o merglemergle - so sorry about your crash.
Has the cramping/bleeding subsided?
Keep taking the chocolate - I always take it for a headache!

PamiNativity · 09/12/2004 12:19

Oh Mergle, really sorry Sad Hope it all works out ok for you. I think that if you really have to take painkillers then paracetamol are better than nurofen, but I've dredged that up from my preg-brain so it's probably better to do a bit more research.

I'm wondering if I'm going to have to tell the 2 girls I work closely with - we have an Xmas party tomorrow night and I have already said that Saturday is going to be really hectic so I'm not going to have a big night. We then have another do on Thursday night which I could probably get away with, but then we are going out for a long boozy lunch on Friday, just the 3 of us and I don't think I'll get away with it!

PamiNativity · 09/12/2004 12:21

HT, I remember now, sorry! Am I right in thinking that there is a possibility that the baby could grow really big too quickly? Presumably that's why they have to check you all the time.

Bagpussinboots30 · 09/12/2004 12:42

Mergle, sorry to hear about your news. I really hope it's all OK for you.

My bump had it's first christmas card yesterday, dh must have told one of his friends, which is actually OK since we are going to a party at their house on Saturday.

Mommyd, I replied further down but have had the same as you re: sickness. Not sure why but I reach the magic 12 weeks next week so would expect to start feeling better soonish.

Went to mothercare thinking I would find some nice trousers and a top this morning but came away empty handed - they have most of their winter stuff in the sale and now the clothes are spring ones! Will have to have another look over the net this afternoon.

Well, as I have been typing I have polished off my lunch, so I suppose I will start to feel sick any minute Sad.

pinkmama · 09/12/2004 12:43

Merglemergle, hope you are ok. I saw the Gp yesterday and asked if anything I could take for sinus pain and she said up to 8 paracetamol a day is absolutely fine. Have had this advice before in other pgs. Never been told not to take them.

I really hope you ok, you sound quite calm.

merglemergle · 09/12/2004 13:26

Hi, thanks for the support. I am quite calm now, this is mainly due to chocolate stupor Grin .

Have a great time everyone at all the Xmas parties. Ours was yesterday, everyone commented that I wasn't drinking but I think they were mainly too pissed by then to put two and two together.

On the up side, I passed the breathalyser yesterday with flying colours!

hoxtonturkey · 09/12/2004 14:47

hope all is ok merglemergle.

diabetes & pregnancy is 1 long slog. you have to have good control at the beginning (1st trimester)or else there's an increased risk of birth defects (i don't think that's a very pc term....), & then you need to have good control in the last trimester so the baby doesn't get too big. so they're doing the right thing seeing me often, but i used to work for diabetes uk & this is my second baby so i know what i'm doing. sorry, am ranting....

went to see the midwife today. hospital have managed to lose some of my blood tests so i have to have yet more done. and it took ages to get all the results they did have, so by the time she took my blood pressure it was through the roof. so now it has to be checked by the gp AND i have to go back to the midwives next week AND i have to go to the hospital this afternoon for another blood test. i just want everyone to leave me alone!

hoxton, you look after yourself, got my boots yesterday and will email you about meeting up soon (i'll do the travelling, so you can rest up!), xxxx

Eulalia · 09/12/2004 17:16

Oh mergle how awful - hope you get better soon and the scan is OK.

Hoxton - sorry to hear about all your tests.

Well my back is much better today :)

MommyD · 09/12/2004 17:33

Sorry to hear your hassles HT - I have white coat blood pressure and it is a total nightmare. Go anywhere near a doctor and bp goes through the roof - doesn't matter how many times I tell mw/docs that my bp is high because THEY are taking it - it makes no difference. I have been admitted on the basis of one crazy bp reading. I HATE having my bp taken as I know there is a good chance I'll end up admitted when pg. Doc took it on Tuesday - I simply made and appt to start the ball rolling. She took it and it was 170/98... great start!!
Anyone got any tips for bringing bp down just before you are having it taken...., it drives me nuts. Take it at home and it is around 130 or 140/80 which is almost acceptable.....

