Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

Firstly, it's likely your cats already know you're pregnant, they can smell things, I knew a dog that always jumped on sofa's and plonked down on me until I became pregnant and he started to tiptoe round me like a ballet dancer.

Secondly, IME, cats are protective more than anything, my cats have always gone extra on the hunting when I've been pregnant and mainly ignored the babies unless they cried, then sat and looked at them with a 'are you going to do something about that' look on their face.

As long as you don't leave your cats unattended with the baby it will be fine, cats have been known to try and look after babies, sleeping with them but smothering them instead.

Sheds75 · 18/10/2007 11:36

I deffinatly think they know, they are fussing around me even more than normal, and the little boy always has to sit next to me whereas before he wasn't bothered. am still worried about the smothering side of things

sagitta · 18/10/2007 11:41

V1KK1M - The GP told me that you can take codeine (if you can keep it down) when you're pregnant. When I had a migraine recently I found that paracetamol didn't even touch the sides. Hope you feel better soon.
Already planning a chip butty for tea...can someone talk about healthy food tomorrow, so I get an urge to eat broccolli instead?

scorpio1 · 18/10/2007 11:42

well, i shamelessly admit my Mcd's was lush although i am making up for it today

im at uni now, just printed out my assignment.

Vikki, i hope you get beeter try not to add stress to feeling crappy too, your baby will be fine.

oh yes, has anyone remembered the first ever poo baby does? eww you need a wallpaper scraper!

my mouth ulcer is going, thank god.

i am quite a headachey person, so i use a 4head stick, £5 from boots, safe in pg. you wipe it on your forehead, its great.

Hope you are all well?

I have my kitchen back at last!! we had a new one put in, they started 4 weeks ago and i just got it back yesterday!

Elfsmummy · 18/10/2007 11:42

smcg I had the amnio on a wednesday, had the rest of the weeek off and went back to work on the Monday. Probably didn't need to though, I was at a wedding and danced like a loon all day on the saturday so I can't have been too bad! I'd say that if your work isn't too physical you'll be fine. Honestly the process itself wasn't bad at all, less painfull than a blood test.

Don't worry about keeping nothing down V1kk1M the baby will take priority over your well being and naturally help itself - little parasites that they are!! Try some paracetamol and sip at anything that will stay down.

With regard to BF, I fed DD til she was 11 months (wanted 1 year but she self weaned!) I found it the most difficult and painful thing at first but recruited loads of help from LLL and a private lactation consultant. I loved it and can't wait until next time. I now do breast feeding support at a local group BUT I would be the first to say that it is a personal thing and I personally believe that its better for a baby to have a happy and relaxed parent than a mother who is struggling to feed because she feels she should. Does that make sence? Still jet lagged!

xx

scorpio1 · 18/10/2007 11:43

broccoli and cheese bake with spinach and pots do you? i had this the other day, was the best.

TheMaskedPoster · 18/10/2007 11:50

lol at the Broccolli eating - I know what you mean. The thing is I have even less urge to eat the stuff now than when I wasn't pregnant, so much easier to be fancying chips and bread!

We are having burgers for dinner too (prob due to all the talk on here as well), but the home-made variety - so I'll try and chuck in a bit more rocket or lettuce to make myself feel better.

on the subject of cats - when I was pregnant with dd my cat was always sitting on my lap and stayed quite close to me (even tried to get into my hospital bag!!) but once I bought dd home he just kind of looked on - usually from a distance.

Soph73 · 18/10/2007 11:55

Our cat completely ignored me once the bump got too big for her to sit on my lamp She never once tried to get into DS's cot (just used to give him a look that said "what the hell's that?!!") but I know you can buy nets to put over top of the cot so cats won't jump in because my Mum bought me one but never had to use it.

sagitta · 18/10/2007 11:55

scorpio1 - Thanks, that's done it. Sounds yummy, and on the weekend menu (after the chips, obviously...)

Soph73 · 18/10/2007 11:56

lap, not lamp Does anyone else think that pregnancy is making their brain turn to mush so that you can´t spell properly?

Soph73 · 18/10/2007 11:59

Will you please stop talking about MaccyD's DH is making curry on Saturday as we're staying with friends. Tomorrow we're having sausage, beans & mash - scrum and watching the rugby final ... heaven {{Soph tries not to dribble on keyboard}}

PeachyFleshCrawlingWithBugs · 18/10/2007 12:01

Ah cats

MN oldies will know my cat story but what the heck

When pg with ds1 we had a fairly new cat, rescued as ever, I had hyperemesis and was passing into a coma due to dehydration. I couldn't get downstaiors to the phone to call DH or anyone else. When Dh came home I had lost consciousness, Dh looked in and assumed I was asleep- fair enough. he went back down. cat followed him down, kept niting his ankles and running upstairs until Dh followed and found I couldn't be woken.

basically, cat saved the life of DS1 and I that day, i was rushed into hospital and revived on a drip.

