widgetsmummy · 11/10/2007 16:15

anyone else suddenly feel huge? had so many comments today starting politely enough with when are you due? then you get that look (implying you're whale like considering the baby isn't due until Feb!!!)

my aim is to be bump proud regardless!

Gill79 · 11/10/2007 18:42

Widgetsmummy - got huge a while ago but it's not stopped! Have had lots and lots of comments that I am big for 5 months..... Oh well. Baby normalish size so hopefully it will just fill the space it's got and not take up too much more!!

MOVEMENTS I wanted to ask people about what the pattern of movements is like (specifically those who are due earlier in the month like me) There seem to be days when the baby is just going mad and days when I barely feel it (even after cold water and ice cream treatment) - and obviously I get worried in both cases thinking there must be something wrong!! On active days there are about 100 movements that I can feel and on some days maybe about 20-30. How does that compare to other people? Thanks

Bessie123 · 12/10/2007 10:27

Gill - I've been feeling about the same movement pattern as you.

Slacker · 12/10/2007 11:13

Baby movements are really variable at the moment, sometimes I feel a lot and sometimes not for hours. I always feel something during the course of the day though.

I haven't got my head in the sand about giving birth, but I am a little anxious that since I always have easy births maybe this will be my turn for a difficult one! Whoever said pregnant women were rational?!

gingermumi · 12/10/2007 16:05

Gill - have had similar concerns myself but am getting used to busy days/ quiet days. I did mention it to MW who said providing I get 10 movements in a day (and even on quiet days there are loads more than that!) then not to worry. Ha! Call herself a MW - that's what pregannat mums do! Worry for Europe! I could get a medal in it when I'm not pregnant let alone now. Read somewhere that if baby is facing your spine so that may have some bearing on it too.

gingermumi · 12/10/2007 16:07

What rubbish was that..... ? I meant 'pregnant' and that if baby is facing your spine then you feel less of the movements so depending on which way LO is facing that day day you might feel less than usual.

saskia71 · 12/10/2007 17:06

Hi All,
Was in London for my fetal wellbeing scan. Saw some new things this time, namely blood flow to the fetal brain and umbilical cord. It's amazing to see the flow as different colours (colour Doppler). All the various measurements were within range, so this was great. Saw the baby in 3 & 4 D and have a DVD of the whole scan. Can't wait to see the baby again at the next scan.

John Lewis was just down the street so I popped in to see the nursery dept. Oh my goodness, what delightful things to buy - I had no idea. They have a nursery advisory service so have booked an appt to get the ball rolling. From the flooring dept chose some rather nice solid walnut for the nursery. Hope to have the room painted and new flooring down before Xmas. All the other items can be delivered in Feb.

I'm seeing my obstetrician next week but I have not really thought about the birth - we can discuss it at a later date.
Anyone planning their nursery decor as well, isn't it exciting?

alkar · 12/10/2007 17:40

Gill I have been feeling the same movements as you too.

Saw my midwife today who said I was measuring large and I was more like 27 weeks than 23. At every apt, scan and midwife the baby seems to be large for my dates. The last scan he was 2 weeks bigger and now it looks like he's grown a lot more again. Checking again at my next midwfe apt in 5 weeks and if he's still big I have to go for another scan. Has this happened to anyone else? I am only 5'5 and size 10 and DH isn't much bigger!!

lailasmum · 12/10/2007 17:43

I am starting to feel awkward, my bump isn't huge and the baby is pretty small but just have that annoying feeling of always leaning over the top of something when I sit down so I can't get comfy.

morningglory · 12/10/2007 20:00

Hello all. Had my 2nd midwife appointment on Wednesday, and have been so upset, that I haven't been able to deal with it until today.

Scan was OK, not as thorough as the one I had with DS, which makes me want to book a private one. Little Baby seems to be doing well, and was sucking his thumb throughout the scan.

Once I saw the midwife (after a wait of 1 hour), brief chat, no measuring me, and when I explained my history (which I explained the first time), she said I would have to talk to a consultant. I proceeded to wait for another hour and half, only to be told that the consultant had left, and the only time I would be able to see him was 10 weeks from now.

If I didn't make that appointment, my next appointment that someone would see me would be at 34 weeks!!!!!!!!

I am getting sick of this, and think that I'll just cave in and go private.

