Hi all,

Thanks for all your concerns over DD - we finally seem to be coming to the end of whatever she's had. She's going to be 20months next week, so a very similar age to those of you who have/know LO's that have had something similar. Today she asked for 'more, more' after she'd eaten a bowl of cereal, which considering she hasn't eaten a decent meal in over a week, I was more than ready to give her and jump for joy!

Teary rant alert:
DH and I are REALLY REALLY struggling to come up with boys names that we both like. The extended family keep sticking their oar in which doesn't help at all, and I felt close to tears today about it all (stupid, I know - pesky hormones). We had so many girls names lined up and never considered that it could be a boy! Don't get me wrong, I'm happy to be having him, it's just that giving him a name we all like is proving very tricky. Names keep going on the list and then getting crossed off again.

I think my mistake is telling our family the couple of names that we've come up with so far. The parents are being very good and saying lots of positive things, but my sister looked at the names and said they were all 'stupid' or 'crap' and she 'hated them'. I know it's nothing to do with her, but it really knocked me for six as i never expected such a harsh reaction, and it's important to me that close family like the name as they are really involved with DD, so I guess they will be with DS. We let everyone know DD's name before she was born and everyone raved about how lovely it was (she's called Iona), and I assumed that we'd get the same reaction this time.

I think I've decided not to check out names with others anymore, although I would like to get all of your thoughts on the name Rowan. Like or dislike? My head is so fuzzy with lack of sleep and hundreds of names, that i'm not sure what I like or dislike anymore!

Teary rant over - sorry - thanks for being so supportive!

I like Rowan. It's very pleasant- (not meaning to sound condescending, if that does ), it actually is a nice, pleasing name, I hope you get me...? I know a boy whose name is spelled like that but pronounced Ro- wan, are you saying Row-wan?
We didn't tell anyone what we were going to call ds (Jaxon), we both loved it and would have hated anyone to even sway us, and we're glad we did that. We'll do the same this time. ALthough I'm tempted to ask for opinions on here but we're going a bit "different" again so almost scared what the reaction would be...

sweetbean · 28/01/2008 08:21

Hi Everyone

Blobsmummy

I really like the name Rowan !! and i feel v sorry for you that your family sound JUST like mine !!!!!!!!!! DH and i came up with a few names that we like for boys and they were totally shot down in flames, we are also having terrible trouble thinking of names (just in case LO turns out to be a boy)and it make me so cross when other people are rude about the names you have picked! My advise is Don'ttellthem Just find one that you and your DH like and stick with that. xxxx

Bramblina

OOOH go on tell us i love unusual names my daughter is called WILLOW her middle name is YOLANDA for this one we have chosen (subject to last minute changes) FREYA ROSE for a girl and ISSAC JAMES for a boy (not that unusual this time round !!!)xxxxx

IndigoBlue · 28/01/2008 09:08

Hi all

Blobsmummy - We are having the same problem with finding a boys name, dh keeps saying it'll come to us at some point but I'm not so sure, like you I seem to have hundreds of names spinning round my head and it's driving me a bit mad! Would really like to decide on one as I think it would help me bond with the baby, I've got over the shock that I'm having a boy but still a bit anxious about what it'll be like. I really like Rowan though, I might add it onto my list! Also we are not telling people the name in advance although I normally ask my sister what she thinks about possible ones as I know she won't say anything horrible!

Bramblina - go on, I'm intrigued now!

Newbishad - Welcome & congrats, sounds like you've had a hard journey getting your baby.

Podglet - That's certainly a good bump you've got there!

I went to see the midwife on fri for 25 week check but it was yet another one as the normal one was away again. She didn't do much, did listen to the baby's heartbeat but says I don't get measured til 28 weeks.

Did an hour or so of painting yesterday as want to get our living room done but it made me feel lightheaded and bit sick so now I'm worrying I shouldn't have done it, baby has been moving around as usual though.

hi all,

DS has an unusal first name (Ivan) - he is named after my wonderful late grandad which caused a bit of a stir - my aunt became quite nasty about it. My gran called him Fred for a bit til she got used to it then was really lovely and gave me lots of things of my grandads to pass onto DS when he is older. Our mistake wss not warning everybody before hand that that was the name we had chosen. With this lo we have her name sorted and are telling family but not friends, it't that unusual, Elizabeth (libby) Jeanette Sheila (my mum, DP's late mum and my late Gran) but we want family to know as my gran only died last year and we don't want the same probs as he had with DS.

With the names of your children, you don't have to please anybody else, you just have to please yourself, if you like it, you go for it now spill Bramblina, i'm v curious!

macaco · 28/01/2008 10:14

We found the same with boys name, had loads of girls names we liked but found it really hard to settle on a name for a boy. Also compounded by the fact that we want it to work in English and Spanish. I was really almost hoping for a girl as I couldn't think of any boys names I liked at all!

