Not very original, but the thread WAS becoming ridiculously big.

Must ask: did anyone see that "My Fake Baby" programme last night? It was like watching a train wreck, I couldn't look away. It was about these totally freaky dolls called "reborns" that look like realistic babies. Sounds like there's a community of people out there who collect them. One woman they featured takes hers out in a pram. Seriously odd yet captivating television!

JFly · 03/01/2008 16:57

HQ what's on your shopping list, if you don't mind? I'm 9 weeks away (today!) too, but only have bought a co-sleeper, dresser and have a couple babygros that were gifts. Totally not sure what are the essentials. Have my sister-in-law putting together her list for me, but always nice to know what everyone else is buying.

Anyone else got a good list to share?

HolidaysQueen · 03/01/2008 17:30

JFly - I saw that documentary - compelling, but very very weird. I felt so sorry for the people that buy them but at the same time felt they were just plain daft!

I spent a bit of time on holiday looking at the Mothercare catalogue working out what I think I need to get so do have a fairly large list now (just bought a couple of bits today so been able to tick some things off - yay!). I'm happy to email it to you if you think it would be useful - send me an email to [email protected] and I'll reply with it. Also this discussion has some useful stuff listed.

MerlinsBeard · 03/01/2008 17:52

imjin, what alovely post I am doing ok thanks. I struggle at this time of year anyway and 31st Dec is when my LO should be celebrating a birthday so i struggle a wee bit more now. Don't know if its normal or not to mark out birthdays after a mmc (or any MC) but she should have been 1 this year, feels all wrong to be PG again at mo

JFly · 03/01/2008 18:02

Thanks HQ, will email and check out that thread....

JFly · 03/01/2008 18:13

Mumofmonsters, I'm not sure of your specific situation, but having had my first pregnancy end in MC earlier this year, I sympathize with how difficult it is to think about what would have been. I am so pleased to be pg now, and so soon after the MC, but my due date would have been just about now and that's a bit tough to deal with.
But it is wonderful to have this baby to look forward to in March. I hope that you aren't too overwhelmed by it all.

derah · 03/01/2008 18:26

Hello ladies

Congratulations Preggers!! And welcome to Amelia and Cerys. I'm so pleased that they're doing so well. YAY!!!

Well, we had a lovely holiday, lots of sunshine, sitting about and generally relaxing. Very odd to come home to snow!! But the bed in our cottage was tiny and very creaky, so I'm very happy to be back home to my big comfy bed!

Piggy - can you find out if your local council has a nappy scheme and maybe even a nappy advisor? I do occasional nappy advice for Surrey County Council but don't know where you are. There are so many great nappies out there, and different ones suit different mums and babies. I'd reccommend a two-part system (not prefolds like Bambino Mio etc) with nappy nippers for the best fit. Tots Bots are good, and bamboo nappies are lovely but don't work with nippas as the pile of the fabric shrinks over time. I found fleece-lined nappies better anyway as you don't need to add a liner every time and they keep baby drier. Try www.thenappylady.co.uk for some good advice. Best thing is to try to see the nappies in real life and get proper idea of what they look/feel like and how they work.

skidoodle · 03/01/2008 19:12

welcome back derah, glad to hear you're so relaxed - a bit of a contrast from the last time you were on here

JFly - yes I saw that show, it terrified me. those fake babies were horrible - as one woman's husband said, they looked like little corpses. The women who had them seemed really messed up. shudder.

How do so many of you know how your baby is/was positioned? I have no clue. I have a doctor's appointment on Monday, so perhaps I'll find out then.

piggyp · 03/01/2008 20:11

Thanks Derah, glad you enjoyed your holiday. The nappylady site is very useful!

Kirst2 · 03/01/2008 20:50

Hello - new to this board! I've posted on the pregnancy board about my waters going at 28 weeks (3 weeks ago tomorrow). Was in hospital until NYE but home now, just going in for checks a couple of times a week. Had the steroids in case baby early but he / she is hanging in there and I have no signs of infection, so I'm hoping to put a few more weeks in. It means I've finished work earlier than planned (I work in HR so am available for free advice re maternity leave, rights etc!!) and am unashamedly relaxing, to the point where if I'm not going out of doors for any reason I'm living in PJ's!!!

This will be baby #2 - I have a little boy (Connor) who's almost 4. First pregnancy went like a dream and the little man was 10 days late, so everyone is now convinced this one will be a girl (and trouble!). And I live in the NW.

