Good morning all you creme egg lovers ( and those weird ones amongst us who don't appreciate them)

Good luck for all the scans coming up this week, and next.

dylansluckymum - thanks for that push chair link, we ordered it at the weekend and it came yesterday and I am really pleased with it. The colour is fine, more yellow than gold! It's brilliant that it came with the pram attachment too.

I had been thinking about doing what aberdeen and ernest suggested for a change mat and just getting some sort of travel mat perhaps with some pockets to put nappies and all the essentials in, then I could just chuck that in any bag or on it's own in the pushchair for travelling light. That one from John Lewis looks pretty good.

I had my midwife appointment yesterday, as far as she can see everythings fine, in fact when she listened to the heartbeat she was shocked about how much the baby was moving about (I'm thinking my anterior placenta is doing me a favour cushioning me from a lot of the kicks, although I am still feeling quite a lot!) so it must have got DH's fidget gene! She also rang the hospital for me but typically the key person wasn't there, she did get me their name and direct number so I can try again today but her and the midwife she spoke to at the hospital thought it was odd that they would want to do a colposcopy on me during pregnancy, apparently not something they would normally recommend. So I definitely need to check today with the midwife that I saw on saturday that that definitely was what the doctor recommended (why is nothing simple!).

ktpie · 20/02/2008 10:06

To go back to the travel changing mat I saw on one website where someone had made their own version of this. Not convinced my sewing skills would be up to that, but it is a nice idea.

ernest · 20/02/2008 10:19

I used to have one like the one in the JL link. It got nicked from swimming pool . seriously, a plain onl cheap £3 is imo better. the pockets are just by baby's head ( and obv small, so you spend unnecessary time wiggling them in and out of tight little pockets. The mini packet of wipes refil thing means you have to pay miles more for mini packets or faff about pulling wipes out of main packet and refilling plastic wipes holder. much easier ime to just bung a normal packet of wipes, a few nappies and a cheapy changing mat into a carrier at the bottom of rucksac/pushchair.

PiggyPenguin · 20/02/2008 11:05

I have just bought a bag from happybags! It is the babymel camille in red. I had a really functional advent black rucksack last time which was fine, but boring, and dh never used it so decided would get something brighter for me this time. Whatever you do, get wipeable fabric! Oh, and a cool pocket for milk etc.

I definitely wouldn't go with the mini wipes, they are much more expensive and annoying, ditto the mini sudocream.

I wouldn't spend a fortune on a bag either. Trust me, after a couple of years of having it permanently strapped to your pushchair/back, as soon as you don't absolutely need it you'll never use it again.

Hoggle · 20/02/2008 11:48

Hi everyone. Hope it's ok to pop back in - I haven't posted for weeks, a combination of this pregnancy not seeming 'real' somehow and also an element of tempting fate (am a worrier!), but have had 20 week scan and all is well. Now baby is kicking and I know we're having a boy, I think it's about time I started believing it's going to happen .

Have spent AGES catching up on what's been going on since I last posted, it's lovely to hear how you are all getting on!

Josie57 · 20/02/2008 12:32

Welcome back Hoggle - glad your scan went well and that your little boy is nice and active. Yes we do chat a bit so feel free to join in.

bitofadramaqueen · 20/02/2008 12:51

Nice bag sybilvimes - good for you treating yourself.

Good tips all on the mini wipes - I've been buying up regular packets of wipes with my shopping and wondered if I should get some smaller packs for my changing bag.

So many bags to choose from, I'm feeling spoiled for choice!

Glad your scan went well hoggle!

