Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
SallyInYorkshire · 23/09/2007 17:26

There is a really nasty cold going round (start of new school/ uni term I guess) and everyone in my office has had it except me... also dh has got it at present and is being MOST pathetic about it...

Never heard of pregnancy induced asthma but I have heard that your immune system is supposed to be a bit suppressed with pregnancy so that you don't reject the baby! (is this just an urban myth?) so coming down with a cold is a good sign in a way!!!

Have a virtual hug! - its bad enough being pg IMO let along pg AND coughing.

lljkk · 23/09/2007 19:01

Rapunzelle -- I'm dead curious. Why the elective CS this time? I looked up your old posts to see if you said somewhere else, but they say you had an 11 lber at home last time without problems.

Pregnancy induced asthma is a real possibility, you didn't just make it up -- google on it.

lljkk · 23/09/2007 19:04

It's not urban myth, pregnant women are more likely to get ill because our immune systems are suppressed. This is the only pregnancy I've had that didn't start with a many-weeks long bad cold, I suppose that's because it's been over summer so far, but here come the winter bugs so all may change.

rapunzelle · 23/09/2007 22:05

I really can't call it it elective. It's planned, but not my choice of birth at all.

Whilst my 11lb boy was born at home without obvious problems then or since, examinations and scans suggest internal damage and there is a small but very real chance of further damage being catastrophic. I know this is all very vague but this has all come to light v recently and is still a bit raw!

As I will have 3 children under 5 I cannot risk a long term medical condition that puts me in and out of hospital. There has been a lot of tears and soul searching, but we finally made the decision with the full support of our indepenent midwives who will attend the delivery with me and are still overseeing my ante/post natal care.

Happy to give more details off post if it helps.

Egg · 24/09/2007 09:43

Oh Rapunzelle I really feel for you. It must be galling to not be able to have the birth you really want, but to be honest I salute you for being sensible and taking the option that is safest for you and your family. At the end of the day as long as you and your baby are safe and well that's what counts. Is there any way they can assess the situation nearer the time and you may be able to get your homebirth again, or is it set in stone now?

Hope everyone else is well today. Beany and Merlypuss, congrats on your fab scans. Great that we are getting only good news now .

Merlypuss, we have a friend who is Sri Lankan and has a very long surname. He and his English wife have consciously chosen short one syllable "English" names for their boys as they feel a long first name and surname is too much. The boys do, however, have Sri Lankan middle names (only one each tho).

My dad had two middle names, and an unusual first name, so he insisted that my sister and I have no middle names at all as he found it a pain when he was younger. So we were the only children at school with no middle name. It didn't really bother us but I would like to have had one.

Sorry, long post . Getting all my chatting done now my MIL from hell has gone home.

saskia71 · 24/09/2007 10:14

Hi,

I've only found this site recently. I wonder if I could also join?

I am 21 weeks today and expecting my first baby on 7/2/08, live in Surrey but will have the baby at a London hospital. On Thursay (20/9), I had my 20 week scan and all was well.

Best wishes,

Saskia

Egg · 24/09/2007 10:29

Hi Saskia, welcome to the gang! We really are a huuuuuuuuuge group now, as someone else commented, we were all very busy in May / June!!! Congrats on your scan. Which London hospital will you give birth at? I had my DS at Chelsea and Westminster but have moved out of London now.

If you scroll down a bit you will find a list with all our names on, please feel free to copy and paste it and add yourself on.

I really have to get on and do stuff now. Only two hours til I pick DS up. Just ordered him a new bed, am very excited. It is a car. I think he will love it. Prob not sleep in it though .

lljkk · 24/09/2007 10:30

Welcome to the list, Saskia71, add your details to the long due-date list when you get a chance.

Healthy mother+baby outcome should be measured in many ways...I think the most valuable thing is that rapunzelle feels in control of her choices, under the reality of the circumstances. One of the worse outcomes is if a woman feels traumatised by a birth experience, which sadly sometimes happens -- very much less likely if she's felt that each step along the way she's made the informed choice about what to do. Rapunzelle, do you have a date in mind for the CS, already?

(Steps off what sounds like high horse, but it's something for the first-timers to keep in mind, that everything that happens in pregnancy/birth is your decision, "they" can't tell you what to do, only advise, you'll probably feel much happier if you feel in charge of what happens!)

I've done something to my knee and can barely bend it, hobbling around and can't ride my bike properly (boohoo). Just as well since it's raining and I hate cycling in the wet, but preschool is a mile walk away, sigh. Last week I jabbed my groin lightly and that has ached for days, too - I'm wondering if my ligaments have gone ultra-loose and unsupportive... anybody else prone to injury right now??

