Breastfeeding and alcohol

Your G&Ts are safe

bobsmum · 07/02/2008 22:34

As long as there are only a couple...

Good advice with "sober enough to drive = sober enough to breastfeed'.

MrsVO · 08/02/2008 08:25

Hello all - been a long time! enjoyed catching up with threads - especially baby name chats. it is so tricky. and friends can really put a downer on what one thinks are great' choices. my married surname is van oestren. for ages i thought the name Cara was lovely. it is. but then a friend pointed out that our child would be called caravan oestren. oh dear!! so sometimes its best to put the names out there!!!

on another note. my dh really wants a 4d scan. like really really. but for some reason i don't. we know we could have it without finding out the sex(which is good for us) but for some reason i feel it will spoil the suprise of the baby. do i want to know it already looks like me, or dh, or mum or whoever??? any suggestions from people. i guess there is no real compromise (unless i just don't look!!)

bobsmum · 08/02/2008 08:30

i've got a 30 week scan next Friday, but it's just a hospital one.

If money and time were no object to us then I think I might consider a 4D scan. But I have to be honest, if I had up to £100 plus hanging around there are other baby related things I would splash out on - like gorgeous professional photos after the birth.

I'm just going to wait the 10 weeks now and see the real deal soon enough

mumofk · 08/02/2008 09:32

bobsmum thanks for the link to km- that answered my wondering- but as smelling a good drink got/gets me tiddly I'd always be over the limit for bfing!
mrsvo- not sure how helpful this might be- but even when mucking about with 3/4D my DD looked just the same as the posters you see with 3d scans on- don't think it'll actually spoil the surprise of what you DC will look like. So many people say DC has someones nose after a scan- even 2d- and they are just seeing what they want to, honest!

jacobandlysetteandabump · 08/02/2008 09:38

hi everyone and welcome all new people! sorry not been on for a long while but laptop been poorly but now all better again

wolverina - i know it's difficult when you have a parent / IL there that you don't think will be that much help. you have even more right to be snappy / short tempered / not take any sh*t from anyone after the baby is born than when you are pg i know it's hard though. my MIL is coming and thank goodness FIL isn't as i can't keep a civil tongue in my head where he is concerned he is so lazy and childish. but lets not start that rant again!

who was asking about bfing? sorry have just scanned. alcohol is fine as it passes through the bloodstream and milk - you just need to time it so you're not g&t in one hand and baby bfing in the other . i found that ds was fine with anything i ate but his poo was particularly vile the day after i'd eaten spicy food

we used grobags from when ds was big enough to go in them - you can get newborn ones from 7lbs and they are superb - they're just a brand of the sleeping bag and we have a mixture of different makes. he is still in them now at 19m, but preparing to come out of them soon when we have to put him into a big boys bed for when lo (sam we have decided on) is out of the moses basket and into cot bed (we moved ds fairly early on so will probably do the same with sam tbh).

anyway, enough of my rambling will catch up on posts in next couple of days and post more replies.

aussisim hope all goes well with your tests - reminded me i had 28 week scan this week and baby is on 45th centile in terms of growth which for us is brilliant - ds never got anywhere near that and then stopped growing at around 30 weeks. hoping i can keep this one in a bit longer than 32 weeks - fingers toes and legs crossed!

xxx

Hi everyone just checking it.

Welcome to all the new comers. There are so many of us due the same time!!

MrsStressHead- The baby looks lovely and has the cutest little mouth!!!

I'm totally struggling diet wise.. what on earth do I eat? I've posted this elsewhere, but just wondered if I'm eating enough/too much each day. I've cut down because was really overeating for a while. Is this enough/too much:
1)Banana
2)small jacket tato with cottage cheese and pineapple
3)chicken breast in tomato and basil with mash and buttered mixed veg.

I've always been either a massive overeater or a real dieter. Total extremes. So need a little help on what i should be eating.. and can I lose some of this weight while I'm pregnant? I have to order my wedding dress 3 months after I have the baby. But don't want to deprive him of his food.

My friend just had her little baby girl and she's sooooooooooo lovely!!! It's made me even more broody and desperate to welcome our babba in 13 weeks!!!

Hope everyone's doing well.

xx

newbishad · 08/02/2008 20:00

Dear all,

Just saying hello because I haven't posted for a while.I am really, really excited about my baby (EDD May 29th) because I have waited 4 1/2 years for him/her. It is also nice to see the July and August group reach second trimester and the April group the thrid trimester. It means we're either about to enter the third trimester or already have. It helps me count the days....
Anyway I have had a reasuring scan but still don't know the flavour because the cord was in the way.
Keep in touch!

jacobandlysetteandabump · 09/02/2008 05:57

hey everyone

just a quick one as i'm on here in a desperate attempt to tire myself out to get back to sleep after dh kindly called me from his conference in NY asking if we were up yet, at 4am UK time.

