Not very original, but the thread WAS becoming ridiculously big.

OP posts:

That's amazing, mb.

merryberry · 05/01/2008 10:43

it's lovely isnt it, thank gm.

john lewis to debenhams. hmmm. never done that in one go tho', always get suckered into house of fraser...

preggersagain · 05/01/2008 14:23

hello ladies- how are the swollen ankles and puffy fingers

The consultant is saying that the twins should be home within 7 to 10 days as long as they have both gained weight from their birth weights and are feeding on their own without the tube feeds- we are astounded, i had thought that we wouldn't be getting them home until nearly the end of January!!

so i am making the most of quiet evenings in the hot tub at the moment- (we have to leave the hospital by 8pm before i get shot down apparently its hospital procedure!!) it won't be long before i won't have time to remember my own name!!

i have also got very intimate with my breast pump- i can reccomend the avent IQ duo and have also had a quick 'fling' with the medela swing- that was even more effective but is a single pump!

skidoodle · 05/01/2008 18:45

awwww merryberry, that is just too cute. feed baby! amazing

I decided to take preggers's advice [btw I love how on a list where being pregnant is decidedly not a useful identifying characteristic we have some called preggers and now she's the only one of us who isn't ) and start getting my shit together. So we went into town to look at/buy a cot. Before we managed to get to mothercare I met my auntie and she told us she had 2 in her attic and we could have one of them. So that was easy

I also insisted on getting a book of baby names for us to peruse. I'm slightly obsessed with names so although we've mostly decided I want to think about it a bit more.

One of the books we looked at had a section on unusual Irish names. I had a look and of the the suggestions was Beacan (pronounced something close to BACKawn).

Well no wonder it's not that popular a name - it's the Irish word for mushroom

DontlookatmynoseImRudolph · 05/01/2008 20:00

Preggers - hope you do get your twins home that soon. You must be really excited

MB - how old is your ds. He sounds so cute. My ds is 2.3 and is doing similar things. Tried feeding one of Christmas choccies to the baby last night via my belly button.

Deffo get yourselves organised with the nurseries. 1st time round we made the mistake of thinking that since the baby would be with us for the 1st 6 months anyway, we would have plenty of time to sort the nursery out. HAhahaha. Ds finally moved out of our room for the 1st time tonight! and his room still isn't done up for him. Admittedly we did move house when he was 10 weeks old but that's still given us 2 years to get it done. So I'm feeling a bit emotional (hormones grrr) tonight. I'll miss him. No.2 is definately not staying that long though , maybe

derah · 05/01/2008 21:30

Preggers - that's very cool that your twins will be home soon. It must be hard to be away from them, and kinda weird too.

I've been putting off getting anything organised until the new year, but now it is new year so time to get cracking. There's not much to do cos I've got pretty much everything from DD. And I don't want to spend much money until after next pay day cos we spent too much on holiday! But we're off to Ikea soon to get DD a proper bed and a new bigger chest of drawers for the girls' room. There's only room for one chest of drawers in there but the one we have is so full of DD's clothes we'd never fit baby's stuff in there too. I've also got to get stuff down from the loft, which I should do before I get too big to fit through the hatch!!!

I think I'll put off most of the organising until I'm on maternity leave at the end of the month though. Yay! Only 4 more weeks of work!! I was a bit sad giving notice at DD's nursery though.... they'll miss her and she'll miss all her friends.

MB - that's so cute about your DS! DD knows there's a baby in there too, and kisses and hugs my bump. Not sure if she entirely gets it, and will probably be somewhat surprised when there's suddenly a baby around! But she's so cute with babies I hope she'll be thrilled to get one on a permenent basis!

Oh, and I love the scooter/pram thingie that MB posted a link to! Gotta get one!!!

Anyone else suddenly completely knackered again? Not sure if I'm still recovering from the flight home (overnight 12 hours and didn't sleep a wink) or if it's a preggie thing. But I've been dead on my feet from about 8:30 the past couple of nights.

Enough rambling from me, off to bed now....

fitnforty · 05/01/2008 21:49

evening all!
Preggers, belated congrats on not being Preggers any more, hope they're home soon and feeding like good uns.
HAve been wondering which pump to get, would you say the medela is good if you've only got one little mouth to feed then?

Had to work all week bar tuesday so feeling shattered after my 7.30 finish tonight. Tomorrow we are possibly clearing out the boxes from the nursery-to-be and dismantling the bed in there in preparation for redecorating... however m/w threw a spanner in the works by saying she'll pop round tomorrow provided she doesn't get called out tonight. So there goes my lie-in and have to do a manic tidy up now in case she pops up for the "risk assessment" .