Egg · 24/09/2007 10:41

Definitely agree with you lljkk, sorry, did not mean to make it sound like medical people know best all the time etc, have seen too many threads on here to think that. I am planning to fight for a natural birth rather than c-section if poss, despite being told that the hospital is quite pro c-sections. I think if this was my first baby I would be much more likely to just do whatever they tell me. Obviously if there is any danger to the babies or they are in ridiculous positions then I will do whatever is best for them.

Sorry, very long paragraph!

lljkk, you are very brave still cycling. I was on my exercise bike last time right til the end, but would be too nervous on a real bike. I guess I am not a confident enough cyclist anyway. We are very lucky in that our new house is about 4 mins walk from DS's new nursery, but I did think this morning that I am not looking forward to getting two newborn babies, me and DS out of the door to get him there when it is cold and wet and icy in January...

beansprout · 24/09/2007 10:56

Wise post lljkk. I fear that I am too heading for a section as it keeps being suggested. Have already been told I will need to be monitored which is a bad start.
It's good to be able to talk to other moose about something I feel ambivalent about at best!

Egg · 24/09/2007 11:03

Saskia my friend had her DS at the Portland and is having her DD there in November. She was very happy there. I used to enjoy watching Portland Babies on Discovery Home and Health .

lljkk · 24/09/2007 11:13

Beansprout: moose??

It's funny if I get called wise -- I'm a basketcase most of the time, honest .

I love my bike, if I can't cycle for the next week or 2 I'm gonna be so grumpy... Now I have to walk to preschool which is going to cut my MN time short by 15 minutes, 'snot fair!

beansprout · 24/09/2007 11:13

I used to watch that too! And the various birth centre in Dorset type programmes too!!

Egg · 24/09/2007 11:31

Ah yes, that one was about Hythe birthing centre in the New Forest, can't remember what it was called though. I remember seeing one about a girl of 15 or so who was having a baby, and her 17 year old sis already had one baby and was also pregnant again. But they seemed like they coped SO well!!!!

I did wonder about the moose bit as well!?!? Thought it might be a term I was not familiar with so kept quiet!

beansprout · 24/09/2007 11:36

Sorry, a "moose" is a pregnant woman, as in "blimey, I'm the size of a flipping moose" (beansprout, July 2004).
This term has been used ever since in our house. The plural is "meece".

KikiH · 24/09/2007 11:36

Hi Saskia71, welcome to the list. I'm new here too.

DH and I are finding names quite tricky too - especially girls names (am convinced I am having a boy), we want one normal name and one slightly different name so the baby can choose when they grow up. I have 3 middle names so we are definately only having one middle name!!

beansprout · 24/09/2007 11:37

Ah yes, the Hythe Birthing Centre!! That's the one!! Watched it for hours and I still ended up being sliced open!!

Egg · 24/09/2007 11:55

Ah yes of course, didn't your name change briefly early on in this pregnancy to something like "fatoldmoose"!?!?!?!? Maybe not quite that bad but something similar.

What is the plural of moose anyway? Is it like sheep?

beansprout · 24/09/2007 12:14

Was indeed something of that elk (groan!)
Indeed, it is moose. I moose, you moose, they moose.

saskia71 · 24/09/2007 12:19

Hi,

KikiH - I see that you are in Surrey as well. Will you be having your baby at one of the Surrey hospitals?

Shopping for maternity clothes is an experience. I've bought from two websites so far, but the styles are so limited. At this rate I will spend the next few months wearing only black and purple viscose.

To add insult to injury I was in London the other day for a test, the lady sitting opposite me had the identical Isabella Oliver top to the one I was wearing (but different colour), we both didn't know where to look!

Lucyand2 · 24/09/2007 12:48

Thought I'd better update my details! Just been to playgroup for the first time and we found it slightly daunting! DD spent most of the time looking at the other mums!
Our favourite girl name so far is Isabel as I've liked it for ages and it goes with DD's name quite nicely!
Welcome to all the new people, the list is getting huge!

Yes, I'm planning on the Royal Surrey.

Had the same problem with maternity clothes, there isn't much choice and the jeans always fall down!!

beansprout · 24/09/2007 13:27

Last time I remember standing in Mothercare and just thinking "oh no, I'm pregnant but that doesn't mean I don't want decent clothes!"

I live in London and it was still difficult to find anything decent.

Egg · 24/09/2007 13:27

Hmm I have found loads of maternity clothes I like, although saying that have just bought a fair few summer things for our hols which I am really happy with, but no good for this English weather! I like Blooming Marvellous and JoJo Maman Bebe's stuff. Last time got lots of stuff from Next and TopShop Maternity but haven't looked there this time yet. Found lots of good work stuff last time from Next / TopShop and Isabella Oliver (I have four black dresses ). Also got good black trousers in TopShop last time which are good to look a bit smarter than jeans.
