Chatname - gorbag sleeping gear is great! My DD (now 20 months) has always been a terrible wriggler so she was put in a grobag from the beginning and she's so settled in it. I never have to worry about her getting cold.

Also had a bit of a scare at the weekend as baby didn't move for a day, but he's now making up for it with vengeance, so everyone's breathing freely again (well, as much as you can do with a beach ball attatched to your front!)

I'm seeing the midwife every 3 weeks - and this is my second healthy pregnancy! Guess it just depends on where you live, but that's the norm around here - I certainly feel looked after!

Mummblesmummy - grrr at that girl . When I was at the shops on Saturday I was trying to pack the shopping bag (shop assistant did nothing to help me) whilst trying to get my purse out to pay and I accidentally dropped some change over the floor. There was a big queue behind me of people only holding a couple of items, and my change fell at their feet, but no-one even bothered to pick it up for me. It really annoyed me, as they could see i was struggling with the bag, I'm quite obviously pregnant and nobody moved an inch. Then, just as I was about to leave and gather up my change, a bloke picked it up and put it in his pocket . I'd normally have gone nuts and made a scene at that sort of arrogance, but TBH I was so surprised that I just couldn't think of anything to say and walked out the shop feeling really mad. I can't believe the shocking manners of those few people.

Fleurie76 - How weird is that?! Very funny! Can't wait to splurge in CK when I get past 30 weeks - a bit supersticious until then! Am so glad you made lots of NCT friends - i'm really looking forward to starting mine. Think I will give the Kingston Hospital classes a miss in that case as you are the second person to say that the classes weren't very useful.
Good luck with your pregnancy! x

Mum2Scrap · 04/02/2008 14:39

Jack Black Roady - thanks for adding me to the EDD list! x

bobsmum · 05/02/2008 12:12

Hi everyone

I'm slowly starting to sort out childcare for the birth. My family were being strangely unhelpful for no3 grandchild, but my severely disabled MIL has come to the rescue. Feel a bit guilty that she's had to step in to help.

I had a thread in the relationships section about my parent's holiday plans

Anyway - had m/w appt this morning - she said I have "bad veins"!! SO I'm bruised after a mammoth blood letting session.

30 week scan next week to check the placental site. HOping I'll get some good pix too, but still want to keep the flavour a surprise

That Ina May book that somebody on here recommended its fab - a bit hippy-ish in parts but overall really helpful.

Hope everyone's well

eira · 05/02/2008 19:08

Hello, could I join the club? I'm 36yo and 28 weeks today, my EDD is 2nd May and I'm expecting a girl . Everything has been very straight forward so far, touch wood, apart from not sleeping very well due to jumpy legs and a constantly full bladder. If everything continues normally I'm hoping to have a home birth.

podglet · 05/02/2008 19:38

Hi all!

Eira - You're my due date twin - I am also expecting a girl on 2nd May! Feel free to add yourself to the stats list...

Bobsmum - sorry you have had probs with childcare - not sure what I'm doing yet but we only have my mum and DP's sis near by and they both work full time so we might have a prob too. Just looked back and I haven't sent my congrats to you and DH for the new job - v sorry

Hope everyone else is ok, I too love Grobags as DS is a wriggler

KangaAndRoo · 05/02/2008 22:11

Welcome Eira!!!

I loved grobags as my dd was a wriggler but she did great when under a duvet....quite surprised really!!

yayyy im finally into double figure count down with 99 days to go lol !!!!

hope everyones well xx

Wolverina · 06/02/2008 03:39

Hi everyone

So many messages to keep up with! I need to start making notes so I can remember what I need to ask - my pg brain is losing all its power!

Bobsmum, is the book you mentioned Spiritual Midwifery or the other one (I think Ina May's Guide to Childbirth)? I'm quite interested in reading something by this lady but I only want to get one; ideally the less 'flowery', more practical one!

I'm another fan of Grobags - my son started using them at about 5 months and they changed our life! For the baby I've got a Grobag swaddling cloth. Never used one of these before but thought I'd give it a go for the first couple of months, then use sleeping bags after that.

I'm a bit worried as we have my mum coming to stay for 3 weeks when the baby is born, and tbh I find her really hard work (she is very critical but always dresses it up as jokes so you seem unreasonable if you get upset, plus she is quite lazy so not sure how much help she'll be). The thing is we need someone to help with DS and because we live so far away she had to come for a long stay.

I'd have preferred my mil to come really, as she is v helpful and easy going, but my mum would be devastated if I did that. I'm just a bit scared that what should be a happy relaxed time for me, DH and DS will be a traumatic "Never mention this again" thing, IYSWIM. (DH finds her hard work as well, and she is quite critical of him too.) Sorry, should probably have posted this in Relationships as it's turning into quite an essay!

Hope you're all well x

AussieSim · 06/02/2008 05:30

There is such a lot going on with this thread! Everyone seems to be ticking along nicely though - babywise, so that is the main thing.

