@HugeAgeGap thanks for insight. That's reassuring, I now think I was panicking for nothing. My appointment was at 1pm and I had had breakfast at 10.30, and it's true that my breakfast was high in sugar (banana and breakfast cereal bar) and also last night I had honeycomb 🙈 at least this a wake up call to tell me to be more careful with what I eat.
With the home tests, do you always test with first morning urine?

Chanel05 · 06/07/2020 19:24

@Laura1348 my pain was behind my bellybutton. The pain was strong enough to stop me in my tracks so I couldn't move and each pain lasted a full minute before subsiding.

pangolin84 · 06/07/2020 19:41

I also had my 28 week appointment today. It felt weird seeing somebody in person - first time seeing my midwife since my booking appointment at 9 weeks. The next one at 31 weeks is going to be over the telephone again! All was good - my blood pressure was a bit low (90/60) but I guess that’s better than it being high...
@Lilice It’s standard practice for them to only do the OGTT if they see glucose in the urine on two separate occasions if you don’t have any other risk factors. My midwife gave me the container to pee in at the previous appointment so that I can collect the first morning urine on the day of the appointment. She said that was the best time to collect it.

Lilice · 06/07/2020 20:25

Thank you @pangolin84 it's good to know that's standard practice as I had no idea.

HugeAgeGap · 06/07/2020 20:28

@Lilice I think it's recommended to test with first morning urine. When I finally did that because the MW gave me a pot to use for the following appt at 28w I then got a clear result there! And it was clear every time I did at home ones with first morning.

I think try to do first morning urine, and then be as consistent as possible at the same time of day each time u check it with the home strips, that'll give u most accurate results.

Each time I got a glucose positive at the MW, it was after breakfast. One of those included marmalade on my toast, orange juice and Frosties cornflakes!! Then the next time I tried to be good and had toast with no marmalade, shreddies cereal and water but still got a positive on the glucose! I just think my body rubbish at getting rid of sugar in the mornings!!

I wouldn't worry to much about it, try the strips at home and take it from there xx

@roxy8203 @laura1348 yesss to the addictive nappies!
I'm going to hire a newborn kit from our local nappy library rather than buy newborn ones so trying to not buy loads so I can see the brands I like in newborn then buy them.
But I accidentally bought 5 baba and boo ones on offer and then the totsbots starter pack and then a bambino mio one which was on offer in sainsburys 😂 the patterns just suck you in!

Roxy8203 · 06/07/2020 20:54

@MooseWL I'm hiring a new born kit too, it's £8 a week which is a bargain. I'm hoping for after the first month or two he will be big enough to fit in my BtP on the smallest setting. I have just seen a newborn set of baba and boo for £64 which I'm very tempted by but holding off so far. I brought a mio kit which was really good value, 20 flats and 4 small and 4 large wraps for about £80.
The designs are all just so lush; I don't ever want to put clothes on him and cover them

ShiningStarz · 06/07/2020 21:25

@Lilice I just laughed out Loud and lliterally splattered spit everywhere!!!! Your midwife sounds a bit loopy!!!
The pain I cont think possibly could be indigestion!!! I'll be asking my midwife on wed so will let you know what she says!!
Gestational diabetes is very serious. I'v been carb counting now 10 days and it's fine. Can you see your growth chart in your folder?

ShiningStarz · 06/07/2020 21:26

@Lilice you could ring your local hospital diabetic unit and explain you'd like a meter. They give them out for free. It would be worth testing 1hr post breakfast, lunch and dinner just to see. X

ShiningStarz · 06/07/2020 21:32

Your glucose reading shouldn't be high after you eat as your body will produce enough insulin to break it down. If you have gestational diabetes then your body doesn't produce enough insulin to break down the glucose so your reading remains higher than normal and glucose gets passed to baby and this can cause issues. I'v to have growth scans now every 2 weeks. Youv no risk factors tho which is a positive, I had 2. I didn't have any glucose in any of my urine samples though and my gp blood test was normal.

Laura1348 · 06/07/2020 21:51

@Chanel05 mine don't last that long but if they do, thanks to you, I'll probably think more of it so thank you.

