My ex was diabetic, he was so used to it he'd eat more sugar if he'd gone over his normal amount because apparently it works backwards or something?
Maybe someone can explain that to me?

KnitterInTheNW · 12/03/2008 12:03

The only way I can explain that is by saying he was very ill-informed and, umm, not very clever? It can sometimes work the other way, like if sugar level goes very low in the night when you're asleep, your body can release stored glucose to bring it up again, sometimes I wake up with a stupidly high sugar level and that would be the only explanation. But eating more sugar to bring it down? Nope, wouldn't work. Only extra insulin/doing something energetic would do that.

VictorianSqualor · 12/03/2008 12:06

I can't remember what he said(I was 17!), something about your blood sugar exploding at a certain point and your body working overdrive to sort it out or something.
So if we were out and he felt funny, whether it was high or low he would eat sugar.
Thankfully it rarely went either, I hated the thought of having to stab him with one of those epipens

KnitterInTheNW · 12/03/2008 12:16

I've never heard of that! I hope he came to his senses or now he'll be in a lot of trouble. Practically everyone goes though a 'teenage rebellion' stage where you think if you ignore it, it'll go away, and as a result of mine I've had to have eye laser treatment to zap stray blood vessels on my retina, which if left untreated would make me blind. Fun.

EllieG · 12/03/2008 12:16

I think smoked salmon is fine. And since we've all got this far munching on it I wouldn't worry. Think in theory shouldn't eat but I have eaten everything you aren't supposed to and all OK. Moderation key.

Bunny - am due 17th April. When are you?

KnitterInTheNW · 12/03/2008 12:18

Sorry all, but bleargh to smoked salmon! Haven't eaten any meat or fish for 20 years and not going to start now! I did treat myself to veggie sushi when I went to the trafford centre last week. I want more now though!

Denny185 · 12/03/2008 12:22

Hello all, good luck with your scan today knitter.

Cant stop, I have a day minus children so MUST tidy and clean.

ThePFJ · 12/03/2008 12:27

ThePFJ stands for The Peoples Front of Judea.
Which er... isn't actually my real name.
No, I am not a political activist, just a monty python fan.

My real name is actually Lara.
Not croft though.
I have a green top and big boobs, just no big gun. I really would look good with a big gun though....

ThePFJ · 12/03/2008 12:38

P.S. Hope I didn't upset you moomins.

sagitta · 12/03/2008 13:34

Can't stop crying today. Any tips on how to achieve happiness?

KnitterInTheNW · 12/03/2008 13:40

Oh Sagitta, crying days are horrid. When I'm having a day like that there's nothing that will stop it, but find that finding something to do to distract me helps a bit. I'll still be crying but getting something done at the same time! Are you able to go and have a bath and read a book for a bit?

ThePFJ · 12/03/2008 13:43

Awwwww Sagitta! Hugs!
I find happiness at the bottom of a packet of minieggs.

Try here and here

XXX

KnitterInTheNW · 12/03/2008 13:53

I just realised Sagitta, doing something with the baby stuff always makes me feel a bit better, even just making lists of what still needs to be done.

Bet no one can guess what I just had for lunch? Need to go to asda on way home from scan to get more supplies.

Denny185 · 12/03/2008 13:53

Cant stop you crying but can make you say ouch, someone on March thread had 11 lb 11oz baby last night.

sagitta · 12/03/2008 14:15

Thanks! All the niceness is making me sadder . Thanks for the link, PFJ - I now realise I want a kitten, not a baby

I saw the big baby news - what a whopper...

sagitta · 12/03/2008 14:18

Thanks for the tips knitter. It'd be much quicker to make a list of what I 've done so far.

1.) Got cot, three pairs of baby pyjamas and a snowsuit out of loft. Done.

That's it.

EllieG · 12/03/2008 14:20

((((hugs))))) to sagitta. Have a nice bath and a cup of tea. 'Twill be OK.

DSD asked if we could have a baby monkey instead of a baby the other day as she thinks they are cuter told her no, not unless her Dad was more ape-like than had previously thought. He is a bit of a throwback - has ginger hair and very long arms....

christmaspixie · 12/03/2008 14:21

at 11 lb baby!!
PFJ, my name is Lara too!! And I haven't met many adult Lara's in my life! (Also please stop mentioning the mini eggs, I've bought some for dd's birthday party on Sunday and now I can't stop eating them!!). Oooh I think I have pregnancy sweet tooth! (Prays that the baby is not converting all the sugar in to fat and growing to 11lb)
VS, very interesting about your chart. Dd was 8 days over due and born on 75th level, which I think corresponded exactly to her 20 week scan. (Going off now to look at new notes instead of working )...........

EllieG · 12/03/2008 14:21

x-post there sagitta. Stop doing jobs now and have a cup of tea. And a biscuit.

christmaspixie · 12/03/2008 14:23

Oh hello Ellie too, and cups of tea all round to those feeling teary today (I only have to hear a soppy song and it sets me off)....

KnitterInTheNW · 12/03/2008 14:35

I'm setting off for my scan in half an hour. I'm convinced he's still breech because I can't feel a head between my legs, should I be able to if he was head down? Am 36 weeks and is my 1st. I just want to know what's going to happen in 2 weeks!!!

moominsmummy · 12/03/2008 14:38

PFJ - not offended at all (what would I take offence at?) just busy at work so have been following chat but unable to post until now - LOL at the PFJ - are you sure you're not the same as the Judean People's Front?? (splitters!) sorry your boiler broke down how rubbish for you

Ellie - thanks for that lovely cuppa this morning- just what i needed.

Knitter - good luck with scan

Sagitta - sorry you're feeling down - I made the mistake of watching pride of britain awards early in this pregnancy - I usually cry at it so with hormones as well I was almost sick with all the near-hysterical sobbing!! Hope you feel more sunshine-y soon

I am v.happy today as have just found out that we are getting cavity wall insulation and loft lagging done for FREE!! After DH first got diagnosed we spent ages being all glum but now I'm onto a phase of seeing what benefits and discounts we can get 'cos of his Disability Living Allowance - just need to see if we get surestart maternity grant next - nothing like milking the system!

BTW if you know anyone on DLA or anyone over 70 yrs old they can get the cavity wall and loft insulation down for free too

bunnyrabbit · 12/03/2008 14:39

Back from lunch.

Ellie, due on 5th if buglet stays put that long.... not sure I'll have much time for mumsnet when I'm at home with DS1 though. Shall miss talking to everyone.

Poor Sagitta, have you got a nice book to read or DVD to watch? I find Films always help me cheer up.

Good luck with your scan knitter..

... and oowwww to 11lb baby!

BR
