Gill79 · 29/10/2007 14:16

Hi all

Have been absent for a while due to a really nasty cold-type virus which completely knocked me out. Never been stuck in bed due to a mere cold before....

Had a good laugh last night when dp got an unexpected mega-kick while we were watching TV. Think he has only really felt twitches before whereas this one was more like something out of Alien.... He gave a (manly shriek, leaped a few feet in the air and stood shaking in the corner of the room. PMSL. It took him a LONG time to get over the shock, as hours later he was still muttering.... never thought it would do something like that..... and think he is a bit scared of the bump now!

Not enjoying being back at work much especially as they're going to restrict web access as of this wednesday... so I may disappear. "Chat" is definitely not allowed although "heath" is - so should MN be banned I might be able to get it reinstated for the purposes of health and wellbeing... fingers crossed.

Egg · 29/10/2007 15:37

Restricted web access!!! You definitely need access to MN for your sanity and wellbeing. We will all sign a petition on your behalf if you like .

Sorry to hear you have had a nasty coldy fluey thing. I am dreading getting anything in the next few months. I have about 12 tangerines waiting to be eaten to provide me with extra vit c. They are situated right next to the quality street though, so not one has been eaten yet.

DH is also a bit wary of the kicks. He has felt three this time, and about 2 with DS last time. DS on the other hand is oblivious, he sits on my lap, with his back against my tummy, and Nemo and Dory kick him and he doesn't even notice. Such a shame as if he was older he might find it really exciting!

Got to go and wake him. He is waking too early in the morning so think 2.5 hours sleep at lunch max is enough.

miniandme · 29/10/2007 17:51

Had scan this morning and beans weigh 1lb 14 oz each !! This is great weights for their gestation, normally would be about 1lb 5oz at this stage so if they run out of room at least they have got a good head start

I had an emergency growth scan 12 days ago in syr hospital when we in with threatened preterm labour and they were this weight! I mentioned this in panic to the sonographer today and shse explained how the machines in differnt places would be calibrated differently, and that they all use different recording charts etc so not to panic and to go with the weights at our hospital form now on.Got consultant appointment tomorrow will be mentioning the SPD to them to see what they offer

morningglory · 29/10/2007 20:15

Congrats miniandme and the good scan, and sympathies on the SPD.

I, like Gill, have been quiet recently due to an awful cold given as a visiting present from my in-laws ('ta), and 2 weeks of half term.

I still haven't sorted out my abysmal care. DH has Oked going private again, but I called an OB at QC and was surprised that they would still charge me the full amount. I feel too guilty to shell out 10,00 pounds on a birth just because I'm whinging about not getting enough attention. Now that I know that this Dr has room in Feb, I think I'll wait until my 30 week appointment to make a decisioin.

My replacement parts for my Bugaboo came on Friday, and I took it out of retirement (the shed). I scrubbed the chassis with a toothbrush, washed all the fabrics, and replaced all the parts (wheels, matress, footmuff, raincover). Now the re-vamped pram is sitting in my reception room all ready for use, and this baby is truly feeling real...that and the striker-quality kicks he's giving me 3 times a night.

lljkk · 30/10/2007 09:48

Ooh, what's happened? Why so quiet? Are we too freaked out by the new MN formatting to post much this week, maybe? Or maybe no news is good news?!

I have gone into shopping and preparation mode, mostly on Ebay -- so much to do with Christmas coming, anyway. For Bubba/pregnancy so far I have bought: a Bravado nursing bra (so comfy!), a 0-3m snowsuit, a kiddy board for the current youngest, a baby bath seat that lots of MNers recommended (Tigex), a fleecy hat (impulse buy), some socks (should fit in about 18 months).

& been given: lots of prefold nappies, a Baby Bjorn sling, lots of promises about more clothes to come.