Lodger still firmly ensconced in the room, still taking over the fridge and freezer and generally still just here. Didn't bat an eyelid when i mentioned the fact that i'd be "term" in 5 wks, obviously doesn't realise there's a bit of stuff to do in the meantime!

Anyway, at least i get another 3 days leave to take before 6th feb as a result of working today and NY Eve. Will try to make it some 4 day weeks to tide me over to end Jan, though can't do next week (auditors in) or last week in Jan (month end again!).

Not feeling too knackered surprisingly, have slept well last few nights without ridiculous early morning toilet breaks. Indigestion back with a vengeance though and still coughing hard enough to give birth accidentally!

HolidaysQueen · 06/01/2008 08:36

LOL fitnforty - every time I sneeze I'm convinced the baby is going to get squeezed out accidentally

We're off for our first big baby shop today. Hoping to find non-twee wallpaper or border to decorate the nursery with, and also planning to buy a cot, plus anything else that is on sale. SIL has offered to lend us a lot of stuff which we'll get in a week or two, so suddenly my list of purchases has got a lot of ticks (well, almost ticks) next to it, so I'm now feeling a bit more organised.

derah, I had a 5.5 hour flight back on Tuesday night and it has taken me a good few days to feel normal again. On the way out we had 3 seats between the two of us so I was able to stretch out so it was a complete shock being crammed into a seat with hardly any leg room on the way home, especially as the baby was moving the whole time. I was physically really tired and was very glad I had the rest of last week off work.

Back to work tomorrow, but only 6 weeks to go, and 4 day weeks at that. Yay! Should find out in the next couple of weeks if I have a job to go back to or if I am redundant - have worked out that either is fine due to good redundancy pay off and it giving me options post baby to look for part time work or stay off a bit longer, but my pride will be hurt if I don't get a job!

merryberry · 06/01/2008 10:08

don'tlook, he's 2.6 tomorrow lovely age, bar the occassional tantrum!

sorryt os brief, off to try and catch up with sense&sense from last monday...

surprisedandexcitedmum · 06/01/2008 20:00

Okay, n the spirit of counting down today I have achieved 2 things:

A bumper shop of the last few things from Mothercare and...

we went to visit the labour suite at the hospital. I must say I foun it all a little overwhelming and the idea that very soon we will be having our little girl there, bought more than a tear to my eye .

So I guess with our first NCT class on Friday labour planning (as much as you can) has begun!

Glammama · 06/01/2008 22:54

MB- How great is Sense and Sensibility? I ca't wait till next week, there's a duel . I'll be cheering Colonel Brandon on....he's lovely, is that David Morrissey. I am feeling ridiculously enamoured of the smouldering types at the moment......wonder if it'll last.

A fellow mumsnet on here and myself have made exactly the same error in room and cot measuring. If you're tight on space, remember to take into account skirting boards .

Tomorrow is my first proper day or maternity leave as I'll have the place to myself. An extremely mucky kitchen floor and a huge pile of (luckily clean) washing awaits. How exciting.

Take care all of you, and sweet dreams. I for one hope to be dreaming of Colonel Brandon's foil, ahem.

skidoodle · 07/01/2008 07:33

glamma - LOL I've been finding myself enamoured of very macho types. I've been watching (or re-watching) stupid action movies and have been thinking "mmm, now that's a REAL man that could look after you in all kinds of situations" of Samuel Jackson in Snakes on a Plane, and Nicolas Cage in Con Air .

Right time to do a little yoga. I can barely bend over, I'm not sure there's really any point.

JFly · 07/01/2008 11:26

Funny, skidoodle, I start yoga this week and am wondering what I was thinking, as I have to have DH tie my shoes for me. Bending and whatnot is a bit of a chore. Not sure how I'm going to cope with yoga! At least there will be people around to help me up.

I did a pilates course earlier, but it was so very gentle that there wasn't much effort needed. I'm hoping this class is a bit more energetic but not too much so! I hope I last the whole 6 weeks!

PurlyQueen · 07/01/2008 15:17

The best bit about yoga is the 10-minute snooze at the end!

I am so envious of those of you who are on maternity leave - I'm starting to get really tired now. After my antenatal appointment I had to come home for a nap.

Bought a copy of Davina's pre and post-natal workout DVD at Tesco for a fiver on Saturday. Needless to say, it's still looking pristing in its cellophane wrapper!

surprisedandexcitedmum · 07/01/2008 16:02

PQ, you are not alone in your envy. I travelled into the city for today but when, by 11:00 I found myself sneaking a dose in the loo, I realised that I really was too under the weather and exhausted to be there. I think I have a cold coming, so I'm typing this from my bed where I have just been sound asleep for the last 2 hours!

To my dissapointment the only exercise I seem to be doing these days is my one-2-one pilates! I'd planned to be such a fit mum-to-be.

piggyp · 07/01/2008 18:32

Very jealous of those of you starting maternity leave! Awful shock of return to work today + I think I got speed camera'ed!

