Wakled Walked

FoghornLeghorn · 22/01/2008 14:57

Oh I seriously want some Chocolate Fudge Cake Ben & Jerry's now

MissChika · 22/01/2008 15:28

Isaidno, that's really useful to know. Thanks for the guidelines. The ante-natal care for my health authority is split between the hospital and the community midwife at the GP and I think that must be where the confusion is. The hospital midwife has told me one thing and the GPs another!

MrsHOP · 22/01/2008 16:10

Hi all,

MissChika - sounds similar to my situation over in Lewisham except they have given me my second midwife appt for mid Feb. Are you with Kings? Coffee sometime sounds great - even if it is a decaf

I had my blood tests yesterday - thought they were going to drain me dry! I am rhesus negative and am bit confused about what this means, someone said I would have to have extra injections or something, has anyone else got this?

Also thought I would share with you all the email a colleague just sent through - talk about scaring the beejaysis out of me!!! This has got to be the worst labour-sharing example I have ever seen...See below...

Hi There,
Adelaide Lin was born Thursday 17th January 2008 14.48

Duration of labour:
First stage: 13hrs 50mins
Second stage: 2 hrs 13mins
Third stage: 12 mins
Total: 15 hrs 15 mins

Early labour: 36hrs - I never thought it was going to end!! Nothing prepares you for it!

Total Total labour: 51hrs 15min

Adelaide is totally healthy and is keeping both parents very busy and sleepless.

sweetkitty · 22/01/2008 16:32

Afternoon all just stiitng here polishing off some grapes.

Misschika - that does sound strange for a first timer. Tomorrow I have my booking in appointment with the MWs at 16 weeks. No more scans. I suspect they will want to see me again in about 6-8 weeks.

Twinkle - love Ben and Jerry you should practice saying them with a straight face when anyone in RL asks you about names.

Minkus - older sisters and brothers are so funny I am loving this time that DD1 kind of knows what is going on she was only 18 months when DD2 was born so was unaware.

Rumple - aww always a lovely moment when they first walk, well done your DD

MrsHop - that is unusually long to say the least, it's not always like that. To put your mind at rest this was my first labour:

waters broke at 37+5 thought I had wet myself, 6.30pm went into hospital got told cervix was completely closed go home.

11pm - was in too much pain contractions every 5 minutes, went back in was told I was only 1cm and it would be ages yet.

3.22am DD1 born so official labour time 4hours 20 minutes although it would have been shorter as they don't count official labour until you are about 3-4cms.

DD2 was 2 hours 30 minutes from first ouch that was a sore BH to baby in arms, was 8cms dilated on first examination by a MW but waters didn't go which slowed things down.

DB3 (in SK's head) 20 minutes from ouch that was a twinge until baby out, relatively pain free () bet you I have a long labour now!!!!

Min912 · 22/01/2008 16:38

That does sound incredibly long... my total labour last time was 19hrs, but honestly, the first three hours went quite quickly

I've been having almost cravings I think - never got them first time around, they're not incredibly strong, just kind of like my normal un-pg desires for chocolate!! Except they are usually for very salty crisps and then this week for a beefburger. Doesn't sound that unusual except that I haven't eaten beef in approx 17yrs. Had a bacon cheeseburger (in a proper restaurant, not mcdonalds) and ate it all up and it was bloody lovely!!

Yey for icklegem, it's great to hear a positive next chapter! Keep us informed!!

Min912 · 22/01/2008 16:46

Poppy was on our shortlist for last time, also Amelia and Daisy. We don't really have a shortlist for boys yet as our list last time was pretty short and we used them up on DS!

He stood up for 3s unaided today! Wooo! At this rate he'll be walking by July... fingers crossed..

MrsHOP · 22/01/2008 16:59

That makes me feel a lot better - thanks ladies

I didn't even KNOW there were different stages!! Better start reading that pregnancy book gathering dust under the bed...

MissChika · 22/01/2008 17:01

MrsHOP - yes I'm with Kings. Does Lewisham fall within Kings or will you be at a different hospital? Yes, it will have to be decaf all the way after the headlines from yesterday! Do you work full time at the mo?

Sweetkitty- yes from what I understoon I would be seeing MW every 6 weeks until after 24 wks then it would go to every 4 wks and then every 2 towards due date. Will have to call them and double-check.

