Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

My friend is buying a bugaboo for about a million pounds - she said her DH wouldn't 'let' her get a second hand one as presumably not good enough for their baby. I feel a bit poor. Does it matter if you have a second-hand buggy? I can't afford to spend hundreds of pounds on something I'm only going to use for one child.

sagitta · 23/10/2007 12:43

Good god, no! Get a cheap one then spend any extra money on something lovely for yourself/ LO. I had a (borrowed) sling until dd was five months, and then a cheap buggy. And it just made me feel smug when the bugaboos went past that I had saved so much money!

Lorayn · 23/10/2007 12:43

Crikey ellieg, no it doesnt matter, I am only buying a pram and cot for this one, dont need a car seat as I have DS's, he is nearly old enough for a booster and has a stage 0-1/2 seat.
My dc's never really liked their babychairs either so not going to bother this time. Maybe just get a highchair that can have different height settings from about 4 months but thats it.
What matter is your babies disposable nappies arent secondhand

Elfsmummy · 23/10/2007 12:44

My DD will be turning 2 when this one arrives. And I've been pondering the double buggy debate, but we've decided to use a combination of buggy board and slings (for the baby - not DD) depending upon what's appropriate and see how it goes.

She's quite a good walker already though and if we're out with another adult I do have a cheapo umbrella stroller that we use when flying in addition to my normal buggy.

Fingers crossed we'll be fine!!

Lorayn · 23/10/2007 12:45

As for buying a bugaboo, fair enough if you have money to waste on it, BUT I have never spent more than around £200 ona brand new buggy/car seat for either of mine.
Also going to have a sling, which I will probably get from ebay.

EllieG · 23/10/2007 12:49

Oh am glad about that. In my slightly hormonal state was making me feel sad that baby might be emotionally scarred by having DSD cot and second-hand buggy. I want to use a sling as much as possible anyway. It all gets a bit competative sometimes doesn't it? You lot seem really sensible, but people in RL sometimes seem to have lots of baby one-upmanship. And my mate is lucky as is her first (is mine but DSD lives with us) and they have room for a nursery (we don't) and loads of spare cash for posh baby things which I can't run to if I want to take time off with the baby after it's born. I've done my sums, and I would rather be able to take more time off with my LO than buy a bugaboo.

LOL lorayn - will try to remember that about the nappies

PeachyFleshCrawlingWithBugs · 23/10/2007 12:52

Second hand buggies are fine, first time round we had a bebe confort pram second hand and we've used the same cot with all of them that DH and his brother had! Just replaced the mattress. This time buggy is new but nothing posh- not many places to walk to from here without a car so folded size mroe important tbh.

'you won't be sleeping at all well at night, so you nap a lot. Also meet other pregnant women you've met through antenatal classes and moan about how your backs ache and feet are swollen'- no that's not trerm, that's NOW! had insomnia for weeks- nap at dinner time- and have backache 9from an old injury) and the start of SPD (had it with DS3 so know the bandage routine by heart).

HAve a feeling this baby will be early, I know scan says 31st but i've never had a scan get my dates right- baby usually a bit small for dates. Plus kicking was very early, and seem to be a few weeks ahead symptomatically! Hope not TOO early- damned Uni has scheduled our last presentation for when i am 38 weeks, and no I cant do it sitting down (wanna bet Mister? )

have had a letter summoning me to Ante natal to meet Obs grrrrr, fortunately cant go as its half term and you are only allowed one eprson in room with you. would haev to take all boys. Will write a letter to them explaining that I dont want their interference (nicely) and hope to not be rebooked!

smcg · 23/10/2007 12:53

Hey EllieG. Don?t mind your friend.

I went right off the bugaboos when I read how difficult they were to collapse. Can they really be worth all that money anyway?! I?ll be going back to Dublin a lot so I want something light. I think I?ll get a Maclaren or a Mamas and Papas pramette.

My contract finishes end of March so I suppose I?ll be stopping then. I am not going back to work for a year or two, might change my mind about this next year though!

PeachyFleshCrawlingWithBugs · 23/10/2007 12:53

Oh bugaboo's rubbish for epoepl with small ahnds like me- they actually hurt me to hold them!!

Lorayn · 23/10/2007 12:56

EllieG, I think some people place importance on the wrong things.
My exdp's db and sil, wonderful people had spent a fortune decorating their DD's nursery, they redecorated it around 6weeks after she was born as they had done it beige then decided it need to be pink, they spent hundreds on Mama & Papas prams, which they kept selling and buying new ones of, they had the same car seat as I have for ds (£35) but decided it wasnt safe enough and went and bought another one for £150, I could go on and on. This has carried on for the last two years and now.....their DD is a little brat partly through being so spoilt.
Also mum was distraught at having to go back to work when she was about 3months old, because they needed the money, maybe if they hadnt bought all that stuff??

demonaid · 23/10/2007 13:07

I'm not sleeping well now either, Peachy but I remember from last time that I thought I was suffering from pregnancy insomnia until the real deal hit in the third trimester and I really was hardly sleeping at all at night I'd drop off around 4am, normally, only to be woken at 6am by DH getting up for work. So I expect it to get worse this time too.

The chiropractor is keeping backache away so far -- I had some twinges set in a couple of weeks ago but I went for a tune-up and it all settled down. And my legs are really itching, but they aren't swollen yet.

