widgetsmummy · 09/10/2007 10:31

Morning all! Back pain sounds good to me too!

Kicks are definatley underway although no real patterns to them.

Have found today that suddenly my boobs are spilling out of my top... not the best look at work yanking it up all the time! Why is it you never spot these things before you leave the house!??

Been feeling a bit scared lately about the whole birth thing, how I'll cope, what it is going to do to my body, and of course how much it will hurt. Got a bit weepy about that with DH. All he can say is that we'll be fine... bless him. It can't be easy for the men to watch us go through labour!

It is suddenly all so real!!!!

Bessie123 · 09/10/2007 11:07

Widgetsmummy, I have found the best way of dealing with that is to force yourself not to think about it. Avoidance is working for me so far. I think if I start worrying, I won't stop and I'll end up hysterical.

lljkk · 09/10/2007 11:14

JJ I think you should start another pregnancy thread specifically asking about exercise for preggos with SPD. A bit of exercise might make you feel stronger, and gaining too much weight is in nobody's interest. But whatever you do you'll need to modify the regime around your SPD you want to talk to other women who have had the problem. Good luck.

Count me as another one with head in sand about the whole childbirth thing. I know I can do it, but I really don't want to think about it!

widgetsmummy · 09/10/2007 12:07

Most of the fear comes from the unknown. Anyone know if we do NCT antenatal classes will we get to visit the hospital/maternity ward? If not, can we ask to go? Don't see mw until end of the month to ask.

lljkk · 09/10/2007 13:04

Eer, widget, I think my anxieties def come from fear of the known (!).
I know diddley about NCT classes, but hospital should run its own tour times.

excitedm2b · 09/10/2007 13:33

don't think you'll get tour of hospital with NCT as different people will prob be at different hospitals.
Your hospital should run tours though, and may do free antenatal classes too which will be more specific to what happens at your hospital. Ring your midwife/hospital and ask.
Also feeling very nervous suddenly about the whole actual giving birth thing. Not very good with pain and even worse with needles/ anything gory! Came to conclusion that I needed all the help I can get so have booked myself a doula, feel better already!

widgetsmummy · 09/10/2007 13:44

Our NHS classes are run in the daytime!!! so DH couldn't come as his work is really busy this time of year, thats why we've gone with NCT. I'll definatley have to ask mw about going... maybe I could joint the NHS class the day they will go...

violeta · 09/10/2007 14:29

Had my scheduled anomaly scan this morning (had extra one at 17 weeks cos of blood test results). Everything is absolutely fine - the baby is so much bigger now; it's amazing how much they grow around this time! Wonderful to see the little one again - she's still a girl (no contradictions thank goodness!) - and was somersaulting all over the place.

It's all becoming scaringly real for me as well. I've done more reading about birth now (being quite ignorant about the whole thing beforehand, such as about the pain relief offered etc) and am still not sure what I want or how high my pain threshold is going to be. I think I want to avoid having an epidural cos I really don't like the idea of being numb from the waist down and forced on my back, but who really knows? Not knowing what it really is going to be like scares me but is also a little like the 'ignorance is bliss' scenario at this stage! When are we expected to put together 'birth plans'? Anyone know?

Re tours, my hospital does tours every week - you ring and book beforehand to let them know you're coming. The info was on their website. Other hospitals probably have the same thing?

excitedm2b · 09/10/2007 15:09

great news re your scan Violeta. I've got mine on Friday, slighlty nervous but can't wait!

gingermumi · 09/10/2007 17:46

Congrats on scan violeta, good luck excitedm2b for friday.

Our local hospital (ST Richards, Chichester) does tours on a saturday - you need to book in advance. It also gives you two physio appointments at about 28 weeks, one is aimed at mum and the second at both parents and talks through birth, pain relief etc. With dd2 I'm sure I had about 4 weeks of classes but that was a long time ago! NCT classes ars supposed to be very good but obviously there is a charge and it seems to vary. You can also go to privately run classes, these are often at posh hotels and can be a weekend break type thing too - i read about this in a baby mag the other day. Sounds lovely but pricey. Will be going to NHS classes and tour of hosp. Can't do tour until DH more stable on his pins though.

Am part of head in sand brigade on birth - having done it twice i know what it's like and am trying not to think about it at all! There is so much else to cope with with out that as well! Have decided I want lots of pain relief though - have done the virtuous bit in the past and am too old and tired to struggle. It's such a personal thing and I know i will cope better having decided this in advance (mind you, dd2 was born quite quickly so i might not have that many options if this one is same - someone told me it's quicker with each pregnancy so my thoughts could be irrelevant - my plan is keeping me going for now though!).