Eeek! Scary long labour stories! 51 hours sounds like a marathon of a labour.

MrsHOP · 22/01/2008 17:41

I thought I would be at Kings but am at Lewisham Hospital - not too bad actually, went there for scan and seemed nice enough! Planning to work F/T until end of June (though seem to be spending too much time thinking baby thoughts and not work thoughts at the mo!) - what about you?

Min - after reading about your salty crisp craving my mouth has been seriously watering!! must go and get some extremely strong salt & vinegar crisps for the journey home...

isaidno · 22/01/2008 17:44

I have reassuring birth stories for you.

DS1 - waters broke 6pm; no pain until 9.30pm, then born at 2.32 am = approx 5 hours.
DS2 - first contraction 8.10am, born 11.11am = 3 hours 1 minute.
No tearing with either of them.

People tend to only share their horror stories...

I'm hoping this baby will just fall out with a gentle cough!

sweetkitty · 22/01/2008 18:19

isaidno - fall out with a gentle cough sounds good to me although I have heard that third births can be tricky.

I remember being at work whilst pregnant with DD1, spent most of my life on MN the other half on baby shopping websites.

beepbeep · 22/01/2008 18:36

Mrshop, my first (and only so far!) labour was 4hr 20mins, fully dilated on first arrival at hospital, then water went and DD followed pretty sharpish (about 40 mins after being examined). No time/need for pain relief others than TENS, until had a few puffs of gas & air as she came out! Not every birth is a horror story (also not every first birth takes ages as most people tell you, hence us waiting to go to the hospital!) x x x

Hi all, have added myself to the list. Wonder if I can get some advice from you more experienced types- thinking about working up until 3 weeks before I'm due- I work fulltime and have a 40 min commute (driving), I also drive a wee bit in the day for my job- is this realistic, presuming I'm fairly healthy still by then? I can go fairly steady -physically- at work but I need an active (well, as active as it has ever been..) brain!

libralady · 22/01/2008 19:50

CarrieHD9

I would say that sounds reasonable. I'm planning on finishing on 20th June, taking a weeks' annual leave and then starting ML on the monday before the baby is due on the Tuesday.
I work a compressed week so long hours on the four days I do work. But it is worth it to have a wednesday off. Looking forward to tomorow, although I am in the throws of decorating!

pigleychez · 22/01/2008 20:20

Hi All,

Im starting my Maternity leave on 2nd June but taking 2 weeks holiday ontop of it so finish on
15th May. Cant wait! 8 weeks before including the holiday.
I have quite a hectic and stressful job( deputy manager in a nursery school) so finishing earlier will be bliss!

MissChika- i have an appointment ( well will when i get round to booking it!) with the Midwife next week at 16 weeks.

Loving all the twin names for Twinkle
We can only seem to come up with boys names so far. Currently liking Thomas and Matthew. Matthew is DH's fav but would be as thats his own middle name.

Bless my mum, shes been giving us suggestions which is great but they are alittle odd for our liking.. ie Mika and Philby.

Sorry to hear that people are still feeling ill. I currently suffering from the awful headaches that others were mentioning the other day- feels like my heads in a vice being tightened!

All this talk of labour is scary! Im trying not to think about it untill nearer the time.

icklegem · 22/01/2008 21:14

Thanks sooo much ladies, means a lot Will definately keep you updated. I just can't resist being nosey and seeing how you're all doing too!!

whilst I'm here...Re birth stories mine were pretty ok

DS 1 - 10hrs, gas n air, pethedine, 7lb 6oz
DS 2 - 5hrs, no pain relief, 7lb 130z
DD 1 - 3hrs, no pain relief, 9lb 4oz and delivered by Daddy!!!!