Josie57 · 20/02/2008 12:57

As for wipes I just tend to wait until I am 3/4 the way through my regular pack and then put these in my change bag. That way I have plenty of wipes but not the weight of a full bag

Josie57 · 20/02/2008 12:59

Another tip on bags or maybe an observation...the bigger the bag the more you will be tempted to carry! I started off with a big bag and used to carry everything with me but the bag used to weigh lots and always felt really bulky. I've now slimmed down to a smaller bag and this is working much better. As Ernest (I think) said you can always throw extra stuff under the pushchair.

goingfor3 · 20/02/2008 13:01

If I want to travel light I put a few baby wipes into a sandwich bag so I'm not carrying a whole pack. You also used to be able to get a box from pamers which could fit a travel amount of wipes in, I may call them and see if they still do them. I had an Avent rucksack and found it small and hopeless so just went for a normal rucksack and a travel changing mat, I do really like the bag/booster though!

bitofadramaqueen · 20/02/2008 13:08

I'm also still very tempted by the bag/booster. One car family, so a bit further down the line, I can envisage having to take the LO on the bus quite a bit and that bag will mean a something less to carry. Am looking forward to ernest's updated report on it later in the week.

goingfor3 · 20/02/2008 13:24

Just called huggies and pampers and they don't supply the travel wipe cases anymore which is a real shame.

bitofadramaqueen · 20/02/2008 13:50

Back to prams... dont think anyone else looking at the Bugaboo bee, but just in case here's a link to a thread discussing it bee.

calebsmum · 20/02/2008 15:01

Well DS is 3 tomorrow! Have his party to sort out on Saturday, also met my friend and her 9wk old baby girl today which was lovely. Am feeling alot better think it's just pregnancy hormones!

My bump has definately expanded, tried to squash between 2 cars today and my backside nearly took off one wing mirror and my bump smacked into the other one! Was very embarassing. Anyone else just got the free huggies changing bag?? All I had to do was buy a pack of newborn nappies which I needed anyway and got a nice free black and silver changing bag with mat.

Congrats on having a boy hoggle, think the boys are outnumbered on this thread!

ernest · 20/02/2008 15:04

tomorrow for bag update. getting hot under collar

Poor sil has been delayd four hours at heathrow. 1st flight cancelled, 2nd flight then cancelled, almost sent home, loads of tears, (from her not me!) got on another flight, then hours delay. She should've left about 10.30 and she's only just in air. Hope her baby's been ok.

I'm sure she'll thank me for dragging her round baby shop tomorrow.

aberdeenhiker · 20/02/2008 15:18

ernest - the John Lewis changing mat is only £6, so it's not a lot more than your £3 one - that being said, if we'd found one for £3 first we'd probably have bought it. You just need something really simple. (The SkipHop ones that ktpie linked to are gorgeous but a bit pricey for something that's always going to be tucked in a bag).

In terms of changing bags - I'd be concerned about the comfort factor of the bag/booster. Because I walk alot I wanted a small bag that was easy to carry rather than one of the larger ones that would bang into your legs. I think it depends what you're going to use it for, I needed one that I could sling across my shoulder and just go!

Also, if you're planning to breastfeed for the first few months you don't need a special bottle-holder. I've never ever used mine! Even friends of mine who formula fed didn't use them as they'd just mix the formula into the water when it was needed.

debinaustria · 20/02/2008 16:11

Party is over and they've all gone home, it was a success, and Tristan enjoyed it which is the main thing. I still can't quite believe he's 6 already. Choc chip cookies went down very well with the parents as they picked up the children, one Dad had 3! Unfortunately my recipe has golden syrup in which you can't buy here.

I'm shattered now though, we usually have MIl here or Sil and it was just me and dh today. So I persuaded dh that we really deserved to eat out tonight , so we are

Your poor SIL Ernest - hope she gets to you soon

OP posts:
bitofadramaqueen · 20/02/2008 16:37

Oh I've been wondering about the need for insulated bottle holder... Some bags have them and some dont. Haven't done any research on how formula feeding works yet but I thought you were supposed to just mix them (with cooled boiled water ??) as you need them and then heat them up anyway? If you had expressed milk into a bottle (e.g. for DH taking LO out) would they need to keep the bottle warm? Aaarrgggghhhh, another thing I dont know!