mumblesmummy - to me it looks like you could have a little more than you are having food wise from that little list? are you having any snacks in the day? most important thing (easily said believe me......) is to snack on healthy stuff rather than empty calories (which incidentally i am eating a lot of right now). i was told that by this time you probably need the equivalent of an extra 4 slices of bread a day, in carbs, and then instead of 5 a day fruit and veg, you should try and get 8 in. luckily i've been craving oranges so this isn't a problem for me, although i do look rather off at the supermarket with a basket full or oranges and orange juice and not much else

here's what i get through on a being good day - i won't embarass myself with a cake laden day

breakfast toast with a smidgen of marmite or vegemite, with orange juice and a yoghurt

mid morning 2 oranges

lunch soup - at the moment it's squash and sweet potato or fresh tomato soup, with some fresh bread, followed by banana - or a jacket potato with butter instead of soup, glass of apple or orange juice

mid afternoon cup of organic muesli with skim milk or a couple of oranges / clementines

dinner (generally eaten too late after ds has gone to bed) - grilled meat (lamb or chicken) with salad and some potatoes if i remember to cook them, or shep pie / lasagna etc, couple of oranges or apples (for a change!), glass of orange juice

before bed activia yoghurt as it seems to help with the midnight heartburn!

you'll see an orange pattern emerging above...

also through the day am making sure i have 2l of water.

god it sounds like all i do is drink and eat!

the orange juice is great for helping with iron absorption in food and someone told me that tea with food is really bad for it so if anyone is needing extra iron don't have tea with any meals. i also have probably 3 cups of tea (decaf) a day, although they are all generally reheated at least twice in the microwave!

must admit that yesterday lunch consisted of chocolate pudding and chocolate sauce eaten at about 4pm as we have plumbers in and i missed lunch totally, so no good girl halo for me.

anyway hope this helps a bit.

macaco · 09/02/2008 09:27

Wow you're very healthy!

My daily intake goes something like this

breakfast
small bowl fruit and fibre
glass of juice
slice of wholegrain toast with LASHINGS of butter and jam
cup of tea

lunch
chicken and salad or fish and salad, but BIG portions
activia yoghurt
cup of tea

snacks
whatever's in staffroom, usually couple of biscuits or a donut or chewy bar, perhaps a banana

dinner
slice of wholegrain SMOTHERED in philadelphia with sliced tomato on top
yoghurt
square of chocolate
glass of juice

That's during the week. Actually now I've written it down it doesn't look as bad as I thought.

How's everyone's bump? Mine's got a life of its own, keeps going all pointy and has got massive in the last fornight

mumofk · 09/02/2008 12:59

Hmm what do I eat?
Usually bowl of porridge made with full fat milk, sometimes blueberries in it (eating with DD so depends what she fancies), I take 3 tortilla wraps cut in halves to work , usually cheese and pickle (otherwise I eat far too much bread) and a 200 ml box of soup from the freezer- think its lentil this week, with an apple and an orange. Tea is usually something like boiled veg, rice or potatoes and some protein, then after DD bedtime we get into the cheese on toast or masses of crips and chocolate.Definately goes downhill during the day! Evenings are comfort food, not really hungry but if I haven't got the laptop on when I'm sat on the sofa I like to eat..not good. Daytimes I have to have healthy-ish snacks (my wraps) as in ultrasound we usually end up with biscuits and chocolate around, so I need something to eat to fill me up. Biscuits don't do that!
Something to make you smile... We went out for a meal with friends last night, first time we've had a sitter for ages. Got all dressed up for me, and after we'd walked a bit, been sat for our meal, etc. I suddenly realised I hadn't been hitching my trousers up all night- fab I thought, bump is finally the right size for these comfy trousers! Went to the loo and realised trousers waist is so long, and had been put on before bra, so bra was actually holding trousers up too. Hmmmm. I suppose it works but felt a bit odd tucking my trousers back into my bra to enjoy the rest of the evening!!!!!
So, if anyone else is having the trouser traumas I am- only jogging bottoms and scrubs stay up without assistance, everything else involves max 4 steps without hitch up ( only none of my other trousers have a long enough waist to try the superbra effect) one more thing to try! I now see why people actually wear dungarees- but not quite ready to invest
Happy weekend everyone,
mumofk

PazzaPlusTwo · 09/02/2008 15:39

Hi May-mums!

Macaco my bump is zeppelin-like and visibly growing by the week. Unfortunately so is my bottom so I should definitely start eating like all you healthy people.

Anyone else getting really heavy legs in the evenings? I literally have to put them up in the air for an hour when I get home from work.

Babes are a-kickin' and wrigglin' now which is really great - can't wait to see them and hold them! Isn't it cruel we have to wait so long!!! Mind you the longer they can stay in and cook the better.

xxP

sweetbean · 10/02/2008 10:22

Hi all

Still have major computer problems but that's another story !!other than that im fine and plodding along nicely feel a lot better now the suns shining and have managed to get out and walk miles in the last couple of days which really helps me feel better !!

Mumofk and Bobsmum Thanks for the advise and the link on BF i tried to BF with DD but i didn't have any milk so she just ended up feeding all the time and destroying my norks as she sucked so hard i had terrible blisters and they really hurt and bleed when ever she tried to feed. so i gave up after a week and was very very relived to !!!! But this time would like to try again and feed this one.

