'ere we go, guys!

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
Egg · 27/02/2008 08:55

Hmm that's my prob though, if I ignore them they eventually cry themselves to sleep, so I think they are now sleeping too much in daytime maybe. Argh.

SireeDubs · 27/02/2008 10:20

Daniel James Henry arrived on Sun 24th after a (horrible) failed induction for 2 days and an emergency section, which didn't prove to be at all scary. Just back from hospital,, all well, but NEVER again!!! He's worth it though.

Quick silly question though. I'm having to bottlefeed (long story) and lo doesn't seem that interested in food - will take maybe 40ml of a 6o ml feed every 4 or so hours. Having said that, he's just managed 50ml. He's 3 days old now - am i giving him enough? My instinct says don't stress, he'll find his way and he'll soon pick it up. He had my colostrum, so he's only been bottlefeeding less than 24 hrs.

Am stress merchant aren't I?

gingermumi · 27/02/2008 10:42

Congrats Siree! Not sure about bottle feeds, i think there's an amount according to baby's weight but can't remember what it is! I'm sure another bottle mum will know - i would think at this stage you don't have much to worry about, he's very little! If you're still concerned ask your mw when she call in next.

Egg - thanks for support will let you know how things go. I do try to play with ds (but i don't have a toddler to entertain) i put him under his baby gym and he watches the animals/rattles and sometimes bats them (by accident i think. I also sing to him (poor lamb!) and do round and round the garden etc. he cries if i put him in the bouncy seat for long so i dont do that as much. when I did have a baby and toddler combo i played much less with the baby and tended to do chores or play with dd1 when dd2 was asleep. I also used the time when dd1 was at play group to do things like swimming with dd2. We try at routine but TBH like you i do what fits in.

Sleep - yes despite my efforts ds seem to sleep better during the day especially when he's out! He slept for 5 hours one day and then can only manage 3 hours at night (and sometimes he just lays and winges for the 3 hours so i suspect he's awake then!). I don't know the answer but it will get better!

Jaysthird · 27/02/2008 10:51

Siree, dont stress!! ( easier said than done i know) the first few days they can be a bit picky with taking food, am sure it will be fine and as you said, trust your insticnts! Speak with your HV and MW if you have any concerns, am sure they too will re assure you!

Sorry to hear things didnt go to plan for you, but at least alls well that ends well

Egg, when i had DS, DD was only 14 months old, but i used to think the same thing, i guess what you have to remember is that the new baby, isnt old enough, yet, to understand 'playing' as such so if they are contented to lie in their chair, let them watch you play with the older child... this is actually enough stimulation for them and can actually wear them out! Do what feels right for you

Dont know about anyone else, but that earthquake last night, might have shook my baby about a bit! Have been having light contractions since about 9, now i know , as most of you do, that this could be all or nothing, but i am hoping its all, am only one day over so i realise things can stop and start, but i want this baby in Feb...and that only leaves a few days left!!! Some big contraction vibes are needed!

Check in later

OneHandedTypist · 27/02/2008 11:06

Do any thing w/ the baby that isnt physical care? Er, no, altho' he doesnt like being put down even if asleep.
Hand 2 any1 else willing 2 cuddle, tbh! Newborns r quite dull, imho, byond making googoo eyes at them.

morningglory · 27/02/2008 11:19

DS2 is more awake than DS1 was at this age, and thus will actually look interested in his baby gym for 5-10 minutes a day (I think it would be stretching it to call what he does playing). Besides that, he sleeps in his bouncing chair, eats, pukes, poos, wees as soon as his nappy is off, and sleeps. He seems slightly interested in his big brother, who is not very interested in him. I don't expect him to do much more for a couple months.

I didn't feel the earthquake last night, but DH did. I remember another one about 4 years ago, which I did feel. Guess I'm not that concerned...I did live in San Francisco for a bit, so I'm a bit jaded about earthquakes.

Off today to see how much Baby weighs. As of last week (2 weeks), he had put on a pound and a half since birth. He has to have put on more weight, otherwise I don't know where the hourly feeds between 6-11 pm are going!

OneHandedTypist · 27/02/2008 12:12

...Another California girl here who perversely enjoys the rare quake I get to feel in Britain.

Which baby gyms do you ladies have and would you recommend? (says she who is going shopping tomoro).

SOOO... who else has chronic sticky eye to clean up daily? MW was threatening to send me to GP for antiBs, but now I am just cleaning it more diligently.

AND DS got weighed again yesterday, that's 4x in 11 days. At least he's gaining an ounce or so a day, which seems to make 'them' happy. I think I will avoid seeing HV until 6 week check, now, at least. The officialdom stress on weight gain was getting to me.

Going to slink off for a sleep, now. DS was wailing thru a nappy change at 12:30am this early morning... he was just going back off to sleep when the earthquake struck so of course DH & I couldn't help chatter excitedly which woke baby up again, didn't it? Blech....