Really upset, as I am getting stressed out at the thought that I'd give birth alone, at home, with no assistance available due to the probable quick nature of my next birth (too fast to even get a midwife to me for a home birth ). Who should I call to get this settled?

rozzyraspberry · 12/10/2007 20:21

Morninglory - I'm sorry you're upset - that's shocking treatment!! Would a visit to your gp help do you think - could they get you referred to a consultant sooner? Not sure who else you could call but it seems so unfair that you have to pay privately for care you should automatically get. Sorry I can't give any more advice but just wanted to reply to your post and say try to not worry about it too much - easy for me to say but I'm sure you know deep down that everything will work out ok in the end.

Slacker · 12/10/2007 20:51

Morningglory - that is really crap but sadly par for the course. In the past I've fought for the type of NHS care I wanted/needed; this time I just didn't want to have to fight, and am going private. Going by my last couple of births, my IM might not make it to me (she's 20+ minutes away), or at least won't be here for long, but I've decided it's worth it for the support ante- and postnatally, and just the relief of not having to argue with NHS midwives about bloody protocols.

If you had an IM that you trusted would you feel ok about giving birth at home? Or would you be more inclined to go and be induced early at a private hospital? Whichever way you go, at least it would be under your control and you wouldn't feel the anxiety of being reliant on uncaring 'one size fits all' maternity services.

BTW, I gave birth at home with just DH there and it was lovely and not panicky at all; midwife turned up a while later and it was overall a really good experience. Most quick births don't need assistance, by their very nature.

gingermumi · 12/10/2007 20:53

MG that is absolutely appauling and I would complain to anyone that will listen. There should be a director of midwifery at your hosp or health auth so try there first. The NHS don't like complaints - years ago I complained about the info i was given for a scan (nothing to do with pregnancy) and was telephoned the same day. Even if you cant get someone specific to pregnancy complaints your hosp must have a general section that deals with these things. I would also go back to GP and try that way too. Good luck!

On size - had a 20wk bump at 12 weeks. Despite continuing to look absolutely huge am told baby is about right for dates (depends on who i see - some have said a little large/long, but dh is 6'4''). My problem is the fibroid i'm carrying along for the ride - alkar could you be further on or is this just an eyewateringly large LO in there?

Have a good weekend evryone

3madboys · 12/10/2007 22:30

hello all, just popping in to let you know i had my 20wk scan today, all was fine, the baby was sucking HIS thumb yep its another boy, so i shall be 4madboys

i am so thrilled everything is ok and this is the first time we have found out the sex of the baby, its nice that we can choose a name, havent told any rl people yet, just internet friends, my parents dont want to know but i think dp will tell his family tomorrow

the baby was very cooperative at the scan and the hospital was really quiet so we got an extra long scan with some free pics, it was great to see things like the babies lips and nostrils etc, all the little details and he looked very cute. he is measuring big apprently, very long and a big tummy and head circumference, but i still have no bump and dont look pregnant, no doubt i will pop out in a few weeks time tho.

thanks to rozzy who popped over to the march thread to see how i was, i keep trying to post on both but dont get that much time on the pc, i am guessing this baby will turn up in march tho as the last three were late, but it might be fun if it turned up on its due date, feb 29th

hope you are all well xxxx

Amy78 · 13/10/2007 17:16

Hope everyone is enjoying their weekend - am revelling in the glory of the school October holidays (2 weeks off - Yippee!! ) Was back at the hospital yesterday for a further and scan and I'm happy to report that bump was far more co-operative and not somersaulting around the place like the previous week. Anyway, they managed to get clear views of the heart and mouth (was a bit worrying as cleft pallet problems run in my side of the family).

Anyway, bump has gone from being 2 and a half weeks bigger than expected to 4 in the space of a week - HELP and apparently has long legs (don't know where they've come from as neither me or DH are tall - I'm 5'2 and he's 5'7) Having said that there's obviously a throwback gene somewhere in the mix as my brother is 6'4 and neither of my parents are tall. Either that or the milkman was very tall.

Anyway, enough speculating about that

Enjoy your weekend.

leesmum · 13/10/2007 18:03

Hi everyone

well we arrived back from sunny spain yesterday morning and had a great time. It was nice to relax in the sun for a bit and let Dp parents look after ds for us!!

