thanks girls...

HolidaysQueen · 07/02/2008 18:35

e14 - hope you are curled up on sofa at home and not fretting about missed class!

I'm excited but apprehensive this evening. I just got home to find the trial nappies I ordered have arrived so I might be introducing DH to the delights of disposables vs reusables tonight if he's willing. Here's hoping my nappy skills are sufficient to convince him that reusables are not that different in hassle and (most importantly!) poo exposure from disposables...

I have a lollipop softee, a motherease, a terry and a bumgenius, and then a bambo disposable (if he insists we go down the disposable route then it has to be as eco as possible!)

Wish me luck

PurlyQueen · 07/02/2008 18:53

I'm not going to the hospital antenatal classes either. I think you can have too much information

piggyp · 07/02/2008 20:25

e14 - I should be at a hospital antenatal class now too! Just couldn't face going out in the dark and spending £100000 on parking. I think I'd fall asleep anyway. Going to watch new Life on Mars thing instead (except it seems to be called something else now).
HQ - looking forward to hearing about your nappies. What do the bumgenius seem like? I am still on the verge of ordering - think I will get a selection of fluffles, bimbles and bumgenius. I've been put off bamboo - a friend showed me one of hers and it had gone really hard and scratchy. Got to get all the buckets, liners, mesh bag thing etc too - where are you getting those from/ Lots of the buckets look v small.

MIL has been sending me loads of stuff. I'm feeling v guilty and ungrateful but the problem is we really don't have the same taste. She has sent 10 beautifully hand knitted cardigans - but they are a sort of v wide cloak shape with one button at the top, I can't see how they'll keep LO warm! Also several bonnets(!) with a ribbon to tie under the chin. To me ribbons round the neck and babies don't go! She has used all the patterns she kept since DH was born - but that was in 1967! I have just turned down the offer of a horse-hair crib mattress - that really was a step too far. To make matters worse she has sent up a crib with masses of frilly petticoats (kind of yellowed and brittle) that hang to the ground - and apparently need to be starched!! During transit (by a large and well known delivery firm!) The base for the crib has been completely destroyed! It looks as though its either been run over or the van was in a crash! I'll just have to get a new one from John Lewis instead. I'm quite scared of what MIL'll be like when LO is actually here!

feedmenow · 07/02/2008 20:30

HQ, where did you get your nappy selection from? Is it a trial pack?

HolidaysQueen · 07/02/2008 23:07

So I showed DH the nappies.

He found the lollipop softee way too bulky(which it is, even if it is lovely and soft) and didn't like the poppers on the motherease (which I found fiddly too). I may well use a few terries/muslins in the early days as my mum got us some anyway, but I think now it is really a choice between the bumgenius and the eco-disposables. TBH I think we'll use disposables at first then gradually switch to Bumgenius. Just need to let him get used to the idea first

feedmenow - I got the lollipop and bumgenius from lollipop (www.teamlollipop.co.uk). I met with an adviser last week which was really helpful and she ordered one of each for me - so long as they are not used or washed I can get a refund. I picked up the motherease in Waitrose a while ago, my mum bought me some terries, and the bambo came from spiritofnature.co.uk which is doing free samples of those and moltex. That lot together seemed to be a good selection of the different type of nappies you get (lollipop like totsbots, motherease like onelife etc)

Piggy - Overall I really like bumgenius. They come in nice colours so look good for starters They go on exactly like disposables (everyone recommended them to me on a Nappy thread I started asking for the most disposable-like reusable), and they have about the same amount of handling when you take them off. Plus because they're a fleece insert inside a nappy then they should wash and dry really easily as the individual bits are thinner and you can just restuff them when they're dry so that you're all set when it comes to nappy changes. They're not as soft as some of the things like lollipops and tot bots, but they are much slimmer so more likely to fit under most baby clothes. And they come with two inserts per nappy so you can add in extra protection if the baby is a heavy wetter, or for night times.

I'll probably go ahead and get them from my lollipop lady, together with a starter pack of liners and the mesh bag. I may just get a bucket with lid from my local pound shop so I can get a big one though - probably cheaper as well! I know Waitrose sells flushable liners so that shouldn't be a problem going forward. Plus they're birth to potty which makes it straightforward.

