Good morning all you creme egg lovers ( and those weird ones amongst us who don't appreciate them)

Good luck for all the scans coming up this week, and next.

Needahand - congratulations on your boy - one of each will be lovely

Well I am very excited as I now have a new oven, and the 1st part of our new kitchen - the cupboard to put the oven in. My kitchen is in desperate need of udpating andhas been since we moved in 2.5 years ago. Problem is we live upside down so kitchen is upstairs - luckily some young male guests were around when we got back to give dh a hand with the packages!!

Hello ladies,

I thin we have chosen a name. I kept calling bump Matilda but know I probably won't use it but today the name Jessica popped into my head. DP and I both like it so I'm pretty sure we eill use it, sounds a little similar to DD1's name but not too much. Just feel so happy to have chosen a name!

calebsmum you made the offer so here we go.... with both girls I had cracked nipples when I started feeding, dd1 probably wasn't latched on properly but dd2 was, is there anything I can do to toughen then up - though I did bf dd2 for 2 1/2 years so maybe they will be tougher this time from her constant sucking!

And while we're there - any tips on avoiding mastitis, had it more than once with both boys, still bfed for a year with both but mastitis is sooo painful. In the UK I knew the Drs and when I got the 1st symptoms I could get medication but it's not so easy here.

Thanks

Hello Ladies, love the new title, but think I may have overdosed on creme eggs last week (4!). The mini eggs suggestion might fix that.

Congrats Needahand - I'm sure everything will be fine.

Please can I join the list too? Although my scan is on Thursday so could wait until we know what flavour it's going to be...EDD currently 12/06/2008.

I have spent all day looking at houses as we need to move before baby arrives, but to be honest it's the last thing I need at the moment - too tired to do anything! We have seen one we like and I want to put an offer in just to get it over and done with so I don't have to deal with any more pushy agents (sorry if any of you are estate agents...).

Is anyone a payroll person that could tell me exactly what period of 8(?) weeks will be used to calculate my maternity pay? I am due on 12/06/2008 and want to know if it will include my Feb pay (payday 28/02/2008). If so it may mean more money and therefore I might be able to afford to take a few more weeks mat leave....

Sorry for rambling.

Great result for all those welsh supporters! (although mostly luck rather than skill ).
Poppy see what you mean about gavin's hair, have gone off him abit now, particularly as I now have a mental link to that Kath and Kim charecter. Besides James Hook is a bit lovely!

breastfeeding ??s I also suffered severe cracked nipple on one side only with DD and I still have a huge scar, a midwife once told my mum to start scrubbing them with a hard toothbursh to harden them up please tell me there is a nicer way?
Shudder I can actually feel latching on pains in my back as i type.

Maternity pay I cant quite remember mine was just x amount of my salary at the time I went on leave plus statutory mat pay as long as it didnt exceed my normal salary, so i basically got my monthly wage for 6 months, if you have a pay rise in feb then that is the pay they will have to take into account as they cant give you a pay decrease again just because your on mat leave. Sorry Im not much help am I? does your company have a website or open files on policies?

I had cracked nipples too but I think it's because I didn't use a lanolin nipple cream. I talked to a breastfeeding counsellor when DS was about a week old and she recommended it and after a few days I was pretty much fine. This time I'm taking it to the hospital with me!

I breastfed DS for 17 months and am really hoping to have the same success with this one. Goingfor3, I was hoping that this time my nipples would be pretoughened from the last time! If only it was true...

Right will try and answer questions I apologise if I miss any!

Best advice I can give is to get oneself to a BreastFeeding Group! You get to meet other new mums, they are informal, usually free, get expert on hand advice. Met some great and lasting friends at my local BF Group.

Cracked Nipples: Usually caused due to the baby not latching on correctly but some women do seem to have very sensitive skin. Rubbing breastmilk on to your nipples before and after a feed and letting them air dry can help.