Still shopping for a birthing pool, browsing at 3-wheelers (don't really need one until next summer at earliest, mind!), and nursing tops never bothered be4, but some people say they're really handy. Still need at least one carseat probably go for the cheapest (yes, yes, bad mother alert). Probably get a milk pump...

saskia71 · 30/10/2007 12:13

Egg, I have my appointment with the nursery advisor in 2 weeks time. From previous experience (furnishing service), it should be time well spent. I have always found their advice to be impartial and they know their products. The Oxford St branch has beautiful baby clothing. I will probably get the nursery furniture elsewhere unless they are stocklists for Kidsmill. This Dutch company has stunning designs in solid & veneered white oak. Since I?ve ordered dark wood flooring for the nursery, white oak furniture would work well against this. The other good thing is that they assemble the pieces and take away the packaging as part of the delivery service (Kidsmill).
JL isn?t the complete answer to my pushchair dilemma. My current shortlist is Stokke, Emmaljunga and Bugaboo. As far as I know they are only stockists of Bugaboo, so I will have to travel to try out the other two. I hope that you have fun choosing your list this Saturday, (I will be looking at some Kidsmill).

Egg · 30/10/2007 12:35

I wont prob end up getting everything from JL, but it is handy as they have the Powertwin and Twin Two Jané pushchairs so I can check them out, then buy cheaper elsewhere. Want to get same cot as we already have, plus mattress, so will definitely get that at JL. I used to work about 2 mins walk from Oxford St JL, and spent many a lunchtime browsing the nursery dept!

We can't really decorate the nursery as such as we are only renting here, but will be adding various bits of clothing, another changing mat, bouncy chairs etc to our list. I am quite excited as am going without DS or DH, and just looking forward to some time out!

Slacker · 30/10/2007 12:54

Hey I had a really bad cold that laid me out for two days too, last week. It really sucked, my immune system must be way down. Felt really rough this morning going round IKEA too, had a little twinge of SPD (had it a few weeks ago but it went away) and felt really sick, which I haven't for weeks. It's not all fun, this pregnancy thing

Back to school yesterday after half term, to find that another mum who was due next week had her baby just at the beginning of half term - that's my plan for Feb half term so I hope it's not jinxed! Such a sweet baby, can't wait another 3 months for mine! Made me think that I should stop worrying about getting a pram or not though, the baby was so tiny that it seems ridiculous to think of putting something so little in a big bulky pram, so I will stick with my idea of just having a sling, and see how I feel when the baby's actually here.

LOL at nursery plans, have never had a nursery and in fact 4yo DD still doesn't have her own bedroom, so we are switching bedrooms around before Feb so that the baby is the only one still in with us! Definitely no room for baby furniture! Although if I did have a spacious airy nursery like in the catalogues, I'd get one of these

lljkk - I'm planning to get a cheap carseat too - the one that Kiddicare have for £20 looks way better than the one I used quite happily for DS1 13 years ago, and seems to meet all relevant safety standards - you'd get a hernia trying to lug about some of the ones I've seen in the shops too, they're so big and heavy. Not that I'm planning to carry baby round in a carseat much but YKWIM...

Nappies, I got some prefolds and wraps from Tommee Tippee's cheapo online sale, and am buying some Sandys and rainbow bamboozles too, that should keep us going for a while. And I have enough clothes off ebay, unless it's a particularly sicky baby in which case I'll buy some more clothes as needed....so basically I'm all prepared, now just have to wait....

Bessie123 · 30/10/2007 13:31

Slacker - I really want a moffii cradle, but I don't know if we can afford one.

Do you know anybody who has had one?

Egg · 30/10/2007 13:45

I will be using a sling AND a double buggy as I am pretty sure DS will not want to / be able to walk everywhere. Will get buggy board but am sure I will end up with one DT in sling, one DT in double buggy and DS in double buggy half the time.

