Hello, I'd like to join this thread. My first baby is due 10/5/08 and they told me today its a girl. Pregnancy fine so far apart from large fibroid that has been worrying everyone but that seems to have settled down now.

At 24 weeks, is anyone else getting heartburn after every meal? I am from the states and have been popping Tums antacid tablets from there but we are about to run out - is there a british product that works the same way?

Fleurie76 · 24/01/2008 19:22

Hello all,
Welcome Newbishad and Yankunian.
After following the last couple of pages I've been inspired to put some pictures up but after seeing JBR's lovely neat bump I feel massive!!
Yankunian, I believe the equivalent would be Rennie tablets for heartburn but there are loads available, pop into your nearest Boots and you will probably be spoilt for choice!
Sweetbean - I have had the same busy / quiet days and it worries me too when I feel almost nothing. LO did nothing, absolutely sweet nothing all day on Sunday and I was having a mini panic until I went to bed and got a day's worth of activity in about 5 mins! So I think it's par for the course at this stage. Does anyone know at what stage you are supposed to count a certain number of movements a day? That really will have us worriers out in hives
Hope all who are off work and taking it easy are doing so and that sick DDs and DSs are feeling better
X

pregnabrain · 24/01/2008 21:46

hello all and welcome to the new folk

yankunian - i suffered from heartburn with my last pregnancy. you can get a liquid antacid here called Gaviscon. You can get it free on prescription if you go to your GP. I found it more effective than the tablets. This time, i seem to be carrying really low so no heartburn yet (also no incentive to stop eating. ever. i am massive compared to my last preg).

I'm so bored of waiting for my scan. Still 6 days to go. Grrr.

Baiyou - maybe you could look into hiring a doula for your labour. Then you'll definitely know that you have a back up, just in case your dp is not in the UK when your baby comes. Try not to worry too much about doing the newborn phase without your dp. I found my mum really helpful during the early months, so it sounds like you're in the best possible place!

baiyu · 25/01/2008 04:36

Hello all,

JBR- Yes, my DP will be back for good in July. We'll then have the stresses of our final year at university but at least we'll be tackling it all together and hopefully with lots of free childcare and support from our uni. We're also hopefully getting an already childproofed, well-located university subsidised flat so that should make life easier too! Fingers crossed.

Pregnabrain - I will look into a doula, good idea. I should also have my mum as a birthing parter but I'm going to wait til I get home to discuss it with her. She had 3 so she should be an expert!

Lots of kicks and punches at the moment so very happy, seems to be constantly moving. Bit concerned about my 4 flights in the next week but this little one should be a seasoned traveller by now! Hope everyone is doing well.

Oh dear! I'm sorry, rubbish internet cafe and I can't work out how to delete the extras!! Sorry all.

Yankunian · 25/01/2008 09:54

Ah. Many thanks - will try the rennie and gaviscon. The heartburn is no joke, especially as I'm a restaurant critic and keep having to eat spicy ethnic food for work lately. They're killin' me!

sweetbean · 25/01/2008 14:42

Hi all and welcome all newbies

Well LO is still quite quiet so went to the doc today to see if i could get am appointment with the midwife .... no midwife until Tuesday or wednesday to ended up seeing the doctor who hadn't listened to baby's heart beat in 6 years but she found lo heart beat fine and it was strong the unit at the hospital said that its normal to have different days so i guess that Lo's going through a lazy stage !! i do feel better tho getting it checked out.

Hope everyone else is really well and thanks again for all the support it fab being able to sound thing out with you all im so glad to have you all to talk to (just a shame that im the paranoid fruit cake of the bunch) !!!!!!!! xxx

boabsmum · 25/01/2008 14:51

Sweetbean - if my bump hasn't been active for a while then I grab the most sugary snack I can find and sit down for a while. Babies definite;y get a sugar rush and start breakdancing within minutes! For example this morning I have been mostly eating half a packet of chocolate digestives , and baby just will not sit still!

Also a huge glass of iced water can wake them up too

A friend told me that it's always best to eat a big Mars bar just before you go in for a scan if you want to see a busy baby.

