The last message I posted seems to have filled up the old thread so I thought I'd start a new one.

Since bump size was our last topic, I thought this might do for a thread title.

OP posts:

On the nappy front we got through loads at the beginning as I used to change my ds after every feed . Now that my ds goes for 12 hours overnight without a nappy change I think I will opt for fewer changes this time. Having said that my ds used to poo about 8+ times a day as he often used to poo after a feed - what goes in must come out. Mind you I did get fed of people telling me oh breast fed babies hardly poo at all. This was definitely not the case for us. Might be different next time.

With regards to the nappy makes. I had bought pampers and huggies newborns which was really lucky as the pampers ones really didn't seem to fit my ds at first. Although now it is the other way round. Tesco nappies are pretty good too.

Gr1973 - sorry about the house, that's awful news. Enjoy the wedding and lets hope you have some good news when you get back.

Josie57 · 08/01/2008 15:37

oops - the house comment should have been directed to makecakes - sorry!

goingfor3 · 08/01/2008 15:45

I jsu saw one of my friends at school. She was due a month after me but a few weeks ago she said she didn't feel pregnant and wasn't growing a belly. She'd had a mmc and though she says it's for the best as the baby wasn't planned and realistcally she couldn't have managed I really do feel for her.

josey · 08/01/2008 16:27

Makecakes sorry about the house, why you are most stressed and the house is at its worst requiring the most from you that is when it will sell.
I had a last min viewing I had to go out in half an hour and my dd (while the estate agent was on the phone) through her dinner everywhere!!!! I rushed around so much i felt sick, but my house sold. Wish you all the best, and enjoy your trip.

G43 that is awful, why doesnt she clean it up herself who the hell is she getting to clean it for her I still do mine with hellish morning sickness.

I have been looking at the nappies as well, havent used with my others they were really difficult to come by where I last lived though thats not a good excusse. Stupid question coming up, but are the liners not supposed to prevent so much poo scraping?
I have been looking at the Bambino Mio birth to potty pack love the video they have online, the tots bots look good but hellish to dry. Any advise greatful.
I can only use pampers as both my kids are allergic to hugies.

I had dd at her music class today and from the noise baby was dancing everywhere. The pram shop is next door as well so i had a little look and they have the one we both like in a new colour which I really like

systemsaddict · 08/01/2008 16:33

Ooh it's exciting that we're all starting to do proper baby prep now - though you're all massively more organised than me, we're just starting to think about selling the house, and I'm not buying anything for the new baby really! V. different to last time when I had list after list after list ... anyway with the vast experience of one child my personal essentials are these:

  • a few clothes in newborn and 0-3 sizes (people send and pass on SO many once the baby is born, honestly, they just come and fill up the house!);

  • somewhere for baby to sleep (we have an Arm's Reach co-sleeper mini travel cot - didn't get cotbed with ds1 till he was several months; he hated moses basket and slept in lie-flat bouncy chair / car seat / sling / arms during the day when v. little); plus sheets, a couple of cellular blankets for swaddling, and 2 small sleeping bags for when they outgrow the swaddling.

  • somewhere for baby to be changed (just a mat will do if you are happy with the floor, this was our plan but I couldn't pick ds up from the floor after having him - so we ordered a changing table from kiddicare which got there next day and is still going strong)

  • somewhere to wash baby (we have a Tummy Tub which seemed madly extravagant but was the best buy ever, really gave me confidence, used it till ds was over a year and it is used to store toys now - but a washing up bowl will do)

  • some way of transporting baby about - I'm just using a wrap this time, rather than getting a double buggy early on, as we have NO space for a double buggy and can only just cope with storing our Zapp (which I love, v. light and manoeuvrable, and folds down to nothing, but not great to go shopping with - so depends on your lifestyle)

  • nappies - we use One Life which are like Motherease One Size and Motherease Airflow (popper) wraps, which are by far the best among those we've tried. We dry pail, it's dead easy, and have a dedicated narrow airer in front of bathroom radiator for drying nappies so they don't take over the house. Also some disposables for first few days / weeks - ASDA new eco-disposables are fab, used them over Christmas, found them v. effective, non-smelly (as compared to Pampers / Huggies which smell vile to me) and the first disposable not to give my eczematous child a bright red bum! I reckon around 20 real nappies keeps you going if you wash every other day or so. I like to have more wraps than most recommend - about 6 - as I always run out. I am Highly Domestically Challenged but really prefer real nappies - they seem more effective, less smelly, and better for ds' skin - and with the volume of washing babies generate, a nappy load every other day just doesn't register with me.

