no no noooo don't fork out for a new coat that you will only wear a short while. buy a cheap nice poncho instead and wear that underneath your normal coat

MarchMum · 25/11/2007 12:39

Imjin, too late on the ribs, LO found mine last weekend, god it hurts.

If headaches are completely hormonal, the gp said pain med won't do much for it. He suggested water and wait for it...a small cup of coffee!!

Turtle, are you coming on the 6th? If not, shall I send your Triscuits?

Preggers, so sorry about your fall, am terrified I will do the same given clumsiness. Get better and hot tub away!

HQ, let us know how the weekend in Kent was, I am looking for some short get aways before LO invasion!

Hope everyone else is having a good weekend!

turtle23 · 25/11/2007 14:22

Marchmum..Unfortunately I dont finish work til 630 so I wont make the 6th. Am considering coming up to town very soon for a 3d scan, so maybe could pick them up?

MarchMum · 25/11/2007 16:56

Turtle - I assume you are coming to harley street or thereabouts so I am close and can drop them off, let me know!

derah · 25/11/2007 17:41

Hello ladies

Feeling a little blue this evening. I've been part of the homebirth.org.uk mailing list basically since I found out I was preggers, and it's been really helpful. But lately it seemed to be full of posts slagging off the medical profession and saying that stuff like scans, anti-D injections, vaccinations etc etc are all bad and harmful (without citing much in the way of reasons or evidence). I got a bit tired of this cos I know that it's all scary enough for first-timers without being told that the medical advice/help they are given is all dangerous. So I said as much on the mailing list. Now I'm being flamed as evil and even called a troll!!! I was trying to stick up for the medical profession, and even had a midwife accusing me of being a Daily Mail reader!!

So I've accepted that I'm outnumbered, they're all determined to be complete hippies and live in the dark ages. I guess I've learned as much as I can from that list and won't be bothering any more. I was going to join a local homebirth group but now I'm too nervous in case they're all rabid hippies too!! Not that I've got anything against hippie types.... I use cloth nappies, recycle, compost, am vegetarian etc etc, so most people think I'm pretty hippie as it is. So for me to think these people are taking it too far, it must be bad!!

I just can't believe that there aren't any more rational types on the mailing list who might come to my defence. Not everyone who wants a home birth wants one because they're convinced that the NHS is evil personified... some of us would just rather be comfortable at home than uncomfortable in hospital.

Sorry to rant, just feeling a bit upset that I tried to be the voice of reason and got shot down in flames. I don't take criticism well!

surprisedandexcitedmum · 25/11/2007 18:50

Derah, I too wanted a home birth, not because I want to villify the NHS but because my Aunt, who's a midwife, always said it was more relaxing.

Instead DP persuaded me to go to hospital, so I'm hoping to combine all the things I've picked up on my way: a hospital birth; Visualisation from Dr Gowri Motha; a little gas and air; breathing exercises from Pilates teacher; hopefully a little moving about; huffing and puffing; maybe a low level epidural if required.

But these are only plans. I think you were being the voice of reason, you don't have to go completely one way or the other, just choose the bits that suit you from all the resources you are offered.

derah · 25/11/2007 19:41

I've just had a private message from another reader of the list (also due in March ), who said that she agreed with me, but she's too scared of the militant types to say so on the list! I had said that they were probably scaring first-timers, and she told me that's exactly the case; she's too scared to ask her questions because some of them are so extreme in their views.

So I feel much better now, knowing that I was at least slightly correct in what I was saying!

Mossy · 25/11/2007 21:27

Sorry to interrupt ladies but it's that time of the month again! Are any of you in Merseyside and thinking about breastfeeding? Look here for details of an antenatal breastfeeding workshop this Thursday, especially for pg ladies. It's not a "sales pitch"; no one is going to try and "talk you into it"; it's more of a "how to" so that if you do go down the bf route, you'll be prepared once you've given birth.

And there's free biscuits. And tea. And coffee.

imjin100 · 26/11/2007 08:15

derah, take heart, we love you and all views welcome here. Anyone who gets on the high horse about anything is very short sighted - we all have opinions and everyone is valid...so there and a virtual up yours to them! It is their loss if they don't have your input anymore....
Preggersagain so sorry about your fall, sounded horrible and hope the arm quickly repairs itself. Glad to know the lo's are still busy!
HQ - love spontaneous night away thought - I shall live vicariously through you as until February we have every single weekend organised so no chance of slipping away - ummmm - this is bad news!
Interested in coat conversation - i have wool poncho but not keeping me warm enough on cold winter days- thinking of looking on ebay for a cheap coat - maybe silly.
My back is rotten - spent much of the weekend lying on the floor - not sure quite how I'm going to manage at work as sitting is pretty tough after a certain point in the day. Paracetomol help but it's not a cure all. Is it unreasonable to actually chop your boobs off at this stage?