Egg · 30/10/2007 13:48

Ah I love that Moffi cradle too. Would love to have a couple of those hanging from the ceiling instead of cots at first. We even have a proper heavy duty hook in the ceiling left from the last people here... but it is in the loft, which has no central heating despite it being nice and refurbished. Plus can't afford cradles AND cots .

morningglory · 30/10/2007 15:43

I'd never head of the moffi cradle before, but it looks reallly cozy....but how stable is it (I have an entremely energetic 4 year old)? I'm certain that DH would sensibly nix the idea of gatting a cradle.

Last time, I just used the bassinet of the Bugaboo for the first 2 months instead of a cradle/moses basket, and probably will do again this time.

I'm feeling kind of sorry of unborn DS2, he won't have many new things, and will be living/sleeping/eating from second hand things and DS1 had everything new. Somehow I think it just isn't very fair.

rozzyraspberry · 30/10/2007 16:15

I know what you mean morningglory - DS2 was born just under 2 years after DS1 and had second hand everything! He didn't mind though - in fact he still gets hand me downs although most of DS1's clothes are pretty trashed by the time he grows out of them now!! I find the hardest thing is at birthdays and christmas - it's hard to think of things to get DS2 as he has all his big brothers toys to play with!

I have gone through phases of having big clear outs since DS2 (especially when we moved house a couple of years ago) and didn't thing we'd have another so threw a lot of stuff out. So DS3 will have a few new things although we still have all the big things like the pram, car seat and cot. Also more clothes than I thought I'd kept.

A lot of you sound so organised! I don't have much to buy but the nursery is still full of junk and needing decorated. And I went to order the curtains I had my heart set on for the nursery out of next the other day only to find they'd sold out!! I was pretty gutted and hoping they get them in again!

saskia71 · 30/10/2007 17:00

All of you looking at cradles have you also seen this one

It's the Leander cradle. Happy hunting.

morningglory · 30/10/2007 18:51

Thanks saskia for the link. I did see this at a friend's place a couple of weeks ago, and forgot to ask the maker. My friend has the 2 stand and the cradle (one stand for upstairs and one for downstairs naps). It is really nifty looking, and fold up really nicely. Ooooh, I want!

KikiH · 30/10/2007 19:42

Saw the stokke cot the other day at cousins house and it is so so nice, really want one but I can't believe how much they cost. Although they do go from crib to bed which saves on separate costs for those.

Going to raid a friends attic this weekend as she has said we can take all her old stuff until her much younger sisters need it - can't wait. People are so kind when you are expecting!

bovrilsarnies · 30/10/2007 21:24

Hello ladies,
Have been away in Spain for the last week - had a wonderful time, weather was brill. I looked great in my bikini with a bump!

lots of exciting shopping talk going on!! I am V unprepaired and have nothing yet. But DP voluntered to start getting the spare room sorted weekend after next ready to convert into a nursery.

I'm not sure if anyone knows - but is there a guideline for driving long distances while pregnant? The only reason I ask is coz I was hoping that my boss would allow me to work more from home as I get bigger - but have received an email from him saying that allthough he will consider it at a later date it is by no means agreed. My current commute is a 140 mile round trip to our office. So the commute turns my 9am to 5.30pm working day into a 7.30am till 7pm one. Am knackered all the time already - hate to think what it will be like later on!!

Egg · 31/10/2007 08:52

I think you are recommended not to drive long distances when close to due date, but don't think sadly there is anything solid enough that can make your boss change his mind. He ought to be nice enough to let you anyway, the bugger. I would not want to be doing that drive even once a week, let alone every day. Can you speak to your HR dept instead of immediate boss? Also maybe speak to GP / midwife as if you can get in writing that it could be detrimental to you / your baby it could help. I am talking off the top of my head here, have NO IDEA what the "rules" are.

