Thought I would take the plunge as I seem to have killed the previous thread . Will put a link on the old thread so you know where to come!

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

My scan was private, so I'm not sure whether hospitals offer a dvd. Nuchal scans do measure the amount of fluid behind the baby's neck (with more fluid being linked to a higher risk) and are combined with a blood test that picks up a further number of downs cases (together the scan and bloods are meant to pick up 85-90% of downs cases). I think they are more commonly recommended for older mothers, but as I tend to worry over not knowing something, the reassurance potential was a big draw. If the news was bad, I would want to consider all the options and be prepared in any event so I didn't hesitate in having it. Can understand how many people would rather not go looking for problems, though.

lollipopmother · 19/02/2008 14:53

Digitalgirl speaks sense, you'll scare yourself to death if you start self-diagnosing! Take my stance, don't go looking for trouble as you're sure to find it when you're talking about pregnancy!

lollipopmother · 19/02/2008 14:55

Oh when I said 'go looking for problems' I don't mean don't have the test, I just mean don't go trying to interpret the results yourself off Google otherwise you'll put yourself in an early grave with all the worry!

mustsleep · 19/02/2008 15:13

please some one firmly tell me off for practically ordering a pushchair already (it's far too soon!!

mamamufin · 19/02/2008 15:14

Hi Guys
I have been watching the thread from afar as am the usual icky self.

Kel I am 28 and did not get offered the nuchal scan last time as I was too young. However, everybody has to be offered it now. (All to do with equality I think) I have choosen not to have it as the risk is minimal anyway.

Pregp 0.6mm is massive when you think its only 5.6mm to begin with. Try to relax and quit the googling!

Gracie I too am suffering from the "lack of perceived happiness syndrome" I have turned into a total moaning cow. Of course I am really happy but cant express it right now as I am far too ill.

As for dreams- I was being swept out to sea in a massive wave last night. I thought I was sinking but after a stuggle managed to survive and save an unidentifyable person (spell?) too, So was a hero. God, know what that was all about its been on my mind all day.

Good luck to all of the scans tommorow, I am sooooooooooo ious.

mamamufin · 19/02/2008 15:17

Sorry mustsleep I am not ignoring you. I cant stop looking at stuff myself but not ordered yet. Just think so much advances in 6 months. New designs, technology so better off waiting than being last season! .

Sunshinemummy · 19/02/2008 15:19

I'm having the combined nuchal and blood tests as my age (37) means I already have a risk factor of 1/227. I'll get another risk factor from the nuchal itself, and then a combined risk factor from that and the blood tests. Depending on that score, I then might get offered a CVS (where they take a sample of placenta) or amnio, where they take a sample of amniotic fluid. Both procedures have some risk of miscarriage but will give a definitive answer as to whether the foetus has downs or another neural tube defect.

Agree with DG, PrePG - step away from the Google. It won't help you in any way.

Sunshinemummy · 19/02/2008 15:22

Providing all is well on Thursday I'm buying my pram at the Baby Show on 1st March, as they usually give a big discount if you buy at the show.

PrePG · 19/02/2008 15:26

Thanks everyone - I know I'm being stupid!

mustsleep Aw, go on, have fun shopping! I wouldn't order anything yet, but nothing wrong with narrowing it all down! In fact, you're better off fantasizing about prams than thinking about your symptoms (to which I can attest from earlier post!!!) And totally agree with mamamuffin - new stuff comes out all the time!

I was given info about the nuchal from Kings (in London) and it seems that it's pretty standard unless you DON'T want it.

Anyone else sometimes feel that the little one is going through a growth spurt? I know growth is meant to be fairly steady at this point, but today I'm completely exhausted, feeling slightly cramping and STARVING immediately after I ate my lunch...it seems like growth spurt is the perfect explanation!

lollipopmother · 19/02/2008 15:30

mustsleep - When I first found out I was pg my partner went mental and instantly measured the 'nursery' for furniture, got catalogues, searched the internet, chose everything he was going to get until I finally told him he was being a prat and to stop jinxing my 6 week old baby! Once he got over the initial joy of becoming a daddy he instantly went to the superstitious ideas that I have, and now won't let anything baby related into the house before 7 months, a complete about-turn from what he was like when he first found out. I have, however, already chosen what pram I'm going to get, but I'll not get it until I'm about to burst.

potxola · 19/02/2008 15:31

first of all congratulations Expat. You have done it. Now enjoy it !!!!!
On March the 3rd I will have the 12 weeks scan and they will also do the Nuchal. They just measure what they see.
In my case, because of my age, I will also have the amnio at 16 weeks. It is scary because I could miscarriage then.
With my son,I also had the amnio and it was painful and I had to stop looking at the needle at the screen, because I would get nervous and my son would move a lot making it impossible. I remember paying 80 pounds to get the result in 4 days instead of the normal 2 weeks. We just did not sleep or eat till I had that phone call. The dr. told me my baby was fine and I remember saying thank you and good bye and she saying to me, don't you want to know the sex?.We choose the name the following day and I forgot about the pain and the waiting. From then on I loved my pregnancy. I hope I can get to the 16 weeks this time as well. Sorry about this. I suppose I am nervous about tomorrow.
My husband will have to wait outside with our 3 yr old son.
Thanks for being there for me as well girls.