Egg · 27/02/2008 13:33

Quickie to say congrats to Siree and that my two were only on 20ml for about a week and then suddenly jumped to about 40ml, but were feeding every 3hrs at that point. They were weeny though. I think it sounds like Daniel is doing fine. My two certainly didn't follow the "guidelines" on the side of the box and still don't (Fat Jake has way too much now...). As long as Daniel is not screaming to be fed for two hours before you actually feed him then I am sure he is fine. If you are offering 60ml and he leaves some he has obviously had enough, if you were only offering 40ml and he drained it every time then you would need to offer more.

Does that make sense .

Congratulations to the new arrivals!!

Egg - not doing anything with ds2 here but then again he does get to do ds1's stuff (bedtime stories, park trips, bus rides, songs at the library etc) which has to beat me talking crap in his face.

I really think that newborns just want to be warm, held, dry and fed. There is plenty of time for all that stuff later. Overstimulated babies are no fun at all so it doesn't pay to be too entertaining!

OHT - they are obsessed with weight!! As long as the nappies are dirty and they look ok, I wouldn't worry about this too much (maybe easy for me to say with my giant children) but it does seem to be the marker of progress in their eyes whereas I am not so sure.

Dh snuggled up to me in the night for about 2 seconds before he muttered, "ooh, you smell of sick" and rolled away again. Don't think I will be needing that chat on contraception any time soon!

rozzyraspberry · 27/02/2008 16:29

Hi all. Have added lo's birth details below.

Congratulations to pobletsmum and sireedubs and anyone else I've missed. Hope those of you who are still pregnant don't have too long to wait now! Enjoy days without a newborn while they last - I am not enjoying night feeds! Andrew is really good and only up a couple of times but ds1 and ds2 get up between 6 and 6.30am anyway so the disturbed nights are killing me!! (bit overdramatic I know.

Had a few really down days at the start of the week but must just have been hormones/tiredness as I'm ok again now. Andrew seems to be settling a bit better in the day now although until around 7pm he won't sleep in his bed for longer than a few minutes. Don't even try to put him down now in the day - usually just put him in the carrier so I can get stuff done.

Siree - I think most babies are quite sleepy in the first few days and don't take much food. Andrew was like that the first couple of days and then had a feeding frenzy for the next couple.

Egg - babies love to watch you and their siblings - there's not much you can do with them in the early days other than feed, clean and cuddle. If they're happy sitting watching lucky you!!

Take care all!

Onehanded- my baby gym was a present from my colleagues, it came from asda and comes with a play mat. It costs less than £20. I hang other things from it with the hook-things that go on a shower curtain (had some spare but you can buy them for about a pound). A favourite seems to be a 'bug' from babiesrus, who incidently do a baby gym (without the mat) for about £10. Hope this helps.

beansprout · 27/02/2008 17:16

This is our baby gym. I got the "travel" version which zips up and folds away as we are in a flat and don't have much space, so I didn't want anything too big hanging around all the time.

tyaca · 27/02/2008 21:47

congrats sireedubs!! and good luck jaythird.

i am in an exceptionally foul mood. feel free to skip the following rant ... so bored with this now. know i'm only a few days over but feb has truly been the longest month of my life. i cant DO anything and there's nothing to do. everytime i try to do anything i just get so tired. i desperatley want to get my body back and start the next bit of life. am bringing poor dh down cause i'm such a boring moaning cow. all i can think about tomo is how i wish i could just sleep thru it as i cannot be bothered. i just wish i even had the faintest hint - a twinge, or a tweak or a show or ANYTHING. DH keeps thinking we may stull have a 29th feb baby, but i really cant see how i can get from this -nowhere-near-having-a-baby mode to having a baby. my cervix has to open still FGS - that can takes daaaaaaayyyyyyyyyyyssssssssssssssss

ok, rant over. i am going to sob quietly and dream of cocktails made with both champagne and whiskey.

sorry.

Congratulations to Popletsmum and Sireedubs!! just posted a big cozy message, and then bloody PC froze and lost it all, and have to go now and bath Alex before her 10pm feed, Grrrrrrrr!!!!! so will just say thanks for all lovely happy birthday messages, sympathy to all with a newborn and toddler... (Alex was completely horrible last night!) and lots of love to all ladies in waiting... end is in sight, girls!!!! post properly soon.... sorry!
lolo x

morningglory · 28/02/2008 08:26

Morning! Hang in there tyaca and all others fed up of waiting. The end bit of pregnancy is truly tedious, but you are almost there!

DS2 was weighed, and he only gained 18 grams last week. It was a different scale, but stlll...WHERE THE F@#K IS ALL THAT MILK GOING??? He probably is puking most of it up, which is a tad frustrating. I really should turn a blind eye to numbers, but I guess it concerns me because DS1 was such a healthy grower, and jumped centiles rapidly after birth (9th to 25th in 3 weeks). This one seems to be as long as DS1, just much skinnier (still just above the 2nd centile!). I know I'm being silly and really should calm down and suppress my results-oriented nature. I don't expecct dramatic results, a gentle increase would suffice. Perhaps his tinyness is what makes me anxious. If he was a bit bigger, I'd be less worried about his fragility. Well, I'll just continue as I am doing, and hope he gains this week.

