Thank you @PurplePansy05!

Has anyone on here had any experiences (positive or negative) with having a membrane sweep and stretch?

I had one this morning at 39+3 and wondering what to expect. Consultant said cervix was soft and stretchy, I am almost 2cm dilated, mucus plug/show seems to be gone (must have missed it) and baby fully engaged. She touched his head through the water bags! She said if it works labour could start within 48 hours, but trying not to get my hopes up.

PurplePansy05 · 13/08/2021 19:26

@WolfMother326 Someone in my NCT group had it earlier this week and she was in labour the same evening! xx

I only commented on one thread but since I’m sat twiddling my thumbs perhaps I should join in again. EDD was 20th however after a stint in the hospital last week with kidney stones and swelling of the kidneys / bladder (plus baby’s weight / size only being 10th centile and tapering off slightly) I was booked in for an induction today.

Went in to the delivery suite at 12ish and was checked out by 2.30pm Grin already 2cm dilated so they don’t need to do a balloon / pessary but my maternity wards are so busy they couldn’t fit me in today. Basically got to ring up over the next few days at 8am and hope they can fit me in to break my waters and start me off. At least they sent me home though, a woman I was on the wards with last week was waiting 5 days to be induced Shock

So, sat at home doing everything to try and naturally get me going.

Thanks @PurplePansy05 ☺️

WolfMother326 · 13/08/2021 19:47

Thanks @PurplePansy05 that's encouraging! I was told it only works in 50% of cases but we shall see. I walked all over Hyde Park today with my mum who has arrived yesterday from the US for the birth (after not seeing her for 2 years due to the pandemic) so the timing feels good, and maybe the walking and happy hormones will stimulate things!

PurplePansy05 · 13/08/2021 19:52

@MikeWozniaksGloriousTache Sounds like you've had a tough time. Good luck now, hope things progress quickly for you!

@WolfMother326 So lovely your mum is here 😊 Glad you had a nice time, enjoy every minute after such a long separation xx

Thanks for the new thread :)

Lovely to see the names all listed together - a lovely selection :)

Aaaaa1519 · 13/08/2021 20:54

@WolfMother326 how did you manage to get one so early on thought it wasn’t offered before 41 weeks?

I’m booked in for sweep on Wednesday as baby is officially overdue now, curious to know experiences. Mainly does it hurt? I still have nightmares about speculums 😂

lucyrp · 13/08/2021 20:58

@Aaaaa1519 think it varies from trust to trust. Someone j speak to was offered one at 39 weeks with her first baby however I'm not allowed one until 41 weeks with my second baby who's measuring big 🤷🏼‍♀️ doesn't make sense to me

Hoares3 · 13/08/2021 21:02

Thank you @PurplePansy05 for the new thread love reading about everyone's new arrivals

Magik01 · 13/08/2021 21:03

Thanks @PurplePansy05 for the new thread!

Aaaaa1519 · 13/08/2021 21:09

@lucyrp yeah it’s strange I mean I was hoping for one at my appt on Wednesday but she said wait til 41 weeks

I really hope it works. Had growth scan today baby is currently estimated 7.7lbs so no worries about it being small. I’m scared of getting to 42 weeks and dealing with an almost 9lb baby 🥴

lucyrp · 13/08/2021 21:11

@Aaaaa1519 I asked for one at my 38 week appointment because baby was measuring at 6lb 15oz at 36 weeks and I was worried about having a huge baby and my first was born at 38+5 at 8lb 1oz so thought they'd be keen for them to come out soon too but she was convinced I'd come early on my own anyway. Here I am basically at 40 weeks with what could be a 10lb baby already 🥲 can't wait for all the complications coming my way .... and a 3 hour transfer time to hospital. Yay

WolfMother326 · 13/08/2021 21:16

@Aaaaa1519 I think its because I'm consultant led with Crohns disease and there are risk factors for me that maybe don't effect others? I didn't even ask it was just offered. Sorry you haven't been able to have one yet!

WolfMother326 · 13/08/2021 21:21

@Aaaaa1519 it hurt a little but didn't last long. The dr said it would have hurt more if my cervix wasn't 'preparing' or softening on its own

Aaaaa1519 · 13/08/2021 21:24

@lucyrphave you got another growth scan at 40weeks? mine was 6.11 at 36 weeks so not too far off, hopefully this one will be smaller. My SIL started with a 10lb baby and then each one after was smaller so it could go either way

@WolfMother326 oh that could be why, benefits must outweigh any risks. Hope it all goes well for you x

lucyrp · 13/08/2021 21:33

@Aaaaa1519 nope she wasn't concerned with the growth at 38 weeks so didn't get sent for any more scans. Seems ridiculous if you ask me especially the worry its caused me and I've been able to stay calm until now but seen as my due date is on Monday and no baby yet the panic is setting in. My measurement at 38 weeks was still above the 97th percentile too 🙃

lucyrp · 13/08/2021 21:34

@Aaaaa1519 at 36 weeks baby's abdominal circumference was measuring at the gestation of a 40 week baby☹️

Caz1226 · 13/08/2021 21:41

I’ve got a sweep booked in for Wednesday I’ll be 40 weeks plus 1
I was hoping the little one would make an appearance before then but I’m not confident!
@WolfMother326 how uncomfortable did you find it? X

MK0411 · 13/08/2021 22:20

Thank you all for the warm welcome :)

I'm considering a sweep too if the baby doesn't show up by 40wks (39wk today). My only concern is that I don't want the sweep to accidently break my waters as it happened to one of my friends. I've heard water breaking can lead to more painful contractions, plus I may not be allowed to use the birthing pool due to risk of infection.
@WolfMother326 do let us know how you get on.

Aaaaa1519 · 13/08/2021 22:28

@lucyrp I do find them a bit panic inducing, it starts a little obsession off worrying about how big/small they’ll get.
Are you still good to give birth at the midwife unit or is it hospital now?
With those measurements surely you would be offered a sweep or induction to stop you going over 😐

biscuitcat · 13/08/2021 23:32

@Aaaaa1519 Rowan was over 9lb on his due date! And his head was at the 99th centile!!! So really thank goodness it all ended in a section or who knows what a mess my downstairs would be 😂

PurplePansy05 · 14/08/2021 00:52

Just to say my son's abdominal circumference was supposedly nearly 42 weeks at 35+6 and when he was born he had a perfectly normal size tummy. So the estimates are just that, estimates! Scans aren't 100% accurate. xx
