Sparkly - Callum is going from strength to strength every day!!!

LizzieO · 02/10/2007 13:30

Hey

SGK - so pleased Callum is doing well

RGPargy - i'm constantly squashing LO, thing is with DS and all that i find myself having to bend down into akkward positions etc and then thinking shit shouldn't have done that poor LO, also although he is mainly very good DS has taken to trying to climb onto the baby....not good
I'm curious RG cos you haven't really mentioned it, but what was your labour with your DS like, and what pain relief did you have, was it just pethidine, did you find pain manageable

RGPargy · 02/10/2007 13:37

Hi Lizzie

As far as i can remember (DS is now 17!!) labour was very manageable. I had pethedine quite early on, practically when i first got to the hospital, but then when i went into the labour room, i just had gas and air. I was asked if i wanted an epidural but it was too late by then anyway as (iirc) DS was born about 30 mins later. Apparently us redheads feel more pain than those with darker hair (according to Brainiacs anyway!) so if I can do labour on gas and air, then anyone can.

RGPargy · 02/10/2007 13:38

Oh and i said a very not-so-polite "no" to the epidural too.

LizzieO · 02/10/2007 13:55

Hey RGPargy

its nice to hear positive birth stories as you hear so many of the 'no so positive stories' and i guess they are the ones that you remember

funny really, you look at everyone walking around and think, everyone who is here on this earth came from a woman somehow, my childbirth isn't going to be that unique really

sparklygothkat · 02/10/2007 13:58

I had Dd1 with just G&A, dd2 with Pethadine (not my choice, the MW wanted a quiet lunch and forced it on me) and G&A and Callum was just G&A. With Callum, I found the G&A just wasn't working when my contractions were very strong and I kept throwing the mouthpiece away and just breathed through it.

RGPargy · 02/10/2007 14:02

Exactly Lizzie. I feel very strongly about being as natural as possible for this LO. I have even ruled out the pethedine now!

Sparkly - As much as i used to love the Gas and Air when it was legal in raves () it can make you feel a bit sick (or maybe that's if you do it without any pain....?) which is what i'm worried about so i think i will also be trying to breathe through it as much as possible. The last thing i want is to meet my new baby feeling sick and green around the gills!

fiona76 · 02/10/2007 15:27

How do I find out about midwife lead units in my area I'm trying to search on the internet but can't find any info. Any ideas?

RGPargy · 02/10/2007 15:35

I think Loopy is the best person to ask!

choudru · 02/10/2007 17:15

FCH - I'm so jealous of your heirloom. I would love my DS or the LO to have something passed down from generation to generation.

You have given me an idea - I will go and ask my mum if there is anything I can put to one side for each of my kids. Something belonging to a grandad or grandmother.

RG - I'm always lying down as you describe. If LO kicks me, I move. If not, I stay there. They do like kicking you when they want more space - DS always used to kick when I rested my dinner plate on my bump!

I've been very tired again today. Couldn't drag myself out for toddler group again so feeling a bit guilty. Will take DS along to coffee morning tomorrow and then take him to toddler group on thursday to make up for it.

Have spent the day resting and sorting out clothes (mine and DHs). Now just waiting for DH to get home and later on I'm off to BF class.

Sparkly - am so pleased Callum is BFing well. My DS was able to suckle about 2 weeks after he was born (equivalent to 33 weeks) so they must learn the suckling thing earlier if they are prem and are encouraged. Sounds like the SCBU staff know their stuff!

OP posts:
littleoldme · 02/10/2007 19:04

Choudru - Ta- we are booked into NCT classes so it sounds like they cover BF as part of that. Our group is on the 3rd and 10th of Nov ( I'm not bue till 28th) but I've given them a kick anyway.

Fiona - re the whole car seat thing. I'm of the view that it's easy to find things to fret about, particularly in our delicate condition. As long as it meets all necessary saftety standards I really wouldn't worry.

Sparkly - Fantastic news that Callum is doing so well. It sounds like you are all being looked after well.

Rg- My Lo gives me a wallop if he feels squashed . I quite like the way he's already responding to stuff.

Four days to go at work . It's a real struggle at the mo. It's Ramadan so lots of the kids are tired, hungry and unfocused. My year 8s drove me to tears this afternoon. Kids can be sooo nasty - not the ones we are going to have obviously.

JARM · 02/10/2007 19:10

Hi all!

SGK - WOW WOW WOW - sounds like little Callum is a pure fighter! Keep up the fantastic work!

Not much to report here, other than feeling REALLY ill again. Not sure what is going on but feel fine one minute and then sick/headachey/oh so tired the next. Have been having afternoon naps every day for the last 2 weeks!

Had my 32week appointment today - and baby measuring as a 34 weeker - ARGHHHHHHH. Getting a little scared as have only ever been "under" measurements with the girls, never over! Head is right down, although not engaged, but doc was fairly forceful of the wriggling babies head in my pelvis that i sort of yelped out in pain and have been suffering all afternoon. Little one has hicups right now!