We still have that glorious cat (the bastard who ahd him before us sealed him in a box and left him to die ) and I will never understand how anyone could have treated any animal that way, esp. one so lovely. Our other cat was badly ebateen at the age of 5 weeks and deemed virtually unsaveable- first cat i ever struggled to savve (and i've had around 30 I think in total- mainly farm cats I adopted when ill) and although shy and somewhat wobbly (3 legs) he's gorgeous too.

PeachyFleshCrawlingWithBugs · 18/10/2007 12:05

V1kk1

have a look at the blooming awful website for sickness tips- but Lorayn is absolutely right. Only concern yourself about drinks; they matter. even then, fluid can be found in ice, melon, lettuce etc- doesn't matter where as longa s you remian hydrated.

If you can't keep fluids down, see a GP as they may want to admit you for a drip or give you medication.

otherwise, just eat if you fancy something(doesn't matter what) and you'll be OK, do see your Gp though if it gets too much. haev had HG 4 times now (and people wonder why DH getting a vasectomy after this one....) and it can be extremly difficult to cope with.

PeachyFleshCrawlingWithBugs · 18/10/2007 12:07

And V1kk1 give me a CAT if you need support, used to work on support for blooming awfulas a volunteer)

X

TheMaskedPoster · 18/10/2007 12:08

Fab story Peachy! What a magnificent creature your cat is!!

Soph73 -yes the Rugby Final - ooo I can't wait (I do love the world cup ruggers)... we are going out for dinner first (dd is staying with Nan) after spending the afternoon at the babyshow at Earls court. YIPPEE!

lemonaid · 18/10/2007 12:14

Some of us are going out on Saturday... to a rugby stadium not entirely unconnected to Paris...

But we did buy tickets early at face value thinking it would be nice just to see a final, and firmly expecting it to be South Africa vs. New Zealand. Can't believe how much tickets are changing hands for at the moment.

Lorayn · 18/10/2007 12:15

Sausage and mash, how lush.

What agreat kitty peachy!
I hate any form of animal cruelty, most of ym cats have been rescued from somewhere. My most recent addition, I went to a friend shouse and she ahd this gorgeous kitten, but because it meowed she threw her remote control at it when I said how cute she was she told me to take her, so I did.
She tried telling me that the kitten was 6 months old, I was sure there was noway on earth she could be that old, took her to the vets and apparently she was no older than three months, had all her baby teeth etc, so the poor thing had been taken from its mum at aorund 3 weeks
Anyway, shes adorable now, yes, very vocal, but whats wrong with a cat that talks?

PeachyFleshCrawlingWithBugs · 18/10/2007 12:18

Oh our acts talk- one (the 3 legged one) seems to say hello and no in appropriate palces LOL! The toher knows how to sue the door knocker when he wants in.

Lemonaid0- am awiting for the call to tell me DS1's Rugby class (he does Sn tag rugby) on Saturday cancelled LOL.....

TheMaskedPoster · 18/10/2007 12:23

lemonaid!!!!!

I was hoping NZ were going to make the final - but am not too upset that England have ... somehow has made it all the more exciting

Sheds75 · 18/10/2007 12:51

thanks for the cat info, there are some fab cats out there it seems...... ooooh the rugby, so excited, may even treat myself to a 0% beer to cheer the lads on

Soph73 · 18/10/2007 13:02

lemonaid -
peachy - what a fab cat We inherited ours & the guy wasn´t very nice to her so she´s a ladies cat only. Only sits on DH's lap when I´m not there. Will try & put a piccie of her on my profile.
lorayn - they cost a fortune because they´re shipped over from England but definitely worth it

Piccalilli2 · 18/10/2007 13:05

Our much loved and pampered cat largely ignored dd from the start and now tolerates her although does tend to run away when she starts shouting 'hello Mr Pussy Cat!' at him. Our other cat died when I was 3 mths pregnant with dd, you can imagine the tears.

V1KK1M, I'm getting terrible headaches and had my first ever migraine a couple of weeks ago, so let us know if the doctor says anything useful. Hope you're feeling better soon, it's rotten being ill when you're pregnant.

V1KK1M · 18/10/2007 13:07

Hi, Thanks for your your words and advice. The GP has given me Stemetil tablets to try and stop the sickness and I have taken 2 paracetamols for the headache.

GP says that it is just morning sickness and that it is bad luck that I developed it at 16 weeks instead of getting it in the first 12.

I don't know much about cats but I have 2 British Bulldogs and foor the last 4 weeks my girl has turned into the pet from Hell. She seams to have forgotten what house training!! I think it is just a phase as she is going through as she get's told off for jumping on me.

I'm not concerned about how they would react with a baby, it is more when the child is walking round with food in thier hands and the dogs take it!

Soph73 · 18/10/2007 14:40

We stay with friends who have 3 dogs & when DS was younger one of them used to love following him around to see if she could nab the biscuit from his hand Now he just tells them to go away!
Try here to see if you can see our cat.

Soph73 · 18/10/2007 14:42

Nope, sorry it won´t do it Still can´t get photos to upload onto my profile even though I´ve shrunk them right down. Am going to give it one last try.