In terms of positioning, mine is breech, but only know that because of the scans being weekly now. Am hoping he / she will turn despite not having much water to play in. The midwives can sometimes tell if baby is head up or down just by feeling your tummy, but it depends what position it's in other than that.

turtle23 · 03/01/2008 20:53

skidoodle..Mine is cephalic, ROA. In other words his head is down, lying on the right, spine to the right, facing centre of tummy. Apparently. I still can't feel it!

DontlookatmynoseImRudolph · 03/01/2008 22:45

Congratulations to preggersagain and welcome to Amelia and Carys.

Skidoodle - I can't work out which way round baby is either, although when I feel something large and solid I assume it's either a head or a bottom lol but then 5 minutes later it'll be in a totally different position anyway

It suddenly seems very close now Christmas is out of the way. Starting to panic/worry about the birth now. I had an early cs because of placenta previa last time, so as far as the labour and birth bit go I'll be a first-timer Anyone else out there going for a VBAC?

spugs · 04/01/2008 09:13

hiya kirst, glad you found us

i only know this ones head down as mw had a prod and told me, has back on right hand side and kicks on left. it does still move around a fair bit though.

couldnt get to sleep last night cos i kept thinking about giving birth and this is my 3rd!

hopefully going swimming later to do my beached whale impression, got a lovely tankini from topshop but havent used it yet. hopefully a swim will sort my back out

merryberry · 04/01/2008 09:30

ooohm with you on the back ache! have asked dp to pick me up a decent yoga mat today so i can practice more at home. i tried over xmas but found the one i had too slippy on our floors.

hello Kirst!

i had a very complicated dream last night about moving all of us to one of my childhood homes. it was so detailed (and pleasant) it was amazing, and persisted through several visits to the loo. PG dreams really are so vivid aren't they?

finally found a cot i like, it was delivered pronto. so its soon time to start the nesting for me. looking forward to bringing out the pieces from ds1, i expect that will bring back hordes of happy and extremely tired memories.

i'm 32 weeks tomorrow and looking forward to starting the hypnotherapy stuff in earnest from then.

HolidaysQueen · 04/01/2008 09:42

Morning all.

Hello Kirst - am confused as IRL I'm Kirsty and known as Kirst to lots of friends so everyone saying hello to you feels like they're saying hello to me!

Naive first-timer question for you all: I've read that the baby's room should be kept between 16C and 18C which seems quite cold. If we are planning to have the baby in our room for the first few months, does that then mean that we need to keep our room at 16-18C as well? I'm going to freeze if so!!!

Had an interesting first day of third trimester yesterday - turned up at doctors only to find out my appt was Friday not Thursday. I even had the appt card in my bag but was so convinced the appt was then that I hadn't even checked it! Ooops . So consequently I had pointlessly added a 20 min walk onto my journey to the shops and then took 35 mins to walk home rather than the usual 15-20mins because I'd completely exhausted myself. Spent the rest of the evening on the sofa with my feet up and whimpering cos I was so tired and feeling quite daft...

MumOfBillyTheKid · 04/01/2008 10:11

Welcome Kirst!

HQ - sorry to hear about getting day wrong - my pregancy brain has been playing up with work stuff now and then, but that didn't involve an un-necessary walk! Hopefully LO enjoyed the exercise

I had regular check-up with MW yesterday. LO all fine, measuring normal, heart rate 130-140, BP fine and MW told me my LO was head down (not engaged) - can feel hard bit running down right hand side of my tummy which I assume is spine/back/bum.

Like spugs, LO usually kicks on the left (or digs the occasional foot under ribs) and must punch my bladder now and then - so, assume position is same as turtle (didn't know official name for it though! - thanks Turtle )

Mind you, like everyone else, LO moves around (sometimes I can feel it across tummy - transverse)... guess it's making use of the room it still has at the mo!

DP nearly finished painting nursery - can't wait to get carpet in and start accessorising it! Better order pram etc soon! Have done a list for my friends who are throwing me a baby shower of other bits and pieces we want.

Getting excited (and a bit scared) now - time is flying by! Got ante-natal day tomorrow.

surprisedandexcitedmum · 04/01/2008 10:40

I know in all my scans and examinations she is head-down but either she fidgets a lot or this LO is a breakdancer - you know the ones who spin around on their heads with their legs out at right angles.

