Oh god maybe I just look hideous and don't realise . Arrrrghh. If all of you think the maternity clothes on offer are bad, that must say something!

beansprout · 24/09/2007 13:37

Not at all Egg!!
I think I just want to find my usual clothes but in a maternity version but there just is never going to be the same choice.

A friend of mine has let me have her Gap maternity jeans and they are still pretty grim!

Egg · 24/09/2007 13:42

It's funny I remember last time when I was pg with DS and working, one of the other girls commented saying "maternity wear is great now, because you are just wearing the same as usual but with extra space for the belly" or something, and I pretty much did I think. I tend to live in jeans and tops now I am a SAHM so it is quite easy, but did find quite a bit of workwear before. Saying that, I used to wear a lot of black dresses to work when not pg, so just wore maternity black dresses instead!

beansprout · 24/09/2007 13:45

I work 3 days a week and don't have to look too smart (we charity workers are a scruffy bunch) so I haven't had to shell out for a smart maternity wardrobe, which must cost a small fortune!!

lailasmum · 24/09/2007 13:58

HI all
I just had my second scan and found out that we are having a boy so I will have one of each flavour now. have updated my details.

on the maternity wear front, I have managed to get away will fairly little at the mo as some of my really low hipster jeans still fit but I have got two pairs of maternity carpenter jeans from fun mum that are really nice and comfy.

Gill79 · 24/09/2007 14:13

Topshop on Oxford St in London have got a maternity shop at the Regents St (?) entrance. There's quite a lot in there although I had to wait for my short person's trousers to be ordered! That's my only (so far) item of maternity clothing - and they're great - maybe the fabric's a bit cheap and nasty but they're really comfy and flattering too. Apart from that just relying on long tight jumpers and smock-type tops. Have never had any curves before so really enjoying showing off my bump/s and not going to rush to buy any thing big and flouncy.

BTW has anyone got the purple NHS book with the 70s/80s photos in it? it seems my mum's generation liked the tight and frilly around the neck with a floral tent below look WHY?????? Either that or dungarees - I get the feeling that it wasn't considered right to show your bump so it had to be disguised... we live in enlightened times.

violeta · 24/09/2007 14:14

I've been finding it really hard to find maternity clothes that are both cheap (not going to fork out lots of money for something I'm only going to wear till Feb) and are actually clothes I'll feel comfortable in. Beansprout: agree about Mothercare. Why do they think that all pregnant women want to wear nothing apart from black?! I went on a mission to Top Shop, and though the special treatment is great (space to sit down and a water cooler!), the dresses all seemed to be big everywhere, not just at the belly, that I looked as if I was wearing a tent! Also, all shops just seem to specialise in maternity trousers and jeans. This is just a personal gripe, but I've never liked wearing either and I don't want to start wearing them now. I'm just getting by at the moment in my normal dresses that are big enough not to be constricting (at the moment!) though I'm sure I'll be forced to splash out sooner or later. High Street though, it's just Top Shop and H and M, it seems. D Perkins is all horrible and Next is pricey. Maybe I'll have more luck when more of the autumn clothes come in.
Grrr!

(any thoughts on the coat dilemma incidentally, anyone?)

Congrats on successful scan lailasmum, by the way. I assume your little one is called Laila? I like the name and it's on my list but my boyfriend is not so keen!

Jo9977 · 24/09/2007 14:15

Hi!

Welcome saskia71 and KikiH

Thanks for the advice about standing your ground and making your own choices. So far I've found it really good as I thought I would be under loads of pressure to have tests done all over the place and wasn't. Want to make sure it stays that way!

Egg - am so jealous of your choices for names...would choose both myself but DH doesn't like them grrrr!

And loved the fairly surreal bit about the moose!

lailasmum · 24/09/2007 14:21

violeta- yep she is called laila, it suits her down the ground, but must admit I did have second thoughts before she was born but it just really suited her. Lilah is a rally nice alternative.

Gill79 · 24/09/2007 14:25

Coat hmmm have decided just to wear my fleece this winter. After all very soon I will be living in tracksuit bottoms and slippers might as well get used to dressing very very down. Seems a bit pointless to buy a coat for a few months. But then I am a bit of a scruff.

Egg · 24/09/2007 14:25

I have a lovely black dress from TopShop (admittedly two years ago) that is quite clingy, so fits nicely everywhere. Basically flattering the boobs and belly and even the bottom! I would never wear something clingy when not PG though, except tops, but not bottom half!

Lailasmum - congrats on your boy! It is such a relief getting the scan out of the way.

Gill, I also needed short person's trousers!

Jo, sorry DH does not agree on those lovely names! Thank god my DH does. We had more disagreement first time round, both of us had a name we were deadset on but the other disliked. Am really pleased with Benjamin though (the name AND the boy, of course). The other two are subject to change but are the frontrunners for now.

Is it wrong to drink a litre (yes, a litre, as in nearly TWO pints) of chocolate milk and then have lunch?

Egg · 24/09/2007 14:27

Oh coats... last time I had my work coat (longish black and fitted) that I just buttoned to above the bump and let it hang open, which I still have and is good for if and when I look a bit smarter, and also have a gilet thing that i bought in a medium (am normally small) last time, which I still managed to do up over the bump. However, not sure I will be able to once this bump really gets going. Do NOT want to have to buy a new coat though, so will see what happens. It might never get that cold . Maybe just wear a dressing gown into town????????

Gill79 · 24/09/2007 14:31

Is it wrong to drink a litre (yes, a litre, as in nearly TWO pints) of chocolate milk and then have lunch?