Bagpussinboots30 · 09/12/2004 17:45

MommyD, mine is the same. My last three readings have been quite high but then I worry about them being high and they are IYSWIM?.

I would be interested to hear any suggestions about keeping it down too as this is really worrying me at the moment. My last reading was 140/82 but they are usually around 130/70. I fell fine most of the time apart from when I'm rushing around or feeling sick so not sure what the problem may be. mw has been really sympathetic so far though.

Speaking of which mw has just phoned to say I have an appointment with the consultant at the hospital on 20th for referral to St Mary's in Manchester for foetal echo so I am pleased about that. Looks like they may fianlly be on the ball for once.

hoxtonturkey · 09/12/2004 17:55

i definitely definitely get stressed about having my bp measured & that pushes it up. glad i'm not the only twitchy one out there! strangely, it also makes a difference if i know the person who's taking it - hopefully that means my lovely practice nurse will get a sensible reading next week. i kept telling the midwife that it wasn't pre-eclampsia, i'm just a basket case, but she didn't believe me. did concede there was only a trace of protein in my urine & that is almost always due to contamination. then told me she got pre-eclampsia with her 3rd pg only - great!

have calmed down a bit now, ds & i have just shared a mango in front of the tweenies.....

Cosybear · 09/12/2004 22:44

Hello ,
Sorry to come in here as i'm not due anymore but
thought maybe could help Mergle .
mergle - sorry about your accident - what a shcok you must have got - i was in a rear shunt accident a couple of months ago (before had been pregnant) and am so terrified in jams that someone will go into the back of me - I really hope everything will be alrightand the bleeding stops.
I am miscarrying just now and was in a lot of pain at the weekend - i ended up having to speak to a doctor at the maternity unti at the hospital as Boots had given me Solpadeine (paracetamol & codiene) and also Nurofen - as they had seen twins on my scan they said the Solpadiene is fine to take but not the Nurofen (it's the Ibuprofen in Nurofen i was told to avoid in case i'd only miscarried one and the other was ok)
Paracetamol is fine to take during pregnancy anyway - i was led to believe ?? correct me if i'm wrong anyone.?
I hope this helps - would phone the EPU to ask if you're still unsure.
Take care
Cosybear
xx

lovinit · 10/12/2004 00:20

Oh Dear Cosybear, I am so saddened to hear your news. I hope that you are being well looked after emotionally and physically . Keep your spirits up and let us know how you are doing.

Mergle Mergle, I am crossing all my fingers for your scan on Monday.

I am coming up to 8 weeks (I think ) and feeling tired still but aside from that no other symptoms. I am craving for yummy food though, but that is also because at this time of the year, it is displayed everywhere !

Hope everyone is well.

By the way re PARACETOMOL ... my sister who is a GP has just told me that there is new evidence to suggest that taking it regularly is not safe, but that occasional use is OK ... I had always thought that it was the only thing you could take.

OzJo · 10/12/2004 02:38

Merglemergle, lots of sympathy, and fingers crossed for Monday. MommyD...you're abit stuck really, unless they've invented some kind of B/P taking machine that can record the readings...Even then you'd have to sign some kind of something in blood to swear it is your B/P with the lower readings, and not a mates, etc. We nearly didn't get residency in Australia because my B/P would go through the roof for the immigration Drs...in the end there was just a nice Dr who said " oh you've just got whitecoat itis" and passed me anyway. The health care people are always going to be ultra twitchy about high B/P....Hypnotherapy might be worth a try...maybe take the anxiety out of the equation. Good luck!

PamiNativity · 10/12/2004 09:09

I also have a problem about blood pressure - definitely white coat syndrome! When I went for my 40 week check-up when pregnant with dd2, the midwife said to me, as she was putting the monitor round my arm "why don't we just give you a quick sweep seeing as you're here". My blood pressure shot so high that I was kept in hospital until it went back down again! Stupid woman for saying that just as she took my pressure.

merglemergle · 10/12/2004 12:27

Thanks everyone esp Cosybear. Is there a chance it might be ok for you? If so big XXed fingers.