I'm going to let DH mull over it for a bit but I think he was surprised at how similar to a disposable Bumgenius was so I'm hoping that plus the £ and environment benefits will swing it

Right off to bed! Night all

HQ xx

Gooooooood morning! Nice and sunny in London town.

Went for my scan at the Fetal Medicine Centre yesterday. Recommend it, if anyone needs a private scan. Results were all normal, baby on track for dates (used my LMP which is 5 days behind due date given from 12 wk scan), no growth or development issues. So, that's reassuring. I'm thinking now the baby will be ontime or a bit late. Maybe I'll use 11th March instead of 6th March now. Gives me an extra 5 days, which I reckon I need.

It was fun to see the baby again. Apparently weighs 5lbs 5oz with an estimated birth weight of 7lbs 1oz. Hopefully that's accurate, as that seems a nice, smallish weight!

They gave me some photos along with a 3D pic. That's quite creepy, actually! Its nose is a bit squished, so it looks like it's gone a few rounds in the boxing ring. Still, very cool to have a different view.

After scan I battled Selfridges and Oxford St for some reason. As per usual, overdid it and got home knackered. Managed to drag myself to yoga, which did make me feel better. Plus, sweet little baby came to class so that was a bonus.

Favourite ache/pain? That would be my arms falling asleep every night! It wakes me up and I spend most the night turning over just to get feeling back in my arms. Fun stuff.

piggyp · 08/02/2008 09:51

Morning ladies!
Jfly - how exciting to see LO again! Thought of oxford street is a horror though!
HQ - bumgenius sound good, how wide are they between the legs? There's a really clever little mini shower head thing on their website which you fit to your loo pipe and use slosh the poo off into the loo. DH was very taken with this, unfortunately we have an odd loo and it won't fit! He's actually really into using reusables, mainly due to the (hopefully) lower overall cost. Also now he's seen some he is able to be interested in the 'technical aspects' of them! When we got married we made an agreement that he would clear up all dog poos and other things that smell bad (I'm stupidly smell -sensitive) if I did all potential nappies - so I don't think he'll be the one using the nappies!
It's such a lovely day I'm going to have a non-manic tidying / washing / baby things day and spend the morning in my greenhouse planting seeds. They are meant to be sown in March but i think I might be busy then!
Just had an invitation to a hen party on March 15th - LO is due on 3rd, it really made me laugh. Never have I felt less like a night out with a load of drunken women!

e14mum · 08/02/2008 10:34

piggyp- we're invited to a wedding on march 16th (LO due 9th) and they've asked DH to play guitar at it! Ummm... NO!?

It is lovely and sunny today- hooray!

HolidaysQueen · 08/02/2008 10:49

piggy - they don't seem too wide esp compared to motherease. I think this is because they are less bulky overall and are made up three fairly thin layers of fabric (inner, outer and insert) so somehow they seem to scrunch up and be more pliable. I was a bit aghast at how wide the bit between the baby's legs is on some nappies like motherease - bumgenius just doesn't seem that bad somehow. I'll check out the hose thing - that sounds good. We'll probably use flushable liners but useful to be able to rinse out any bits that escape!

turtle23 · 08/02/2008 14:55

Sorry, ladies...Glam and I just checked out Lila's and it's a no-go. Not only is it very expensive, but the stairs are a cast-iron spiral (eek!) and THERE ARE NO TOILETS!! Any suggestions for alternatives please head to meet link. Honestly...£3.50 for a meringue and you can't use the loo?

Glammama · 08/02/2008 15:07

The quiche ws gorgeous though but a little small and they charged £1.75 for a bit of lettuce on the side!! And they put on aservice charge. Yummy quiche though

studentmum1 · 08/02/2008 15:09

hiya guys, thanks for well wishes. we're ok now, just lots of resting. any excuse anyway!

i had my growth scan yesterday and i came away in floods of tears! i had a horrible man do the scan and he wasn't very qualifed. first he couldn't find her head then he pulled my pants right down trying to find her head! i felt utterly exposed infront of my mum, dp and dd!! he prodded and poked alot and in the end couldn't find the right measurement. I asked him if he could confirm that she is a she and he very rudely told me to not be so silly. how on earth could he tell what it was from this angle!!! then dd started throwing a tantrum to top it off!

i'm appauled that this bloke still has a job! when i was 5 weeks pregnant i had to have a scan because i was bleeding and the same bloke couldn't even find my uterus!!

i'm feeling really stressed at the moment, we visited solicitors today and they want us to move house next week! but dp has to go in for an operation on thursday! its gonna be a fun few weeks!!

merryberry · 08/02/2008 16:30

hi all! glad you're physically OK studentmum, sorry to hear about the numpty sonographer and the house stuff. Is your dh going to be OK? I think I can remember you saying he was off in before, but not what for, will he recover in time to help you recover?