fitnforty · 26/11/2007 08:41

preggers - hope you and the pinktwins are doing ok, sounds like a nasty fall. {{{hugs}}}

Derah, know what you mean on these community things -i've been monitoring the continuum concept one since "Bringing Up Baby" was on, but it's full of very enthusiastic earth mothers (mostly American) who won't listen to a word said in favour of Western standards of living (even to make life easier) and they're currently debating why they don't believe in strapping their kids into car seats. Am much too scared to even introduce myself on the list!

Very excited by my weekend's ebaying - not only did I get my Xplory delivered (only 1 month old, turquoise) and played around with that for ages....also got a reasonably new-ish 2nd hand Moffii Oberon cradle for pretty much 1/2 price. Will just need to get a new mattress for it and they aren't too expensive! So that's now the bulk of the big purchases out of the way, and plenty of time for the new year sales to get the little things like blankets, baths etc. Got enough newborn clothes to last the initial weeks...

Got to figure out what to do about a car seat next - go for a group 0+ which will only last to 9 months in the chance that i might want to attach it to the xplory, or assume i won't need to wheel the baby about in it so go for a group 0/1 which will last a lot longer?

So - how important is the ability to be able to remove the car seat from the car with a sleeping baby in it, rather than risk waking the baby up when arriving at destination?

doup76 · 26/11/2007 09:07

'Morning all!

Such a good question fitnforty and one I have been asking everyone I know with a baby!! Unfortunately the answer I have had so far is "it depends on the baby". Some babies are dead to the world when they are asleep so you can do what ever you want with them. Others (like my niece - 4 months old)are great little sleepers but can be incolsolable if woken up. So I've got no idea....
Would also like to hear what those with experience have to say....

merryberry · 26/11/2007 09:10

also depends on how much you drive! we hardly ever do, so wasn't worth it at all for us.

derah, don't let them get you down. it's horrible to be ganged up on, especially when you're right! take comfort in the good you have done for that one mum that you know about, and probably others you don't know about.

i hope you're not too stiff and sore pgagain.

ds has a cold, but wants to go to the shops and 'buy poo' because there was none in his nappy this morning.

HolidaysQueen · 26/11/2007 10:04

derah - bah! i hate it when people gang up on others who say perfectly reasonable things. half of the people who did it probably only did it cos they want to be seen to be in with the queen bees on the list or something, and therefore are weak-willed and not worth listening to. such bullying behaviour!

Weekend away was LOVELY We went to Broadstairs and spent Saturday eating lovely food, walking on the beach and exploring the town, and generally congratulating ourselves smugly on our spontaneity .

On Sunday we did an 8 mile walk up and down the cliffs between Deal and Dover. I really enjoyed it and felt very fit and healthy until the last mile where I got incredibly stiff and achy and hobbled to the end. By the time we got home last night I could barely move, but the baby clearly loved it as his kicking was stronger than it ever has been! I'm surprisingly fine this morning, although a bit disappointed as I was hoping I could get a day off work by claiming my hips had seized up and that I couldn't get out of bed!

e14mum · 26/11/2007 10:10

lol merryberry- you have a cute ds!

Derah, I'm glad you've found a commrade. Well done for sticking up for what you thought.

On the coat front- how about a big scarf/pashmina wrapped over an undone coat? That's my plan, although haven't been cold enough to try to yet. I refuse to buy a new coat! (Rather spend the money on other lovely things )

Happy Monday! E

HolidaysQueen · 26/11/2007 10:17

Sorry, but I've got more of my naive first-timer questions for you experienced ladies:

Should I buy a pram suit/snow suit/all-in-one fleecey thing for the baby? We're planning to take the baby for a walk everyday in a sling from when he's very little so thought one of these would be useful, but I'm not sure if they are only for the absolute coldest weather (i.e. winter) or whether they are still useful (or even essential) throughout March-May when the weather can be changeable. Any thoughts?

Oh and on the subject of slings/carriers, I've heard that Baby Bjorns are rubbish if you have big boobs as they don't fit properly/comfily. Anyone got any experience of this? I'm thinking of getting a cloth sling instead but it looks like we can actually borrow a Baby Bjorn off my brother-in-law, so just wondered whether it would be suitable.

preggersagain · 26/11/2007 10:23

morning! bright and breezy and drugged up to the eyeballs- but here i am!!!!