We now like Nicolás and AleJANdro (capitals for stress, pronounce j like an h) also perhaps Samuel, but I'm not nearly so keen on that.

We're not telling anyone except my mum as she is very tactful and will say what she thinks without being rude. She likes those names except Samuel, although as I say I'm turning away from it anyway. People say such awful things without thinking and I think it's nice for there to be a t least one surprise, they all know the sex, I think they can wait for the name.

Blobsmummy, god, how old is your sister? Is she very young? I can't believe she was so RUDE about your names! my advice would be to keep schtum from now on, once he's born they'll all get used to whatever name you choose.

IndigoBlue · 28/01/2008 10:19

On the subject of names, dd is Alice & I quite like Lewis but are they too similar sounding?

PinkGlitterFairy · 28/01/2008 12:27

Hi all.
I'm not very good at posting but have been trying to catch up now and then.
I love all the names flying about at the moment on here. They all seem so well thought out. I really like Rowan, Lewis & Issac James for boys. My only idea for a boys name is Rhys.Freya Rose, Ruby Lola & Evie Rose are all gorgeous. I'm considering Lily.

blobsmummy · 28/01/2008 12:35

Thank you! You've put my mind at ease.

Bramblina - yes, we'd pronounce it Row-wan.

Indigo - that's why I'd quite like to have a name sorted out now, cos i think it'd halp me bond with him - at the moment he's being referred to as 'boy'!

Sweetbean - Freya is lovely - that was on our girls list!

Mrsstresshead - we only ever paint, so wouldn't have a clue how to wallpaper - sorry!

macaco - my sister is only 3 years younger than me (I'm 28, she's 25), so old enough to have learnt some tact. I didn't expect that reaction from her at all, it was a bit out of character, which is why i was so surprised. She txt me this morning with her ideas of boys names, but she's on a different wavelength to me!

On a different note, someone I know has just given birth to triplets! 2 identical boys and a girl. The mum looks amazing - I looked much more haggard after giving birth to 1 than she does after 3! She's already below her pre-pregnancy size (and this is 10 days after the birth) . I can't believe it as she was absolutely huge - she managed to get to 34 weeks but was measuring 50 weeks!

OP posts:
JackBlackRoady · 28/01/2008 14:09

ooo, i love all those names, especially Rowan, it can also be a girls name - i taught a Rowan - i love it for either sex!
DH is naming this LO as I named DS. he likes Isla - but his brother said 'you can't name your daughter after Isla Fisher just because you had a crush on her' I love it though! Its the only name he's come up with so far!

chuffed, have you read that las sentence from blobsmummy?!!! eeek!!!

newbishad · 28/01/2008 16:28

Dear all,

I am delighted to be part of the May group as I thought I would bypass the whole Mum thing altogether. I consider myself very fortunate, despite heavy cold, insomnia and a whole host of other minor pregnancy complaints. I wouldn't change it for the world.
We had problems with names as well. I like the ones you've mentioned, Isla and Rowan. Our baby is keeping his / her identity hidden for the moment as I missed out on a 20 week scan having had one at 16 weeks. Freya is nice (I worked with someone called Freya a few years ago.) We have decided for the moment on Emily Mirium if it is a girl (Mirium is a Jewish name and our baby was conceived in IVF on the eve of the Jewish New Year). Aidan if it is a boy (no second Jewish name yet) but I like Irish names and this baby is half Irish.
Is anyone else's baby playing up like a footballer. I am 22 1/2 weeks and he / she is
really active particulalry at night!

PazzaPlusTwo · 28/01/2008 18:28

Hi

We've got 2 girls on the way ... we're looking for something a wee bit unusual, maybe a bit Spanish but that works in French, German and English too! Surname is Boettcher.

So far I like most:

  • Eva (classic, strong, goes well with surname ... but DH thinks it's not so good in German because it means 'Eve' like 'Adam & Eve' - I'm also not keen on that, but seems a shame, it's SUCH a great name)
  • Isabelle/Isabel
  • Anais (I love this it's French, pronounced A-na-is, but both people I've told so far have said it sounds a bit like an*s!!!?? Unfortunately one of those was DH )
  • Carmen - DH's idea, I like it too but I think it might be a bit prescriptive ... what if she's just NOT a flamenco-dancing vixen??! It doesn't sound like a name for a banker or politician - not that they have to, you know what I mean, I'd just like them to have the full range of options if the fancy takes them!)
  • Ines (hard to know how to pronounce)
  • Carla
  • Ingrid (DH thinks it's too German (he's the German one!!))
  • Jacqueline
... any other ideas??!
PazzaPlusTwo · 28/01/2008 18:37

Any May/June twins in London on the thread?

Am hoping to have a twin antenatal w/e class with Mars Lord but we need one more couple ... so if you hear of anyone who might be interested please point them in my direction!