I need to go for my diabetes screen test and I have to wait to check the position of the placenta and other than that I feel quite huge even though my baby is the regulation size - OB just says no resistance in my tummy with no. 3 (and at my age I guess).

Stressing out already about my in-laws coming to stay for 4weeks in about 5 weeks time when I will be 30weeks pregnant. I am worried they will expect me to run after them and entertain them and TBH I can't stay on my feet that long these days, my blood pressure is very low and I get a bit light headed and I get puffed just walking upstairs to the bedrooms . All of a sudden seems like a seriously stupid idea not to have cancelled the trip once I fell pregnant.

KacyB · 06/02/2008 09:56

Hi there!

I am new here - just registered yesterday!

I am due to give birth to my first baby on 30th May this year. I am SUPER excited!

I am hoping to meet some other new mums in my area (I live between Berkhamsted and Hemel Hempstead)

Kacy!

baiyu · 06/02/2008 10:04

Morning all,
I've not posted in a wee while as I've been treking back to Scotland from China. Good to be home but wasn't prepared for the cold as I've been living in the tropics.

I'm excited to start seeing an English speaking doctor, first appointment tomorrow. Though it'll be a pain as all my medical notes are in Chinese so back to square one with every single blood test etc. Still, at least this time I'll be sure what they're telling me! Going to an antenatal swim class tomorrow so will hopefully meet some other pregnant ladies in the area. I've barely been at my Mum's house in the past 10 years so I know no-one that still lives here. All quite lonely really.

Finding being away from DP absolutely hellish. he's a photographer and on a big trip in Vietnam so I've hardly been able to speak to him. Don't know how I'm going to cope not seeing him til just before this wee one is born. He can't come home til May and I'm pining!

mumblesmummy - I'm fuming at that girl! I had a five year old try to give me a 'high 5' when I was teaching in a kindergarten and he missed and punched me in the belly. That was only at about 8 weeks and I was so overly upset by it and that wasn't even on purpose! Poor you.

Quick question - is anyone else living in the North of Scotland? I live in the Highlands but as there's no big hospital nearby it'll probably be a 2 and a half hour trip to Inverness for the birth. Not keen on that but wondering if anyone else has any similar experience of Highland healthcare or Inverness hospital?

Right, essay over. Hope evryone is well and happy. have a great day!

blobsmummy · 06/02/2008 11:17

Welcome to the newbies!

Feeling knackered as I was woken up by 15 students (I live near a university) having a massive fight in the middle of the street at 3am, and then I couldn't get back to sleep after that. Police were called and it was all dealt with quickly. My road is a very normal, quiet residential street, so this sort of thing is very out of the ordinary - but not very appreciated when it happens !

Baiyu - really feel for you being away from your DP.

Aussie - how about pretending to faint shortly after they arrive - that should give them the message that you're not there to entertain them and they should be looking after you!

Looking forward to lunch time - I just can't stop eating at the mo!

OP posts:
JackBlackRoady · 06/02/2008 11:26

hello and welcome to Eira and KacyB!
I have added you both to the v. long stats list, and also I have added your DD Azaduhi and updated the age of your DS Podglet! baiyu - it sounds like you're worried, remember we are always here! bobsmum is in Scotland but I don't know about anyone else - sorry Good luck for your doctors appointment and I hope that you meet people - maybe you could join the NCT? xxx

Aussiesim - don't do too much, don't let them get you annoyed! 4 weeks is a really long time to have them, do you have a day booked off each week where you can get out with friends or on your own? I couldn't cope with my mum for more than a few days - Wolverina - my MIL is much more helpful than my mum too, so I know what you mean. Families, eh? They dress it up as 'helping' and 'being there for you' but really it is coming for a holiday!!!

Mum2Scrap - you are welcome

Grobags, eh? I will have to get one! They didn't exist when I had DS, 13 years ago!

LondonIrish - Teaching secondary science is pretty full-on if you are feeling light headed and dizzy. I am still sick, feeling sick, I get pounding headaches and my pulse races, I feel faint, and 3 times now I have passed out. My school did a risk assessment and said I couldn't teach - I had to speak to occupational health at the county council and have a meeting with our school nurse. I had to allow them to speak to my doctor too. And I know I am not so ill that I can't do anything, it is teaching I can't do - are you pushing them to re-do your risk assessment? I just thought I would mention it.

Have a good day everyone!

KacyB - have you tried looking for evening antenatal on the NCT websitehere?
JBR xxx

sweetbean · 06/02/2008 12:32

Hi all finally back on the net after stupid tiscali messed it all up !!!!!

