Continuum toddlers are allowed to use sharp knives because they have watched parents doing it...

yes but they are supervised, i followed the cc method loosely and i know people who have followed it 'prperly' and they were more relaxed ie no stairgates etc, however their children were watched all the time etc, thats the thing, i wouldnt let my child use a knife on their own unsupervised but i do let my two year old help chop up the veg for dinner and fruit for a snack. he can use scissors etc too, its amzing how much they do learn just by watching but i am ALWAYS there, i wouldnt let him use them on is own and as such i have a stairgate to stop him going in the kitchen on his own, ie so i can go to the loo etc

bump is super wriggly and i feel like i am getting a bump, however at school today two people were amazed i was preg, let alone 21 wks ah well i am sure it will get bigger eventually

HolidaysQueen · 17/10/2007 11:24

hello all -

i'm just back from 6 days in southern Spain - weather was generally lovely and sunny so it's nice to have a sunny day in west London to ease me back into a British autumn gently...

I think I've caught up on the board although it took a long time! Hello to you all, and good news on scans so far, but special welcome to barrowclaire, and hugs to claphamlauren and merryhellyberry who sound like they have been having a rough time while I've been away.

My bump has really grown this past week - DH saw me yesterday morning after I'd got dressed and was like "oh my god, how did you get a bump all of a sudden without me noticing?"

I also think I'm starting to feel the baby move (I'm 17+2) - when I lie down I can feel lots of vibrations through my hands, and I have a lot more random discomfort etc. which I think may be the start of kicking etc.

Finally, I saw this article in the Guardian. I sometimes find Zoe Williams incredibly infuriating but thought this was a lovely article, as it is the first time anyone has described the first week post birth as not being hellish - particularly loved her last sentence.

another nod for Dec meet up- Thurs 6th is good for me too

imjin100 · 17/10/2007 13:13

welcome back HQ, glad you had fun.
CL and Preggersagain thanks for your ideas yesterday. The LO woke up again on the bus on the way for a swim this morning. It's been asleep since but good to know the 'man flu or small girl cold' has recovered and things back to normal!
just spoke to a friend of mine who has two children who said I should remember to enjoy these butterfly feelings as soon enough they will be thumps in the ribs and the idea of a butterfly or a tickle so enjoy it ladies!
have happy days all.

hellyberry · 17/10/2007 13:25

just back from scan, perfectly formed (long legged) baby boy tucked up in there. with his legs aiming directly at the ovarian cyst i've been carrying around, which was what must have popped on saturday morning and left me screaming and emergency admitted! it still hasn't completely resolved, so something to keep an eye in future.

am very very happy with all this news. perfect looking boy, good reason for recent traumatic events at w/e and no real likelihood of future problems. was great to hear uch in state of shock at whittington's failure to scan me over the w/e. it's not just me who was gobsmacked by the care. it was frightening. i mean, ok, conveyor belt care is put-up-able with, especially with 2nd etc PGs when you know what's happening. But only if the fricking conveyor belt works, which it clearly doesn't there

preggersagain · 17/10/2007 13:34

another boy !!! congrats- have we had anyone expecting a girl yet?

It's nice to have a reason behind the pain isn't it- horrible at the time but at least when you know what's caused it you almost feel better!

well i'm back on the road in MY car- they came and picked up that horrible bus thing and my car is shiny and sparkly sitting outside i'm off for a nice long drive this evening to charge the battery up fully and just enjoy my baby! (i know its incredibly sad to be so attatched to a car!)

lo's are squiggling and wriggling around- feels like a washing machine in my belly! My cats are really not impressed- they keep trampling and prodding my belly to make it comfy for themselves and all the babies do is boot them

papaya · 17/10/2007 13:36

wow congrats HB!!

imjin100 · 17/10/2007 13:43

congrats HB, fantastic news and glad the situation is resolving itself with the pain.
all these boys.

tori32 · 17/10/2007 14:06

CL have just caught up with the news and am so sorry to hear your having a rough time in all respects. I hope you come to a suitable conclusion for you one way or the other. Sending lots of hugs and choc cake x

welcome Barrowclaire to the looney asylum. Straight jackets are kept in the closet to your left and life belts under your seat!!

Congratulations HB on your baby boy!

Sorry, had to stop netting for a while as I was getting totally addicted!

tori32 · 17/10/2007 14:10

PS I forgot to say hello everyone else.

I think so long as children are well supervised while learning to use knives its ok. But I don't think its unique to the continuum method. Lots of mums and dads (including myself and DH) take the baby/ toddler into the kitchen to 'help' with preparing meals, dd sits on the work top and used to sit watching from her high chair to learn these skills. She now loves cooking and helps with all evening meals.

3madboys · 17/10/2007 14:11

yay thats three? boys i dont think anyone has been told they are having a girl yet?

its lovely to hear all this good news of scans etc.

((clapham)) xxx#

somehow now i know the sex of the baby its making it so much more real, that and the wrigglyness of him

timmyinatizzy · 17/10/2007 14:15

So is anyone going to have a girl?

ClaphamLauren hope things have gone better for you today.

We went to look at a house last night. Its a 3 bed town house and it was really nice. Dp is just working out finance and speaking to mortgage company to find out if we can borrow the extra money to put in an offer. The only downside is the 3rd bedroom is on the ground floor and is not quite big enough for the dsd'd to both have their cabin beds in them. Think it would end up being juniors room in the end. Not to sure about being 2 floors up from them at night when they did eventually have their own room. Has anyone else experienced this? Are we mad to even think about it, or will all those stairs keep me fit

turtle23 · 17/10/2007 14:23

just wanted to add that everybody includes their LO in food prep, just don't agree with the sharp knife bit. Let's drop it though, as it isn't worth the argument.