MrsVO My Dh is really worried about seeing what the baby looks like before the big day but i think i have managed to convince him that the little one will change a lot in the 10-12 weeks after the scan so it won't be the same as on the scan. I just can't wait as i am total desperate to find out the sex of the baby for definite !!!!

Mrstresshead So lovely to see your 4d pic i can wait to see mine only another 4 weeks to wait (god that seems a long time !!!)Can i ask you could you REALLY see that she was a girl or was it a bit blurry like on the normal scans?? she is beautiful by the way xxxx

podglet · 10/02/2008 11:13

I'm with Mrs stresshead, I'm not telling you the rubbish I eat most days

JBR - hope the move has gone well

Pazza - i try not to look behind me to see how that part is growing too

Mumblesmummy - think you may need to eat a little more but good calories, like fruit or stuff. Can you tell I am not too good at paying attention to my own advice???

All ok here, feels weird to have a bump which is more "normal" size than last time - I measured up to 7 weeks ahead with DS due to excess fluid. Am beginning to worry a little now coz all we have for her is some new born nappies - must get DP into the loft so I can sort through the neutral stuff from DS. I now we have everything, I just don't know where it all is at the moment!

Has anyone else thought about their birth plan yet? I was going to write mine on my first week of mat leave with DS but unfortunately he had other ideas and it didn't happen. I don't know that I will with this one until the consultant has decided what he wants to do - either elective c-section or let me try for a VBAC.

Sorry for esseay - hope everyone is ok.

baiyu · 10/02/2008 11:40

Morning all,
thanks a lot for all the lovely messages after my last post - mrstresshead, blobsmummy, JBR - feel much better to know there is support there. I had a look into NCT classes but nearest ones are a 2 hour drive and I don't have a car. Still, seeing the midwives for the first time sometime next week and they'll tell me about anti-natal classes etc so i can start meeting people.

Anti-natal swim was fantastic! Really enjoyed it. I've treated myself to a gym membership for the next few months (without my DP I'm getting NO exercise ) so it seemed a good idea. Pool is fab but sad i can't go in the lovely warm jacuzzi!

I also have a very pointy bump and the kicks and punches seem to get stronger and more frequent by the day.

I am eating so much at the moment, also too embarassed to list it! But so far I don't appear to be putting on too much weight anywhere else apart from my massive belly. So far so good....

Off to look at everyones new scan pictures, how exciting! i won't be having a 4D scan but at least i can look at other peoples and see roughly how big my little one should be!

Have a great day everyone.

sweetbean · 11/02/2008 08:17

Hello Ladies

Well im yet another one who won't be telling you all what i eat !!!!!! i have to say that i do have good days and bad days but the bad days are bad! I lost a stone in the beginning and have only put 7lb of that back on but unless the sun is shining i can't motivate my self to do anything !!!!! that and my major chocolate and quiche craving (not together!!!!)are not helping ! But im not going to be having anymore babies after the safe arrival of this one so i figure i should at lest try and enjoy it before i have to lose all the weight i put on after DD and this pregnancy as well.

Mrstresshead I can't wait to see the baby im so excited !!!! my scan is actually for sexing the baby as well (we had to pay extra) so hopefully i can get a good look and be 100% certain what we are having xxx

baiyu · 11/02/2008 10:12

Morning May Mums!
Quick question - leg cramps, in my calves at night and extraordinarily painful. Any idea what might be causing this and how to avoid it? Thank you!
First proper scan in Britain tomorrow, so excited!
Hope you all have this gorgeous sunshine, have a great day.

blobsmummy · 11/02/2008 12:04

The sunshine is beautiful here (now that it's broken through the awful fog). I could just curl up into a ball and sleep in the sun - oh, to be a cat!

Baiyu - I get cramps. Got it last pregnancy too and tbh didn't find anything that helped - sorry!

Anyone fancy starting us off on a new thread and linking it to here, now that we're entering the third trimester? I'm really busy at work all today, so haven't got the time right now, but I can do it later if people want.

Baiyu, welcome, I'm in NW Scotland, on the coast so about an hour and a half journey for me. I had me ds in Raigmore and could not fault them, had a wonderful experience, and questions- ask away!

I went through the day before he was born though so no mad high labour journey for me....that time!

Too tired to post much more was just having a quick nosey at how everyone is doing, this week I have been utterly exhausted but my Mum's coming next week for a few days so she'll entertain ds while I catch up on everything else...phew!

macaco · 16/02/2008 10:58

hi everyone, hope you're all well.

sweetbean, don't worry about toxoplasmosis, you have about as much chance of catching it from that as I have of turning into an giraffe. There is SUCH a minimal risk of catching it this way that it's basically non existent. You are FAR more likely (and still not very likely at all in the grand scheme of things) to get it from gardening and not washing the soil off your hands.

I had a fall last night when I got out of bed to go to the loo. I fell on my side and twisted my ankle. I think my leg had gone to sleep from sleeping on my side and I put my full weight on without realising it was asleep and it just crumpled under me. Feeling a bit stiff and sore today.

Been shopping like crazy lately, bought the travel system and put up curtains in the nursery. Only 9 weeks to go now.....aaarrrgh!