So they aren't all bad

xxx

TJuice · 22/01/2008 21:36

hi ladies

just a quickie from me. work is busy and i am doing freelance stuff in the evening too which is knackering.

i am doing pretty good but getting well porky -well feel it anyway. got my doppler today and have been smeared with goo for hours tonight. heard the heartbeat but must say its a bit tricky to find. feel fairly reassured though.

also trying to finalise my maternity deal stuff here. they made my "offer" the day before yesterday. being denmark, its not bad but i still have to work out how long i can afford to be off for. luckily here, you get a whole year of state pay which you can share with your partner. so i can go back after 7 months and he can take the rest.
its horrid having to think about that kind of stuff now . . . .

anyway, hope you are all doing well. i was checking out this flickr site earlier and found this sickening woman in the us who charted her stomach through her pregnancy. 14 days later, almost flat again - what's up with that?

shortshafe · 22/01/2008 21:51

Hi all,

MrsHop - I'm rhesus negative too, with my dd I had anti d injections at 28 and 34 weeks, and another after her birth (as she is rhesus positive). This time they've changed the protocol and I'm only having anti d injection at 32 weeks, then again after birth if baby is rhesus positive. The important thing is to make sure you contact the hospital if you bleed or have a bad knock to your bump - the only time it causes problems is if the babies blood gets into your bloodstream, then you need an anti d injection. Your midwife should be able to give you info on rhesus status and anti d injections. It's not caused me any problems at all, so far!

Twinkle - love the twin names! at least the kids didn't want barbie and ken

we're avoiding the name issue 'till after the 20 week scan - when we hope to find out what we're having. dd was far too modest to reveal so we had to wait until she was born!
Poppy and Amelia were on our list last time - both just lovely.

MrsHop's friend's birth story sounds v. scary! A friend of mine had 2 days of early labour aswell, although she did manage to do a full supermarket shop between contractions! I won't share mine - too scary to relive yet! Have been ROFL at the funniest childbirth moments thread in the childbirth topic - do go and have a look!!

isaidno · 23/01/2008 07:49

carrie - that sounds reasonable plan for maternity leave. If you are struggling most employers will let you bring it forward, even though you are supposed to give 28 days notice. Don't forget about any holiday - you might be able to have that first.
A word of warning though - I stopped work at 36 weeks, sat down for a few weeks rest and DS1 arrived at 37 weeks and ruined that plan!

picking up my new car today! starting to panic that it will be too big to park, too expensive to fill with petrol, too scary in general!

Mummywannabe · 23/01/2008 08:15

Icklegem that is great news.

Pigleychez - i'm finishing at 34 weeks, taking 2 weeks annual leave so official maternity leave from 36 weeks, also busy nursery so think its best!

Names - i like Benjamin for a boy and Phillipa (pippa) for a girl but everyone raises an eyebrow at Phillipa so not sure now!

MissChika - I saw midwife at 15 weeks (should have been 8!), seeing her again next week 17weeks.

sweetkitty · 23/01/2008 08:15

isaidno - you will be fine with the new car, I am doing OK parking still a nightmare but I'll tell you what I am actually enjoying driving it. It feels a lot more comfortable and smooth to drive, whereas the Clio was jerky (probably me) this one seems to glide, I quite enjoy being up higher too. Getting the DDs in and out is SO much easier, they seem to love it too as they are in line with the windows at the back now instead of lower down so they can see more. And people seem to respect you more and not cut you up when you are driving a big black tank instead of being a little blonde in a Clio getting cut up by everyone honestly I'm enjoying it and I am a nervous driver at the best of times.

Re: maternity leave, I left at 36 + weeks (London July plus commute) tagged 2 weeks holiday onto the start and actually had DD1 in the first weeks holiday so not even started maternity leave. Talk about shock I still ahd loads to do.

Right better be off booking in appointment today wonder if theres any MWs left that delivered DD2? Oh and must find something to out some pee in!

FoghornLeghorn · 23/01/2008 08:21

Morning All,

Labour details :

DD1 - waters broke, 28 hour labour, G&A, Pethadine, Epidural, Ventouse = 8lb 9oz Evie
DD2 - waters broke long before any contractions, G&A (made me sick), Epidural (failed) = 8lb 13oz Casey (drugfree due to failed epidural)

Am too hoping for a cough to work with this one but have heard some horror stories about 3rd babies too

EEC · 23/01/2008 08:28

Why third babies? (she says trying not to panic!)?

FoghornLeghorn · 23/01/2008 08:41

Sorry don't mean to panic you

I am my mums 3rd baby and I was the worst and longest labour apparently. My best friend had her 3rd in October and ended up being induced and was pretty ghastly. Best friends mum has 6 children, best friend is her 3rd and her labour was horrific, yet numbers 4,5&6 were nowhere near as bad.

S'pose it's just one of those things, some people will say 3rd was the worst, some people will say 3rd was the easiest - guarantee I get the worst one though