NO

on the assumption that it's also ok to eat ice cream every single day for 21 weeks.

Right, back to work.

Egg · 24/09/2007 14:33

LOL. I went through a lot of ice cream a few weeks back but it has calmed down a bit now. Did eat 100g of toblerone in 5 mins flat last night, and then felt to ill to eat anything "proper". My diet is terrible. Every day I tell myself that I will start eating healthily for the sake of Nemo and Dory, to keep them happy and healthy and inside for longer. Every day I fail...

violeta · 24/09/2007 14:36

Egg: Yes, the dressing gown sounds tempting! I've got a trenchcoat, so as I don't really want to buy another one just for these couple of months, I may have to resort to just doing up the buttons I can do and let the rest hang out! Maybe a long cardigan may do it as well - I've seen a few in the shops so may experiment once it gets freezing!

You've got a bit of a craving for chocolate milkshake then?! For me, it's been fizzy drinks. I normally can't stand the stuff either...

beansprout · 24/09/2007 14:38

My diet is worse this time too. It's not awful but is a long way from what it could be, and what with b/feeding ds, I really need all the nutrition I can get!!!

beansprout · 24/09/2007 14:39

I am a right one for fizzy drinks too!
Dh is away again tonight (labour conference) so I will be left, unaided, to eat convenient crap as I am too exhausted to cook proper food.

Not good.

Egg · 24/09/2007 14:44

Hmmm no, fizzy drinks don't do it for me. DH keeps trying to convince me to drink them while he has a beer as he thinks it is nicer for me than water, but i am not keen. The occasional full fat coke is lovely though. Chocolate milk, on the other hand (esp Yazoo), is marvellous! I used to drink a pint a day when pg with DS. Milk is good, at least, but not with all the sugar. My main problem is lack of vegetables. I normally eat an apple and a banana each day, but at least two or three days a week no vegetable passes my lips.

I imagine Beany, that you must need to eat quite a bit to keep up your energy with BFing DS as well as being 21 weeks pg. I used to eat like a horse when I was bf, all day and all night!

Egg · 24/09/2007 14:46

Talking of convenient crap, I do like the M&S nutritionally balanced meals that i can just shove in the microwave. They are essentially ready meals, but more "fresh" I think, and have to be better for me than chocolate or ice cream in the evening! At least they have some veg in them. I eat before DH gets home a lot of the time, hence my problem of eating bad stuff...

beansprout · 24/09/2007 14:54

I can't really justify too many extra calories on b/feeding grounds. I probably only need 200 or so extra a day. I'm just not eating enough of the good stuff, which is leaving me exhausted. I know I would have more energy if I had a better diet.
It's a bit of a vicious cycle!!

saskia71 · 24/09/2007 15:27

Hi Jo9977.

Ah the coat dilemma, it's last year's coat but without the belt for me.

A word of warning about chocolate and fizzy drinks. I asked my obstetrician about his views on caffeine, and he said that he would recommend having only one item a day. I.e either a cup of tea, or a small bar of chocolate or a can of fizzy drink. American websites treat caffeine in the same way as alcohol - a complete no go area.

I've hated giving up espressos and cappuccinos, I desperatly miss the smell of fresh coffee. It will probaby be my first drink after having the baby.

As for ice cream, it's no longer Ben & Jerry's, but the cheap stuff that has never been near an egg. My husband gets to eat all the scrumptious versions, while I look on.

Gill79 · 24/09/2007 15:44

have recently rediscovered sweet potato as quite an easy way to get some veg down. It's so nice you don't even need to cook a proper meal with it, just chuck some in the oven.....
Our bump has a very fat tummy and dp is convinced I am making it obese with ice cream! Dug out his baby pics and I think we can see where the fat tummy comes from!

I think my main sin is diet coke. Tried to give it up at first but it's been my life saver and couldn't survive without it, especially though the terrible months of ms. Don't drink tea or coffee so not too worried about the caffeine just all the awful chemicals... Oh well.

Amy78 · 24/09/2007 15:56

Hi,

I'm the same when it comes to eating - when DH is away offshore it's microwave meals and quick things - have lost my passion for cooking . My MIL and FIL are quite upset that they are no longer getting their Sunday lunch cooked for them now (FIL would have a fit if he knew bump had turned me veggie!!)

As for the clothes - complete nightmare. In Aberdeen we have the choice of Mothercare or Dorothy Perkins - very depressing especially when I need casual stuff for teaching but smart stuff for meetings. Anything else has to come from a catalogue and I can never seem to get anything to fit (see what happens when you're a short fatarse!!)

Got a lovely coat in M&S which will hopefully see me through the winter. It's one of these swing coats that seem to be in style at the moment. Only has a button up at the collar and the rest hangs loose.

Glad to hear all the good news about scans.

beansprout · 24/09/2007 16:08

Ah, cherry diet coke. Me too.

Most guidelines in this country state that you can drink a fair amount of caffeine. I went off it completely for the first 18 weeks or so but now have a diet coke and a coffee most mornings. Any more and I think it affects my sleep, so it's self-regulating!

Amy78 · 24/09/2007 16:14

I must admit I was quite keen on the cherry coke too but I think I drank so much initially that even the smell makes me what to throw up now!!

Has anyone else morning sickness come back with avengence? I had a bit of a reprieve between weeks 14 and 17 but now....ugh!

I'm craving granny Smith apples and tinned custard at the moment. And if anyone so much as waves anything with meat in front of me...the MS comes back. Really bizarre as I absolutely loathe apples and normally I'm a real carnivore. Oh well.