Deb - glad party went well. Ernest - what a shame for your SIL - hope there are no more delays!

dylansluckymum · 20/02/2008 16:59

i'm a woman possessed! i can't stop baking, knitting, and generally doing anything but what i SHOULD be doing around the house. i've spent so much time baking today i can't be bothered to cook now so am going to get a pizza! dh is at football anyway so he can't give me a hard time about it!

have been dealing a lot better with ds' tantrums, trying to stay calm which really helps (tough though) and distraction is working not too bad. took him to playgroup today and it was shut for the big kids for half-term. he was so upset, poor boy.

so we baked brownies instead! just going to ice them (my first homemade icing).

about the bags - i ended up ditching mine and using a backpack with cheap changing mat in it so that if i wanted to park the pushchair somewhere i could easily carry things. also works great if you're using a carrier. now i just have a really big bag that has wipes and nappies and snacks in it!

glad your party went well deb and that you get a meal out! happy birthday to your ds calebsmum, hope the party goes well.

G43 and anyone else - they still do the pampers travel wipe cases in canada, if anyone really wants one i can get my sister to send over a few in her next package to me - they cost about $2 so £1!! i carry mine everywhere and just refill it, keeps the wipes nice and moist.

sorry so long! have a lovely evening everyone. xx

PiggyPenguin · 20/02/2008 18:28

I bf both mine until weaning onto cows milk so didn't use the cool bottle holder thing for formula bottles either, but I did use it when they were over one and having mid morning beakers of cows milk. I found that (as a non driver for most of their infancy) they always wanted milk after tumble tots or Jo Jingles when I was a 30-40 minute walk from home and the cool section did come in really handy for that.

Upsidedowncake · 20/02/2008 19:59

Hi everyone

God, I'd forgotten about changing bags. For the last two years, we've been carrying around a handful of nappies, wipes and a little mat at the bottom of the pram. But with newborns, there will be spare clothes, muslins, dummies, Aaarrrgh! So much to relearn!

DLM, DS has started having tantrums too in the last couple of days, but I don't think he's quite got the point yet. This morning, DS was lying on the floor kicking his legs when he suddenly started to laugh hugely. This evening's one was a bit more serious though, but no real tears gives it away, also shouting, 'Mummy. I'm gruuumpy.' How serious do you feel that Dylan is being?

Ernest, nightmare waiting for sil for both of you. I hope she comes soon, and you enjoy yourselves.

Deb, glad party went well.

Happy birthday Caleb.

Welcome back Hoggle.

Josie57 · 21/02/2008 05:20

Do I get the prize for earliest post of the day? I seem to be suffering a lot of insomnia with this pregnancy which is really annoying as I slept blissfully all during my last one - payback time maybe.

Glad the party went well Debs - I'm looking forward to when my ds starts to be more aware of his parties. He'll be two this year so I think we might make a bit more of an effort. Hope you had a nice meal out yesterday.

PregnantPenguin · 21/02/2008 07:57

Hmmm handbag, opps I mean changing bag shopping - sounds fun! At least I can't be too fat for that.

Working from home this afternoon, which means I can catch up on all your posts. . Looking forward to it actually. Can't remember who mentioned cutting down on sugar, but I thought that was a good idea, so have been comparatively sugar free since Monday (it's only been three days but I am so proud!). But it would be wrong to catch up on recent posts without a cream egg, wouldn't it?

Off to see anaethaetist (spelling!) this morning because I have suffered with back problems in the past, then onto GP for 24 week check up. Not exactly sure what to expect in either case. Has anyone got any experience?

BTW in connection with the back probs, thank you everyone for your pillow suggestions. Awaiting delivery of a 'wedge' and am looking out for a 'Big V cushion'. Of course, now I've asked you ladies for advice and am off to discuss it this morning, things are feeling better....!

bitofadramaqueen · 21/02/2008 08:36

Hi Josie - hope you're not too tired later in the day!

PP - enjoy your creme egg, and thanks for th jeans suggestions on the other thread .

MW appointment today so looking forward to hearing the heartbeat again!

makecakesnotwar · 21/02/2008 09:13

MOrning all-

Hello Hoggle
Good news about the party Debs...very impressive

Off to physio today, more SPD joy! Oh, and am having a pedicure- heaven as I can't adequately do it myself any more and I'm quite vain about my toe nails...keep hoping it will detract from 'the bump'!
