Typing, reading posts while contracting at the same time. The wonders of multi-tasking!

Well done all the new mums.

Thinking of you all who are having/have had sweeps. I said to the Dr doing it, "If you want me to move up the bed, just ask me", cos it felt like she was moving me up from the inside! That was after (in this order), i said to her, "I apologise for swearing, but get your fing hand out, it f&^ing hurts, but i'm sorry for swearing!", I didn't yell and was v polite, but i told them i would prefer not to have another one.
Internals aren't so bad, not after having brazilian bikini waxes before i got pg.

Well, we see what happens next. Maybe i'll post soon with baby next to me...

lailasmum · 26/02/2008 09:12

Hello all, No baby yet for me, Am now 11 days over I think, actually maybe 12 my brain has given up. Am going in tomorrow to hospital for monitoring. Then possible induction on friday if babe doesn't turn up by then. Am a bit stressed and fed up as I had such a quick and easy home birth last time, will feel a bit weird if I have to have a hospital birth for second baby, but hopefully he will make an appearance before then. I had taken it for granted it would all be the same.

Does anyone know how induction normally works-like is there a less invasive method or is it all super medical? What are the options, am getting a bit confused. My midwife said she could do a sweep but didn't see the point as she felt they only worked if baby was about to arrive anyway. I think I am likely to be really quick when I get going as my dd was born in 3 hrs and my mum had it down to an hour for her labours with my brother and sister. Th were though both of them were 14 days overdue, wondering whether to put off my induction for a few more days after Friday if there is nothing wrong with either of us. My midwife was very pro me waiting till 14 days at least.

widgetsmummy · 26/02/2008 10:39

morning all! where to start????

congrats to all the new mummies and babes, and good luck to all those apparently contracting!

I figure I have about 30mins to relate the birth story before Bethan wakes up so here it is.

my waters went Sun morning about 7am. I'd had a couple of contractions from 3am. we went to the hospital and they confirmed my main waters had gone and sent us home hoping things would get going or if not to return Tues morning to be induced. Sun and Mon I contracted on and off all the time, sometimes regularly at 10 min intervals, other times more infrequently. it seemed mainly I was regular through the night meaning of course I got very little sleep. the tens machine was a wonder though!

we waited for the magic three contractions in 10 mins and never got there so went into the hospital at 8:30am Tues morning. I was pretty scared by this point and having no contractions at all. was examined and found to be 4cm! we thought great, gonna go quick from here! started drip and got on with tens for a while, then tried gas and air which I didn't like at all. re-examined and was only 6cm which was horrible news so went for some meptid which was really good - just helped me relax and get on with it again. second stage to 10cm took 7 hours! pretty tired by now but started to push... and push... and push... and push for 3.5 hours. my heartrate started to go up, so did LO's and the midwife was increasingly concerned for us both. doc called and arrived with ventouse (sp?) but we were so close. an episiotomy, two more pushes and she was out, absolutely healthy, 9lbs at 11:28pm. I on the other hand was out of it, kinda like an outer body experience. I started to bleed and the room filled with people as I lost 1.5 litres in about 10 secs. the staff were great, just got on with injections and stuffing pads everywhere and then stitching me up. poor DH was holding Bethan looking scared and but it was got under control.

anyway - total labour from membrane rupture was 64.5 hours. at home now and shattered! the blood loss has delayed my milk coming in so we are having to supplement feeding with formula by cup (DH an expert). been pretty emotional, felt rubbish that my milk isn't enough, Bethan has lost 10% of her birth weight, although as she was a big 'un this hasn't been as critical. the house is visited by multiple midwives daily (all very supportive) but makes you wonder when things will settle down a bit!

extremely long post! sorry!

hope everyone is well, will try and catch up again soon... thanks for listening! x

widgetsmummy · 26/02/2008 10:45

new pic on profile too - the smile is wind and a lucky shot!

Egg · 26/02/2008 10:55

Big congrats to poblet!!! Can't wait to hear more, find out name, see pics etc .

Good luck to tallulah and lovemymum for today. Hope to hear of some more babies arriving later on. Good luck to lailasmum for the next few days!

widget bethan is so beautiful! OK so the smile is wind but it's lovely!

