Many congrats Jambers.

Don't worry mariekg - my proper symptoms (exhaustion, nausia) started at 7 weeks. Please just enjoy the lack of symptoms before they set in!!

07mumstheword · 21/02/2008 08:32

Jambers Congratulations. That is so wonderful for you what a lovely surprise.

Mariekg Apart from tiredness I'm a bit symptom less but I think they really kick in about 6 wks +. I'm rather looking forward to them

I'm so hearing of your scans as around here I think I'll have to wait until 20 wks. I will see my GP on Monday to register my pregnancy and hopefully get some answers on the scans available but I've already decided to have a private scan about 8 wks. For those of you who have had early scans is that about a good time? Can you see things are coming along nicely by then? And a heartbeat? (My doctor told me you can't hear a heartbeat until at least 10 wks but I'm sure I've heard differently on here)

CantSleepWontSleep · 21/02/2008 08:45

Congratulations Jambers. I can understand how you feel, as (although conceived naturally) dd was born 5 years after we began ttc, and this time it took us just 14 months to conceive.
How old is your ds?

marie - def don't worry about symptoms at 4 weeks! 7 weeks is a bout the norm for them to begin, but you may be lucky and not get any .

mtw- you can normally pick up the heartbeat from around 7 weeks, so any time after that would be fine. If you are wanting it for reassurance though, then I would personally wait until 9 or 10 weeks. About 8 weeks there's some big development (I forget exactly what) which means that it can be one of the peak times for m/c (my first died at 8+3). It can therefore be more reassuring to have the scan after this point.

bethoo · 21/02/2008 08:56

mumstheword- 10 weeks is the earliest time to hear the heartbeat as it is the size of a peanut then.
well i am still symptomless at 7 weeks and 3 days though preg test says still preg.

on an unrelated baby note took my dogs to vets yesterday for their annual boosters and one of them dropped down dead in the waiting room. what are the chances of that??? anyway i ma devastated but shock has subsided to acceptance now. do miss him terribly.

oh and arent there lots of us?? welcome to all the newbies and congratulations

07mumstheword · 21/02/2008 08:58

CSWS Thank you for that. I do want reassurance so I think waiting for 9-10 wks would be a good idea. Sorry to hear you lost your first.

07mumstheword · 21/02/2008 09:00

Bethoo what a I'm so sorry

sambrads · 21/02/2008 09:36

thanks for the advice everyone very helpful as i cant remember from my first 3! im so sorry about your dog bethoo what a shock!

bigmouthstrikesagain · 21/02/2008 09:42

Sambrads I know what you mean - I think 2nd (or for me3rd) time you know more about what is going on and you are more invested as you know what it is like to have a baby -

My 1st pregnancy I was obsessed with the details of the pg and symptoms, tests, preparing for the birth etc but I could not really imagine what it would be like once the baby had actually arrived.

I am also scared about telling people especially as I have conceived while on the pill so don't really know how far along I am. My trousers are suspiciously tight though[gulp] I have some symptoms so I could be more than my est 4 or 5 weeks!?

Good luck everyone.

mariekg · 21/02/2008 09:45

hi sambrads im exactly the same with each pregnancy ive got worse i think the more you know the more you worry i knew very little with my first pregnancy i sailed through without a care happy days!!

sambrads · 21/02/2008 10:10

thanks ladies at least i am not the only person worrying

i was talking to my best friend yesterday and she was saying to me that she was really surprised and shocked that im not in any hurry to tell my family but thats just how i feel.
to be honest i think it has alot to do with my sis having postnatal depression just diagnoised so im a bit nervous to annouce my news

After worrying about lack of symptoms I have had a DREADFUL couple of days with sickness... be careful what you wish for ladies!

Top tip - toast francais (also called melba toast I think) with butter on has been sorting me out a treat.

Bethoo I am so sorry to hear about your dog - it brought a tear to my eye. My beloved british blue cat had to be put down last year at 2.5 yrs old as he had a fatal virus and not a day goes by when I don't think about him. Pets can really get into your heart can't they? I do now have a british cream (coming up to 1 yr old) and he is a sweetheart too.

Uh oh - ds is squeaking on the monitor. Have a lovely day my dears.