Welcome to all newbies sorry for not mentioning you all by name but am in a mad rush as of to the midwife for 24 week check (yeah i know im not supposed to have one till 28 weeks but its to long IMO !!!!!)Hope your all doing well will catch up a bit better later on xxx

londonirish · 06/02/2008 17:22

JBR-Thanks for the advice-actually my school has not even mentioned a risk assessment (never mind re-doing one!)I really must say to the head or line manager. I think that they feel that I will just cope because I'm hard working..in fact I think I'm doing more now than ever in order to get all my exam classes sorted before the Easter holidays.
I'm trying to chill and slowly its beginning to happen
xx

podglet · 06/02/2008 20:15

Hi all,

JBR - you are fab, thank you for updating me
re the grobags, I get mine from Bump to 3, you get a 10% mumsnet discount too

Going through a teething stage with DS again, sore bottom, grumpy tearful baby etc, poor little boy, he's gone to bed smothered in Bepanthen to try and help the nappy rash and dosed with Calpol to help the pain

Hope everyone ok

JackBlackRoady · 06/02/2008 20:31

hello again, i really should be packing the last couple of boxes but DH and DS are at Scouts so I can do more slacking off on the net! My excuse is that we will probably be without the web in the new house for a while (eeekkk! how will i cope?) as of course AOL will not do as they have been informed!!!

Londonirish - you are welcome, you should push for them to do that risk assessment, bearing in mind you feel dizzy, at the very least they might realise you have taken on a lot and they need to cut this back! I know what you mean about exam classes, i am so relived my school have a teacher now employed to take my applied science classes.

podglet - you are also welcome! I am off to check out Bumo to 3 now...

See you all soon, hopefully, JBR x

sweetbean · 07/02/2008 08:36

Morning all hope every ones ok x

JBR hope the last bits of packing are going OK and that your not to stressed by it. xx

Londonirish
I had to ask my work to do a risk assessment when i was preg with DD and like you i hadn't had one before but its really worth getting one done. xx

Well had my check with the MW and all seems fine. I asked about the Anti D injection and apparently they don't do it in my area due to the cost !!!! so at least i know.

OH and also wanted to ask if anyone has heard the old wives tale that if your baby's heart rate is on the higher end of the spectrum then its more likely to be a girl and if its on the lower end then more like to be a boy ??
They told me about it with my DD and said that they though she was a girl and with this one as well they have said that its high .
I know that its a load of old tosh really but just wonder if anyone else has been told that ??

Well better get on and do something productive im really going to try and stop eating SO MUCH as im sure i will start piling on the pounds and can already feel that im getting to be a bit of a blotter !!!!!! but its just so hard when all i want to do is EAT

Oh and one last thing dose breastfeeding really help with weight lost or do you have to eat a lot to produce enough milk to breastfeed also can you have a few large G&T's whiles feeding or do you have to stay T total ?

Thanks everyone and sorry for the long post XXXXXX

Hi, so busy on here I can't keepup ( well, remember who said what) so welcome to all who are new, sympathies for stressful long family visits/offers of 'help', good luck with scans, midwife visits, etc. and hope all is ticking along nicely.
Sweetbean, I remember losing 10 kg in the week I gave birth- obviously including the birth, and DD weighed 8lb 4oz. Breastfeeding may have helped with weight loss to a point, but after a few weeks I figured out how to remember to eat- there never seemed time to do that unless someone prepared it all for me- DH leaving me a sandwich on a plate covered over- couldn't get a sandwich out of a bag!!! But I wouldn't think of it as the miracle escape to keep eating if that's something easy to indulge in!!!
Alcohol- I remember drinking a little when DD was tiny- my dilemma was WHEN would it get in my milk- should I be having my half a glass of wine immediately after feeding- or would my boobs be making alcoholic milk then- or immediately before/during a feed? Did read somewhere alcohol could affect let down, but TBH never had any problems, but then didn't ever drink much, as my half a glass of wine after not drinking for so long sent me very tiddly. When DD started having solids then I didn't feel the alcoholic milk was that big an issue- she could have EBM if I had a 'big night out' ( well, 2 drinks! But couldn't cope with the early morning wake up call anyway so someone else had to get up with her). Anyway, all that is my personal experience and I'm sure loads of people had the weight drop off them when bfeeding and different opinions on drinking!
Brain is absolutely fried- hope you're all not feeling quite as fuddled as me!
mumofk who's going to bed now :O

bobsmum · 07/02/2008 22:31

Sweetbean - what you eat and drink will really make little or no difference to the milk you make. The only thing that makes more milk is more breastfeeding.

You can drink while you're breastfeeding - it's a body fluid like blood, so yes there will be a teeny amount of alcohol measurable in your milk, but it reduces over time in the same way it does in the your blood. Obviously don't get p*ssed - you'll be looking after a baby, but a couple of drinks is fine. All your baby may notice is a slightly different taste.

I didn't lose weight while breastfeeding but that's because I ate all the wrong stuff and loads of it. I was so hungry and thirsty that I lived on biscuits and snickers

I'm hoping this time I'll be more disciplined (ha ha!).

Theoretically it should burn off about 500 calories a day.

Kellymom is the definititve resource for breastfeeding advice and is worth an evening or 2 spent browsing. Bookmark it too