DS hated his buggy so we only used it a few times (now, of course, he loves going in a buggy at MIL's because of the novelty value) -- will keep the old one for the new arrival although I'll probably go for slings again most of the time. A buggy board for DS may be a good plan, though (have been starting campaign to convince him that no, he isn't going to be carried just because he doesn't feel like walking, but it's going to be an ongoing discussion).

demonaid · 23/10/2007 13:09

I might buy a new carseat, though -- were suckered into a travel system one last time but it was a pain to put in or out of the car and DS would never sleep through the transition, and he hated the buggy so we never used it with the buggy. It also doesn't seem madly comfortable so I may just get a comfy one designed to be fitted in the car and left there, and maybe leave the old one at MIL's as a backup or something.

sagitta · 23/10/2007 13:12

I agree with Lorayn. Money is really not so important with a baby - they won't notice if clothes are new or old, whether buggy is second hand. All they will notice is you, and how happy and relaxed you are - which you won't be if you've spent too much on baby stuff that you won't need for long. Important thing is if buggy does what you want it to do - you'll be feeling much happier if you can fold it with one hand, or get it easily on to the bus.

...And in RL, I think that stuff all dies down - to be replaced with how bad the birth was, and how well your LO sleeps (which is far worse)

eva07 · 23/10/2007 13:15

hi everyone,
just need to get rid of something:
last week I had my 12 week scan and blood taken. after the scan I was told the risk for down syndrome was 1:700 (normal) and for edwards 1:4000 (normal).
yesterday morning they called and said that because of some hormone thing in my blood the risk for down raised to 1:66 - risk for edwards I didn't get as I was... well I couldn't think straight anymore.
after reading a lot of threads on mumsnet about down I declined this test where they put a needle through your belly and take a little bit of placenta. It wouldn't change my feelings towards my bean and I didn't want to risk an m/c.
sorry for the long post but feeling much better now

PeachyFleshCrawlingWithBugs · 23/10/2007 13:30

Hi eva

I don't know when you're moving near us, but I went through exactly the same (high risk results but refused firther tests) n my last preganancy- so if you want to chat do CAt me X. Also, if you do get worries at any time I know someone online (a MN user but easier to track down elsewhere) who talks to parents with new babies with DS, I know she'd reassure you as well if you need that.

Hugs XX

eva07 · 23/10/2007 13:30

maternity leave: wow, I didn't know I was that lucky.
in austria you have to stay off work by law 8 weeks before edd and 8 weeks after. and after these '8 weeks after birth' you are off work until the 2nd birthday of your DC. and on top of everything the company is not allowed to dismiss you from the day you get pregnant (even if you haven't told them yet) until 3 months after you get back to work (after your 2 years and 4 months absence).

and on top of everything, I will spend my 2,5 years in cardiff. I'm really looking forward

PeachyFleshCrawlingWithBugs · 23/10/2007 13:31

Apologies for typing btw- trying to print tickets for PTA, manage a very ill cat () and chat to Dh at the same time LOL...

paranoidmummy · 23/10/2007 13:33

My goodness you people sure can talk!I haven't had a chance to catch up properly but glad things seem all good with everyone.

I'm exactly the same Lorayn, I can feel LOADS and can determine baby's position at times! like feel its back poking out etc. I was concerned about how much i was feeling but my midwife said it is normal for subsequent pregs. also said if you are quite small this can make a diff as it isn't so muffled or something? so if you are a little person thaen maybe that's why?? god knows!! had a slight shock tho as I am just over 16 wks however my fundus height is 20 wks so she wants detailed measurements at my 20 wk scan in 4 wks. i could be slightly ahead as my dates are a bit off due to a mc just b4 i conceived but who knows???? i reckon i just needed a wee personally so my bladder was pushing it up.

In regards to buggies, we are poss looking at a bugaboo but only because my mum is buying the buggy as a gift...so cheeky of us i know

Lorayn · 23/10/2007 13:40

THANK GOODNESS paranoidmummy!!!!
I'm not particularly small, 5'8'' and a size 14/16 before pregnancy, so I doubt its that, however with my last pregnancy I was told baby was big and with the pregnancy before that, DD was 5lb 1.5 at 32 weeks, and DS was 8lb 7.5 at 38 weeks, so wouldnt say they were huge, but not on the small side, maybe thats partly to do with it.

Lorayn · 23/10/2007 13:42

Oh and my dates may be slightly off too, as I had only had one period since my LEEP, which wasnt a normal period, but they said my dates matched measurements at my 12 week scan.

paranoidmummy · 23/10/2007 13:42

oh my god, maybe we are heading for 10 pounders... arrrrrrrrghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. i'm crossing my legs!!!

Lorayn · 23/10/2007 13:43

Agh, hope not, not the best idea for VBACers!!

eva07 · 23/10/2007 13:45

hi peachy,
thanks for the offer. I definitely will take you up on it my next stay in cardiff will be 2 weeks over x-mas and new year. maybe, if you have time, I'd like to meet with you then but I will cat you a few weeks ahead.
regarding the MN user: do you mean tomcat? I guess she wouldn't mind me mention her here. it was for her posts I knew I would go through with whatever will happen.

PeachyFleshCrawlingWithBugs · 23/10/2007 13:47

Hmmm, me having a 11 pounder unlikely LOL- births weights at term 5lb5, 6lb11 and 7lb4! (actually alst baby term plus 7!)

PeachyFleshCrawlingWithBugs · 23/10/2007 13:48

there is Thomcat and she's fabulous, but also Eidsvold and Dingle are great to talk to (I ahev Sn kids so some of us talk a lot on an off site board as well, esp. eidsvold)
