morning all! where to start????
congrats to all the new mummies and babes, and good luck to all those apparently contracting!
I figure I have about 30mins to relate the birth story before Bethan wakes up so here it is.
my waters went Sun morning about 7am. I'd had a couple of contractions from 3am. we went to the hospital and they confirmed my main waters had gone and sent us home hoping things would get going or if not to return Tues morning to be induced. Sun and Mon I contracted on and off all the time, sometimes regularly at 10 min intervals, other times more infrequently. it seemed mainly I was regular through the night meaning of course I got very little sleep. the tens machine was a wonder though!
we waited for the magic three contractions in 10 mins and never got there so went into the hospital at 8:30am Tues morning. I was pretty scared by this point and having no contractions at all. was examined and found to be 4cm! we thought great, gonna go quick from here! started drip and got on with tens for a while, then tried gas and air which I didn't like at all. re-examined and was only 6cm which was horrible news so went for some meptid which was really good - just helped me relax and get on with it again. second stage to 10cm took 7 hours! pretty tired by now but started to push... and push... and push... and push for 3.5 hours. my heartrate started to go up, so did LO's and the midwife was increasingly concerned for us both. doc called and arrived with ventouse (sp?) but we were so close. an episiotomy, two more pushes and she was out, absolutely healthy, 9lbs at 11:28pm. I on the other hand was out of it, kinda like an outer body experience. I started to bleed and the room filled with people as I lost 1.5 litres in about 10 secs. the staff were great, just got on with injections and stuffing pads everywhere and then stitching me up. poor DH was holding Bethan looking scared and but it was got under control.
anyway - total labour from membrane rupture was 64.5 hours. at home now and shattered! the blood loss has delayed my milk coming in so we are having to supplement feeding with formula by cup (DH an expert). been pretty emotional, felt rubbish that my milk isn't enough, Bethan has lost 10% of her birth weight, although as she was a big 'un this hasn't been as critical. the house is visited by multiple midwives daily (all very supportive) but makes you wonder when things will settle down a bit!
extremely long post! sorry!
hope everyone is well, will try and catch up again soon... thanks for listening! x