CountTo10 · 28/02/2008 09:47

Tyaca - I reaaly do feel for you cause that's exactly how I felt by the end with both pg's but especially this one. I just got so fed up with not having any freedom over what I could do cause of a wacking great big bump to contend with!! Plonk yourself in a bath with some fave music and either go for a massage or get dp to? Watch some dvds or read a book do anything that you like to do but maybe wont get to do once bubs arrives. I did that and I'm so glad I did. Other than that - a nice bag of mini eggs and some big online cuddles x

Onehanded - ds1 had really bad sticky eye and we just constantly had to wipe it and clean it. It was a nightmare in the mornings sometimes. It did clear up a while. Are you breastfeeding still? If so, it's quite good to clean it with your milk cause of the antibac stuff in it. What I would say is for the first year whenever ds1 had a cold, he did have gunky eyes again.

Egg - I was thinking about this the other day, felt like I've just been plonking ds2 into his chair/crib all the time but to be honest, ds2 has only really been starting to be more awake this week. We;ve attached toys to his chair that he can look at and I talk to him all the time to include him in what ds1 and I are doing. At this stage, just watching what you are doing and listening to what's around them is enough.

Well after a few days of ds2 being a bit of a nightmare at night, I gave him some gripe water last night and after some awful nappies (!!) he's totally settled and is being fab. He appears to be more comfortable about sleeping at night and actually slept for 5 hrs solid last night!! We've had to remove the moses basket and now use a crib that our friend lent us and he much prefers that so fingers crossed he just continues to sleep well!!!

Hope everyone is well x

CountTo10 · 28/02/2008 09:50

Tell you what we have got and I wonder if others with siblings are having this - especially around the 3-4 mark, are you getting particularly bad behaviour now? Ds1 was an angel up to last week and now he's just being a pain without being mean. My mum came over at the weekend to sit with ds2 so we could have some one to one time with ds1 which calmed him a bit but he's now having nightmares, getting up really early in the morning, being naughty. Feels like he spends most of the day being told off or in the naughty corner!! What's everyone else doing with this kind of behaviour?

Egg · 28/02/2008 09:51

Thanks for all advice on NOT doing anything with babies. I wasn't worried but now they are more awake, or should be more awake, I feel like I needed to make an effort, or otherwise they cry or drift back to sleep. DS2 is not impressed with being under the activity arch... He loves it sometimes but I think he needs to do more poo so is upset. DD is asleep, but had joined in the crying for a while back there! DS1 at nursery .

Morningglory, we had a similar thing with the scales when babies were 2 or 3 weeks old. We all knew they had gained well, they felt bigger, looked bigger, were outgrowing clothes etc, but scales said DD had lost 2oz and DS had only gained 1oz. However the next time they were weighed they had gained a huuuuuuuuuuge amount so I think the time before had been wrong. Still, they levelled out anyway. No idea what they weigh now and wont get them weighed again til 12 March. DS2 feels like he weighs about a stone but I think prob more like 9lbs!

Better see if I can cheer him up!

Egg · 28/02/2008 09:53

oh Count! We had that too. DS1 was pretty good but then went all haywire a few weeks back (remember the monitor throwing incident). He is lovely again now, it didn't last. He kisses and cuddles the babies and all in all is better behaved than he was in the last few weeks of my pregnancy (when I had zero tolerance).

CountTo10 · 28/02/2008 10:00

Oh good, I don't need to sell him just yet then Yesterday he was driving me mad, he was like my shadow and I actually stepped on him 3 times as everywhere I turned there he was!!! I just feel really awful that I have to keep telling him off etc. Ds2 must hate the sound of my voice already!! Ds1 was in his room crying and we had to be really tough and leave him and then in he marches hen his light finally comes on "mummy I was crying and asking for you and you didn't come in and I was sad and crying" - how guilty did I feel!! That's the second time he's said that to me recently!! Just got to grin and bear it.

Egg · 28/02/2008 11:25

Oh I have often thought of ebaying mine . I do feel really bad if i don't go to DS1 immediately when he is crying in bed, although it was getting out of hand so we had to ignore him again and he is sleeping better now, but he was sobbing "mummmeeeeeeeeeee" at 6am this morning, then quiet again, but when he started up for the second time I felt too guilty to leave him. Often I can see he is insecure as he just comes over all quietly and whispers "cuddle". Usually when I am feeding a baby and have no hands free so I have to balance the bottle with my chin so it stays in DTs mouth, and put an arm round DS1's shoulder.

Time to feed DS2. DD fed and finally asleep under the activity arch after a bout of sobbing.

Can't WAIT til all babies are hatched and we can start a new thread with a proper list of all hatchlings dates and names and weights etc.

Must ask again, WHERE IS MINIANDME???????????????????????????????????????????

Just time for v quick post. Morninglory midwife weighed ds3 on day 9 and he was 8lbs 5. HV weighed him the next day and he was 7lbs 14. Sure he hadn't lost almost 1/2 lb in one day so just goes to show the difference being weighed on different scales can make!

Have to rush to get ds1 and ds2 from nursery now.
xx

Did she post on here? I've not seen her since DTs were born! I wanted to compare notes and see how she is getting on.