  • cotton wool / washable wipes - we just use washable wipes and water, still, unless out and about, it's better for ds' skin and cheaper!

Hope all are doing well - I have missed loads with Christmas busy-ness but will try and keep a better eye on things now. I'm fine, bump growing, finally blooming and feeling really energetic which almost makes the first few months seems worth it - this is the first time I've felt genuinely healthy since a while before ds1 was born, I'm making the most of it!

systemsaddict · 08/01/2008 16:43

oh and a car seat of course. We bought the 'wrong' one initially - had a Britax but they're quite narrow and enormous ds rapidly filled it up! Then got a Maxi-Cosi which was wonderful, a friend has it now and I'm looking forward to getting it back, saw it at New Year and got v. nostalgic :-)

Josey, yes, liners cut out much of the poo scraping, and you have a choice with them too, disposable in bin, flushable, or reusable fleece. I use mainly reusable fleece, and in the early months the poo is so runny I just threw it all in the washing machine tbh with a prewash to rinse it out. Since weaning ds I just shake the fleece liners over the loo and the poo mainly drops off - sometimes requires a bit of a peel off with loo roll (lovely) or if really claggy a sluice in the flush. Sometimes if I run out of fleece liners I use flushable ones from Little Green Earthlets and must admit it is nice to have the convenience to just chuck them in the loo!

josey · 08/01/2008 17:17

off me head is piggled with looking at all the different nappies online, they all look very good I have to say the idea of the banbino ones where you just fold the square with the liner and pop it in the cover sounds and looks simple enough for me and easy enough for washing and drying, as i have a wash aholic husband when he is home its impossible to find enough space to dry what we have lol! They are very well priced also. Ok away to make dinner and try and function the nappy brain

Parofleurmapu · 08/01/2008 18:19

Hello thanks all for great advice on sleeping etc and now nappies!!

Really looking forward to doing stuff now. Just hope landlady hurries up and collects double bed and wardrobe that is spare room so can get on with decorating babies room.
If she doesnt come soon df is going to throw it out!! we have waited 4 months now!

i am absolutely cream crackered first day back at school today and though kids were angels, i had loads to do and now feel exhausted! Have really annoying colleague who keeps saying things like oh you shouldnt be tired as its the 2nd trimester! Oh you shouldnt really have second helpings of that youll put on weight!!!! I just want to tell her b*** off!

Oh joys of hormones and pregnancy!!! Bring on the weekend!!

gr1973 · 08/01/2008 18:44

systemsaddict - what a great list!

On the nappy front, the 'nappylady' recommended totsbots bamboozles for me. I know a few people who have used these and read some really good reviews everywhere so I think I'm going to go with those. With motherease wraps though.

Glad a few people have said dry pailing is ok - I've really been humming and ha-ing over it so its reassuring to hear from other people that dry pailing is fine!

I looked at the bambino mio ones too - they've won a few awards in some of the pg magazines but I did come accross a few dodgy reviews too which put me off. I think I found some threads on MN discussing them (I'll have a look and see if I can find that chat)...

gr1973 · 08/01/2008 18:50

on the home page of MN there is a link to 'product reviews' on left hand menu. From there you can find product reviews on a whole host of reusable nappies and other stuff too.

I understand that a lot of local authorities have trial packs etc if people want to try out nappies before buying.

parofleurmapu - sorry to hear you're so knackered, nearly half way through the week now !

ernest · 08/01/2008 19:18

I've got tots bots with motherease wraps Dunno if they're bamboozles tho - only had good old fashioned tots bots original in my day

goingfor3 · 08/01/2008 19:58

gr1973 if you were recommended tb bambozles it may be worth looking at little lamb nappies which are very similar to tots bots but work out more economical if you are buying a large amount. I have a couple of the original nappies as they used to give away free samples and they look and feel lovely, not sure about the bamboo ones though. www.littlelamb.co.uk/itemlist.php/findclas/9?gclid=CL_Mjt-155ACFQpZMAodo15bQQ

Upsidedowncake · 08/01/2008 21:11

Just think: a week ago we were all talking about creams for itchy skin. Now it's reusable nappies, prams, and baby baths.

So exciting.

We haven't mentioned much towards the actual birth apart from the early home birth flurry right at the beginning.

At my booking-in appointment, MW tried to make me go all acupuncture and hypno-banana but, with ds1, despite a lovely birth plan, I had every type of intervention going so that doesn't seem very realistic. Have head properly stuck in sand.

vinorouge · 08/01/2008 21:30

Ernest and Deb thanks for the comments re moving from cot to bed - chatted to DH and he is all for doing anything early!

