Also, has everyone made up their minds about Down's screening?

We've decided not to have any of them (serum screening/NT scan/triple) - the screening is so inaccurate (for example High Risk can be 1 in 250), that I think it just adds worry for the sake of it. If you get a High Risk result, the only way to know for sure is to have Amnio or CVS with a 1% miscarriage rate - and any baby that is miscarried is almost certainly healthy.

Not trying to put you off or push the issue but make sure you have read about it and make the right decision for you. Some midwives assume you will want screening, but it's entirely your choice.

Pinkali37 · 08/04/2008 17:29

I think i will have the scan if it is offered to me. I'm 29 so would hope I wasn't at high risk but then again who knows.

SoExcited · 08/04/2008 17:29

I'm pretty sure I'll go with a homebirth, even though it's my first. It does depend a bit how far you are from hospital - I am about 10mins. My midwife said that if I want more pain relief or there are any problems they can transfer me in no time anyway. In terms of safety, as long as you are considered low risk, homebirths are as safe or safer than hospitals - as you are more relaxed you are less likely to have complications, and are allowed to take things in your own time.

SoExcited · 08/04/2008 17:32

Pinkali - I'm 30, so similar situation, but know of a few people who got really scared by "extremely high risk" of 1 in 80 or so. One worried the whole pregnancy, the other had amnio, and both had perfectly healthy babies. I think i'm more comfortable with not knowing...

Oblomov · 08/04/2008 17:40

I'm 35 and I bet that I will have another c section. Fine with me. Heres hoping it goes as smoothly as last time.
Want to hear a funny story ?
So, with ds, I have my c section booked. But I start contracting, so Prof, says get here now, remember Kings is a good 2 hour drive for us. I call dh home and we drive like the clappers. I am asking him how often my contractions are coming.
We get to kings. I am examined and am already 5cm dilated. He measures my contractions. I minute apart.
I say to dh " I thought you said they were 5 minutes apart"
His reply : " I didn't want to worry you "

I later have my very succcesful c section.

Don't worry , it is the only dozy thing he has ever done, but what a time to do it !!!

Emmanj · 08/04/2008 17:40

I havent had my scan letter either lolabella, i rang up the scan apointments line tathe hospital and i got a similar thing to you...they are way behind! Its so annoying isnt it?!!
Will be intersted to see how u get on wit the private scan

Renaissancewoman · 08/04/2008 17:42

Lolabella - I don't think you should have to pay for both scans as the scan itself is exactly the same. You will see baby on both. The measurements they take just differ. So on dating scan they measure crown rump length and compare that to norm charts to assess age of your baby. For nuchal - they take a measurement of the the fluid at the back of the neck. Again they compare it to norm charts if its high it could means downs and more tests would follow. At some places they do combined nuchal and blood tests and age statistics to give you a more accurate assessment of whether baby might have downs.

If I were you I'd go for a nuchal test and while you there ask if they agree with your dates based on size of baby.

The private scans I've had have been a lot more thorough than NHS ones and I've gone for them when I've wanted quick reassurance and extra levels of attention to ease my anxiety. It was worth the money in both cases.

MummyAnnabella · 08/04/2008 17:58

hi all my how this thread keeps growing!

Had private scan today and am v relieved to say all is well. there is indeed a little jelly bear in there and with its little heart pumping away!! such a relief as i thought a week or two ago i may have had a missed m/c but thankfully not!

so now i can relax (a bit!) and stop saying to DH "if everything is okay we'll do this or that....." and actually start to say "so I'll be x months pg then when we........"

RenWoman - i too have fibroids! last time round they got huge and baba was okay well apart from 2 months early! what effect have yours had??

Renaissancewoman · 08/04/2008 18:09

I had 2 kids, nothing ever said about any fibroid. Then last August had a m/c and went private. Consultant spotted it and said possible cause for m/c but couldn't say for sure. Was anxious about this pregnancy although no worrying symptoms but wanted an early scan for reassurance and went back to the same consultant. The same fibroid was there about the size of a golf ball and pressing onto the yolk sac, you could see it was causing the yolk sac to be crescent shaped rather than round as it should be. He said that this was a concern for as long as the fibroid is bigger than the baby. Once baby outgrows it it will be OK and should no longer be a worry. I'm 10 weeks so baby will soon be bigger than it. I have my NHS scan in 2 weeks and am just ticking off the days at the minute...

Was your early baby anything to do with the fibroids?

bubbaz · 08/04/2008 18:17

Congrats to everyone else who has had a good healthy scn today.
pinkali my EDD is November 10th which is what I thought (I'm quite glad cause they put me back a week with DS and he was 16 days late so by my reckoning it was about 3 weeks and I knew when I got pg after having mc)but it has all its bits etc.