Happy birthday lolo.

And finally, tallulah, you did NOT sound like a right bunny boiler. You had every reason to be upset, without even bringing into account the raging hormones. I shout and yell at DH every weekend and he is the loveliest husband around, he just bears the brunt of my emotions. Yours has been naughty in the past and had left you home alone when you are due to give birth, and even though he is hopefully good as gold now you were sitting there alone with nothing to do but THINK ABOUT THINGS..... Always a nightmare at the best of times.

Right, I have a crying DD who is not due to feed for ages so I am going to bath her to keep her busy for a while.

Sorry I have not been around for a day or two much, so hope I have not missed anyone's birth!!

OH god! Just read the rest of your post widget! That is one seriously LONG labour!

DS1 lost over 10% of body weight at first as I struggled to feed. He was 7lb 8 at birth and went to 6lb 6 or something. With the DTs I was having to cup feed (before i decided to give up on bf), we became experts too but my god it is tedious! Esp when you get one baby done and have to do another! Good luck with sorting out bf so you can ditch those cups!

tyaca · 26/02/2008 11:52

mornin' all and welcome back to the fray lovemymum. sorry you;ve not brought us news of a baby, but if he she is doing just fine then why rush i guess?? hope you enjoy your extra days - dont spend it all doing laudnry!

oooh, tallulah, i'm so jealous. know exactly what you mean about getting in a wimpy panic. my tooth/ear ache of the last few days has nearly broken me, and made me so nervous about labour. keep wondering whether perhaps labour not actually as painful as earache (earache is not nice you know!)

widget, lovely extra bethan pic and cheers for taking the time to write everything down. sounds like a tough three (four?) days, hope you are feeling recovered and hurrah for feeding expert DH. do not get hung up on the milk thing at this point, it seems like you;ve already been supermum this week.

egg - hello there, hope all's going well with the baby and child juggling.

must go, hello to all, off for a sweep. spent last night doing a search of old threads on MN re sweeps and was horrified at how quickly they can set things off! need to take a look at hospital bag in case i dont come back.... [wistful emotcion]... jaysthird, think i found a thread of yours when you were jaysecond and about to have a sweep!

MW decided to do sweep next week now .. gutted but slightly relieved as flat could do with a really good clean first.... shame tho as i was hoping to try out some of Lovemymums top tips to charm MWs during the procedure

lailasmum - glad i can strike patio-laying and dishwasher cleaning off the induction methods list! both seemed like too much effort... re induction, worth taking a search for old threads as there's usually a wealth of knowledge out there. good luck for tomo and hope all works out well. dont envy you being so overdue.

also found out that my MW is a MNer... says she doesnt post but i reckon thats a ruse! its v funny to meet a MNer in RL -- usually people just stare at me blankly when i start talking about controversial threads of the last weeek!

happy DD jays...

our hatched list is so long now. we need the definitive girl/boy count. must do that one of these sleepless nights. prob a better way to spend my time and energy than playing internet poker

egg - oh for putney! am in the slightly less lovely streatham. not quite so green but my street credentials are solid - DH is already talking about taking LO to breakdancing lessons once she's old enough ... i always wonder what happened to nikki84 as she's also SW london, DD today.

right... going to attack the windows on the north side of our flat. they are sticky from some kind of pollen that i've been unable to shift. BUT a helpful MNer in housekeeping reckons washing up liquid will do the trick. here goes....

OP posts:
Lucyand2 · 26/02/2008 16:08

morningglory - I'm glad that it's not just my LO who has started doing this! I am covered in sick constantly at the moment as DD2 likes to pull back and gaze at me after she's fed then vomit all over my boob and her face (TMI, I'm sorry!)
She hardly did it for the first few weeks so I'm confused.

Ginger - I really hope everything gets sorted out soon, that must all be so stressful for you!

I've actually managed to get her to sleep in her bedside cot the last 2 nights and she actually sleeps longer when she does. I even had to wake her this morning (she still did her usual fussy hour between 4 and 6am though)
I even managed to use my freedom sling for the first time today - can't get the hang of the cradle position but managed the upright position first time. When we got back from the park I couldn't remember how to get her out again!

gingermumi · 26/02/2008 16:31

Thanks for support, will keep you updated, hope to hear from hosp soon, have to contact doc friday if i haven't heard anything. Not so worried about me (not at all really), just want to know ds is ok.