PrePG · 21/02/2008 11:19

mumstheword You can see a heartbeat on a scan as early as 6+ weeks, but apparenlty you can't actually hear it until about 10 weeks. Plus from what I've read it looks so much more like a baby at 10 weeks than 8! Good luck!

PrePG · 21/02/2008 11:26

hansnava I've had a very similar experience. I had lots of cramping (but no blood) early on and mentioned it to my GP who sent me to epu right away for a scan to rule out an ectopic - according to my LMP I was 5+3, only saw the sac and was told to come back in two weeks for a follow up. Went back last Tuesday and saw our little Shrimpy with flickering heartbeat! I knew I ovulated on the 18th day of my cycle, which would've made me about 4+6 when I had the first scan. At the second they pushed back my dates a whole week (went from 7+3 to 6+3 -frustrating!!!) and changed my due date to 4 Oct.

I wouldn't worry, you'll be fine!

Thanks all for your good wishes. My ds was one last month, so if this one makes it they'll be 21 months apart.

Mumstheword, I agree about having a private scan at about 9 weeks, I'm thinking of doing the same myself. Since my previous baby was IVF, I had lots of early scans and I'm not sure I'm patient enough to wait until 12/13 weeks to find out if this one's doing ok. The early scans were all internal (yuk), but at least you could see the hearbeat and know all was well. I think all the main organs are formed by 8 weeks, so the risk of miscarriage drops after that.

I'm also in no rush to tell anyone, think I will keep it quiet until the 12 week scan if I can. Still can't quite believe it's happening.

MrsTittleMouse · 21/02/2008 13:53

I had a seven-week scan with a clear heartbeat, but the baby was only 4mm and looked like a little prawn, so not much to see! Was great to see a heartbeat though, and I wish I could have an early scan this time round.

DH would never agree, but out of interest, how much is a private scan? I am just the same as everyone else here - far more worried about this one than the first. I think it's not just that I'd had the scan and blood tests, it's also because I know what my pregnancy symptoms are like and keep watching out for them, I'm older (obviously!) and I've been on MN a while and seen too many early MC.

Ekka · 21/02/2008 13:57

Congratulations to all the newbies!

Glad I'm not the only one worrying more about this pg! Haven't told the doc yet, but am only 4+1 so hardly in a panic to do it yet (and part of me can't really believe its happening). Still no symptoms, but then last time round I didn't have any and was convinced we'd go for our scan and be told that there was nothing there . A big part of me is hoping it will be the same this time round - don't cope well with feelign ill and with a dd already don't know how I would manage - I'm so impressed with everyone who is surviving....

hansnava · 21/02/2008 14:02

pre pg thank u for the reasurance im trying to think good thoughts until i know different. glad everything was ok for u

hansnava · 21/02/2008 14:06

on the upside i have been feeling sick on and off all day and keep going light headed so if everthing is ok im thinking its a boy as the only symptom i had last time was sore boobies

hedgepig · 21/02/2008 14:22

afternoon everyone, bethoo sorry about you dog did the VET have any explanation?
I'm at home today I have my second bleeding episode so went to see the DR, she checked my cervix and it is closed which is good but she has managed to get me a scan tomorrow so fingers crossed, I just can't concentrate on anything at the moment.
sambrads I know what you mean about being worried second time around last time I just went through it in a peaceful bubble and now I am paranoid about every twinge. I did tell my parents my moms reaction was "how will you cope" followed by she was really pleased!! parents hey!

Jambers99 · 21/02/2008 14:24

The private scans I had with my previous IVF pregnancy were about £70. That was for about 2 minutes, just enough to say "thank god, there's the heartbeat". I think they did some measurement of the size too, but at that early stage it's all very approximate.

hedgepig · 21/02/2008 14:27

my 1st child was a boy and I was appallingly sick so maybe you are expecting a boy. Do you have a girl already?

This is a bit gross but this time I'm being sick but differently, I just seem to sick up half my dinner rather than all of it, so maybe I put some weight on this this.

hedgepig · 21/02/2008 14:34

I just booked a nuchla (£180) even at my age (41) not available on the NHS here. Their price list give £105 for just a dating scan so it may be worth ringing around for prices Mrstittlemouse if you can persuade DH

HelenCS · 21/02/2008 14:48