The nappylady has recomended bumbles nappies to me - any experiences?

skidoodle · 07/01/2008 19:00

JFly - well I managed some sun salutations this morning, so it's definitely possible. It will be lovely to do a class with other pregnant ladies and I'm sure your teacher will really look after you in terms of appropriate poses. Although, is anyone else getting tired of cat/cow pose?

PurlyQueen LOL @ "the snooze at the end"

surprisedandexcitedmum - I know, me too. I had planned to be super fit and eat really healthily but it all went astray right from the start when I felt so lousy just wanted to snooze and eat things with mayonnaise. Oh well am starting to belatedly get my act together, although all I'm managing is a tiny bit of yoga and walking the 2 miles or so home from work. That said, one-to-one pilates sounds pretty intense

derah · 07/01/2008 19:41

Piggy - Bumbles rock!! I'd recommend them as the best nappy ever. But they can be a little big on a newborn, so if finances allow, get some of their little cousin, the Bimble, for the first couple of months. When I had DD, Bimbles only came in newborn but apparently they have bigger ones now, if you'd rather go through the sizes rather then get the birth-to-potty Bumble.

My only gripe with Bumbles is that they're white and I like funky colours. But if you go direct to the people who make them (Easy Peasy Nappies) there are some coloured ones.

Oooh, I just had a look at the website to make sure I had the address right and it looks like they have bamboo ones now. Oh dear, now I need one!!

merryberry · 07/01/2008 21:22

flying visit to say how much dp and i larfed our arses off at UCH's water birth prep vid. It was based around russian experiences and started, gloriously, with a gothic script bible quote, religious music and a helicopter ride over the black sea coastal crags...both of us fell around laughing(before we saw the women in fish tanks, the men's 70s porn 'taches or the breaking of the ice prior to the third trimester swims...) because it was nothing more nor less than the opening sequence to a russian orthodox 'Father Ted'.

merryberry · 07/01/2008 21:34

am basically posting in the gaps between wire in the blood

marchmum, didn't you already see this vid? did you also revel in it like we did?

fitnforty · 07/01/2008 21:45

My m/w is completely loopy but lovely all the same. Turned up and hour late on Sunday as she'd been helping new mums with their breastfeeding so ran late, then spent at least an hour poss more with me going over my birth plan. Got handed all the paperwork I need to fill in for the homebirth, which she'll collect again in 2 weeks when back from her holiday.
M/w if very excited at the thought of seeing a hypno-birth, so chances are one of the others will be on duty when my time comes She also has never managed to be on duty to see a water birth, but says they're all happy for us mums to hire birthing pools, as long as we're aware the m/ws may not be trained. This doesn't seem to tally with what most people say where they have to get out of the pool for the actual birth...she said they've read all the theory so if we're happy to let 'em assist we can try the birth in the water! All seems very relaxed.
The only bit she said she's a bit worried about is my request for natural delivery of placenta as if there's any haemorraging, that's every m/w's nightmare as it can happen so quickly. However, she did say it takes approx 1/2 hour after the birth to get the baby breastfeeding and do the paperwork, so by that time the placenta should be on its way hopefully without any need for the injection.
Felt very positive after her visit, still got to go to the surgery tomorrow though for my next measure-in!
Oh, and no news on lodger-removals yet.

fitnforty · 07/01/2008 21:48

Merry, that video sounds like the one we saw at the end of the hypno course, the fishtanks were so yukky! Did yours have a m/w delivering her own baby with her other daughter waiting at the side trying to catch it as it came out?

merryberry · 07/01/2008 21:50

that's the one! it just needed a vodka drinking father jack in an armchair to complete it, in our opinion

i mean the births were lovely, as always, and the fish tanks make more sense than our hot tubs. but...but....

fitnforty · 07/01/2008 22:45

it was the soft focus close up of the bird with curly hair and too much blusher combined with the porn music....yep.

HolidaysQueen · 08/01/2008 09:57

fitnforty - if your lodger hasn't left by the time you go into labour then I imagine he'll be leaving pretty sharpish if you're having a homebirth Alternatively, perhaps you can purloin a copy of that video and watch it with him...

My good intentions went out of the window as well - for the last six months I've been my usual slobby self, but with less wine and slightly more vegetables. I guess even pregnancy can't change our inherent nature... However, I too am starting yoga tonight - it's with an active birth teacher and involves 75 mins of yoga and then 15 mins of nattering to other mums, having a drink and maybe even meeting recent graduates of the class to hear their birth stories. The best bit is the same teacher does a postnatal yoga class for mums and babies so I can graduate onto that - that's one day a week I'll be able to get out of the house! Just need to find something for the remaining six...