DS awake at 5:30 this morning. I have been awake since before 5. Was in a bad mood but have now just bought a brand new Jané Powertwin on ebay so am a bit happier. I had over £100 in paypal account still left from sale of old buggies, so don't feel I have spent too much .

gingermumi · 31/10/2007 11:10

Bovril thats crap, you have to do something to sort your hours, I'm knackered doing very little, you must be exhausted. Take care, you will get proper poorly if you try to do that for much longer.

widgetsmummy · 31/10/2007 12:03

Hey all. Speaking of buying things, we are thinking of making sure we've got the car seat fitted before going to see family at Christmas, just in case. Anyone else going away at Christmas/New Year? Think I might pack a little bag of baby clothes as well... just in case! Be prepared and all that!

milki · 31/10/2007 12:21

Hello all, just wanted to join in and say hi while I have 5 mins!

Also want to ask any mums with toddlers if they have any top tips, book suggestions etc for my 17 month old who is due to become a big sister in Feb? I've got a meeting with her nursery key worker later this week to talk about how we can help her cope with this life changing event and wondered if any mumsnetters had any handy hints as well.

Sorry this is going to have to be a brief post this time but I hope to get to know you all over the next few months!

Egg · 31/10/2007 12:48

Hello welcome Milki! No real recommendations on books I am afraid, we do have a couple on that theme, one called Our Baby (need to check author) and one by Lucy Cousins (of "Maisy" fame) called ZaZa's Baby Brother, DS does like to read them but he has nooooooooooooo idea how much they will relate to him! Also got the Dora DVD where Dora's mum has twins but DS has lost interest in Dora .

Widge, I just bought my pushchair online today (woohoooo), and went for the Powertwin, and am scouting around online for best deal on the car seats that form the travel system, and will get them in the next week or so. We are getting a new car before the babies arrive so want to take all the car seats along to test drives to see how they fit.

We have (perhaps foolishly ) invited my whole family to us for Christmas . We have never hosted Christmas before and usually take it in turns to go to either my parents or DH's parents (this year my parents' turn), but as it is only five or six weeks before I am due, and we would be at least 2 hours from my hospital if we went to them, we have decided to have them, plus my sister, BIL and three kids, to us... My sis and mum will help out with all the cooking and I just feel happier knowing we wont have to travel. However would definitely take car seats if we did, but I guess I am more likely to be early with twins.

Last time with DS, who was due 22 Feb, we stayed a few nights with DH's family at New Year, so were four hours from the chosen hospital, in the middle of nowhere (they live in quite a remote place in Devon), and I didn't worry about going into labour early then and didn't have the car seat with me. The only thing I did take was my hospital notes just in case!

miniandme · 31/10/2007 13:32

We're having our first family xmas with dp!! Were going to go out for dinner but have decided against it as i will be huge,in fact im already huge and wont really manage to eat much so would be a bit of a waste of money. So gonna stay home in our pj's instead,dp is going to cook a full xmas dinner while i get to lie on the sofa and the kids just chill with their new stuff. Then hopefully the babies will put in an appearance not long after !!

OP posts:
Egg · 31/10/2007 13:35

Mini I think I forgot to say congrats on your good scan on Monday. Was it lovely to see them again?

Would like a quiet Christmas like that, but also want to see my family.

I think my babies will be born on 10 Jan for some reason, either that or 17 Jan, no idea why I think those dates.

Gosh, that's only just over two months away .

excitedm2b · 31/10/2007 14:59

welcome to milki!
We are going to South Africa over Christmas and New Year. Will be great to have a relaxing holiday and get pampered by my MIL (who is SOOOO excited and doesn't get to see us that often obviously) but have to admit am beginning to think its quite foolish to be attempting a 12 hour flight at 34 weeks pregnant!! Not planning on taking any baby stuff (except my notes obviously) but given we have already had one baby shower from the MIL (was also there 2 weeks ago) I have no doubt that she will be prepared just in case. Unlike me however she will probably be praying baby puts in an early appearance whereas I will definitely be wanting to be back on home soil!!
Those of you looking at cradles, have you looked at the AMby Nature's Nest too? We are considering one of those but not sure. Any tips?