RE the homebirth thing, My midwife tryed to persuade me to have one with DS which didn't work out in the end as I was induced. She said people felt more comfortable in their own home and tended to get less stressed out which is better for baby.

Wow, you lot have been busy chatting today! Congrats to all those who have had good scans.

I have been giving alot of thought to the birth during the last week. I am fairly certain it will be a hospital birth (although hate hospitas with a passion and have spent far too much time in them for my liking), although if babe arrives faster thank his/her brother did (1 hour 29 minutes), it may very well be an unplanned homebirth/car birth! I was umm-ing and ahh-ing between a waterbirth or a dry birth in the one of the 2 birth unit rooms as I was told they are like home from home. I love the idea of a waterbirth, but was really hoping that baby would be placed on my tummy and would wait for babe to wriggle/crawl to my breast to feed (I have seen a video of this, it's amazing!). Now I am really torn. At least I have a long time to think about it, lol!

i dont agree with the age the sonographer gave me today... Am annoyed.. nut i know i just dont see how i can be only 6+1. Far as im concerned im 7! Otherwise that puts me in december!

The dates just dont add up

MrsMattie · 08/04/2008 18:59

mad4mybaby - I'm dipping in and out of Nov 08 and Dec 08 at the moment, as have been told two different EDDs. Think I'm 6+3 but will go with what I'm told tomorrow at dating scan I think..

Ash80 · 08/04/2008 19:02

hi mad4mybaby, I also was told after my early scan that the dates i had were wrong i, thought it was 7 weeks but apparently it was only 6 weeks and 3 days.... It was soooo small, just a small dot , but at least got to hear a heartbeat

SoExcited · 08/04/2008 19:05

Useually they only change your EDD if the scan is more than a week out from your date by LMP. If it's less than a week I wouldn't worry too much - baby will come when it's ready...

My date has been changed by 4 days just because I worked it out online (exactly 40 weeks), GP did it with a wheel and didn't allow for leap year so got one day later, midwife used a different wheel and got another 3 days later?!

I'm happy though, as i'm right at the cut off for qualifying for my occupational money, so a few days later is better!

SoExcited · 08/04/2008 19:06

I suppose it depends when you actually ovulated how many days old the baby actually is...

serendippity · 08/04/2008 19:06

You two can't leave me, i would be the only one left at the end of november!
I doubt we will have the nuchal fold test- i didn't realize it is not available on the NHS, which is weird as i'm sure i had one with dd that was very definatly on the NHS! Am only 26 so i shouldn't be high risk anyway but will have to chat with dp further about it i think.
Midwife appointment went well, i didn't hear a heartbeat as it's too early, but she seemed nice and helpfull and didn't just brush me aside when i told her about my 6 hour sickness in labour with dd and how the hell can i avoid it this time round?!
Must go and bath dd now!

mad4mybaby · 08/04/2008 19:06

ok sorry if this is TMI for anyone but it is bugging me.. You are supposed to go from first day of last period so for me was 19th Feb (7weeks today) now 6+1 days ago i couldve conceived as BD the night before.... which would you go by period or bd?

Oh and on the home birth convo i want a home birth but dh not happy with it, i may go with that or other option is birthing centre which is in the hospital, will decide nearer time.

SoExcited · 08/04/2008 19:12

You have to go by your period date, as you don't know when the egg was actually fertilised - can be 5 days after bd! I was using an ovulation predictor, so I know which day I ovulated so in theory could work from that. But realistically the 12 week scan (or earlier) is the most accurate.

My dh thinks homebirth will be no more traumatic for him than hospital - I wasn't sure if he'd be alright with the idea. I think he feels like it will be easier for him to feel relaxed, and if he needs to take time out, it's a better place to be. Also, I really want access to a birthing pool (not necessarily for the actual birth), as it's supposed to be the next best pain relief to epidural. Only way to guarantee access to one is to have the baby at home.

mad4mybaby · 08/04/2008 19:14

yeah i want a water birth this time round. Wanted to last time but got to hosp 8-9cm and there just wasnt time plus got a bit scared! I really dont want to tear this time (2nd degree with ds) as it really affected how i was at the time and apparantly water birth can help prevent tearing

serendippity · 08/04/2008 19:16

mad4- your last period was exactly the same as mine- i'm 7 weeks today as well

mad4mybaby · 08/04/2008 19:25

it was a v wierd period which was why i had an early scan. I was spotting for about a week before (unlike me)