Has anyone else reached the stage of being treated like an unexploded bomb wherever they go? since bump dropped I really do look ready to pop in the way I walk i think. I often rub the bump in a dreamy fashion, trying to get him to calm down the kicking or to ease BHs. I noticed in three different places people taking an involuntary step back before asking when I'm due or if I was OK!

And when I say my due date is in 3 weeks, I think I see their pupils contract to tiny points of terror...

merryberry I am the same. Partly it is nice because everybody wants to have a chat with me, partly it is annoying as LO has not even engaged yet.

Will read the last couple of pages now. Finished work today, but baby was trying to force me to stop working earlier. Bless him! I felt rubbish every day and developed a bad cold and all-day morning sickness.

studentmum1 · 08/02/2008 16:38

hiya merryberry , yeah he should be! he's going for a little op on his manhood! he'll just be sore for a week afterwards so moving day could be a little awkward with the pair of us out of action!
is it only 3 weeks for you?! feels like a lifetime away for me! just under 7 weeks to go! wow, makes it all seem so real!

i didn't think my bump was that big but a loevly old lady in marks and sparks loo's asked me if i wanted to use the toilet in front of her because i looked ready to burst!!

gingercat12 · 08/02/2008 16:51

studentmum1 Hope you managed to have a nice cuppa, put your feet up and calm down. It sounds incredibly stressful!

Prisci I do not envy you for your MIL. I normally only allow Mom into our house on condition that she cannot work here, but I told her this time we'll make an exception. She felt very pleased, like sort of graduated

gingercat12 · 08/02/2008 17:04

I missed my MW appointment this week, as went to BFing workshop. (My MWs - all three of them - only available WED afternoon.) Anyway I can tell baby is not engaged yet, he is much too high up.

My pancakes were slightly late. I made the mixture up on Shrove Tuesday, but felt so sick, that I could only fry them on the Wednesday. They were delicious even then!

merryberry · 08/02/2008 17:31

So you've a fair chance of spending sometime as Mr and Mrs WalksLikeJohnWayne, studentmum?

Good luck to him, truly, but in my not so secret heart of hearts I am so glad to know it's not only us fair females who have our bits subjected to erm, discomfort, every now and then....

OP posts:
studentmum1 · 08/02/2008 18:05

ha ha yeah we'll look a right pair! bless him! i'll probably let him milk it for a few days! tea in bed and all that!
its a good job my hormones are alot more relaxed this pregnancy! when i was pg with dd i was always up for nooky! he's been out of action for weeks and won't be allowed anything for another 6 weeks!!

studentmum1 · 08/02/2008 18:47

i've never got round to doing it before so i've just sat and done a public profile page! last autumn i got my first commision for painting childrens bedroom murals and i was on here telling you guys because i was that excited! so i've just put the photos on my profile and a photo of baby bump at 6 months! (its the best photo i have!)

Glammama · 08/02/2008 18:51

Wow Studentmum, those murals are fabulous. Do people know they can also do mumsnet blogs now?

Hope everyone is ok and recovering from colds, car crashes etc.

I'm busy trying not to dwell on (unfounded really) thoughts that LO has dwarfism. I'm being stupid and 8 month paranoid.

turtle23 · 08/02/2008 19:04

Great murals, studentmum!!
Glam...I thought it was worrying you a bit more than you let on. I did a bit of digging myself when I got home, and have found quite a lot of positive info/tales of crap sonographers. You get another scan next week. Ask for someone different to do it, maybe? And if it is the case(which is still highly unlikely), then yes, it will be tough, but you will love him just the same. And you've come through a lot of other crap in life stronger for it. Be brave, eat chocolate! Big hug. x

feedmenow · 08/02/2008 20:08

Glam, have I missed something? What has been said?

papaya · 08/02/2008 21:13