The downside was me having huge ankles all the time, it was horrible, and no matter how many times i managed to get my feet up it didnt go until i stepped off the plane back in rainy manchester. I also developed a really nasty rash on one side of my face that looks like severe acne i managed to get in doc's yesterday and she just said it was a reaction to something and gave me some hydrocortisone cream, but it looks dog awful

I have had a quick skim through posts and glad to hear everyone is reasonably well and especially pleased with everyones great scan results.

Well i'd better get back to my HUGE pile of washing and ironing. Dp has been out watching football and we are going to get ds to bed and watch the rugby with a curry and maybe a small wine

have a good weekend ladies x

Egg · 14/10/2007 09:05

Morning all. Just back from 2 weeks in Portugal. Was loooooooovely. Been trying to catch up on thread, poor DS has been watching tv for hours...

All well here I think, feeling a lot of big movement and can just lie back and watch my tummy jumping. They do keep me awake at night though. One is always more active than other (think boy is more active than girl). I thought i was huge now but having seen lots of other pregnant ladies in bikinis realise I am not that big after all.

Glad all good news with scans and no bad news while I was away. Better get DS some breakfast and then come back for a proper chat .

MERLYPUSS · 14/10/2007 09:34

Hi people. I am off to blitz Dad's garden (roped in BIL's, neices, nephews et c) and beat it into submission before the winter. Then Shepherds Pie for dindins. yesterday we had curry cooked for us at DH brother's place. Alas I have to cook tomorrow. Getting a bit used to not having to do anything.

loobyt · 14/10/2007 09:44

Hi, just wondering how everyone is sleeping. I'm finding staying awake past 9.30pm a struggle but then am wide awake for a couple of hours at around 2am ish. Was considering a bit of decorating at 3am this morning! Anyone else have this problem or even better a cure!

alkar · 14/10/2007 10:33

Loobyt I have exactly the same sleeping pattern, could really do with a lazy day but I have to go to work in an hour!

Egg · 14/10/2007 16:02

I have lots of sleeping probs now as well. Occasionally sleep well, but usually either can't get to sleep despite being knackered, or wake up to wee in night and then lie awake for hours. I always feel like I can't breathe properly, as though the babies are already taking up way too much space and my lungs are squashed, and this feeling gets worse the more I think about it... Gah.

To be honest though, as this is my only problem, I think I have it quite lucky!

Think I have decided on First Wheels City Twin as my buggy btw, after a lot of deliberation. Will go back and have another look at it next week and let DS have a ride in it to test it.

miniandme · 14/10/2007 20:57

Egg sleeping is a mamoth task at mines now a days have 2 pillows and a triangular pillow at the top end to have me pretty upright and at the bottom of the bed have the spare duvets under the mattress to lift my feet for swelling to drain
Poor hubby squeezes in there somewhere !!
Breathing is scary here too, when i cant get a breath i begin to panic making it even worse, hate to imagine what its gonna be like in 6 weeks time.Im in hospital tomorrow and tuesday morning to have steroid injections then have our 4d scan on thursday night for my birthday prezzie!! We haev one quiet and one really active baby too though ours are the other way round, with baby jack being so quiet and still i have to keep getting out the doppler to reasure myself, baby abby on the other hand has a party from morning to night and some !!!
I have put a new picture in my profile of my bump at 23 weeks- warning though its massive !!

OP posts:
Egg · 14/10/2007 21:04

Ooooh so exciting to see a pic of you! Must admit your bump is a little bigger than mine. I also posted a pic of me on my profile today, as well as some updated ones of DS. My pic is a bit dark though so you can't see the bump properly.

I have one pillow under my feet, and then my "Big V" pillow between my knees and kind of alongside me.

Which reminds me, someone asked where you could buy those pillows, I got mine at John Lewis for last pg but am sure they still sell them. They are a godsend!

No fat ankles yet...

miniandme · 14/10/2007 21:11

Your bump is so nice and cute lol!! As is your ds ,hes so sweet !!

OP posts:
Egg · 15/10/2007 07:51

Was lying in bed this morning thinking of you mini! Was remembering that I forgot to say how ADORABLE your little ones are! One is missing though, I think...

My DS can look very cute, he can sometimes behave cute too. He can also be a monster . He is off to nursery in an hour or so, and I am off to see midwife. Can't remember if I said but there was a bit too much sugar in my urine when I went to hospital 2.5 weeks ago, so it needs to be checked again today.

Hope everyone is well today . I slept WELL last night. DH did not, he was very mean and grumpy going to work this morning.