Mastitis/blocked ducts: Make sure you bra fits properly and is not underwired. With Mastitis you really need to see a doctor but it's recommended that you continue to feed on the infected breast and to massage it in downward strokes to help clear the infection. A hot flannel on your boob can help and also expressing milk whilst under a hot shower or in the bath. It can be quite painful but it really does help clear the infection quickly.

It's so hard to do this in writing, much better face to face!

Here's some websites, the first one has video clips.

www.thebirthden.com/Newman.html

www.breastfeeding.nhs.uk/en/fe/toc.asp

www.breastfeed.scot.nhs.uk/BabyLed/index.html

Just to say, breastfeeding can be really difficult in the first few weeks as your uncomfortable from the birth, have a new baby and your hormones are everywhere. Try not to get too stressed as i've not met a woman yet who found breastfeeding easy from the word go. It takes practice but very quickly it becomes second nature and you become very adept at it! I personally never had any sore or cracked nipples, they did constantly leak however and I had blocked ducts on a few occasions. Either way just try it and remember there is alot of support out there and every woman is capable of breastfeeding.

God my fingers are seizing up! Some more tips/advice:

Your milk usually comes in around day 3/4 after giving birth, your breasts can feel very heavy and sore but this does pass quickly. The first few days after bith you produce colostrum which is a yellowy fluid full of natural antibiotics and goodness for your baby, it sometimes seems like they aren't getting anything when they are breastfeeding in first few days but they are don't worry! Colostrum also acts as a natural laxative getting rid of the meconium in your babys bowel.

You need to get more of the underneath of your nipple in the babies mouth, think 2/3's underneath and 1/3 on top. Can take lots of attempts to get it right so try not to stress it will come. You will get through lots of breastpads as the other nipple can leak when you BF.

oh that lanisol cream is heaven, well worth forking out on. I was given gause from my midwife to try and knit one nipple back together.
Im afraid I only managed 6weeks with DD and it actually took a further 3 weeks for the hack to repair, I know what did it though, the midwife in the hospital told me to rugby ball feed and when we were both asleep she would remove DD she didnt as DD kept sucking the end on me while I was practically out cold.
I really really want to make a better go of it this time DS wouldnt feed at all apart from a bottle as I was in surgery for so long after the birth they fed him before I got a chance to and he would only take bottles. Then with DD not only did one side pour blood, DH was at the other end of the world when she was two weeks old and the school runs etc always clashed with her feeds, oh well one can only hope and try there best, if it goes tits up again (pardon the pun) thats the way it will go.

sory Calebsmum, and I really am not wanting to start soemthing but this has been bothering me all night, but there are some people who are not capable of breastfeeding, me for one due to an operation, and I do have friends who never produced milk. Your advice though for people who want to seems fantastic.

Upsidedownegg · 03/02/2008 08:50

Calebsmum - all the advice is going to be great.

I had a bit of shock yesterday. Was taking DS downstairs after his nap when I slipped and fell downstairs.

The baby and DS were very well protected, thank god, but I am a mess. I landed on my bum so hit my face and bum badly and wrenched my shoulder. Can hardly move today, eating hurts because of where I hit my face. Am feeling very miserable. Off to have a hot bath.

Am assuming the baby is all right as I can still feel movement. I imagine that he would have got a shock, but it is quite a long way from my bum to him, no?

Sorry Sophie didn't mean to offend anyone, obviously operations and the like are totally different but i've not come across women who haven't produced milk before?

Breastfeeding for any length of time is great for your baby so you should be proud. It's frustrating that people aren't told how hard it can be in the early weeks and don't get enough support.

Upsidedown, baby tends to be really well padded inside so i'm sure he/she is fine but you could always speak to your midwife if your worried?

Me and my mum went mad on eBay last night and brought loads of cute dresses for the baby, need to get a double buggy now.

Report
debinaustria · 03/02/2008 09:48

Upsidedown - hope you're feeling OK now, I'm sure baby will be fine but just listen to your body and if it says rest then rest! I know easier said than done with a lo to look after.