KikiH · 09/10/2007 18:36

Yippee - baby is moving around like mad now, even DH can feel it. Was beginning to think something was wrong. Only 2 days to my scan - really can't wait.

Also starting to freak out about giving birth but figure that is is one/two days and there is nothing I can to do get out of it so may as well force myself to relax.

Am going to do NCT and NHS antenatal classes (might as well cover all the bases )

sarahmikeandharry · 09/10/2007 19:12

Hi everyone!

Have been lurking for a while but thought it was time to post on your huuge thread. Can't believe how many of you there are, and how many twins!

I'm due on 20th Feb with my first baby and very excited! Just had my anomaly scan today, and everything seems to be fine. Didn't find out the flavour though, as I'm hoping the surprise element might just help get me through labour. There weren't as many acrobatics this time as I remember from the last scan, but the kicks started again as soon as I left the room!

It's all starting to feel very real now suddenly, and I too am starting to freak out slightly at the actual giving birth part...

Hope all is well with you all and your bumps!

Chipmum

Thanks to one and all for comments. . . .miraculously I got my head aroung the whole inability to exercise and managing SPD thing over the weekend. I have to confess that it certainly helped to explore a variety of threads on this site but it would be nice to start feeling and seeing some reeeeeal movements. I c from the looks of it everyone has been getting on that wagon so I know it won't be long! I also trust we will all have many bundles of JOY between us in Feb 2008! Regards JJx

tyaca · 10/10/2007 07:44

excellent work bovril!

Jo9977 · 10/10/2007 10:03

Hear hear!

Welcome chipmum! And anyone I've missed!

Congrats on scans, kicks and getting head around stuff in general!

Very definitely like the idea of head in sand about labour...have come to the conclusion that it has to be gone through, the end result more than makes up for it and if it was that bad, why are so many of you doing it again???

gingermumi · 10/10/2007 10:51

Morning ladies.

Good luck with scan on friday Kiki and congrats on good news, sarahmikeandharry. Welcome chipmum and good one bovril! Makes it much easier to see now!

DD1 is popping back from uni today so i'd better hoover the living room - it's probably worse than her digs and she shares with 4 boys!

Have a good day y'all.

manamana · 10/10/2007 15:13

Hello all and a local wave to Gingermumi. Thinkig there's even more chance that we'll end up at St Richards at same time now that I'm having an elective. Maybe we should meet up for a coffee in Jan, or just rely on recognisisng each other by our nipple tassles!
Went to the physio yesterday to talk SPD. I am now encased in tubigrip while I wait for my proper support from Blooming Marvellous but feeling a bit more positive than I was at the weekend. She has given me some exercises to do - mostly pelvic floor stuff JJ, sounds like you've got much better level of fitness than me so your 'core' may be stronger than mine already. I've now got a big stability ball that ds thinks is brilliant and I'm determined to be as good as possible to avoid crutches etc towards the end. Going to try swimming at the weekend.
Good to catch up on all the news re scans etc. Take care all

CountTo10 · 10/10/2007 20:43

Hello, glad the scan results and movements are still coming in thick and fast!!

Sooo tired. Manic at work at the moment and was there till 10.30pm last night. So much on but I just keep thinking that I finish soon!!

As a bit of a symptom thing - is anyone experiencing swelling of the calves and knees? Last time I had it in my ankles but only in the last couple of mths. This time its not ankles just my calves. They swell up and the skin feels tight. I only get it when I've been at work all day and it's in the afternoon. I've upped my fluids, I take regular breaks and do ankle exercises but it still happens. Sigh, or maybe I'm just weird!!!

MERLYPUSS · 11/10/2007 11:26

I have fat feet BIG TIME! My calves also feel tight and when you press then they are like raw dough - leave a dent that takes a while to go. DH says I have pastry legs.
Doctor couldn't advise anything but another mum of triplets said to raise the foot end of the bed and wear support pop socks. Might give them a go.

tyaca · 11/10/2007 11:47

lol merly puss - i only really feel my pregnancy in my feet and calves. anything other than flip flops bring me out in a blind panic. my trusty old pair finally fell apart a fortnight ago, and had quite a hard time finding nice new pair in october!

i have resigned myself to support tights for the calves, better that than veins get much worse! sexy if def getting put on hold chez tyaca!

gingermumi · 11/10/2007 14:02

Hi manamana, sorry to hear about your SPD. Coffee probably better than nipple tassels in hindsight! (Though would probably brighten everyone's day!).

Have fat legs from mid calf down though it does go if i keep my feet up all day! Can't wear socks at all as swelling gets worse. Have invested in some 'mules' to replace flip-flops when it rains. As you say, not sexy but i guess the time for sexy has passed (for now!!).