So therefore I prescribe - much Ben&Jerry's for medicinal purposes of course - ice and sugar - baby's bound to wake up

Have changed name for Burn's Night tonight

Mumblesmummy · 25/01/2008 18:53

Sweetbean- When my bump went quiet last week the midwife said it would be because he was facing me. I could only feel the odd kick. He's back to kicking like mad now so I'm sure yours will too. As everyone said- midwife is always a good stop in situations like that just to put your mind at rest if nothing else.

Yankunian- I'm bad for heartburn when i get stressed out. If I down a pint of milk it goes, but it's never far away. Rennies are good. If i chill out the heartburn goes away.

Has anyone else got a hideously itchy tummy??????????? Mine is which i think may be stretch mark related but it's driving me CRAZY. Itch itch itch all the live long day. i rub cream and oil in every few hours but I can't stop it... can anyone help?

Only 15 weeks to goo whoopwhoop. We guna have babies soooooooooooooooooon.

Mumblesmummy · 25/01/2008 18:55

Oh everyone, it also said on watchdog last night something about those home baby heart listeners being bad for mum and baby. Ours doesn't work anyway so we gave up with it the other week. I doubt it's anything serious- but I thought I better warn people

gingerwench · 25/01/2008 19:39

22 week midwife appointment yesterday - all good - baby's heartbeat strong and bump is the "right" size and shape apparently. And this morning we had our private anomaly scan which was excellent - not quite the same degree of emotion as the 12 week one but brilliant nonetheless. All normal, on track for dates and it was lovely to get pics of something that is obviously truly babylike rather than some strange alien. Still don't know the sex because we didn't want to know. I even went as far as buying my first things for the baby - two board books from an art gallery shop almost unconsciously. I suppose it just felt like I was buying presents for someONE rather than someTHING

podglet · 25/01/2008 19:40

Hi all,

Yakunian - what a fab job - it's something I think I would be good at - well I like eating out anyway! Hope the rennies etc work. afraid I didn't have much heartburn with DS and haven't had any at all this time (so far, typing with fingers crossed) so good luck, hope the new cures work

Hi Boabsmum (waves) cool burns night name! I do believe Ben and Jerry's is a good cure for sore throats too so I best have some

JBR - glad you have been signed off, use the time to relax (oh and drive that lush car about!)

Sweetbean, glad you are reassured - don't worry you are certainly not the only fruitcake - you should have seen some of my posts on the ante natal thread with DS!

I have felt so much better today - actually managed to do some stuff and eaten properly too. DS still full of cold and cough

bramblina · 25/01/2008 22:48

Hello everyone!! Haven't been on here in mooonnnths, soo busy over Christmas (I know, everyone's the same, just I seem to manage a little less !) and the business is picking up well.
Pregnancy all going well, got the wonderful thing that is heartburn, almost 24/7 drinking peptac by the gallon and chomping on Rennies. Being kicked a lot, mostly short sharp movements which dh now feeling which is nice. Sacro illiac joint starting to remind me of it's existance so if I've walked slightly further than normal, by 6pm I'm waddling around, so that's most days as I have a 2.5 y old! It was really bad last time so I'm a bit worried how I'll manage at the final stages as dh worrks away, but my sister has booked her flights from Canada and will be with me/us 4th May-1st June (EDD 12May) so ds will just love that.
Mumblesmummy, when I got to 24 weeks I thought Nnnnnnooooo! 16 weeks is not enough time for all the things I have to get done! And you're quite the opposite, you made me laugh!! Good for you. It certainly will fly in. So excuse me if I don't return for 2 more months as I'll be trying to get all my things done! (Though as you can see I tend to waffle so you'll possibly all be glad...!)

coby · 25/01/2008 23:14

Hello all,

My nugget has moments of relative calmness but I'm pretty sure (as already mentioned) it is when he is facing inwards. I suppose I should make the most of it - both DDs were back to back and I'm guessing this one will find that comfy too soon enough . A nice cold can of coke and some chokky does wonders for waking them up(that's my excuse and I'm sticking to it).

Just wondered if anyone else is getting very tired again? I'm 24 weeks now but I am totally exhausted. Having other problems too, not sleeping at all well for weeks now, just want to try and gauge how much of it is down to the pregnancy and how much of it is down to the other stuff . Don't think my iron levels are low - they are due to be checked in about 4 weeks. Getting through the day is really tough, nothing is getting done and it is drving me mad.