W/e of April 19th - Muswell Hill (North London) - £180 per couple.

cheers

Pxxx

newbishad · 28/01/2008 18:38

Pazaplus2

I just read your message. I happen to know that the name Ingrid (the Ing part) is connected with the fertility God.
I know an Ingrid in England. It is a slightly uncommon name!

Pazzaplus2 - I like Eva and Isabel (spelt either way) best from your list. If people are unsure about Anais what about Anna or Ana?

We are not only keeping the name a surprise but also the sex as only people we've told in rl it's a boy is my mum & sister. Wanted to keep it a surprise as last time everyone knew which was fine, but some people such as dh's family haven't seemed as interested in this baby so I wanted to keep it as a bit of excitement for when he's born. So far we've managed not to let it slip!

JackBlackRoady · 29/01/2008 07:58

Pazza, I love Isabel, and Eva, and Anais! What about Ava? And Carina? I teach a half spanish girl called Carina and i love the name! And an old colleague of mine called her daughter Maelle (said May-elle, don't know how it was spelt) as she wanted a French/Italian/English name. I love talking baby names with you lot, you all have such lovely ideas!

Morning Ladies

Mrstresshead
I have booked my Scan its on the 8th March with will make me exsacly 29wks so hope fully a really good view chance of telling the flavour How many weeks will you be next week and can you please post yours on here so i can have a look! I'm still wondering weather to go for the photo option or the DVD option any idea what you think would be better??

I also think that Evie is lovely !!!

JackBlackRoady

I think that the name Isla is very pretty and it would be on my list of possibles but....... i always asociate names with people i know e.g i used to teach 2 boys called Connor and they where Naughty so could not now call my child Connor! and with Isla i used to go to school with a girl called isla we where really good friends for ages and then fell out (as you do when your 7) so couldn't call her Isla !

There are some lovely names going around on the thread at the moment and im so looking forward to when we all finally POP and we can have a lovely list of what we have all had and what we have called them

Mitchell81 · 29/01/2008 09:50

All the names mentioned are lovely names, I have loads of girls names I like, but boys names- I haven't a clue. Sweetbean: with DS I had a 4d scan and got both pictures and dvd and too be honest after boring the family with a 15 minute dvd haven't watched it since. But it is up to you, it is nice to have I suppose. Still deciding if I want a 4d scan this time.I had my 24 week scan yesterday and everything is still looking fine, will have scans every 4 weeks now. Only problem is consultant is very busy and had to wait 45 minutes before I was even seen.On a sad note, my friend just had her 20 week scan and they found afew problems, had an amnio the same day and then her baby died on the weekend. I feel so guilty for still being pregnant.(Not guilty but feel bad because I know I will be a constant reminded to her of what she lost). I can't imagnine how upset she must be.

macaco · 29/01/2008 10:01

Pazzaplustwo, if you like spanishy names what about Alicia, Elisa, Eloisa, Amaya, Aida, Sofia? Eva is very nice. we were thinking of all of the above as well as isabel before we found out he's a boy. My personal fave was sofia until princess letizia called the new princess that. Here they pronounce the E of Eva to rhyme with hay rather than in the UK as an eee sound.

sweetbean · 29/01/2008 11:59

Michell18
so glad everything is OK with you !! ans scans ever 4 weeks you lucky thing.
But VERY sorry to here about your friend i can even bare to think what she is going through did the baby die due to the amnio or the problems that they found on the Scan?? (sorry if you would rather not talk about it)

I just went to DD music class and was talking to one of the mums and she said that they told her on her 20 wk scan they where 90% sure she was having a girl and the baby was a BOY !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! this has really rattled me as i really did think that i was having a boy but being told on the scan that they thought she was a girl i have now got my self used to the idea ! How will i feel if they tell me on the 4d that she's a he !!!!!! has anyone else though how they would feel if they have a boy after being told it was a girl ??

blobsmummy · 29/01/2008 12:03

Mitchell - that's really awful news.

Had mw appointment today and she's happy with how things are going. 'Boy' actually slept during his heartbeat being listened to - the first time it's happened. It was quite nice to hear it straight away rather than the midwife chasing him all around my abdomen and covering me with half a ton of jelly!

OP posts:
blobsmummy · 29/01/2008 12:05

Sweetbean - in some ways I'd be quite relieved as at least we'd have a name and loads of clothes from last time! Though I've also got used to the idea of a boy so it'd be (another) shock....

OP posts:
Mitchell81 · 29/01/2008 12:27

I agree it would be a shock, but at least we had a girls name. But whatever will be will be, once they are here you can't swap them.
Can they be wrong in telling you its a boy? Or very unlikely?

Sweetbean: Not to sure how the baby died, don't want to ask- she will tell me when she is ready to talk about what happened. At the moment she is to upset.