Real nappies - I used bambino until about 8/9 months when suddenly they got really bulky when Ellen was trying to walk so just use disposables now. I tried cotton bottoms and tots bots (I think) and went with what I preferred. IMO the shaped all in one things took longer to dry. I only dry pailed too. They soon pile up ready for washing! I got a birth to potty set Josey from Kiddicare.Just read about little lamb, tried them too and that was the bulkiest, think I paid for my sample.

Hadm midwife appt today and heard heartbeat - yippee!!! Had to wait an hour and a half to be seen cos no midwife had turned up for clinic first thing. When the machine said there was a 100 minute wait I nealry flipped. Read 3 magazines!

katyjo · 08/01/2008 21:32

hi everyone, just popping on again, had a horrible fight with no so dh (thinking of renaming him something much worse). I get so fed up with the 'I'm the one earning the money debate', I would never throw things like that at him....arrgh! I won't bore you with all the details, but I'm fed up of being treated like I swan around all day with my feet up, I work 2 and a half days a week and I organise everything else, bills, presents, cards, shopping. He comes in from work and expects time to himself while I sort out his dinner and put ds to bed...arrgh. Sorry just needed to vent, maybe some of its hormonal, but everything is getting to me at the moment.

Where are you getting your scan done gr1973? I haven't booked one yet, couldn't decide where to get it done.

My sister used a nappy company, with her third child, they gave you the first few nappies free and a pail and they used to pick them up once a week and deliver fresh nappies, it cost about £40 a month, can't remember the name of the company but I can find out, I think they did a free trail as well.

Makecakes, I'm so sorry your having a horrible time, it is really stressful, my friend went through the same thing recently ended up crying in the bank when third lot of buyers pulled out when organising their mortgage, but it did have a happy ending and they are happily settled in their new home now.

ernest · 08/01/2008 21:33

elective c-section. 100% def. If I get a choice, I'll go for Friday 13th June. (will be exactly 39 weeks) Not fussy about time. Tho would prefer morning. About 9.30 would be perfect.

Is that specific enough? lol Chosen hospital. (Bülach).

That's about it really.

Remind me why we're doing this? OMG. I cannot believe I have a minature human being wriggling around in my tummy. All of us actually. That's just plain weird.

Is it too late to get cold feet?

debinaustria · 08/01/2008 21:41

The birth - oh *** I'd forgotten about that!!

debinaustria · 08/01/2008 21:44

I think it may be a little late for cold feet Ernest

I would rather just blank out the birth bit at the moment

ernest · 08/01/2008 21:46

Sorry to break it to ya, but it's gotta come out, debs

josey · 08/01/2008 21:47

god my head really is spinning now with all this nappy talk, just read the littlelambs, they look really cute, I just dont know anymore
I might try a couple of samples on dd while im trying to get her in the potty maybe if i buy them she will decide there is no way she is using them!! wishful thinking!

Upsidedown, im still planning on having a home birth with as little as possible hopefully not even gas and air as it makes me feel sick.DS arrived in 3 and half hours but the midwives said you have hours yet and jabbed me with drugs, ds came out blue and dopey!! after me demanding they didnt do the same with dd shock horror they said no your only 4cms you will be at least 4hours yet even if you go quick, I still said no they still jabbed me and low and behold 40mins later DD came out blue and dopey as she was drugged as well, she was 3 hours. I labour hard and fast with no warning so travel in a car in so much pain and so stressed that I will have to push in a layby I just want to stay at home and crunch ice. If something goes wrong and I have to have a hospital birth on the other hand I will demand I stay there well in advance and get an epidural so I dont kill one of the midwives

josey · 08/01/2008 21:49

ernest/debs pmsl!!! why cant it be as much fun coming out as it is going in

ernest · 08/01/2008 21:54

oh I don't know josey. Look hard enough and you're bound to find some web sites telling how much fun it can really be. I remember on mumsnet ages ago thread about having an orgasm during labour

debinaustria · 08/01/2008 22:01

I'm sorry did you say orgasm Ernest????????

Surely not, unless the mw's had left the room and her partner was trying to distract her - can you imagine at that stage letting your partner anywhere near anything slightly erogenous!!!

ernest · 08/01/2008 22:05

I take it you missed that particular thread then. Call me old fashioned, but am slightly

Still, nowt so queer as folks

josey · 08/01/2008 22:06

hahahahaha!!!! I have heard of many people saying that au natural is orgazmic sure one of the mags i read it was Davina Mccall who said so but she is round the twist in a lovely way of course!

I think if I had an orgasim in the middle of labour my dh would never come near me again for fear he couldnt compete iykwim!!!!!!!

And the only way he would get IT close to me would be if i was preforming a home snip