@Roxy8203 @MooseWL unfortunately I was too late to realise that hiring was an option- not that I think I can where I am.
I've got so many varieties and sizes it's unreal.
I used the mumsnet reviews to get started, now joined lots of FB groups where people are selling second hand, and also feeding my addiction with all their recommendations 🙈
I did the totsbots kit too- seemed a bargain with the offer code.
I'd also do the nappy guru questionnaire- they were really good with recommendations and advice.
I'm now banned until he is here and we start to see what works...😳😩

Lilice · 06/07/2020 21:58

Thank you @HugeAgeGap ill start with first morning urine and see how it goes.
@ShiningStarz I know, she did sound silly when she started saying the pain was heartburn/indigestion 😑 as if I wouldn't be able to tell the difference 🤣. Oh thanks for the tip about ringing my diabetic unit, ill definitely do that. She measured my bump today and it was on the 50th percentile. Is that what you call the growth chart? I'll definitely stop eating sugary stuff for now, but can't see myself stopping carbs yet. It's great you've got your GD under control 👌

ShiningStarz · 06/07/2020 22:03

@Lilice yep I can see an image of my growth chart and my measurements fall within the expected curve. If your bump measures big it may be a sigh of GD. Probably highly unlikely. The midwife will be keeping an eye on the growth of your bump 💜
Thankfully can still eat carbs just less!!

Roxy8203 · 06/07/2020 22:09

@Laura1348 I got the TotsBots newborn kits and got mum to do the same so got two lots of those.
I've done the nappy lady questionnaire and I only recently found the nappy guru so did theirs too. The Facebook pages definitely make it harder to not buy more. I've stared washing them to get the boosters absorbent while the weather is good

Laura1348 · 06/07/2020 22:26

@Roxy8203 that's great- they seem like good value!
Nappy lady was good but guru were really lovely with follow up questions and an order I made.
I asked on Facebook for places people use- I've got about 25websites now.
Out of interest how many times you washing? I was thinking 3 before he arrives - I started mine today too- bamboozles are still damp😩!
I have read that they take up to 10 to get to maximum so I am expecting leaks early in- and boys are heavy welters- lucky me! 😂👍

Roxy8203 · 06/07/2020 22:34

@Laura1348 I've washed them twice so far and will probably do them a couple more times before he arrives. won't be washing them 10 times, when he's little they get changed so much that they will be washed enough to build up the absorbency. I am a little worried about them drying over the winter so have ordered a dehumidifier to help when drying in the house. I'm guessing the kit won't need prep.

Yeah the guru was lovely, she emailed saying she was a little busy but would have the recommendations in a couple days and replied in a very friendly chatty way which was nice.

Laura1348 · 06/07/2020 22:39

@Roxy8203 yeah I'm the same 3-4 depending on weather. I've not thought that far ahead but I may follow your lead with a dehumidifier.
Yeah guru made me feel confident and comfortable- I hope you find them useful.
Cheers

NeuroMama · 07/07/2020 08:25

@laura1348 @roxy8203 what nappies have you gone for? I've been going to town picking up second hand from Facebook groups. In fact, it might be the only think we are actually prepared with 😂

NeuroMama · 07/07/2020 08:27

Oops didn't see there was a whole other page of messages where you answer just that question 😳

Roxy8203 · 07/07/2020 09:27

@NeuroMama could talk about nappies for ages 😂😂 I e got a variety and once he's here I'll see what works best and get a few more.

Laura1348 · 07/07/2020 09:35

@NeuroMama @Roxy8203
I've got loads. I used mumsnet reviews as starting point. The motherease are really hard to get hold of but I found some on twinkleontheweb.
I then did totsbots trial packs and watched FB groups to see what was popular. I don't think it helps that I want to use all in ones but pockets or two parts may be better.
I git some baba & boo and thirsties based on FB recommendations. It also depends on your budget.Nappy libraries help but I don't know if you have one near you or if it's open. Also contact your council as they may be running scheme/ have money off coupons to use. Mine doesn't but I think big cities may do.
I've stopped now and like @Roxy8203 I'm
Going to wait to see what works best.
Go to nappy guru and fill in questionnaire- they will help loads
Hope that helps.

Laura1348 · 07/07/2020 21:49

Would people put a waterproof cover on a cot mattress?
I've got the Chicco next to me magic bed and I don't think the mattress is waterproof🙈🙈 had it far too long now to take back.
I've been reading the lullaby trust information and key things for a mattress are firm, flat and waterproof.
Thanks