Sunshinemummy · 19/02/2008 15:38

Good luck for tomorrow Potxola.

mamamufin · 19/02/2008 15:40

Potxola could you not just take your son in the room. Its a magical experience and at three he will be taking things in but wont understand properly, Take haribo for distraction. If this is not allowed surely there will be a friendly nurse around to supervise your son. Its well worth asking and it sounds as if you could reallt do with your dh with you x

kel78 · 19/02/2008 15:51

I too have had to take my 3 year old on both of my scans as I had no one to have her because we havent told anyone and partner has had to work. Dp wanted to come but because they have been scanning me every 2 weeks he is waiting to come to my 11 weeks scan which is then my last. Anyway she was brilliant and there were other kids as well.

potxola · 19/02/2008 16:02

I am only 10 weeks and 5 days pregnant, that is why we don't want our son to be there, just in case, and he is a lovely handful, he would not stay with a nurse. We have not told him, but I am sure he knows something from hearing me talking to midwife and friends
I would be fine. I might ask the dr, to go and get my husb. at the end if everything is ok.
We will see.

hopefully · 19/02/2008 16:12

Gosh, you can rpactically feel the tension rising as everyone gets closer to their scans and begins to worry about REAL stuff! Not that we didn't have real worries before, but now we have even more of them. Yay.

I think I may have to give in and buy something if everything is ok tomorrow. Although not sure my bank account is up to the strain at the moment!

theowlwhowasafraidofthedark · 19/02/2008 16:13

Good luck potxola, I hope all is well for you tomorrow.

I feel really bad to moan about this while so many of you are suffering wiht morning sickness, but I am soooooo fed up with being constipated. It's just not possible for me to eat any ore fruit - there's no more space left. At the moment I'm only managing to go once every 4/5 days.

Argh, someone please advise me!

Sunshinemummy · 19/02/2008 16:15

Gosh owl I'm not as bad as that but am down to once every other day, which is not fun.

ipanemagirl · 19/02/2008 17:37

Hello Sept expectants! I can't believe I'm still pregnant but I appear to be and apart from feeling breathless when I do too much, I feel basically fine. Can't wait til scan to reassure me that all is well.
I"m not coming here much as i'm trying to forget about being pregnant really, we still haven't told anyone at all so I'm very impressed. Going to see my sister soon, I don't know if I'll be able to keep it from her particularly if we go swimming, I'm already if not showing, looking pretty FAT around the waist!

feelingpositive · 19/02/2008 18:14

Ekk - hopefully and potxola tomorrow morning is scan time for us and I am getting nervous. I wasn't anxious at all with DD 12 week scan, but after mmc last year, I am nervous about tomorrow and I will only be 8+4!

Congrats to all that have had successful 12 week scans, i hope we can all join you soon .

x fp

mustsleep · 19/02/2008 18:40

i know just think in 4 weeks we should all be happy and glowing

when do you start to show properly i have a bit of a baby belly at the mo but just think that it's fat and bloatedness (unfortunately) can't wait to get to the stage where you have a bump (although when i get there i'll change my mind!!

carrieon · 19/02/2008 19:24

I can relate to the vivid dreams thing too, which sometimes leaves me waking up exhausted which is not a good way to start the day. I think today has been my worst yet - had to ring dh and get him to come home a bit early and give dd her tea coz I couldn't stand the smell of it and was just too tired to look after her for a moment longer. I'm 8w 3d now and I'm sure I'm starting to show - if I do up the button on my jeans it digs in so much it makes me feel even more sick
Sorry, having a large attack of self-sympathy. Nothing a good 12hr nap won't fix I'm sure...

imoscarsmum · 19/02/2008 19:56

Hi all. Not been around much as been away with work. Glad everyone seems to be progressing nicely. I still have to pinch myself that I've been so lucky to get pg but DP did go a bit crazy over prams at the weekend. We didn't buy anything - scan is on 3 March, so I can't wait.
Had my full booking in at hospital yesterday - they took about half my body weight in blood!

My bp is up but I'm trying to stay chilled.

Interesting comments re nuchal folds etc. I'm having the blood test at 16 weeks, but the fold test is not on NHS so i thought £200 was a bit much when there's nothing I can do about it anyway - what will be will be. Just want blood test to hopefully give me some confidence.

Well, off to eat chicken and pak choi stirfry (eating loads carbs at moment - feel sick if I don't).

splishsplosh · 19/02/2008 20:01

theowl - my mum always said prune juice couldn't be beaten for curing constipation. It doesn't sound that tempting but it could be worth a go??

someone said, sorry can't find who, that they don't see their midwife until 24 weeks, having seen them at 7 weeks - that sounds like a huge gap - are you supposed to see your gp in between or do they just leave you to it? Here it's gp at 8, midwife at 10-12, think midwife again at around 16, then gp 2 weeks after 20wk scan.

My dd keeps waking up at ridiculous times, 5-5.45am. How can I pursuade her this is totally wrong? It makes me feel shattered. Perhaps i should go to bed now...

boobs seem less sore when feeding dd, so getting that old paranoid feeling, but I did think I was going to have to run and be sick this morning...

I too struggle to feel happy. Luckily dd is a delight, but 1st anniversary of my mum's death is coming up on Thursday so think that's why I'm feeling down. Even cried reading "Guess How Much I love You". dd will think I am potty