Hope you are all doing well xxx

RGPargy · 02/10/2007 19:25

Evening everyone

DP is working away for a couple of days in Cambridge atm so i'm all on my lonesome. We've hardly spent any time apart so it'll be weird not snuggling up to him in bed!

Choudru & LOM - Glad i'm not the only one who lays like that then. Phew, i feel less guilty now!

Choudru - dont feel guilty for being wiped out. I'm sure DS enjoyed spending extra time with mummy.

LOM - Ugh, soooo jealous of you and your 4 days left!! I have 11 working days left which isn't that long really, but when i'm sooooo tired, it feels like a year! sorry the kids got the better of you today. They can be little sh*ts at times cant they (except for ours of course ). Just hang in there - you'll be work free before you know it!

JARM - Sorry you're feeling under the weather. just try and rest as much as you can, is all i can advise really! Was your measurement a fundus measurement? I've heard they're not 100% reliable so try not to worry too much. My MW kept measuring me 2cms over my weeks too but the consultant measured me as being spot on, so it just goes to show!

I have a Britax car seat but I dont know which one as it came with my Ultra Travel System. It says it conforms to standard ECE R44/03. hope that's ok!

Hmmm mine goes up to 13kg too. I wonder if they use the same car seat in some of their travel systems?

Evening all. Hope evryones had a good day despite it being grey and dreary...

Just about to watch Brining Up Baby and waiting for MN to go crazy! Good to hear that the safest carseat comes with my travel sytem. I didn't know that there was such a difference in safety.

Not much going on in my neck of the woods, just waiting for my book on homebirth to arrive.

Less than 7 weeks till Dday!!!!

JARM · 02/10/2007 21:10

RGP - yep its the Fundal Height, just strange as it was MW who measured me as 1-2cm bigger at my last check, and then doctor today who measured me at 2cm bigger. Im not coping with the size of my bump at all the moment, im not used to a big sticky out belly - despite being my 3rd baby, the girls made me look fat rather than pregnant!

A friend commented last friday along the lines of "OMG you have a proper bump!"

Sickness is back tonight so heading off now before i throw up all over the laptop!

Pixiefish · 02/10/2007 21:24

I have pain in my bump- am assuming its the Braxton Hicks- it's like period pains- ew. About 4 weeks to go now- really wanna have this baby so I can get back to normal and do things like bend over without getting indegestion

nykate · 02/10/2007 21:34

SGK- SO pleased to hear how well Callum is doing. DD1 was born 6wks early and took 6 wks to latch on! Well done!

Just wanted to add a bit about epidurals as I have had one. Everyone's experience is different, but I feel that there is a tendency to focus on it as a negative thing (and a personal failure) and my experience was so positive. The area is numbed before it is inserted, so you dont feel anything more than a pinch- it's just a bit difficult to stay perfectly still. I felt MORE in control after I got it and was able to focus on the birth and enjoy. I still felt contractions, but they felt like pressure rather than pain, so I still knew when to push. No assistance needed for birth. DD2 emerged alert and immediately suckled at the breast. Most of my friends have had epidurals as well, and I don't think my experience is that unusual.

This time around I haven't decided for sure how I want things to go. I guess it's about time to figure that out ! I was already 8cm when I got to hospital with DD2, so I know I can certainly go without an epidural, but part of me thinks why be in pain if I don't need to be? Everyone's experience is different and not everything goes according to plan. Just wanted to let new mums know an epidural doesn't have to be the end of the world

AnnainNZ · 02/10/2007 22:01

Tonysmum - I was told my baby is more likely to be back-to-back as well, because the placenta is at the front and quite often the baby faces the placenta.

www.homebirth.org.uk/ofp.htm#practical is a good page about foetal positioning i.e. what you can do to try to get the baby into the best position. Mostly involves not reclining too much, sitting up straight, sitting on exercise ball, going on hands and knees etc. Apparently back-to-back babies often turn before or during labour anyway but it doesn't harm to do a few things to try to encourage them. I was going swimming too, breaststroke is meant to be great for gettig them to turn - not able to do this at mo, unfortunately.

Accordign to my last scan the baby is now facing sideways (in fact I know she is cos I can feel her completely over one side of the bump - the other side feels emptier - can feel her limbs and head on my right side) which isn't too bad a position.

NYKate - nice to hear a positive epidural story, I've told my dr I would like to leave my options open when it comes to pain relief - I would like to do it as naturally as poss but I don't want to rule anythi

AnnainNZ · 02/10/2007 22:03

Rule anything out! Message keeps posting before I've finished!

RG - they've only just made gas illegal in NZ (at raves etc). So I have had (ahem) a little experience of it

sparklygothkat · 02/10/2007 23:10

Callum had a 35 minute feed tonight, he then got very grumpy while doing his tubefeed so I had to put him back on the breast while the nurse did the tubefeed, which settled him and he went to sleep.