Congrats pobletsmum - have you thought of a name yet?

Haven't had time to read all posts yet and someone is waking up! Have to go, good luck to those (hopefully) producing today!!

Gill79 · 26/02/2008 16:49

Hi all - I'm lurking still - still struggling to read faster than the posts arrive - and most days manage to switch the PC on but never get as far as actually using it!

Hope everyone is getting on well with their babies and enjoying them! DS is one month old today he's been celebrating by giving me a particularly hard day. Just NOT going to feed him every hour as he seems to be asking! Must be loading up for another growth spurt.... we did have one lovely hour sitting in the conservatory in the sun and he was most contented as he simultaneously threw up all over both of us repeatedly whilst filling his nappy in the most alarming way!

Thinking of all those still to go.... hopetihngs happening for you soon Tyaca - since you asked contractions for me were just period pains for the first 12 hours or so that slowly became more defined - you'll know for sure once you can notice a definite start and stop and also that they build and decrease in intensity. Good luck and looking forward to exploring some Street classes for our babies together although might be a bit of a norf sarf fing goin on innit.

Egg · 26/02/2008 18:27

Shite ginger managed to miss responding to your post. Poor you and DS, hope he is ok (and you, but more of a worry for him ). Please let us know what docs say for both of you.

Tyaca there are some nice parts of Streatham, I shall just presume you are in one of those. I used to go to the ice rink there when I was small! And the cinema in fact. And into Woolies for pick n mix sometimes.

Lightwind was also from putney, but she seems to have disappeared.

I have met a few people in RL who say they know MN and I do sometimes think of them reading my posts on here but presume they have better things to do with their time (like us, aherm...).

As for routines. I had DS1 in a routine (not that he kept to it) from She Who Must Not Be Named from about 4 weeks. Am not trying with DTs yet as to be honest I kind of feed them when it suits me for that particular day as much as poss at the mo. Ideally I want them to feed at 6/6:30am, 10/10:30am, 2/2:30pm, 6/6:30pm 10/10.30pm and then see how they go through the night, but this does NOT fit in with DS1 and his routine in the evenings, as he normally has a bath between 6 and 6:30 and although can do later, it takes at least half an hour to finish each feed so by the time I actually get both babies fed DS1 will not be in the bath until something like 7:15pm. Hmmm. OH IF ONLY I ONLY HAD ONE BLOOMING BABY!!!!!!!!!!!!

Anyway, off to bath DS1 now (late). He has been such a good boy today .

Egg · 26/02/2008 18:35

And yes, I am continuously covered in baby sick... They puke all the time. I do mean all the time. During a feed. After a feed. While asleep. Before a feed. During a change and so on... Normally not on me (although sometimes) but always over themselves, esp if in clean outfits. Also like pooing everywhere. And somehow all three DCs can do simultaneous poos.

DS1 still not in bath. HE thinks he needs a poo now.

omy · 26/02/2008 19:22

Hi everyone! I have missed a few days and just caught up with everything! Congratulations to everyone who has hatched - though I notice no-one on my birthday - 25th! Never mind. Widgetsmummy - not surprised you are shattered! Well done that girl!

MIL has gone home so I have to do my own cooking now! Building works are progressing well - I have moved into my lovely new bedroom - but am missing DH as he would rather get some sleep than cuddle up to me and LO - humph! The reason I haven't posted is that I have been helping DH with the painting - no longer can plead pregnancy to get out of it!

Lo is great but pukes about once a day - huge pukes - a real waste of milk I say! She swallows air and is rubbish at burping - so its puke time. I try so hard to get her latched on properly - I have even watched online videos of how to do it and followed all the instructions! But she just doesn't have a very strong suck!