So Saturday after the fall- felt sore and achy but carried on regardless sunday morning woke up thinking a herd of elephants was sitting on my arm- couldn't move the damn thing- at all it had swollen up to the size of a grapefruit and was a fetching shade of purple- so off to A&E- cue lots of "ooh, yes looks broken, don't really want to x-ray you because of pg, hmm, not sure whether to refer you upstairs to antenatal" to cut a long story short- saw my own consultant eventually, he said an x-ray needed, x-ray confirms break, arm in plaster, preggers drugged up on codeine!

Off to chat to the council now about poor pg women falling over on their vicious paving slabs and breaking their elbows!

weather in Wales is crap today- even more so than usual reminds me i need to sort out all of my raincovers etc (car seats especially)

To butt into the car seat convo- it depends how much you drive and if you ALWAYS drive to your destination? i have to drive everywhere (due to living in the middle of sodding nowhere!) so i went for cabrio's with bases purely to make arriving at my destination just that little bit easier, also with twins it will be easier to strap them into the seats before leaving the house rather than have to carry them to the car and juggle whilst getting them into seats

With all things baby its true that you won't know whats best until the baby is here and in your arms!

e14mum · 26/11/2007 10:29

Yikes! Broken!!? Sending lots of gentle hugs your way.

timmyinatizzy · 26/11/2007 10:44

preggers you poor thing. Hope that pain has dulled down a bit for you.

Surprisedandexcited - what sort of things do you do to help your Carpal Tunnel? I've had it mostly in my right arm for about a month now, but Saturday night was a nightmare with it. Had such a bad nights sleep, everytime I woke up it hurt and couldn't get it to stop.

Derah - Good for you for standing up for what you believe in. And ner ner to all those nasty people.

imjin100 · 26/11/2007 10:47

preggers - so sorry -what a nightmare, take care of yourself.

surprisedandexcitedmum · 26/11/2007 12:15

Timmyinatazzy, Carpal Tunnel is worse in the morning as you tend to clench, or at least close your fist in the night. I slept with my hand under my pillow to keep it flat and that worked a treat. Apparently your midwife - if you have one, i haven't seen one yet - can provide you with a splint. otherwise I got my Osteopath on the case.

HQ, on the subject of slings - i bought a mamas and papas one because it is similar to Baby Bjorn but has a hood and is £20 cheaper. My boobs are a f/g cup and it seems ok on me.

modsaluk · 26/11/2007 13:40

Oh preggers hope you are keeping your spirits up and i dont mean the alcoholic type lol.

Had to buy new jacket today my coats will not zip or fasten over my bump now, i am a size 18 normally but had to get a size 26 so will have space as my bump grows, size 22 feels comfortable at the moment but just over half way so will grow lots more i think. Anyway found one i sort of like in new look and was only £35.00 i did not like spending that even though as not going to be wearing it for that long but got to keep them babies warm.

I am talking Gaviscon on a daily basis again think my babies are going to have a head of hair, according to the wives tales.

Hope you are all well.

merryberry · 26/11/2007 13:44

ouch pgagain, ouch. god bless codeine, i found.

have just agreed pre-school start for ds1 on 21 Jan (3 mornings a week). its a montessori with intense and long settling in period. god i hope i make it through my 9th month OK, and he has time to get used to it before the world turns upside down with ds2 arriving!

tori32 · 26/11/2007 14:04

Hi everyone, hope you are all ok. Its just occurred to me that I haven't been on here for weeks.

I have been really busy recently.
So far I think I have eaten enough for a pg elephant and am quickly starting to look like one Have put on 25lbs Really weird that I am still in my normal 14 jeans.

So far I have sorted out my antenatal classes as last time I didn't get round to it! I have also contacted the NCT breast feeding counsellor as I didn't get good advice last time either.

How is everyones xmas shopping doing? I can happily report that 90% of mine is done, including ordering the turkey (not at all like me to be organised!LOL)

LOL at turtles very strange peanut tangerine combo

Hope you are ok preggers and recovered from your fall.

spugs · 26/11/2007 15:24

HQ - i have a baby bjorn and like it (have small boobs though) my friend is using it at the min and she is a d cup and she loves it. think ill need to surgically remove it when i want it back. as for a pram suit i would get one if your using a sling as you cant just pile the blankets on them.

i havent bought the matching carseat for my bugaboo as i still have dd2s, i am thinking about it though as i do the school runand the thought of having to get baby in and out of car seat as well as dealing with stroppy 7 yr old and 2 year old doesnt really bear thinking about. anyone know where i can get a maxi cosi cheap? preggers do you do mumsnet rates