Got a photo out of my bump when I was PG with DD2 - I'm bigger now than I was full term with her - think the old tummy muscles have truely given up this time

yankunian I had a friend who drank a small bottle of gaviscon a day towards the end of her pregnancy! It was all that worked for her - hope things don't get that bad for you (think it is pretty rare to get it that bad) but at least it helped her. With my last pregnancy my job involved eating ice cream and chocolate all day - thank goodness I didn't get heartburn (although I did discover mango sorbet worked wonders for my MS!)

newbishad · 26/01/2008 12:30

Dear all,

Thanks for all your messages of welcome! I have only just cottoned onto how the system works which is why I haven't posted more up here. (Absentmindedness of pregnancy! Maybe. I think I'd have been like that anyway.)
It's great to talk to people who are due around the same time as me. I can feel the baby kick most days now. After what I have been through (4 years of infertility and two ectopic pregnancies and IVF) it's the most magical thing. I haven't hit heartburn problems yet but I am only just 22 weeks. My partner and I are trying to decide whether to have our baby in Ireland (where I live) or England (where my family live. Our NHS trust did well in the survey.
Looking forward to talking more.
Take care!

podglet · 26/01/2008 17:46

Hi all, hope you are all having nice weekends - have just put a bump pic taken about 5 mins ago on my profile! Yes, you may all tell me how huge it is...

TJuice · 26/01/2008 18:40

hi ladies

sorry to gatecrash, but i am from the brilliantly supportive "Due in July" thread and wondered if any first-timers here would like to also like to chat a bit about the naive thrills of doing this all for the very first time on . . . www.mumsnet.com/Talk/2290/465075.

cheers!

mrstresshead- last time I was like you with all the gaviscon- only TBH I think I was drinking more!
For me also it was constant, not related to when or what I ate, lying down/sitting up made no difference whatsoever. Got frustrated with GP telling me not to lie down- but all the time I spent walking around/sitting up was awful so what was wrong with lying down??
I didn't actually have a good measure as I would get a bottle off AN/PN ward at work and had one at home- each week! Until one of the consultants saw me and asked what on earth was I doing, here have a script for ranitidine. Wow. Stopped it in its tracks and I realised how much it was getting me down.I took one a day until the day after DD was born, then was fine until this pg. This time is completely different, I've only had one ranitidine ( yesterday!) and been coping with 1 bottle of gaviscon for the last 3 months- really amazing.
I've actually had 4 good days- only a bit tired, and NOT extremely grumpy, which I have been for the last 2.5 months- which has been very enjoyable. though DH gave me the 'look' today when I was giving him driving instructions for somewhere in Leeds we hadn't been before. Maybe I was being a bit hormonal, but not miserable with it!
My SI joints are making themselves known again Hope most of you don't know what I'm talking about! I go to a chiropractor who says I'm doing really well, but still aches/hurts. RIght , better do some yoga!
take care all, give your bump a friendly 'hello' rub from me!

Sorry to jump in.....yes you can buy Ranitidine but it will only be half the strength of what mumofk is using = 75mg.

They are sold under the brand name of Zantac, in 6's and 12's but you can buy a 6 pack from anywhere that sells such stuff. Sainsburys, asda, private chemists etc and they are quite cheap. They are sold under the drug name of Ranitidine the 75mg might suit you...if not...pop to your docs and get 150mg (I dont want to suggest you take 2 x 75mg...not my place to do so) x

kanga said it- though you might have to say you want it for husband/partner/whoever if you want to buy it over the counter as a pharmacist shouldn't sell it to us pg women. I had to talk my GP into prescribing it (as had it from hosp consultant first) and he was quite reluctant even knowing consultant had already given it me. Personally, I wouldn't have taken it without the consultants say so- and she gives it to her 'high risk' ladies, so I truly believe its safe, but of course we all have different 'other things' going on, that I wouldn't know if ranitidine affected. If you do get it from GP its free as well!
Hope you get some relief mrstresshead,
mumofk