Good luck to those imminently popping!

princessllama · 26/02/2008 19:32

lailasmum, expect you've read up on it all now, but re induction-the least invasive is the stretch and sweep. they must all have diff opinions, my obstetrician and mws must have done about 5-6 times over 10 days for my first pg. really uncomfortable, but i was keen to avoid more intervention. next up from that is the gel pessaries which they do every four hours, four attempts is the maximum (often accomp. by stretch and sweep) and usually with breaks so that you can have a sleep at night if nothing has kicked off. -i had 4 of these and suddenly felt like all hell had broken lose after 4th with really strong contractions close together (no break really). after this if dilation still not happening enough they can break your waters-yup, had this too and that really got things going.but, most effective of all for me was the epidural -relaxed massively and dilation rapidly happened-all pain free aahhh, lovely . they reduced it enough for me to stand to push the baby out when i got to 10cm. have to say from moment epidural went in whole experience was magic-so don't panic if you end up with one.
on other hand am really hoping for no induction this time as want to feel like i've managed to go into labour on my own.

princessllama · 26/02/2008 19:39

would you believe dh has just called to say (in casual voice) 'love, why don't i pick up a curry on the way home'. a little to keen me thinks-'doesn't have anything to do with you panicking about me going into labour over the budget does it? -pretend shock from dh then'how did you know'. honestly, men!never mind sympathy vote, just the work.
obviously don't mind either as v keen to give birth.
yoga teacher recommended rocking back and forward alternated with sitting back with a bump onto heels. will be doing that alot this evening.-far rather that than her other suggestion-an all night sex session-can you imagine , once is only just a bearable thought and even then i'm def. trying the curry first.

Getting good at typing one-handed whilst bf and using net now. Health visitor came today and weighed LO he's put on 3lb in 2.5 weeks so I guess he's getting enough milk down him!

Happy birthday lolo, hope you had a good day x

Congratulations to Pobletsmum and good luck to Tallulah

Widget - hope things settle down for you soon

Gill- I hardly ever seem to have the time to post on here either LO wants feeding so much.

Sick, poo, sick, poo and more sick and a bit more poo!!! How ds2 has actually put any weight on is beyond me the amount that comes out of him!!! Yes we too are a household of baby sick. I'm just praying that it doesn't turn into full blown reflux as that'll drive me mad again!! Took ds to the hv today (after 2 canx clinics grrrr) and ds2 has got a little hernia bless him.

Routine wise I like a bit of structure but gf is just too much for me. We've been doing on demand to get ds2 settled but now I need some sort of pattern to the day. I've started trying to do the baby whisperer which is more a pattern than a timed schedule but it's proving difficult as ds2 has now decided that his favourite time of day to be awake is 8-10pm!!!! Bit of a nightmare but got to perservere. Anyone else's baby sleep particularly different at night to day?? He sleeps beautifully during the day, anywhere for a good 2hrs at a time yet at night he just does not seem able to settle. I wonder if it's the moses basket but I just don't know if I want him in his own room yet and the cots to big to go in ours. Anyone else in a different room yet - am I just being a big girls blouse??!!

Congrats to all the new babies, hope they're very yummy!!

Right, question for those of you with a toddler and newborn (or who have been in the situation before)...

Do you actually do anything with the baby other than feed / burp / change / put to bed / bath etc? I mean I basically don't play with my two at all as if I am not doing any of the above "chores" I need to spend time with DS1 who gets neglected so much while I am doing all of the above. So they just get left either in bouncy chairs or in cot whenever they are not eating basically. Not sure what else to do with them as don't want to just hold them as DS1 gets a bit jealous...

Routines? I've forgotten what one of those is!
Egg - I couldn't help but giggle at your description of the sick, I know it's not funny to be clearing it all up but I'm glad I'm not the only one.
The smell of baby sick is my perfume at the moment and my bed seems to be covered in sick & chocolate thanks to DD1 and DD2. I have to move all the random toys and sicky tissues before getting in at night The bedlinen was clean on at the weekend!

Best of luck to all those ready to pop and extra special wishes to arhian xxx

Egg - I tend to leave DD2 in her bouncy chair when she's not feeding or crying. At first I tried to play with her but was met with a confused frown when I presented her with a miffy rattle. DP still tries, bless him.
Luckily when DD2 starts on her usual evening fussy time DP is home to entertain DD1 as she needs lots of attention, I don't think DD2 minds being ignored as she's mostly conked out.