OP posts:
3madboys · 17/10/2007 14:31

thats ok turtle, not wanting a fight, just responding to your earlier comment parenting is a funny old world we all do things that are right for us, but not necessarily for others ifyswim? and thats the important thing, to do what you are happy with and what works for your family.

preggersagain · 17/10/2007 14:45

there's a due in June '08 thread now are we really old timers now? still feels to me like the beggining of my pregnancy

e14mum · 17/10/2007 14:52

lol preggers- we're pretty much halfway through!! I have 2 friends due in April and May, so feel a bit old-news already.

Hmm... does the spate of boys increase my odds of LO being female-flavoured? Looks like I'm going to have to wait until March to find out

ClaphamLauren · 17/10/2007 16:50

Wow - congratulations on the scans everyone! Very exciting. I hope it increases my odds of having a girlie!! I call it she all the time so going to be a real shock to the system if it's a boy.

Sat down with, I'll call him J as dp certainly doesn't apply, last night and we're going to try living together for November. He has told his new housemate that she can't move in and we'll take it from there. I can't see it working but I'm giving it one last chance, at least I can say I have tried my very best. I know I'm probably postponing the inevitable but it's quite handy for work as my back problems mean that commuting from my new home in Surrey is going to be a problem.

Saw a consultant today about back problems and the reason it's been so bad and not improving is because I have SPD too. Apparently it's quite common but I haven't read much about it yet. They also told me I need to choose between an elective C or trying for a vaginal birth, seems like such a massive decision!! LO was being very uncooperative today and was kicking the doctor and not letting hear her heartbeat, misbehaving already

Timmy - does sound like a bit of a challenging scenario with the stairs but if the house is perfect then it may be worth the sacrifice. The baby will be in with you for the first six months or so will it? All sounds very exciting though, good luck if you decide to go for it.

Thanks all for your kind words, certainly helped give me some clarity and stopped me completely freaking out. Jesus this is an essay, well done to anyone who has got this far...

MarchMum · 17/10/2007 16:53

My scan is in AM, wish me luck! Hope to carry on the boy trend....(I know...v.bad but v.honest! )

imjin100 · 17/10/2007 16:57

good luck march mum, can't believe all these scans....can you believe it - seems like just the other day we were all stressing about the 12 week ones and here we are with bumps and all. Big group back patting session to congratulate ourselves!

CL - you sound really sorted - most impressive and the key is to do what you think is right so glad to hear you feel you're taking control. Sure there are lots of people who know about spd...or try the pregnancy thread...just another trial to get through!

barrowclaire · 17/10/2007 17:06

wow wont we have to rename the group boys brigade or summat?
hope theres some pink flavours amongst us to balance it out (heres to hoping lol)
spent the afternoon in the baby room getting all soppy - not the best thing to do when you're in the house on your own lol (DH is away in London for work) daft i know, but still cant belive im finally preg

anyway keep smiling

timmyinatizzy · 17/10/2007 17:06

I'll echo what Imjin said. I'm sure I've read about plenty of people on here who have had spd and then had normal vaginal births. Its all to do with the position of giving birth. Not on your back, but leaning over the bed or a water birth even. Anyway check out some of threads.

barrowclaire · 17/10/2007 17:08

meant to say wtg CL, seems like youre getting your head round things, and good luck MM.

xxx

Prisci · 17/10/2007 17:23

Odd feeling, first sick day ever since the start of the pregnancy and for something silly. The doors around my office where all painted and thus I inhaled the fumes yesterday, which gave me headaches and was sick all night. I was also really worried about LO, but been surfing the internet and it seems that unless it is repeated exposure...it should be fine...I have slept now, so feeling better and feeling very naughty about being home .

Indeed it is hard to beleive that there is already a june thread. However, I don't know if anyone is in the same case, but I am only starting to feel 'properly' pregnant, yes there has been the itchy boobs, the numerous loo trip etc.... but now that a 'small' bump is starting to show and that I am in my 4th month, I am finally pregnant!

Congratulations indeed Helly Berry!!!
I am also getting my follow ups at the Whittington and like you, it really drives me crazy, between the poor scanning equipment, the fact you are made to feel like another number, lack of knowledge in some cases i.e. On my first visit with the MW, I asked for a toxoplasmosis test which I might be protected for or have, as it is dangerous for the baby. The MW told me, that indeed if you are eating lots of cheeses, you have a higher chance of getting it. This is completely incorrect, you get it mostly from eating raw/partially cooked meat/fish... Then, I took all the supplements, I am taking, and she did not even look into it... it is hard to beleive that this person is suppose to deliver my baby. Did you see a program about the hospital, I think it was on C4 a couple of months ago, it really made me worried. The only plus, I can see is that there is an A&E but then from your experience does not sound great either. Everytime, i get there I also can't help worrying about MRSA, since it is just not exactly pristine...enough ranting..at least they offer free down syndrome testing.

I am in for Thursday the 6th, I think it should not be too crowded with Xmas shoppers and the coffee shop is also so large that we would have plenty of space for us and our bumps , really looking forward to it.

CL, I hope things are better, I am only 10min away from Clapham, so don't hesitate.

HolidaysQueen · 17/10/2007 17:54

CL - my best friend has SPD in her first pregnancy. She had to wear a support for the last 4 months, and was fairly housebound at the end as it was too painful to walk far, but she had a natural birth with just 4 hours of labour! She said that it was brilliant to do that because she had felt so crap with the SPD, like she wasn't made for having babies, that having such a great labour helped to make up for it. So you can definitely have a successful natural birth if you want to try.

I had good news today - got home to find the results of my blood tests waiting and our baby is low risk for Downs and neural tube defects! DH was even more pleased than me and gave me a huge kiss as if I needed congratulating for having had something to do with it rather than it just being chance!