Jfly and Mumofmonsters - my first pregnancy ended in miscarriage in February. That little girl - becasue I'm sure she was a little girl will never be forgotten. It has taken ages for me to get it into my mother's head that I shan't be calling this one the name I always planned to call my little girl, because in my head I've already used that name.

As for organisation: I have just bought the most expensive high chair - just because I loved it (and it can be used from birth) and I can't wait for the pram we ordered in October to be delivered at the end of the month. I posponed the delivery because of superstition and now I want to play!

Less than 9 weeks to go...

JFly · 04/01/2008 11:13

Suprised know what you mean about superstition - when we were in the States in october DH wouldn't let me buy anything! I did sneak 2 outfits b/c they were so tiny and darn cute. Which high chair did you get? I want the Tripp Trapp. Such great colours.

Last GP visit said baby is head down but still time for it to shift - if they are unsure where it is at 36 weeks they will scan. Definitely still moving a lot and often feel it shoved over to the right side. Wonder if the placenta is in the way or something.

Oh, I want a baby shower! I'm from the States originally and that is definitely what we do there. Hopefully I'll get some nice pressies from friends and family there. Also plan to go back after baby born to take advantage of weak $$!

turtle23 · 04/01/2008 11:50

I grew up in the states as well, and feel slightly cheated by no baby shower!! Am making up for it by buying myself presents.

OP posts:
surprisedandexcitedmum · 04/01/2008 11:55

I am resolutely British but DP is from South Africa so they have showers. Our compromise as I'm not sure I could cope with a full on shower, is to have a party in one of our favourite bars. It means I don't have to be embarressed about the presents thing.

Also I have always been told you shouldn't have the pram in the house before the baby, but in order to be prepared it's coming soon! I love the Trapp but must confess to splurging on the Fresco Bloom chair.

JFly · 04/01/2008 11:57

Good plan, turtle! I like your style.

Am secretly making a list of American stuff I want. I have four older sisters, so perhaps they will do a "virtual" shower for me. I will suggest it!

Glammama · 04/01/2008 12:05

Hello all. I'm sorry to hear about people's previous miscarriages. Thinking of you all at this time.
Also a big welcome to Kirst2. It's funny you mentioning you work in HR as I'm just in the process of getting support from Unison to establish my legal position as my HR have told me I'm not eligible for maternity pay/leave as my post will finish March 31st due to no more funding. This is from a Council who has employed me since Sept 98 and I have been in the same post for over 2 years. One HR professional even told me it wouldn't be fair on my non pregnant colleague if we both lost our jobs but I continued to get maternity pay. And this all happened as I was walking to out the door on the Friday before Christmas when I left to go on annual and then maternity leave.
It's all a bit of a nightmare tbh!

Anyway, enough of all that. This baby is actually causing me some eye watering moments of agony. I swear he has obtained a very sharp stick which he scrapes along my pelvic floor. And when he gets bored of that he scrapes it up by my ribs. He reminds me of my DD when she passes railings with a stick in her hand!! And when he's bored of scraping I think he's practising for Olympic gymnast/kickboxing/breakdancing competitions. And if he doesn't move for a while, DD shouts (gently) at him through my tummy button to wake him up.
Does anyone else's have distinct sleeping patterns? This one is so like his father and won't normally materialise till after 11am!!Unless I'm feeling mean and drink a glass of very cold water
Right, I'm off to check on my lunch before going back to bed. I treated myself to four hefty paperbabcks in Smiths just after Christmas and I'm making the most of DD spending the day at her dad's.
Happy New Year to all.Sending you hugs and best wishes.
I'm 31 weeks today which means only 6 weeks (gulp)till 37 weeks and full term!!!

JFly · 04/01/2008 12:27

Argghhh, don't say full term! That scares the crap out of me. I'm so screwed if this baby arrives early. Getting on to making my shopping list STAT!

Glammama · 04/01/2008 12:35

LOL Jfly.
I'm sure you won't be as screwed as we are! Baby will be in with us as 2nd room taken by DD. In the process of decorating (i.e I started painting 2.5 years ago and the paper is sitting on top of the wardrobe.) Plus we currently have no carpet in here, which is a nice touch I think.......
My cot is in Manchester, in pieces and not sure when it's coming. Have boobs and sling though so should survive if worst happens!