Apparenty this stuff about paracetemol came out 2 weeks ago. I actually have taken some as the pain is really bad. I'm starting to think that anything except kale and wholemeal bread is considered BAD for some reason so I give up.

MommyD: How confident are you that your blood pressure is ok using the at home readings. Just because if it really comes down to it, and you are confident that your blood pressure is ok, they can't actually make you do or take anything to lower your blood pressure. I'd take some readings over a few days eg morning and evening for a week, including one where you have a bp test at the doctor, and then show the readings to the doctor. I'm sure I've heard of someone doing this with sucess but I can't remember who.

On the other hand, if its stress/hospital related and you're planning a hospital birth (just making an assumption here), could it be a problem then?

But probably your best bet is to stay away from doctors!

merglemergle · 10/12/2004 12:29

BTW the bleeding has stopped and I feel like crap so I'm quite hopeful its all alright. Thanks all again.

Bagpussinboots30 · 10/12/2004 13:21

Mergle, you news sounds encouraging Smile. Cosybear big hugs to you (((((()))))) as well.

MommyD, I have just googled blood pressure monitors, and Medisave have them for about £35 for a wrist one which seems good. They also have one that takes your readings and interfaces with your pc to record them too! Maybe if it becomes a problem for you, you should think about investing in a cheaper one at least. Then you could prove to your GP that you haven't got high BP all the time. Our midwives here will come out and take BP readings at home if you have a high reading at the clinic. The trouble with that is that before they arrive I spend hours tidying up and making the place look presentable and then end up with a high reading at home too! I can't win.

HT, I hope your hospital appointment was OK yesterday.

All quiet here. Have just sent children to bed after they refused to eat lunch and most of it has ended up on the floor. I think they are a bit overtired. I was very proud of dd earlier as she managed to walk home from the school all by herself without getting in the pushchair. I was getting rather worried that she wasn't going to give up her buggy easily (she's 2.4), although we have one with an optional toddler seat, I really don't think I want to use it for the new baby as it is quite large so have been fantasising about small prams all morning since Grin.

Off to clean kitchen floor now before sickness set in for the afternoon.

MommyD · 10/12/2004 14:19

Thanks all for advice re: blood pressure. I invested in an omron machine for blood pressure last pregnancy and took it a couple of times a day. Reading always between 120/70 and 140/85. I showed my readings to the m/w or consultant when my hospital readings were through the roof but each time they were very sceptical and in fact told me off (!) for taking readings at home - that was THEIR job. I suppose they cannot afford to take any chances.

Glad you are feeling like crap merglemergle - a good sign....

I was worrying about not feeling sick yesterday - been feeling lousy today - so glad Grin

Still thinking there are two in there! - Can't get that thought out of my head....

PamiNativity · 10/12/2004 14:24

That sounds like good news Merglemergle. Will keep my fingers crossed for you.
I'm still having to eat all the time to keep the nausea at bay. I'm sure it's raising a few eyebrows in the office, although my excuse is that I am clearing out the cupboards prior to moving and keep coming across rice cakes, banana chips etc which need to be eaten up!

merglemergle · 10/12/2004 18:10

They told you off MommyD?! For being interested in your health and the health of your baby? Thats outrageous.

I was so lucky with ds. I was booked for a homebirth and the community midwives were completely fantastic (bar one-another story). I can't imagine being told off!

It must make it a lot harder if the attitude of the doctors etc is "we know best". As I say, with ds I was so lucky, they just never had that attitude. They were focussed on making sure that I had the confidence to insist on a homebirth-thats what they all prefered attending!

Sympathy and good luck. If it gets serious I think there are organisations like ?AIMS out there to advise you-but it really doesn't sound like its at that stage yet.

merglemergle · 10/12/2004 18:11

& thanks paminativity. I've spent all day puking and trying not to sleep so I'm getting a lot less worried.

pinkmama · 11/12/2004 10:34

Pleased to see your posts mergle, fingers crossed for Monday, but all sounds very positive!

Sorry about your news cosybear.

When will your scan be MommyD so you can find out the number in there?!

Eulalia · 11/12/2004 15:48

Cosybear - I hope you feel better soon. Sounds awful :(
