changed how I felt about it all so we didn't with DD either.

I told the MW today that I wanted to go for a VBA2C and she was less than impressed. she said that they (the hospital) wouldn't let me, but I don't think they can actually force me onto the operating table! I told her I'd read the statistics and was aware of the risks. She said she'd do a consultant referral for me, but she huffed and puffed about it for ages. I need to be armed with as much info as possible before that appointment.

lackaDAISYcal · 08/04/2008 21:41

juanitad, I'm now wondering if you were the lady who came out of the MWs room just before I went in, or the one who was sitting waiting when I came out

pinkyminky · 08/04/2008 21:46

lola For what it's worth, I think you are right.Normal antenatal scans only need to be done between 12 and 16 weeks, but I always think that if you're worrying about something, it's best to get it looked at, so I would go for a private scan in your position, too. On the up side, if things are really busy in York you'll have a fab postnatal social scene going on come November! ( But you may have to put DS/DD's name down for local school as soon as he/she is born!)
juanitad Didn't mean to have a big rant before. It is all a big dilemma. We just talked about it and came to the conclusions I have stated. I'm sure you'll find the right way forward for you.

I was really unlucky with the manner of a lot of my care from St Mary's and have not encountered it since.

LolaBella · 08/04/2008 21:47

Junitad - i teach in a Leeds school too!!For the same reasons as you however, i won't reveal which as i too have not informed school yet How bizzare if it is the same one, they would have a shock coming

pinkyminky · 08/04/2008 21:51

lack Who made that MW queen of the world? Is there a big medical reason for her opinion? Sorry if I've missed something from an earlier post.

LolaBella · 08/04/2008 21:52

Pinky good point i had not thought about that! My bub will have a busier social life than me at this rate
I'm not worried about anything in particular, i'm just inpatient and as, like most ladies on here, just want to see little bean a.s.a.p. Seriously can't wait until im 15 weeks!

pinkyminky · 08/04/2008 21:54

If I had the cash, I'd go for it.

dozymare · 08/04/2008 21:57

Oooohhh - how funny if you are all at the same school, same midwife....I really think there MUST be some ladies on this thread who live near each other....FWIW..I will be having my LO at Epsom General...anyone else?!!!!!!

As for testing, I have to give blood a week before my 12 week nuchal scan that will also give an indication to Downs. Never had to do this before and everyone who is PG in my area does this as well as the scan. To be fair, I thought every 12 week scan was for nuchal testing????????

I think I am very naive on who gets what, where and when!

Night night, off to bed now!

juanitad · 08/04/2008 21:58

This could turn out to be a small world!! Lacksadaisycal - what time was your appt? Mine was 3.30-4.15....there was no-one with the MW before me, as she told me she had been doing paperwork for the past hour, but don't know if anyone went in after me!! Wouldn't that be weird!! Anyway, once I have told all and sundry about being pg (don't know why I am getting so obsessed about people lurking and realising it's me!!) I will let you know whereabouts in Leeds I am and which GPs practice I go to, and maybe we'll find out we are at the same one!!

Lola - that would indeed be strange if we were in the same school, but there is only one psychology teacher at my school and I don't think she lives in York. Still the world of Leeds secondaries is very small, we are bound to know some of the same people!! Looking forward to revealing all once we are past the danger time!

Pinkyminky - it was useful to read all the posts on the Down's tests, as it wasn't something I had thought about before. I think I have read about just about everything to do with pregnancy, but for some reason I never really looked in to that bit, so I found it interesting to see what everybody was thinking...I'm sure it will help me come to the right decision, so thanks for all the info and ideas.

lackaDAISYcal · 08/04/2008 21:59

pinky, she's an old school mw and definately of the "once a section:always a section" school of thought. she also wittered on about it being less than 24 months since the last one therefore a greater risk of rupture, but as far as i know your body is pretty much knitted back together after three or four months and that the risk of rupture is no greater after two sections than it is after one

I'm hoping for a much more enlightened consultant

lackaDAISYcal · 08/04/2008 22:02

i was in with the MW at 1:30 juanitad

whichever practie you are with though, it looks like there might be a few of us for a mini leeds/yorkshire meet-up at some point in the future
